Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

So the perceived wisdom is that Mata will miss the first DGW game because of the trip to Sth America. Torres and Azpi the same.

Silva should be OK as City play Monday night.

What about Cazorla? I'm really keen on having him, do we think Wenger will rest him on the very first Saturday of the season? I'm inclined to think he'll play him to ensure a good start.

Any views? (apart from don't get Cazorla 😉 )

True, true. It's just some managers like to rest them after a long haul.

i think the common consensus recommends taking Walcott. His performance PER MINUTE was significantly better than Cazorla last time out and comes in a sweet .5m cheaper.

You're thoughts on the potential absence of Spanish players for GW1 has caught my attention. I'm currently lining up with a reasonably predicable team..

      Cech, (Lewis)
      Coleman, Toure, Collins, (Chester), (Brayford)
      Coutinho, Mata, Walcott, Hazard, (Thomas)
      Agbonlahor, Bony, Benteke

What are your thoughts on this? Agbonlahor is in for GW1 for the Villa double but I then plan to swap him for a better striker, any ideas?

In terms of Mata, should I swap him out for another Chelsea player who isn't likely to be on the Spanish trip?

Not a lot been said about Bony on hear but he seems a good bet after the pre season he's had, or is that just me?

Is it because he scored a hat-trick against Reading?

The price increases just by not being a "promotion player".
Same way RvP increased after lower total by being Man U.

£7m is hard to justify for me. Until that hat trick he was totally disappointing

Okay, thanks for the info. About Soldado, would love him GW1, but he has the Spain friendly so my guess is he misses the first game, or debuts as a sub. Dzeko will be gone soon, but Pellers said he was #1 striker, and I want city coverage for their first games. He can do so much as a sub too, and 7.5M is a bargain IMO.

    Zab - Coleman - mertesacker ( parr - brayford )
    Hazard - Walcott - coutinho - snodgrass - wanyama

      Not convinced to be fair.

Davis wont play, you may aswell ship out .5 extra to have a regular reserve keeper just in case. McGregor, Boruc, Mannone/Westwood, Speroni, Marshall....

Zab...brilliant defender, best RB last season - new management, place could be under threat to mich richards...it's a risk.

Wanyama...literally wont do anything. you may aswell get KIM for cardiff instead, he scores goals and will be a regular + he's had a blinding pre-season.

Moore....find the extra and upgrade to Anelka, Moore will be lucky to score twice all season.

Research Kim from Cardiff, he's same price as Wanyama and he's been scoring alot all pre-season + Malky has said hes going to be a key player in the Cardiff side. He'll be the 'gem' of this season 🙂

    Cole Collins Evra (Clyne, M.Turner)
    Hazard Mirallas Nolan Silva (Thomas)

Don't have the "Big Two" either and still feel pretty happy about it. Evra is a nice touch, haven't seen him in too many teams here. Nolan could be gold if Carroll is repaired, but the latter could suffer from lack of a proper pre-season in the first couple of games; that could affect Nolan a bit too. Front line is same as mine except I've got Aspas...

      Evra is a good shout.

Good midfield with plenty of goals, though personally I'd rather have Gerrard or Michu over Silva who I see as being rotated more often and also has never hit double figure goals in a league season.

Early doors, I'm backing Dzeko over Negredo. Think Pellegrini likes Dzeko too as he's already settled, good pre-season, and he's backed him in press conferences.

I've not got Bale or RVP in my team.

    Coleman or Toure?

Did have Mignolet and Cole. Have decided to go Cech and one of the above. Is Toure really nailed on? I know he's been playing regularly pre-season, but he's just so crap I can't really convince myself he'll be first choice.

I heard a rumour that Mirallas has been taking over set piece duties (mostly corners) from Baines during the pre-season. Can any Everton fans or observers both confirm this and also give an insight as to what the rational is for a change. I watched a decent amount of them last season and it wasn't obvious to me at all that a change needed to be made.

Maybe even some uber-statisticians can tell us if there are some numbers behind the scenes as to Baines and Evertons performance come corner time (somewhere I had in my head they should be very strong at offensively).

I've watched a couple of Everton's pre-season friendlies and Baines took corners where a left footed in-swinger was desired (that's what I read into it anyway). I reckon he took roughly half the corners in those two games.

      1) Paul Scharner's agent will have a meeting with Steve Bruce in Germany tomorrow to discuss a move to Hull.

Scharner is having trouble accepting that Hamburger SV no longer want him at the club though, so anything could happen. He's also referring to himself in the third person in the German media, which is always a mistake.

      2) WBA are hoping to complete the loan signing of Scott Sinclair by the end of the week.

They definitely know how to keep CS at the Britannia. Picked up Cameron at the end of last season and wasn't disappointed. Cheaper option than Bego at the time.

          That was under defensive Pulis.
Hughes thinks he is something special so will try! O get a rugby side playing like Brazil 1970 ... with horrible results.

I would say that MUST is a strong word, for a team that only won 9 games last season and has changed what many consider and over achieving manager for a.......well for Hughes!

Also their back 5 which is the traditional main stay for FPL comes in it 3 x 5.5m and 2 x 5.0m, many are looking to get guaranteed Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton defenders for that kind of money.

If you want a punt though then Pennant may be a 4.5m option and I think Adam will surprise many, and I have personally championed Crouch already here as he always got 130 pts for a negative team scoring very few goals indeed which will increase this season.

Can any give me some help with this rather crap conundrum I have:

      1) I need a 4.5 Newcastle defender that isn't Yanga-M and is likely to start. Is Stephen Taylor likely to play?
      2) I need a 4.5 striker, preferably from Hull but not a rule, who is likely to get some starts. Currently thinking Palace's Dobbie.

Yanga is just as likely to play as Taylor is, if not more so.

        You don't need a 4.5 striker. Nobody needs a 4.5 striker.

        But yeah Dobbie why not

        1) Avoid mags def. Can see them conceding plenty.
        2) If you're desperate for an uber cheap striker then find the extra 0.5m and go Gayle (Palace)

If you need a 4.5m striker, I think you've messed up somewhere along the way.

I think Dobbie is your only chance at that price. He could be a starter but only time will tell.

Thanks for all the replies. It's an effort to get RVP in the tam if necessary. At the moment though i'm going to go without.

The reason I was so specific was because i've already settled on most of my team.

        Thanks again.

I need a 4.0m starting chelsea defender and a 5.0m starting City striker........sadly I don't think either of us are going to get what we 'need' 🙂
