Moving Target

Moving Target – Steven Caulker

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay made his fourth foray into the summer transfer market yesterday afternoon with the acquisition of Steven Caulker from Tottenham. The 21-year-old centre-half joins the Bluebirds on a four-year contract for a reported club record fee of £8m and follows Andreas Cornelius, John Brayford and Simon Moore to the Cardiff City Stadium as Mackay strengthens his squad after last year’s Championship-winning campaign.

The deal represents something of a coup for the Welsh outfit – Caulker was linked with a move to Liverpool, with former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers interested, while the departure of William Gallas from White Hart Lane had suggested he could be pushing for regular game time under Andre Villas-Boas in the season ahead. In an interview with the club’s official website, the defender went on to say:

“First and foremost I want to say how happy I am to have signed with Cardiff City Football Club. I’m delighted to be here and excited for this fresh challenge. I spoke to the Gaffer yesterday, liked what he had to say and am excited about the plans he has for the Football Club. You get the sense of excitement from everybody at the Club in the build-up to the season’s kick-off at West Ham and I’m really looking forward to being part of it. I thank Tottenham for everything they’ve done for me, having been there since I was a kid. But I’m here to back myself up now and show what I can do. This is a fresh start, a new chapter and I’m here to kick on.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Caulker’s career started back in 2009, when, over a season-long loan, he made 44 appearances and produced a pair of assists at Yeovil Town. The following year he was farmed out temporarily once again, producing two goals and a couple of assists over 29 appearances for Bristol City, winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

In 2011/12, Caulker was again sent out on loan but this time he remained within the confines of the top-flight, moving to newly-promoted Swansea. His game time was somewhat curtailed at the Liberty due to a knee injury, though the centre-half still managed 26 first-team appearances and provided a single assist during his time under Rodgers. With Younes Kaboul picking up a long-term knee injury in Gameweek 1 last year, Caulker was retained by Villas-Boas in his debut campaign at the helm and was afforded 17 starts and one sub appearance for the north London outfit, returning two goals and a pair of assists.

On the international stage, the centre-half has turned out for England Under 19 and Under 21s a total of 18 times, finding the net twice, and has scored in his only appearance for the senior side, netting in a 4-2 friendly defeat by Sweden last November.

The Prospects

While his installation at the heart of the Bluebirds back-four will certainly afford Caulker a far greater security of starts at Cardiff, his comparatively costlier price tag across most Fantasy games is a real deterrent. Initially listed as a Tottenham player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he comes in at 5.0 – less budget-friendly than any other likely starter in Mackay’s defence; Andrew Taylor, Mark Hudson and David Marshall are all 4.5, while fellow new boy Brayford is expected to mirror the trio’s cost. Caulker’s arrival raises real question marks over 4.0 priced Ben Turner’s place in the XI given that Hudson, as the club captain, should retain his starting role alongside the former Tottenham man.

Granted, the Bluebirds arrive with the best clean sheet record (18) of the three promoted teams and Caulker’s presence at the back is a real boost but with cheaper or similarly priced options offering greater defensive potential elsewhere, he’s likely to struggle to pick up any FPL suitors. In the Sky Sports game, though, the price is less of an issue – he comes in at 5.2 to Hudson’s 5.0, though a cost of 2.5 in The Sun Dream Team, compared to Hudson and Taylor at 1.0, is again likely to ensure he remains off the radar.

From a Tottenham perspective, Caulker’s departure now leaves just Younes Kaboul and Michael Dawson to battle it out for the role as Jan Vertonghen’s central defensive partner. Both come in at 5.0 in FPL and have the potential to afford us a decent value option – with Vertonghen struggling to shake off an ankle injury in time for the start of the new season, the duo could well be set to take their place for the Gameweek 1 trip to Palace and allow Villas-Boas to assess their respective form. Factor in a strong run of fixtures which sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the first nine Gameweeks (cpl, SWA, ars, NOR, car, CHE, WHM, avl, HUL) and it’s clear that the Tottenham pair could barely be afforded a kinder platform to stake a case for consideration as the north London club look to push on from last term’s fifth place finish.

The sooner Soldado is priced the better. He will start every game pretty much, but his price will depend on timing. Bale sold tomorrow for example and Soldado priced on Monday will mean he is higher. Vice versa and he could be 9 in stead of 10.

