Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

I want to replace Mirallas with Silva
I'll downgrade clyne and collins but that leaves me .5 short
    any ideas?
I would downgrade mannone but i see his value increasing when he gets the no 1 role

    Hart (Mannone)
    Mertesacker Zabaleta Luiz (Clyne) (Collins)
    Walcott Hazard Coutinho Mirallas (Thomas)
    Lambert RVW Berbatov

Personally I would downgrade Hart to either Migs or to another 4.5m for a rotation. You already have City coverage in def and get a little more still with Silva in midfield.

I'd wait and see which Silva turns up this year first Zeaflea. You can get him in, if he is back to his best, Mirallas should hold the position well for you.
      Downgrade RVW if anyone, imo.

True, I hate to recommend 'template' options but it becomes natural after reading most RMT/RMT responses 😀

Doubling up on Citeh defence is big money though and he needed some funds. Like you say, he could take out RVW, Hooper is a decent .5 cheaper alternative or Darren Bent...wherever he may go.

I try hard not to fall into the template trap too. It's difficult to avoid though isn't it? 🙂

When all said and done the template teams are still only a guess from the majority.
They do seem to get it right most of the time. While my punts languish in the 1 point cameo class.

opinions appreciated on which of these teams people prefer

    A - Mignolet
    Terry- Coleman- Collins
    Mirallas- Hazard- Walcott- Michu
    Lukaku- Negredo- Sturridge
    subs- Boruc- Barkley- Whittaker- Mcnaughton

    B - Mignolet
    Terry- Clyne- Collins
    Mirallas- Hazard- Walcott- Paulinho
    Lukaku- Dzeko- RVP
    subs- Davis- Barkley- Whittaker- Mcnaughton

Id love to go without van persie but i just think it would be easier to start with him then get rid if things dont go to plan instead of being stuck trying to transfer him in. I always save my wildcard for one last push at the end so that wont be an option either. Any advice on better cheap subs would be helpful

Unless we sign a new CB, he will start with Agger at CB. He's played very well in pre-season and although it was only another pre-season game, he started there in what looked to be the full strength side v Olympiakos the other day. Rodgers was talking him up the other week too and Skrtel hasn't had a place in the side since Carra replaced him around the start of the year.

      And he's 5m 😉

Which 3 strikers will get the most points in the first 10 game-weeks excluding RVP? Price is not taken into consideration.

    Please RMT

    Mignolet - (Boruc)
Collins - Turner - Shaw- (Parr) - (Coleman)
    Hazard - Walcott - Snodgrass - Coutinho - (Thomas)
    RVP - Benteke - Anelka

    I'm all-in on Benteke; he will cost 10.0m by week 6, Michu-style.
I'm open to trading in Boruc for a 4.0m, but i can't see 0.5 getting me much more than more options in defense.

I have him in my current team which will no doubt change before the season starts, but he's a beast and even if he comes on as a sub in both games for the last 30 minutes then he'll notch up a goal or two.
So I'm keeping him for the moment.
Bit punty but just look at the opposition in his DGW.

Who is the best cheap gk to be paired with migs?
    Glad you asked.
Looking at fixtures, migs can basically hold the line by himself between gw1 and gw17 if his understudy can take care of arsenal away (gw10) and tot away (gw16).
If you plan a wc before gw10, and really keen on money, maybe a 4.0 can work.
If you want someone who plays and works best on those two gws, lets look just at them in isolation, by looking at all possible 4.5 relevant gk options:

Boruc - stoke away and newc away - not good.
Speroni - WBA away and Chelsea away - not good
Manone - hull away and whm away - getting better but still away games and not nailed on
Marshall - Swansea home and WBA home - now that's more alike it - not easy teams but also not super strong and both at home. Problem is - its Marshall and his team is not a lock for cs in any game.

The answer is surprising - mcgregor (hull) has sun eland at home and stoke at home - two teams that are not great offensively and not good away from home.
Maybe have brayford and part instead of Chester if it burns to have to hull n the back line, but If you really plan to not deal with keepers for a long time this might be the answer.

Has the Spain squad travelling to Ecuador for a friendly (great timing) been published anywhere yet?
I'm concerned that Cazorla may be rested for Arsenal's first match.
The general opinion is that Mata will be rested for Chelsea's first match so won't Cazorla be rested too?

Lets face it , everyone on heres really fickle , if someone scores , even in a friendly they become included in half the RMTs
This years charity shield is between Man u and Wigan. If Man u thrash Wigan and Van Persie scores ownership will take a dramatic upturn for the start of the season.

If RVP fails to score he will vanish from RMTs quicker than a rabbit at a magic convention.
