KPI Analysis – Lambert and Rodriguez

Over the last few weeks, a combination of factors have elevated Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez into many pre-season Fantasy squads. The Saints’ kind opening run of fixtures has caught the eye, while Rodriguez’s more budget-friendly appeal over Rickie Lambert has also played a part in how we assess his potential across the Fantasy games. Having scored three times in the opening couple of summer friendlies, Rodriguez has been quick to hit form and as interest in the former Burnley man gathers, we use the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to analyse the impact of Mauricio Pochettino on both Rodriguez and Lambert over the previous season.

As mentioned previously, the KPI helps us track certain key statistics which are indicative of a player’s form over a certain Gameweek range or season. Having ran the rule over Robin Van Persie’s impact at United compared to his final year with Arsenal, we delve into last season’s data to look at the Saints duo’s performances from Gameweek 1-22 under Nigel Adkins compared to Gameweek 23-38, when Pochettino was installed as the new man in charge at St Mary’s. By also utilising the Comparison Tool across the two periods, there’s plenty for Fantasy managers to mull over.

Walcott said yesterday that Kosclelny is the best defender in the world. Now whilst I accept this as a wee bit farfetched it does present the question as to whether he may be a better option that Mert ...

    Kos: 8% ownership
    Mert: 26% ownership

Useful differential, or the stats never lie?

I think he's the better option, yes.

Why is it that Koscielny got so little play time compared to Mertesacker last year?
(didn't follow PL much last year, so worried that he might not play every game...)

Is Van Persie worth his 14m price?

I have taken the strikers from the top 6 teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man United & Tottenham) to look at their stats for last season.

I have taken the points each player scored over last year, divided it by the minutes played and then multiplied it by 90 to give points scored per 90 minutes (I know this isn't 100% accurate but give a good estimate).

Below is the results in order of points per 90:

    1) Hernandez - 8.69
    2) Van Persie - 7.55
    3) Lukaku - 7.14
    4) Sturridge - 7.11
    5) Podolski - 6.66
    6) Suarez - 6.46
    7) Dzeko - 6.42
    8) Rooney - 6.39
    9) Aguero - 5.60
    10) Ba - 5.44
    11) Giroud - 4.67
    12) Torres - 4.65
    13) Defoe - 4.63
    14) Adebayor - 4.06
    15) Welbeck - 3.94

This year I have decided to employ a kind of "Moneyball" tactic. I believe there are some bargins to be had if you compare this points per 90 to their cost. So I took the points per 90 and divided it by their cost to give a kind of value (points returned per 90 for each million spent if you will):

    1) Hernandez - 1.158
    2) Lukaku - 0.892
    3) Dzeko - 0.856
    4) Sturridge - 0.789
    5) Podolski - 0.784
    6) Ba - 0.640
    7) Rooney - 0.609
    8) Suarez - 0.587
    9) Giroud - 0.550
    10) Defoe - 0.545
    11) Van Persie - 0.539
    12) Welbeck - 0.526
    13) Torres - 0.517
    14) Aguero - 0.509
    15) Adebayor - 0.507

As you can see Hernandez could end up being a real steal, he won't be in my team from the off but I will be keeping an eye on his game time.

As for Van Persie his 14m is far too high for me, the only time where I could see him being worth this price is if you were to captain him every week which would go some way to mitigate the cost and push his Value up to 1.079 in the 2nd list above.

The problem is, in that second list, how many above RVP are nailed on to start the first game?

I'd argue perhaps only Giroud and Sturridge (if fit).

It's a bit flawed logic really, but I guess you know that. It still means zilch if these players aren't getting game time. a striker who plays but scores no goals in 10 matches will still earn more points than someone who plays 2 matches and scores in both.

Unless of course, they've come to prominence or moved to a different club to get more game time, such as Sturridge. As for Hernandez, it's doubtful he'll get more time than usual.

Is Coleman, Toure, Collins, Mertesacker (Chester) a too expensive defence? What changes would people make?

I personally would downgrade Toure to a 4.0m defender that rotates well with Chester. Get that extra 1mp and use it in attack. Or downgrade Collins to a 4m defender and use the extra 0.5
