Season Predictions 2013/14 – The View From The Scouts

We wanted to post this before deadline this morning but, due to our technical issues, we were unable to take that opportunity. Rather than waste the chance to embarrass ourselves, however, we thought we’d stick these up this evening, regardless.

Last season many of us were left red-faced thanks to our terrible predictions for the 2012/13 season.

I was left particularly embarrassed with my now laughable assertion that Charles N’Zogbia would be last season’s best differential. Meanwhile Granville’s predictions that Sam Alladyce would be the first boss to bite the bullet and Shinji Kagawa would be the season’s top assister also failed to materialise.

Credit though went to Anorak for correctly predicting that Michu would be the year’s star budget midfielder. Hard to believe the attacking midfielder was initially priced at just 6.5m at the start of last season. Mark’s prediction that Rickie Lambert would shine in the budget forward category also proved correct.

But enough of last year, here’s our thoughts on the season ahead for you to bookmark and use to embarrass/congratulate us as the season progresses.

Moderator Evs knows all about Top 5s, he was a top 5 player at the end the FPL 2012/13 season and was even in with a shout of winning the competition on the final day. Will his experience reap dividends when it comes to predicting the 2013/14 season?

My wife beat me today by 25 points (55 to 30). I spent nearly 2 months getting my team sorted, going through many, many drafts, and she whacks her team out in 2 and a half minutes this morning. Then, to rub salt in the wound, she laughs at me and calls me 'a rookie' 'cos I asked if I could watch match of the day on our anniversary night.

To be fair, I should think myself lucky that a) she plays tag game and b) she's still talking to me after that little fopaux.

What are you on about, mate?

There are 15 people in a game before the season starts

I have a GW rank of 9 in the league, how are the 4 people to join the game after the deadline gonna affect your overall rank ?

But he's got two much more challenging fixtures ahead of him. We'll see how he does.

Must say feeling pretty happy with my Redmond punt, everyone told me to ditch him and even though he only scored two points today very happy to have him in my squad. Reckon the points will come with easier fixtures, and by all accounts he had a good game today, plus Hughton said that he was not the one who benefited from Snodgrass's absence so his place seem pretty good. Sometimes it is good to go with gut rather than listen to the masses 🙂

imo there are too many good options at forward to use one on Welbeck. Big questions on regular starts, and he's not going to get 2 like today very often. Lambert I would think would be a better option for that price (nailed on, on pens, etc.) and there are many options that are close in price

    Evening deadzone.

I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the differences in what bonus point scores would have been on the old system and write some general notes about what the new system will mean.

Mixed feelings for me personally. Some look better, some look worse - though in general I think the new system is better. And A number of them are actually fairly similar.

Note that since the average '3BP winning' BPS score is considerably lower this season (For example Benteke had a BPS of 14 and an ESP of 51), there will be more ties this season, and therefore more bonus points awarded out on average per game. Apart from the United game, all 6 of the other games ended with a tie for bonus points. In todays 7 games 49 bonus points were awarded, it would have been 45 on the old system.

It's hard to get much else out of it, other than in general defenders who don't score/assist get rewarded more. On the other hand, defenders scoring are no longer nailed on for bonus points (see Luna).

Another big difference is the 3BP that Mignolet got. Under the old system he would've finished joint 10th out of all the players in that game.

I took these values simply from Detailed Stats on the FPL page and I did it manually so I might have made a mistake!

    -----------

    Liverpool vs Stoke
    Mignolet 3
    Johnson 2
    Aspas 2

    Old system:
    Sturridge 3
    Henderson 2
    Gerrard 1

    -----------

    Arsenal vs Aston Villa
    Benteke 3
    Giroud 2
    Szczesny 1
    Clark 1

    Old system:
    Benteke 3
    Luna 2
    Westwood 1

    -----------

    Norwich vs Everton
    Coleman 3
    Barkley 3
    Whittaker 1

    Old system:
    Coleman 3
    Barkley 2
    Whittaker 2

    -----------

    Sunderland vs Fulham
    Hangeland 3
    Hughes 2
    Kasami 2

    Old system:
    Kasami 3
    Duff 2
    Sidwell 1
    Taarabt 1

    -----------

    West Brom vs Southampton
    Shaw 3
    Lovren 3
    Lambert 1

    Old system:
Ward-Prowse 3 (? - This value might be broken, he's listed as 94 minutes played and has an enormous ESP)
    Lambert 2
    Shaw 1

    -----------

    West Ham vs Cardiff City
    Cole 3
    Nolan 3
    Reid 1
    O'Brien 1

    Old system:
    Cole 3
    Nolan 2
    Connolly 1 (?)

    -----------

    Swansea vs Man Utd
    Welbeck 3
    Van Persie 2
    Rooney 1

    Old system:
    Welbeck 3
    Van Persie 3
    Evra 1

They should copy the MLS fantasy game format.

      Each player can get a maximum of 6 bonus points, 3 for attacking, 3 for defending;

      Attacking Bonus

Players will score extra points for positive play:

1 point for every 3 crosses (A cross is defined where the ball is played to their own player in the penalty area)
1 point for every 3 key passes (A key pass is one that leads to a shot at goal)
1 point for every big chance created (A big chance is one where the analyst determines the player should score)
-1 point for every big chance missed
      Defending Bonus

Players will also score extra points for good defending:

1 point for every 6 clearances, blocks or interceptions
1 point for every 6 recovered balls
-1 point for every error leading to a goal

It's brilliant. really dynamic, and good players in real life get the points their play deserves.

      American's win this round.
