Rate My Team – Under The Hood Preview Movie

Grab the popcorn, it’s Saturday night at the movies. We conclude our Rate My Team preview set with an epic 14-minute, stat filled video outlining just how “Professor” Chris Atkinson’s statistical model works.

Admittedly, this is one for the hardcore number freaks but, even so, we hope this offers some insight into the workings behind the Projections and the Rate My Team tool and the effort we put in to maintain it.

If you missed parts one and two of this series, you can catch them here and here.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I just crammed RVP, Walcott, Michu, Coutinho, Lukaku and Dzeko on a squad and it looks pretty spiffy.

My RVP team is okay but I thought I'd see what kind of balance I could afford without him. This was what I came up with ...

    Migs
    Lescott, Mert, Cole
    Hazard, Coutinho, Silva, Walcott
    Giroud, Lukaku, Aspas

    Davis, Brayford, Chester, Thomas

    What do you think folks?

I do think this wholesale move towards cheap defenses may backfire though. You need a steady stream of points and cleanies from your backline to supplement low scoring gameweeks.

    My current draft:

    Boruc - Davis
    Kolo - Collins - Mbiwa - Brayford - Chester
    Hazard - Walcott - Coutinho - Mirallas - Thomas
    RVP - Dzeko - Lukaku

Considering downgrading Mbiwa allowing me to swap Lukaku to Giroud if needed after the DGW. Any opinions or suggestions? Thanks. (I want to get Mig, but I would need to downgrade Cout and do not have a cheaper replacement in mind at the moment.)

Alarm bells on that defence, even your most expensive pick, Kolo may not be nailed on starter, plus it's fairly common knowledge that Saints pretty shite at keeping cleanies.

Moreover, Lukaku and Dzeko aren't nailed on either.

Plus side you have RVP and that template but solid midfielders

      Morning La Roja.

I like the team, especially the Kompany pick. But wouldn't you get Michu instead of Bony? I know he's a million cheaper, but Michu's more proven?

        Morn AK,

Couldn't agree more on Michu pick instead of Bony, but I can't possibly justify this change. Get rid of Theo, Coutinho? Really tough one as Michu looked pretty sharp at the warming up games.

Bony has scored 37 goals last year, was a player of the year in Dutch leauge, so I expect him to score at least couple of goals within these 3 tough games Swans have.

I will give Cech for couple of months, Mourinho's team usually tight at the back.

Ultimately, expect Lukaku, I've gone for "nailed on" starters. If you create the team with RVP, it is very difficult to come with a nailed on starters team.

I've been a strong advocate of the 2 big hitter + rotate 3 budget player in defence the last 3 seasons. Now considering a possible switch to fit Mirallas in, instead of Snodgrass.

    A or B lads?

    A) KOSC/LESCOTT - Toure - Collins - Chester - Brayford + SNODGRASS

Everyone on here thinks so but Walcott will play wide more this season where he played upfront quite a lot before Jan where he scored most of his goals, Mata should outscore him oer the season and may get a sub against Hull for 30 minutes, he could score/assist. Lukaku should get double fgame week coverage but faces more competition than Giroud does. I think it's a tough call. Money makes me prefer the first one though.

full-season totals are irrelevant, i'm not even looking beyond the first 5 or 6 games right now, but yeah 'by miles' was a bit of an exaggeration. 😛

i don't think lukaku or mata are good picks, neither will get much coverage for the DGW imo. walcott should comfortable outscore giroud over the season though... if i recall correctly he got most of his points when giroud was playing as the central striker, but i might be wrong about that...

Which position will he play? With Benteke staying I'm not sure how much game time Helenius will get.

to Baines or not to Baines?

Undecided on the centerpiece of my defense... Baines or Mert + 2mm (to upgrade my strikers when the time is right). Also, is Coleman a viable alternative, or is Baines worth it for his set pieces?

baines will destroy, the problem is that most everyone wants a chelsea defender too for the dgw, and getting both leaves your defense looking way too loaded.

          not me, i'm a luiz man. 😉

baines is a seasoned and proven fpl star who will outscore many heavy hitter mids/strikers. everton's fixtures are pretty good.... no particular reason to avoid him, methinks. he'll outscore coleman by enough to make the extra money worth it IMO.

C and E in real life, but for the fpl game C and D if I'm honest. Realize I'm picking brand new players to England but I just have a hunch.

      in order:
      C
      B
      E
      A
      D

      assuming we're talking for GW1. over the whole season i'd prob go C, D, B, E, A.

Hi. Does anyone know if Baker is likely to start regularly for AVL? Team News says yes, but it also says Tevez will start for City... He would be a decent cheap DGW defender at 4.0.

In other news, was looking for a MID up to 6.0 and had Morrison but noticed that Brunt had the same points per min at 0.5 less. I know he's not a favourite around here (and you might have noticed I have an odd obsession with him) but he cranks out ~100 a season year after year and yet his price always remains low. I think he's a potential bargain.

Depends on how badly you want City attack in your team for their first few fixtures.

I've been stuck on Snograss all this while. Considering shaving a million off my defence to get Mirallas now.

anyone going with Guzan from the start? Could be lots of saves on offer.

    Currently on this:

    Guzan (Davis)
Toure, Cole, Collins (Brayford and Parr)
    Hazard, Silva, Nolan, Mirallas (Barkley)
    RVP Lukaku Aspas

Have 0.5 in the bank in this draft. Tempted to swap Aspas for Dzeko and change Silva to Coutinho.

the problem, which I have just realised, is my strategy is to go with one more expensive playing goalkeeper longer-term and one 4.0, which means I'd have to waste a transfer getting rid of Guzan.
