Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

Will Terry play both games in DGW? I could really do with that 0.5m right now...!

Other option is to downgrade Mannone -> 4.0 (I have Migs) but I really don't want a non-playing keeper.

Other other option is downgrade Nolan -> Snodgrass, but I really fancy Nolan to do well... 🙁

Very difficult to tell. They do have options to rotate at CB, and the games are close, so I wouldn't count on it. Personally I'd do either of the two options you suggested; Migs will play every week anyway, and I'd rather have Snodgrass than Nolan in any event.

Good evening, gentlemen! Just a quick question:

    A) Aguero and Rodriguez

    B) Dzeko and Sturridge

I suppose it largely depends upon how much weight you afford to Pellegrini's recent comments.

I think Dzeko will get more game time. Negredo and Aguero are going to do more rotation with one another, especially given Negredo is new and finding his feet, and Aguero is a wee bit fragile. They both complement Dzeko.

I might wait on Hooper to see who and how Norwich plays up front. Anelka is a bit punty, but Morrison is a decent shout. So I think I'll go Altiday. I want him the first couple of weeks just in case, because their fixtures are terrible around GW 4. Could do well, and I like the idea of Sunderland's new style. Can always ship him if he is a dud.

      Thanks for listening

Possibly a biased view but I'm expecting a big season from Nolan if Andy Carroll can stay fit, with West Ham's favourable fixtures early on I think Nolan is good value. Nolan and Mirallas offer a goal threat whereas Snoddy is more of an assist merchant

I think a midfield of Hazard, Walcott, Courinho, Mirallas and then someone like Thomas or Kim is the way to go. Very template, but not a bad thing at the start of the season. Especially when your rivals are casuals with the likes of Mata and Michu and more in their teams.

I posted about this a week or so ago. There's very little point in having a player who gets the odd goal or assist now and then at the start of the season. He'll just get sold for newer shinier options and drop in value.

I don't fancy Arsenal at all (my favourite PL team) for clean sheets early on. I'd suggest ditching Mert, but then your defence isn't strong anyway. So perhaps for Seamus Coleman, given they have a decent opening run, and he will play the easier games in midfield.

Cech is also an obvious one. I'd reduce him to Migs, and have a 4.0 non-playing back-up.

RVP sis another one you may want to hang off for the opening few weeks. I'd suggest Soldado or Dzeko. Midfield is okay, but Kim is perhaps someone to bring in after a few games.

Just opinions. I'm sure I'll be proven wrong!

13 mins - So close! A Tomkins free-kick causes havoc as Reid nods it down again. The ball looks to have evaded everybody as it bounces across the penalty area but Morrison reacts quickest and shoots. The shot is blocked but the ball rolls only as far as Cole, who spins and thumps his effort against the post! The ball falls out to Nolan, who cannot control his first-time effort from about eight yards and it just clears the crossbar.

    Typical.

Can you guys tell me what you think of this team:

    Boruc Mannone
    Ivanovic Collins clyne Brayford Chester
    Hazard Walcott silva/coutinho mirallas Thomas
    Anelka lukaku dzeko

6.5m in the bank. Got enough money in the bank to do lukaku -> RVP. Can't decide between: 1)coutinho or silva?
    2) Got a spare 0.5 where should I spend it?

What do you think of the team?

I would use that extra 0.5 on Anelka, I'm not convinced he will get the minutes to have an impact and you already have thomas as bench fodder. Somebody did a great post on the minutes that the Baggies attack were afforded last season and it was clear Shane Long was their main man even with Lukaku there. JROD or Weimann for any early punt maybe, they seem nailed on at least.

Ok lads, any Chelsea experts out there.

Cahill has played virtually every minute of pre season surely this means he's nailed on and is 0.5 cheaper than Cole, Ivan and Luiz.

    Bargain or Benchfodder?

So Newcastle have got Remy on a year long loan. They've got the semblance of a good squad now if they can keep everyone fit, bearing in mind they had a nightmare with injuries last year.

Remy, Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Tiote, Cisse - some really good players there. Remy and HBA in particular could score well. Fixtures are pretty decent too once you get past man city away. Could be dark horses for a decent run.

    Mertesacker Coleman Collins
    Coutinho Silva Walcott Hazard(c)
    Gayle Lukaku(vc) Anelka

    Davies Wanyama Clyne Chester

All but 9 at home, 2 DGW players, 6.0m bank

    Then for GW2

    Lukaku>RVP

    Mignolet
    Mertesacker Coleman Clyne
    Coutinho Silva Walcott Hazard Wanyama
    RVP Anelka

    Davies Gayle Collins Chester

My guess is that Ba will play ahead of Torres, and Torres ahead of Lukaku.

If you mean "why do Inter suck," it's because they only have 2 good fullbacks, 1 good striker, and a decent goalkeeper. Owner needs to sell, then blow the team up.

Steer clear of Wilshere, great player but terrible fantasy prospect. No set pieces and he rarely scores. A few people have said he might play "in the hole" this year but I haven't seen much evidence so far in pre-season, he has been playing deep pulling the strings as per usual. I'm more intrigued by Zaha...
