Scout Reports

Scout Report – John Brayford

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay moved to strengthen his defensive options last week with the acquisition of right-back John Brayford from Derby County. The 25-year-old arrives on a four-year contract for a reported fee of £1.3m and, along with Andreas Cornelius and Simon Moore, is one of three new arrivals to the Bluebirds so far this summer.

A long-term target of Mackay’s, Brayford spoke to the Cardiff official website upon completion of the move and admitted the opportunity of top-flight football was simply too good an opportunity to turn down:

“When I heard Cardiff were interested in signing me then I was obviously very interested, especially at the prospect of playing in the Premier League and testing myself at the highest level. Derby will always be a special Club to me, but this was an opportunity I couldn’t ignore.”

The History

The Stoke-born defender began his career at non-league Burton Albion back in 2006, scoring seven times in 77 appearances before making his way to Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2008. Brayford scored twice in 36 appearances in his first season and despite relegation to League Two, his displays earned him the Supporters Player of the Year award. With five assists to his name the following year, Brayford won the accolade once again and was also named in the PFA Football League Two Team of the Season, with his versatility seeing him fielded at right-back and centre-half over the campaign.

Brayford was then reunited with former Burton boss Nigel Clough in the summer of 2010 after Derby County shelled out for his services. His impact was immediate with his new club’s fans – a series of consistent displays at the back harvested a goal and three assists over 45 league matches and again earned the full-back a Supporters Player of the Year Award. Brayford managed just 23 games in 2011/12 due to a recurring thigh problem but returned last term to make 40 appearances, scoring once and also supplying an assist.

With just a year left on the 25-year-old’s contract, Clough was somewhat resigned to selling the right-back on this summer but summed up just what type of player Cardiff are picking up:

“Give him time to adapt and he’ll be fine at Premier League level. John bombs up and down the right-hand side as well as anybody and he will fill the criteria Malky is looking for. Malky loves defenders who are wholehearted and brave and John has got that. He is a very, very brave player and not frightened of anything.”

The Prospects

Despite the success of Matthew Connolly at right-back last term, Brayford looks set to make his way to the head of the queue for a first-team place in the season ahead. Connolly impressed from an attacking perspective and notched five goals in the Bluebirds’ Championship-winning campaign but the former QPR man is more of a centre-half than full-back, whereas the new boy seems tailor-made to take his place on the right of Cardiff’s back-four.

Certainly, Mackay was unsparing in his praise of his new signing, admitting he’s been after Brayford for some time:

“I am a long-time admirer of John’s and I’ve watched his career closely, he was the player of the year at Burton, Crewe and Derby. He has consistently been selected in teams of the year and, for me, he was the best right-back in Championship football last season. He is extremely attack-minded and very athletic. He is somebody who desperately wants to kick on and play at the highest level. His attitude is spot-on and will add to the squad.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of 4.5 looks likely in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), bearing in mind the player prices so far. This would put Brayford in the same bracket as the likes of Mark Hudson (four goals and three assists last term) and Andrew Taylor (five assists), while the similarly priced David Marshall should offer save points aplenty between the sticks. Fantasy managers on the lookout for a real cut-price route into Mackay’s backline are eyeing up Ben Turner at 4.0, though – he recovered from injury to make 31 appearances in 2012/13 and may prove a budget-friendly bench-warming fifth defender to be called on in emergencies only.

Having racked up 18 clean sheets last season (10 at home, eight on the road), Cardiff are by far the most resilient of this term’s promoted clubs, though the opening schedule has hardly smiled in Mackay’s favour. By Gameweek 13, the Bluebirds will have entertained five of the previous campaign’s top six at the Cardiff City Stadium, with City, Everton, Spurs, United and Arsenal all paying visit – a run of games that’s hardly conducive to defensive investment and one which perhaps will persuade Fantasy managers to distance themselves from Mackay’s backline regulars until the schedule takes a turn for the better.

Not about justifying though. Ronaldo was the best player in the world already and had scored 40 goals in a season. The fee has been worth it. Bale is not yet near the level he was then and is going for more. It's bonkers, considering if you double united's record transfer, it wouldn't come near to how much Bale would be going for.

With Lucas Piazon omitted from the Chelsea squad for the USA tour the announcement on who he is going out on loan to in the Premier League must be imminent.

Liverpool and Palace have been mentioned but considering the success of Romelu Lukaku's loan and Steve Clarke's links to Chelsea is West Brom beyond the realms of possibility?

Roll on the £4.5 bandwagon if he goes to a lower echelon or mid-table club and some real playing time all but guaranteed 🙂

I don't know much about Jedinak so can't comment there.
Shaw is someone I prefer to Clyne, but the difference is minuscule.

I actually like this team a lot. Maybe use the extra 3 million in getting toure/mert for amorebieta/clyne (not big fan of double saints defence) and reclaim it after the dgw by downgrading ivan?

        Cheers for the feedback.

Jedinak is a 4.5 bench mid, nailed on to start. Clyne over Shaw mainly because Clyne has virtually no competition for his slot - Shaw may be looking over his shoulder at Danny Fox. Really not sure about Aguero, paled in comparison to RVP last season and now won't necessarily be the main option with Negredo, Jovetic and Navas around, just think RVP is that dominant he is a must-have.

I reckon 8% of those are DGW players, 10-11% just view Benteke as one of the best Strikers in the League. His price is pretty nice and with RVP at 14, Suarez in Zombie lockup, the City headache of Tevez/Aguero/Dzeko of last year with no real path atm, then Chelsea uncertainty; it all adds up 🙂

Those last 2-3% or so must be Villa fans.

