The Community Round Up

The Chelsea and Aston Villa double Gameweek 1 proved to be this week’s biggest news as the community was deafened with the sound of ripped-up draft teams. We take a look back at the subsequent discussions and the other hot topics to catch our eye in the past seven days, and keep up to date with the latest from the community leagues taking place this summer.

Hottest Topics

Chelsea looks to the main source of investment for community members during this early double Gameweek, with few keen on Aston Villa’s assets. Lateriser21 was on hand to come up with a solution for those looking to acquire a trio of Blues options, the game’s two most expensive players Gareth Bale and Robin Van Persie, and avoid an early wildcard. However, this task will become much easier should Bale’s rumoured move to Real Madrid become reality.

Among those urging caution before investing in Villa’s assets was Triggerlips. He warns that for every double Gameweek player we invest in, the likelihood of points hits grows as both Chelsea and Villa are set to miss Gameweek 3.

Thinking of picking up a West Brom player? Maybe you will reconsider after reading Dino’s critical assessment of their chances. It proves grim reading for Baggies fans and those considering Nicolas Anelka as a cut-price striker option.

Second season syndrome was the inspiration behind this detailed post from Demi, who has analysed those players who may be primed for a far better second season in the Premier League. A certain Aston Villa striker is amongst those he suggests could have an impressive 2013/14 – perhaps investment in the midlanders’ attacking assets for the double Gameweek may not be a bad idea after all.

Meanwhile, Gimli Son of Gloin has taken an epic trek through the main captaincy options to help those looking at heavy hitters over the first few weeks. SW6’s Home and Away analysis was another post to catch our eye, especially his look at West Ham’s shockingly poor away form.

Finally, Camzy was on hand to wrap up some other key decisions that have been vexing the community over the last week, such as Anelka versus Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez as a cheap striker option. Whether to invest in Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet and a non-playing goalkeeper, as opposed to picking up two rotating keepers, was another key question analysed in this post.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for midfielders over the week. Man City, owned by Messimerized, went on quite a shopping as they acquired the duo of David Silva and Javier Martinez. Meanwhile Fulham, under PeppieandFelix, still lead the game, with Norwich, led by The Shadow, and 4vets’ Liverpool inching closer to the lead. The deadline for submission of bids on strikers is Saturday 23.59 hrs BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

Meanwhile, FFS UEFA’s leagues returns for another instalment this coming season. Click here to sign up.

Honestly, I really don't get the Boruc/Davis love.
At least get a cheap rotating pair.

Apart from that I can't really fault it. Strike force could be great or return 6 points between them...

A plug for my drafted league, if I may...

I am pleased to announce that Fantrax.com offers an avenue to play our favorite game in a more competitive fashion. You and your opponents will be required to draft a squad of 11 EPL players, and every week you will select a 7-a-side squad to compete. This squad can be in a 3-2-1, 2-2-2, or 2-3-1 formation. In this way, you will all have unique squads throughout the season, and you'll have a more strategic and engaging fantasy league as a result.

Shoot me an email (conradburry@gmail.com) if you're interested in joining the league!

With Turner and Bassong likely to miss the start of the season Ryan Bennett could be an option. Featured in all 4 pre season games so far (completed 90 mins in 3 including the last 2). England U21 and apparently cost them just over 3m. Only 4m in fpl.

Dzeko: over-hyped press story about 'main striker' - he'll struggle for game time, IMO

Watch Colback. PdC pushing him to sign new deal but no dice so far, into last 12 mths. Will he get played if he doesn't sign?

He was awful when I watched him in person, he was getting booed and slagged off by the City fans. He was very lethargic and kept messing up. But he seems to have stepped up his game, and he slots right into Pele's new system nicely. I think he'll be a bargain this year.

cheap enough to take the risk on gw1, if fails than could create a problem for gw 3 though. But I want a City striker that is for sure and with that info he looks like the guy to own especially if Aguero is out as Jovetic is probably not prefferred to be furthest up front

Yeah, thats the risk with chasing the points from the double, Im happy to punt Dzeko with his fixtures until Pellegrini starts changing it around. Lets be honest, Most people will start with 3 chelsea so we will pretty much all be in the same boat and early season is anyones guess which teams managers and especially new managers will put out.

In response to Jonty's hot-topic, here is why 3-4-3 has been the dominant formation in past years and why it will continue to be this year.

Midfields and forwards score the most points. This is hard to dispute. Add in the fact that cleansheet totals are going down each year, and the case for including more than 3 defenders per week is shot. Another advantage of having 3 at the back, is that you can get the cheapest playing players in the game (the 4.0 defenders) who are great as bench players who can come on and get the odd point or even the odd start if the fixtures are favorable while freeing up funds up top. That means we have our 3 defenders as a default.

Here's my argument as to why 3-4-3 is better than 3-5-2. There are 5 midfield slots and only 3 striker spots. This means that there are fewer free slots available for strikers, and this is key for flexibility. Strikers have a tendency to hit streaks of form where they score several games in a row. You need to have as many free slots as possible to pick them up. Midfielders on the other hand tend to be longer term investments, with a few high-end exceptions. Having 4 slots available (considering you have a cheap bench sitter/cheap rotator) gives you more than enough chance to choose whoever is coming up strong.

    Here's an example:

    Your strikeforce:

    Van Persie, Suarez, Gayle

You're benching Gayle every week, he's getting the odd goal when he's not in your team, because you're benching him every week. Then the situation comes up where Bony's fixtures start clearing up, he's in hot form, and everyone's picking him up. Your strikeforce has your hands tied at this point. You chose RVP and Suarez because of their captaincy ability, premium price, and they're proven pedigree. Do you then tear that up just to put Bony in? What if Suarez has easy fixtures, but poor form. Ditching Van Persie is unthinkable. He's scoring boat loads and you built this entire team around him..

