Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

Definitely a good no-RVP team and close to template. I have the very same midfield as you right now but I think that your front line is a little 'punty'. Personally I would go for at least one that is 200% nailed on and then pick one of Lukaku or Dzeko.

Thoughts on this? I believe Bale might stay mainly because Levy is involved. I am also very fond of Bony; I believe he will prove to be fixture proof.

    Cech / Davis
    Mert / Toure / Amorebieta / Collins / Brayfrod
    Bale / Hazard / Walcott / Mirallas / Morrison
Bony / Dzeko / (Lambert/Berbs - depends on whether or no Fullham sign a striker)

After GW1 I'll be shipping Cech for Boruc and go from there.

It's good overall. Don't get Davis for your 4m keeper, get the lowest owned one so he doesn't drop to 3.9.
Perhaps downgrade Morrison to 5m and upgrade Lambert/ Berbatov to Lukaku.

No so much as what is wrong but what is right with him, as good if not better options at 4.5m and a much better option at 5.5m.

And in midfield Yaya is going to play deeper than ever and has never been fantasy gold for the value. Kags/Chadli/Ramirez are all massive rotation risks and all unproven in the Prem. And I am guessing one of your mids will be benched which is an overspend by at least a million over many other options.

All just my opinions of course but I think ones that would be shared by most on here.

I would also have my doubts over the game time of both Baker and Diakite as well to be honest.

I don't have the ambition of turning every time close to template but a midfield of:

Hazard + Walcott + Silva/Michu/Coutinho + Snodgrass + Kim/Koren = exactly the same cost as your current options!

I did Thomas to Kim. Think it will be worth it points wise. And even if those points are left on your bench, you'll benifit price wise.

Stereotypical answer but I think it depends on the balance of the rest of your team. For me yes it is but you don't get any points for a player on your bench but if you are taking punts up front *cough*Dzeko*cough*Lukaku* then having a potential for your 5th mid is a great investment.

I have had an interesting debate that an okay performing 4.5m will greatly increase in price compared to a well performing 5.0m as so many will have 4.5m mids in their teams that don't get any game time and so are likely to just jump on the top playing 4.5m after a week or two.

Hope Soldado will be 9 so I can ditch Benteke for him after the DGW. Latest:

    Mig (Marshall)
    Kompany Collins Parr (Shaw Chester)
Hazard (c) Walcott Coutinho Michu (Kim)
    Benteke (v) Giroud Aspas.

I'm starting to feel good about that one.

Re. Chelsea, I had Lukaku but I think Benteke is more nailed on and will probably score at least the same points as Lukaku even though Lukaku has easier fixtures, he'll get less minutes. Maybe a Chelsea defender could go for Kompany, true, good point. Maybe Luiz.

As for Man City, I'm not touching their forward line with a 10 foot pole. Are you crazay? Only a medium on a mix of speed and meth could predict who will play. Aguero is the most nailed on but his form is meh... Aspas is not nailed on either but at least he's in good form, Sturridge is always injured and Suarez is always banned.

why plan on selling Benteke? 2 premeditated transfers ain't worth a flyer on a Premiership noob playing for Tottenham. And I count 2 because you're only going to buy Benteke back later.
Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Your team is deep enough to get past gw3 with a belgian bench behemoth.

I love your team... makes me want to think more seriously about losing RVP.

A electronic subscription to the Times will include almost live goals and post-game highlights from this season. I have one as I can't buy it in Tokyo, this could be useful if the commentary is in any way decent.

Although they mention Cascarino in their advertising blurb so I'm not optimistic. Still saves me waiting for MOTD.

MOTD is going to be on iplayer for download next season too right?

I'm sure this will have been mentioned before, but in case anyone here hasn't considered it.

If Bale is forced to stay by Levy or Madrid lose interest by buying someone else who's chairman is more flexible on £50mil+ offers for a player.
Is Bale going to be as focused on his game for Spurs, having had his Champions League ambitions denied him?

Even though Bale has said nothing publicly, I'm sure he's just bursting to move to RM. Who wouldn't? He's 24 and the world is his lobster if he gets the move.
I admire the way he's remained tightlipped unlike Suarez who just can't seem to keep his trap shut. There's more than one way to engineer a move.
BUT if Bale IS forced to stay (which I think is unlikely) I reckon he'll be useless for a month or two until he gets his head around the whole situation. So I'm avoiding him, 100%

I do believe that he wants to go but of all player he is one that I can see not wanting to go just yet. I have met the man and he is very far from what I would call worldly and neither is his girlfriend who he has dated since school and there kid is less than a year old. A move abroad at this time in his life certainly would be a very big ask on a mere personal level.

Is it really worth getting MIGs over boruc and a rotator keepers get 2 points per 5 saves. Nows he's at Liverpool surely he won't need to make as many saves this year so losing out there and is that 1m best spent elsewhere?

      The consensus is

      Chadli Soldado Lennon
      Dembele
      Sandro Paulinho

But I would say there is a good chance we'll see a Townsend or Sigurdsson chucked in somewhere. Lennon doesn't score many, Chadli is unproven and Sigurdsson has the creative influence no one else at the club has.

@ RCA: Thought your 'list' post from the other night was very entertaining and light-hearted.

Shame it was, ah ... umm ... 'not received in the spirit in which it was intended.'

I support you and agree with your thoughts on the matter. That is all.

First rule of HC is you cannot talk about HC.

Or look it in the eyes.

Or wink slyly from across the room at it.

            Or ...

Let's just say there are lots of rules about HC.

TorresMagic stopped replies. I think the reason was that I mentioned ..u n r etc.
It got loads of upvotes but was moderated because this place has changed.
            Changed utterly.
I think the new system has failed utterly. Banter is a huge part of the reason I come on here and my post the other night couldn't be construed as offensive to anyone.
There was a whole discussion afterwards, but that seems to be have removed as well.

      Dont really like your forwards.

Having both Lukaku and Dzeko risky imo. Would choose 1 (And start with lukaku since he has a DGW, if Dzeko is starting and scoring alot you can sell lukaku and buy dzeko)
Also not a big fan of Podolski. 0.5 more and you can buy Sturridge who IMO will score pretty high in the first 6 gameweeks.

Great midfield, maybe a slight over spend at the back, but definitely concerns up front. There is a good chance that none of those could start all at once which would leave you with stacks of funds subbed out. If you want to take a couple of punts I would get a shoe in along side them also.......but I suspect that you have already decided that Podolski won't make your final cut.

Seriously thinking about getting two cheap defender pairs(4+4 &4,5+4,5) that rotate well to play + 1 expensive fixture proof defender (Baines?) Any1 else?

Something like Palace/Hull and WHUM/Southampton. Play 2 of those + Baines in a 3 man defence.
    Opinions?

Second half of last year some really cheap high point scoring strikers turned up. But you're right I think. some very good fair priced striking options about. Which helps with the pricey midfield.

    IF Bale stays

    Mignolet
    Clyne/Collins - Chester/Parr - Luiz (Baines)
    Walcott - Bale - Hazard - Brady/Thomas
    Soldado* - Lukaku(Dzeko) - Sturridge

*Assuming Soldado costs 9. Afraid He'll be near 9,5-10 tho.
The () are transfers im making in GW 1 and 2
the / means those 2 players will rotate (Their teams rotate well)
    4,0 keeper with Mignolet.

Good team or am I lost?

      Given is 9.3% as well.

I think Davis has a good chance but with that % ownership he is far too risky. The short answer is no one unless Given can get a move to another PL club as a starting GKer. Although I know little about the chances of Price and Jakupovic.