I think there are too many really possible scenarios where he would be owned only by the 3% villa fans. For example, he doesn't score in the DGW, negredo starts GW1 and scores... Pice drop happening.

Lambert scores a brace in gw1. Price drop happening

I think he's class but isn't better to get him when he's cheaper and with good fixtures ahead?

A number of people are considering him as an alternative to Walcott. He scored 10 of his 11 goals at the Emirates, and that was in just 11 starts! In 13 away starts he scored just 1 goal. If he (and Arsenal in general) can improve his performances away from home he could be a really great prospect.

    Kevin Nolan:
Pretty well known already but away form home he seems a bit lost. 8 of his 10 goals at home, 2 in 17 away from home.

    Gaston Ramirez:
4 goals and 2 oh his assists came in just 10 home starts. If he has an injury-free season he could be very worthy of a H/A rotation.

    David Silva:
All of his goals and 5/8 of his assists came at the Etihad. He needs City to improve their away performances to become a reliable 'big hitter' again.

    'Away Day Specialists':

    Robert Snodgrass:
2 goals 2 assists at home compared to 4 goals 4 assists away from home. He's definitely not a player to use in a H/A rotation. Patience is required.

    Gareth Bale:
13 out of his 21 goals away from home. This is part of what makes him such a good FPL option, he suits a counter-attacking style of playing away so he's not limited to just scoring at home.

    Juan Mata:
Half his assists and 9/12 of his goals cam away from home

    Jon Walters:
5/8 away from home, an unfashionable choice but he is still potentially OOP and on pens.

I'd argue you can use Snodgrass in a H/A rotation, you just have to play him away rather than home.

That's the annoying thing about Snodgrass. He's not exactly cheap and it's almost like you should never bench him because of that, and because of his involvement in games. But when the crap hits the fan, there are probably better players out there.

I would go for Snodgrass. If Carroll is injured Nolan loses so much of his threat, Paulinho could be playing deep.

Looks good but them most teams without Bale and RVP do. Obviously there's the rotation risk with Lukaku and JRod won't get as many points as Lambert. I'm also worried that Snodgrass won't do as well now Houghton looks to be moving to 2 up top rather than 1.

Hey, it's worth making the point that this 6 week total ignores the fact you will make transfers in the next 6 weeks, which will inevitably lead to an increase, maybe by as much as 4 points per week if your transfers are good. Btw, Ginkapo, I liked your discussion the other day about the accuracy of RMT, did you see my reply? You can find it if you click on my name.

Doesn't mean he won't be better this year. City have bought the likes of Navas who should help him immensely. He's a 7.5m starting striker for City, you can't overlook it because he didn't score when you had him last year, playing under a different manager.

Carrick is a 6.0 starting mid for United. You cant overlook him because he actually scored last year under a different manager.

What sort of a comment is that? The lack of any evidence of actual talent or fpl point scoring suggests you dont buy him, its the only thing we have to go on at the moment.

How is there no evidence just because you said so? Do you not remember the Spurs 5-1, when he got a consistent run of games?

            http://i.imgur.com/FmTeTIW.png

And comparing this to Carrick when the two are completely different doesn't strengthen your argument. And look at his record in Germany to see his talent, and all the points he won for City off the bench last season. To dismiss him because you experienced a lack of points when you owned him just seems odd. Dzeko needs width, which is why he sometimes struggles as City like to play through the middle. Navas will give him that, and in all likelihood help him be a better player for City.

Wasn't me who downvoted you btw.

Just seemed out of form, and it coincided with Tevez being back in the team. He still contributed by scoring goals late on and earning vital points, getting the tag super sub. He then said he wasn't a supersub and should be starting etc.

I'd think GW1 would be the perfect time to buy him because of the amazing fixtures, and the fact he's played all of pre season unlike the other city strikers, and also the fact Aguero's currently injured.

See I am tempted by Negredo personally as I feel like he will want to prove himself to keep Aguero out of the time. I still remember Aguero's arrival in the prem and feel like negredo's will be similiar.

'I think we have very good strikers with Dzeko as well. They can play together or we can play one of them with Jovetic or Aguero.

'We have four very good strikers and that’s what you need if you play in the Premier League and Champions League as a competitive team.'

I don't want to sound harsh but what do you bring to this site? I quick glance through your posting history shows you just ask for RMT's? You don't answer those who reply to you, don't give out advice and then you moan about the price of the membership and try and get in on the act as well.

    A) Kagawa and Mert
    B) Miralles ( or Dempsey) and Zabaletta ?

    Thanks!

      B. Breakout year for Miralles and Zabs over Mert because City clean sheets will trump a very slight edge for Mert in BPs over the season.

Do you guys expect Jenkinson to start for Arsenal at the beginning of the season, like he did last year? Could be extremely cheap Arsenal defender... if he starts.

Sagna was injured at the start of last season.

Which combination lads looks best primed for a higher haul?

    A) Mannone/Westwood, 4.0, Ramirez/Lallana, Van Wolfswinkel

    B) Davis (sub for Boruc), Collins, Snodgrass, Rodriguez

Can't make a choice. Absolutely 50-50 between both options at the moment.

    What do we reckon?

    Boruc Mannone

    Toure Coleman Collins/Clyne/Saylor

    Hazard Walcott Coutinho Mirallas Lennon

    Sturridge Lambert Lukaku

If Bale stays then I can swap Coutinho and Lennon for Bale and Thomas for the same price. Not sure whether I should downgrade the midfield/attack to improve the goalkeepers/defence. I just see Toure as a better option to Migs.

need to downgrade a midfielder else you'll lose a lot of points to the bench
