Rate My Team – Under The Hood Preview Movie

Grab the popcorn, it’s Saturday night at the movies. We conclude our Rate My Team preview set with an epic 14-minute, stat filled video outlining just how “Professor” Chris Atkinson’s statistical model works.

Admittedly, this is one for the hardcore number freaks but, even so, we hope this offers some insight into the workings behind the Projections and the Rate My Team tool and the effort we put in to maintain it.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

        Think he's a great pick for at least the first 6 games. Nice fixtures and only 8.5m. Even if Suarez were to sign and Giroud starts the season well, Suarez would probably then play just behind Giroud

              Bony, he's in a better team with better support. Berbatov is a genius but if he has a moody, lazy period for a while he won't score too heavily.

      You get a team where players are going to score / assist aka gain the most points ignoring a subs bench by selecting cheap has chips players. This is very good especially on a DGW has players score double points. To sum it up, its just to gain a higher team value and get more money early.

      Most people are doing it because they've put in their maximum allocation of Villa and Chelsea players to take advantage of the DGW. Impossible to change them around to get a full team out for GW3 unless they take a points hit

          Ok not impossible. But considering the difficulty of choosing nailed-on chelsea defenders, and guaranteeing minutes for Lukaku (who most people pick), I don't think it's the best strategy unless using the WC

    Talking of rate my team - what do ppl think about this one:

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Mertesacker, Terry, Collins (Clyne, Chester)
    Silva, Hazard (c), Kim, Snodgrass (Thomas)
    Lukaku, Benteke, RVP

    Idea would be to replace lukaku and Terry weeks 2 and 3.

    Or should I downgrade RVP to Dzeko and upgrade Kim to someone better?

    All thoughts welcome!

        Fair bit of flexibility there on 343 and 352. Option to downgrade one of the under performing mids to a more expensive striker. Switching to 5 across mid also allows for benching Lukaku against utd week 2 should you wish to do so

    Mark, I saw yesterday that another site is having to stop providing Opta stats to their members due to new rules following Opta's recent tie-in with the Premier League (this other site is refunding all memberships as a result). Is there any danger that the same thing applies to FFS or could it be that a different set of data is being provided?

      And weeping and gnashing of teeth! Chelsea certainly are searching for a new number 1 striker, evident in their pursuit of Wayne Rooney. Should this occur, then Torres's days are numbered for me. Also the will find a number of clubs willing to pay a decent fee for him. Best avoided.

    So many people here were complaining that they could only afford Bale or RVP, and they choose Bale because 14mil was too much. However, Bale seems to be on his way out, but those people still haven't shifted to RVP.

    Are you expecting RVP's price to drop or do you just think he's not worth 14?