Yeah, seems to be doing well in pre season. And Arsenal have a good run of games at the beginning. I'm backing Lukaku to have a good season if Mourinho let's him start most games. So ill wait a few weeks and see if he can nail down a spot and then I can always down grade Giroud back to Lukaku seeing as I already have Walcott

I'm happy with the rest of my though. I really can't think where to spend the extra 1.5m. I could upgrade Mirallas to a 9.0m midfielder but I already have Coutinho and Silva who seem like the best options at that price range. My two other strikers would be Aspas and Giroud which I'm quite happy with.

Sorry, I know you are top dawg but I couldn't disagree more. I am an ultra fan of Negredo, a true comparison to the almighty Shearer. They are so similar, in fact Negredo has more pace and puts the fear in to defenders, especially the meeker, slimmer type like the Arsenal guys.
Game time could be an issue but he and Falcao through build and ruthlessness are on a par.

I'm no top dawg. Just have an opinion like everyone else.

I rate Negredo. Very strong goalscorer, but he doesn't get involved outside the box really. I can't remember him ever having a really good game for Spain in all the times I've watched him.

True, he's weird like that, but has there ever been such a player ideally suited for the physical extremes of the premier league? He has attitude and a robust style of play that will really throw a lion amongst the hummingbirds. He may struggle against some of the very strong defenders, but they look far and few in the PL at the mo. Even Vidic is looking a bit skin and bone, good luck to anyone defending against this new kind of challenge.

    Just a prelim team, but I'm still dabbling. I'm not including Bale as it looks like he's on his way, if Levy has any sense he'll sell. Also makes me tempted to bring in Soldado. But some feedback would be great;

    Mignolet (Boruc)
Collins - Alcaraz - Clyne (Chester, Parr)
Hazard - Silva - Coutinho - Jarvis (Thomas)
    Giroud - Lukaku - RvP

    Thanks guys

I drafted something very similar yesterday:

              Mignolet, Lewis
              Toure, Turner, Shaw, Collins, Chester
              Hazard, Walcott. Lampard, Silva, Thomas

                My GW2 plan is

                Lukaku > J Rod

I don't think so. Dembele is a holding MF all the way. He doesn't have dynamic passing or shooting ability. He'll win balls, hold them, maintain his possession and space. He might be a good shout for new Bonus points but rarely would that garner him 2 or 3 points.

      He's a strange one.
Seems to possess the attributes of a more advanced player, but his mentality is that of a central mid
I wouldn't describe him as holding tho, so I have an inkling he will have more license to get forward than Paulinho - but I could be wrong, his lack of goals throughout most if his career is perhaps the only reason he isn't at a genuine European heavyweight

The reality is there will be an ok replacement. There are genuine rumblings that his departure will include the arrival of Di Maria, not ideal as he doesn't like food, where as Bale just likes eating Minotaurs with a side of teeth. But Spurs will have a very strong new member of the squad otherwise there will be uproar.

Should be nailed to start both DGW, even if you allow for a yellow which is likely with him, there's a near enough 3 points in the bag there
that's £1.5m per point - RVP needs at least a goal and assist to beat that return....

I like Dzeko for the first couple weeks, with Pellegrini talking him up so much. Once Aguero's back in the frame, it'll then be harder to say who'll be more regular. Can see him and Negredo both starting too until Aguero's back.

Boyata! I had him when he was on loan at Bolton, came on as a sub and scored then failed miserably for the rest of the season.. 🙂

Starting to feel I too fell into the optimism trap at the beginning of the transfer window. If we don't get Suarez (which is looking far from likely) then who else is left?

    Soldado a card magnet ?

Mala leche, bad milk, is a theme that he returns to often. It means edge, nastiness and he says he inherited it from his father, who was a talented amateur player. Soldado picked up 10 yellow cards last season, mostly for confronting referees, and admits to verbal sparring with centre-backs. "You say some really terrible stuff that you later regret," he told Cayetano Ros in El Paîs

that is a definite worry for him. Looks like a bit of a white older Balotelli without the fireworks 😀

I think he's worth a punt. Even if Bale stays I may well contemplate getting him instead of Bale.

Remember when he stamped on Van De Sar for no reason in the CL a few years ago? He sure is a ratty piece of work

He does love a yellow card, but what is key is he doesn't get sent off. A couple of one game bans but that is really quite normal. The extra aggression is even a desire for some players, look at all the top guys like that Liverpool bloke with the funny teeth (which he likes to use).