The last point is about value. You want to have a squad of 15 playing players. As any one with a few years experience can tell you, you never know when you might need that bench player coming on. But then again, you can go 10 weeks if you're on top of transfers and with a bit of luck without having to have your bench player come on at all. Therefore, the logical method is to have a cheap bench player who is good for some playing points at least but not too overwhelmingly good that you're rueing on the bench every week.

Again, midfielders have the edge in this department. Not only do you have more options, but at 4.5m, they're cheaper than your cheapest starting striker, and if you decide to rotate 5th mids in the case of big injuries and stop-gaps, you have a bunch of options by upping slightly to 5.0 while still leaving 3 spots to big midfielders who you can chop and change.

I guess the main point I'm making, is that you will want more than 2 striker spots. Chances are, that among the 20 teams, at least 5 are firing, some will be the best deals of the season at the 7.0 and 6.5 mark. If you give up that striker spot, you're losing that potential player and tying your hands.

With more and more teams favouring the 4-2-3-1 formation, one midfielder is pretty much playing OOP.

      Fellaini
      Michu
      Nolan
      Sessegnon
      Mata
      Cazorla

I'm sure i have missed some but all these players basically played as a second striker for most of last season. Given that midfielders get more points for goals and an extra CS point, i am very much a fan of 3-5-2.

Also, since you have to bench 1 or front 8, realistic cheap forward (Anelka say) £5.5m, but you can get a cheap Mid with some starts for £4.5m. THat's an extra £1m on the pitch for me, not on the bench.

            3-4-3 for me.

Yes, but you can get 4 of them in a 3-5-2. You only have 3 striker spots.

By getting 5 of them you are getting 8 strikers. Its all about who you see scoring more not what formation you play. The top 10mids last year far outscored the top 10 fwds and were much better value too.

and yet all the top teams played 3-4-3 almost without fail. why is that? like camzy said, it's all about getting strikers for those runs of form, even if they're not top scorers overall.

Last year yes Baines as we had Suarez AND RVP killing it so you needed the funds up top. This year it doesn't look like we will have those players doing it.

You need to try and predict where the points are going to be each year and just because 3-4-3 was good last year doesn't mean it will be this year.

Cazorla used wide a lot last season, maybe again this. Sess, Mata could also get moved wide, while Felly probably moves backwards.

Michu is a tempter, but £9m, he's no longer the surprise cheaper but a bona fide 'quality' player. Rather have Wally, Haz, Silva at start, see how it goes.

Camzy what about the 3-5-2 approach? Comes out to a really good team, somewhat different from the template 3-4-3 that I've been seeing here

Mignolet (Davis) Toure Coleman Ivanovic (Chester) (Parr)

      Hazard Walcott Coutinho Mirallas Silva

      Lukaku Benteke (Maynard)

GW2: Replace Ivanovic for 4.5 defender (Collins, Turner, Clyne)
GW3: Replace Lukaku with Sturridge or Rooney in GW4 if he comes?

      Your thoughts???

As always though. There's the what-if. That's what I'm trying to get at. It's about preparing for the what-ifs.

Lambert, Berbatov, Kone, Altidore, Bony could all hit form from the start. They're cheaper than the likes of Mirallas, and strikers get big bandwagons for great value.

Perhaps, but they're also more expensive. And you only have 5.0 striker starters. That means you're 1.0m down elsewhere.

3-5-2 served me very well last year. I think I will toy with it again this year due to the number of OOP midfield options. The extra point for CS and goal also helps.

You could say the same about the mids re value. You had two at 6.5 that you wouldn't want to miss out on last year.

There are very few mids under 7m that you would consider weekly this season compared to last and no essential big fwds that you need which makes 352 more viable compared to other seasons. Its not that long ago 352 or 451 were the default formations

    Greetings.

I can get RVP but need some advice on how to free up the cash. I have Nolan and Snodgrass and would like to keep one and downgrade the other for a 5.0 mid. Strategy being to rotate the remaining two (S or N + 5.0 mid) along with JayRod. Starting 1 or 2 of the three each week. Which midfielder looks best at that price for my situation?

Koren of Hull is liked by many on here, shares of FCs and likely pens. Brady of Hull also a contender, both at £5m. Same price in Kim at CAR, been scoring and assisting in pre-season, but not sure about his long-term starts chances. Thomas CPL £4.5m Mid is popular, if only on price, or you could punt new Spanish signing Campana, a former Barca youth, I believe, he's £5m.

My pitch is CAR Mutch. £4.5m, seems to play regularly at CM, and may have an odd goal or two in him.

      Hope that helps.

I get that they only cost £8.5m, but there are some great £9.0m and £9.5m rotating pairs that give far better point potential on a regular basis...

Many people believe that you can get more points for that extra £1m up front. That's the difference between Snodgrass and Mirallas, for example.

Does anyone know if there's anywhere you can visually see your future matchday squads, say 2 or 3 weeks in advance, in the FPL style of picking your squad for the current gameweek? Would love somewhere to be able to see how my squad will fair up in future gameweeks in the clear way it's shown on the current gameweek.

say bruce gets aroused by figueroa's exploits at left wing back last match, i think that then leaves just 3 midfield spots open for hull players. meyler surely takes one of them as a defensively capable all round player. would he then go with both koren and brady as the other 2? think it's a bit messier than we think if hull go 3-5-2.
