Rate My Team – Under The Hood Preview Movie

Grab the popcorn, it’s Saturday night at the movies. We conclude our Rate My Team preview set with an epic 14-minute, stat filled video outlining just how “Professor” Chris Atkinson’s statistical model works.

Admittedly, this is one for the hardcore number freaks but, even so, we hope this offers some insight into the workings behind the Projections and the Rate My Team tool and the effort we put in to maintain it.

If you missed parts one and two of this series, you can catch them here and here.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Morning, Gentlemen,

I see The Daily Mail are running the Mourinho/Rooney story again. I would love him to go, so that I can have 4 x Chelsea. Would probs then lose Lukaku and put in Hazard instead. I doubt very many of my rivals in leagues would catch on to the fact that you could have 4 Chelsea players to begin with 🙂

Sorry to be THAT guy that gives an Option C... but usually it's template comment. Mine not

      My 11.5 preference is
      Terry and Lescott/Koscielny

Not sure you have the right Chelsea 6.5 option there. Cashley for nailed on, or Ivan for threat. Luiz is too big a risk of 90-120mins for mine

Looking for some rate my team action if anyone has a spare minute to look over this lot:

    Mingolet | Robles
    Azpilicueta | Rat | Turner | Clichy | Clyne
    Walcott | Silva | Hazard | Dembele | Mirallas
    Lukaku | Benteke | Anelka

Not sure if people have seen this but it might de-rail the Lukaku train a bit:

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has suggested that his side will alter their style of play this season to bring the best out of Fernando Torres.

Torres, 29, joined the Blues from Liverpool for £50 million in 2011, but has struggled to reproduce the form that won him so many admirers at Anfield.

The Spain international has found himself playing alone up top for Chelsea, and has often drawn criticism for his displays.

However, Tores still managed a respectable 23 goals for the club last term, and Mourinho feels this is proof that the striker can get back to his best if the Blues can adapt their game to suit him.

“I work based on his qualities and I try the team to play for his qualities because sometimes it is easier to say the player failed, the player is not playing well, the player is not performing,” Mourinho told ESPN's Roger Bennett in an exclusive interview.

“But if you ask players to play in a way where they are not playing for their qualities, it is a bit difficult. Fernando is not a player to play with the ball at his feet, for that we have other players.

“Fernando is a man of depth, he is a man of movement, he likes to go and get the back of defenders, so this is Fernando. So if we can adapt our game and give him what he needs, I think he will get success again.”

Interesting. So basically is he saying he isn't really a target man? I can agree with that. Torres was often isolated a lot on the ball at Chelsea and thats not his strong suit. Mourinho might get the best out of him but they will need to change their style.

Although that doesn't explain why Mourinho mightn't change back to a more traditional style with Lukaku as a target man up front? He's strong on the ball and could do the job Drogba did so well.

But I had read on here and elsewhere that Cahill was Mourinho's fave and Terry has to "fight for his place". I'll wait and see I suppose. And I'm not 100% on Oscar but he's a player I like.

Nasty certainly won't be back to start the season if they are still uncertain as to whether he needs an operation. Also Citeh have at least 2 cleanies coming in the first 3 GW's plus he offers a goal threat.

Looking ahead, at that price point he's easy to switch to an Arsenal defender if Nasty comes back quicker than expected and there is rotation

In may case, probably for the whole season. If his price eventually drops by a million or two, I might consider him later on. The same goes for RVP.

so you're going without bale and rvp? interesting... I would think at least one would be a good idea as a strong armband candidate every week. where are you spending the extra money you save by not having either rvp or bale?

          I have a front 8 of

          Silva, Walcott, Coutinho, Oscar, Wilshere
          RVW, Aspas, Lukaku

My captains for GW1 are Lukaku, Oscar
          Thereafter, Walcott, Giroud

I operate on the assumption that an Arsenal player (most likely Walcott or Giroud) will score more goals/assists in any given game week than will either Bale or RVP, so captaining either would be nonsensical for me.

I plan on getting Giroud in for GW3 (before you ask).

question marks over oscar, rvw, aspas, and lukaku imo (though I do rate lukaku quite well). also wilshire isn't too great fantasy wise imo. if you're going without bale AND rvp, then you've gotta have hazard for sure imo

also triple arsenal ainplus an arsenal capt? I think you're banking on them a bit too much....

Yeah, the game doesn't let me pick more than 3 unfortunately.

I include Hazard in the set of players that Walcott and Giroud should outscore any given gameweek. Come to think of it, the set is somewhat universal.

it's Bale or Robin for me. Given Robin's first few are a bit tricky looking I'd be tempted to start with Bale and have a strategy in mind for getting RVP. But I really want Bale to go (purely from an FPL perspective).

oh I know! he's a huge favorite everywhere in the States. I'm jealous of my friends who got to go to the match. I bet playing the wc qualifier here earlier this summer and experiencing the atmosphere at Century Link sure helped too.

as a Sounders fan I'm stoked! but it's still a bit sad to see him go from having a great season with Fulham two years ago, then being full of ambition to play in the CL and make a big move to Spurs and then just a year later see him leaving Europe all together... but obviously there were lots of factors at stake

Possibly a City player at striker, Dzeko/Aguero or Silva instead of Walcott and Giroud up top.

Starting to think 3-5-2 could be the way to go for now, maybe more nailed on mids, and the modern way of 1 up top and 3 behind is the way most teams are going?

Call me selfish but I would like England to lose the remaining wickets quickly and follow on in the current test match.

One, it will keep the series interesting and two, with Pietersen as my captain I would like England to have more batting time than bowling time.

Re-post - more criticism needed please! So far the + outweighing the -

    This was not my keeper combo idea, but I'm warming to it;

    Start with Cech + Lewis
    GW2 Cech to Marshall
You get Cech's double points, then a combo for 8.5m which is self-covering and which could be upgraded to Mignolet if marshall under-performs.
However, I recommend members put Marshall in RMT or Projections against Mignolet ...
    What do people think?

Not sure too many people would want to spend their transfers on a GK unless absolutely essential. If you start with Cech, you play him every week and just forget about it barring injuries.

      IMO

I think most people starting with Cech will be doing so because of the DGW and will plan to transfer him out

...or, just start with the double Cardiff from the off, frees up bags of cash - but you miss out on some DGW points

Safer to start with the likes of Cole. Has more upside. Takes a mistake for the Goalie plan to go horribly wrong and you lose out on the Clean Sheets.

They don't play the same position. Stone is being groomed as a CB. Hibbert is Coleman's competition at RB
