Monitor – Philippe Coutinho

Heading into the home game against Stoke, Philippe Coutinho was one of the most popular picks around. Second only to Eden Hazard in terms of midfield ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Liverpool winger was heavily backed to run riot against the Potters after a thrilling first few months on Merseyside last time round.

Unfortunately for his Fantasy owners, Coutinho returned a blank while Iago Aspas and Daniel Sturridge picked up the points after combining for the Reds’ match-winner. As we edge ever-closer to the weekend’s fixtures, we take a look back at the Brazilian’s display against Mark Hughes’ side and assess the underlying data in our first Monitor article of the new season.

I've just heard an interesting rumour on the Spurs grapevine (Jewish connections), that Willian and Lemela are done deals, but the money has nothing to do with any deal for Bale. Apparently there is nothing on Bale and he's staying.

I wonder if Joe Lewis is really going for it then.

    Yeah. I think people have been assuming that the money they're spending is to do with the Bale deal, but I've never viewed it like that. I don't think it works like that. If you're going to go for it, this season is as good a time as any. Great manager in charge, good team already in place, the other top teams with new managers and Wenger losing the 'king plot with Arsenal.

  I don't think Lamela is happening, the quote from his agent was that they're still in Rome and the general news reports one reads it seems like one of the classic "rumours". I suppose if Willian comes in and Bale somehow stays for just one season it'll be one heck of a season

Popular options in the 8-10million catagory:

Soldado
Pros - nailed on starter and should benefit from service from an improved spurs midfield. On pens and has a good run of fixtures.
Cons - Bale not confirmed as left, if Bale stays it could cost Soldado points.

Benteke
Pros - Nailed on started and on pens. Has show he can score against anyone and is not playing in Europe.
Cons - Even though Villa beat Arsenal they are not expected to show that kind of a resolve. Benteke being the strongest play is beneficial from a FF perspective but it will lead to blanks during tough fixtures.

Sturridge
Pros - Getting good service at Liverpool and in a strong position to get good returns. Nailed on while Suarez is out and should get good game time when Suarez is back as they were a very strong pairing at the end of last year.
Cons - Liverpool didn't show they have what it takes to break into the top 5 in their first game of the year.

Bony
Pros - Shown he can score in the PL and will benefit from good service at Swansea. Linking up with Michu will make a very strong pairing. Has a good & long run of fixtures coming up
Cons - Not nailed on yet (this should change when he is match sharp)

Michu
Pros - Nailed on a proven FF asset. OOP when Bony is not on the field. Has a good & long run of fixtures coming up.
Cons - Swansea may be reliant on his goal scoring abilities and with more matches for the Swans this year he may get rested or suffer from fatigue.

Silva
Pros - Playing for a team that are expected to finish in the top 3. Expected to be nailed on and a play maker in midfield. Many will be hoping for the steady reaturns owners saw in 2011-2012. Good fixtures.
Cons - there could be rotation and a better city player could come to the fore.

Coutinho
Pros - Nailed on and a proven asset. Good fixtures and high expectations, as highlighted by BR, if he plays up the middle.
Cons - Could be better options from a FF perspective in the Liverpool team and could see less points if stuck in a wide role.

What do you think folks, these are some of my thoughts while trying to organise my medium term plans. Agree or disagree & are the better options?

Oxlade-Chamberlain is apparently out for 3-6 months with ankle injury. Rosicky at 5.5M looks safe with Arteta and Diaby both out injured.

Anyone agree that Rosicky could be great value?

  Its an interesting option but he's regularly on the treatment table as well. Just looked at his stats, 15 goals in 129 games for Arsenal is a goal every 8.6 games. Not enough.

  Yor GW 3 will be around 25-30 points and you have now enough points + points tonight.
  Average GW 1 + GW3 wil be 100 points.
  100 :2= 50 average and it is very good, so dont worry.
  This game is not chasing the points, this game is about collecting points.
  Belive me i have 6 season so far behind me 🙂

Benteke is likely to rise once or twice before the end of week 2, especially if he delivers tonight.

The problem, however, is that he obviously won't have a game next week. Now, he will be in my team for GW 4 no matter what.

But you really don't wanna pay 9.2 or 9.3 for a striker who you initially bought in for 9m and i know is gonna deliver the goods, right?

So what would you do? bench him this week ( and play 4-4-2) or swallow the loss of value( if you want him back) and take a punt in week 3?

Answering this question might help those that will face this issue and there will be plenty of them...

  It happened in the preseason, despite Mourinho saying it wouldn't, and with Luiz out and Cahil and Terry needed rest, this is the time for it to happen if ever. I see Ivanovic starting on the bench and subbing in, maybe in the center maybe at right back.
