The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Question you really need to ask yourself is this: do you think Silva will make up the points that the hit will take vs Hazard i.e. will Silva score 4+ whatever Hazard scores. Possible but risky, since Hazard might still deliver vs Man u.

Watched the match, Soldado looked classy, Chadli wanted to shoot every time he got the ball so he didn't get much from the left, and Lennon was..... Lennon.
Soldado appears to like to sit on the last defender and make darting runs in behind as opposed to a hold the ball up forward. Start of the 2nd half he came and got a little of his own ball and linked up well with the midfield.
Palace played compact and deep with Jedinak often joining the last line to make it five at the back.

I would suggest that against Swansea (who like to actually play football) Soldado will have a lot more opportunities and will convert given his reputation as a world class finisher.

A question for people informed on the price changes.

    I understand the basics.

Was it not the case before that the threshold for transfers in for a 2nd rise in a week rose?

    For example Benteke.

38,500 in for a .1 rise and then 67,000 for the next .1 rise.

Or i have made that up?

I remember reading that on the ctc explanation page, but I don't think that the threshold for the second rise is any different than the first rise. Looking at the ctc site, barkley's and coleman's rise theshold is no different than anyone else's.
What is maybe different is that the number of rises in a week ks capped at 3.

Now we have all sorted out what to do with Lukku the next question has to be what to do with the Chelsea defender

Very tempting to do a -4 to swap Ivanovich out for Zabaletta

    My own scenario is

    gw2 Chester H Norwich
    GW3 Turner Cardiff H Everton

    OR

    Buy Zabalett -4

    GW2 A Cardiff
    GW3 H Everton

Does Zabaletta -4 outscore the other option? I think it might do , also has the added advantage of adding depth to the team , as if anyone is injured or dosent play GW3 i would be forced to play Chestr away to Man c

    HEAD-TO-HEAD ADVICE

I have already used my FT for this week, am facing opponent who scored 47 pts in GWK1. Somewhat new to FPL so would love some feedback

    Boruc (Jaaskelalnen)
    Mertesacker Coleman Pieters (Chester Ramage)
    Hazard Walcott Mirallas Gerrad (Snodgrass)
    Benteke Dzeko Altidore

    A) Mertesacker -> K. Toure (-4 hit)

    B) Hazard -> Silva (-4 hit)

    C) Stay put

1.Long term Jaask is too expensive. If Collins holds his place at 4.5 is nice way into WH fixtures.
2.Pieters is Stoke? Ok to be abit diffeerent but for Pieters and Jaask you could have Collins and Mingolet and .5 left
      3Watch for Dzeko rotation soon
4Altidore is punt but hey its fun to have 1 and could do you well

What are non Benteke owners doing/thinking about his potential rise going into the weekend & his blank?

    - I'm thinking it would be crazy to get him in now, might as well wait until after the blank to decide on whether to go for him. I have Sturridge right now and zero in the bank, if Benteke rises and does not come back down to 9.0, I cannot get him, unless Sturridge rises 0.2. (Benteke haunts my dreams nowadays )

I think the DGW is messing with the psychology of my thinking. It feels like he has scored much more often than Sturridge, (but that is because of the DGW) although Sturridge scored 1 in open play in 1 game, while Benteke scored 1 in open play in games and 2 on pens. Thanks for introducing me to logic.

Well, as a Benteke owner who was planning to transfer him out for GW3, I have decided that his impending price rise is worth me benching him for GW3 instead.

It's kind of funny, actually. Benteke has a blank, but everybody is so concerned with his price rise that they are transferring him in anyway, further adding to his price rising potential.

At least in my situation where I already own Benteke, using two transfers to swap him out and in doesn't seem logical.

Transferring him in is most likely a different story, though.

My original plan was to consider him after the first 3 GWs. I will still consider him after the first 3 GWs at a higher price, but I will not compromise my team to save a bit. If he's too expensive, I can go without. Who knows what things will look like in 2 weeks?

I have left a bit of coin in the bank to change Altidore into Benteke after the blank. I can't cover a rise though (2mil in the bank), so will have to think carefully about next weeks transfer(s).

I changed my plan to bring in Soldado over a couple of gws and brought in Benteke before the price rise at a cost of -8.

Reasons being I now have my team reshaped, did well enough in gw1 to cope with the hits and Tekkers will rocket even with the blank, I think a lot of casuals won't even look 2 weeks ahead.

If I hadn't done it and he didn't come back down I wouldn't have been able to afford.

A big driver for going early was getting Zab instead of either Lescott or Nasty. Nasty and I have risk he won't play, and Lescott I would probably need to transfer him to Nasty at a later date.

Took the hits and I'm all set until the Next Thing Happens.

His impending rotation was the reason not to have him for the DGW, but he wasn't rotated...

He's probably good value, but plays rather deep for my liking. Still ends up getting the job done most days, though.

Tough call, but I only go for the sure thing, which Lamps is not.

I'm not sure about it either. But with excellent options up top for those willing to spend big (RVP, Aguero, Soldado, Sturridge, Giroud, Bony) and a few extra bonus points for defenders this year, I think I'm likely to give it a go.

Anyone think that the Villa defence actually looked pretty good yesterday?

Barring an OG and a set-piece. They seemed very difficult to break down. Westwood-KEA-Delph were guarding the defence very very well I thought by making everything congested in the final third for Chelsea.

Makes me a little wary on Sturridge's chances this weekend. Thoughts?

very much agree. Both Chelsea & Arsenal struggled to establish dangerous build-up play through the midfield, and I thought Lowton and Vlaar really shutdown attacks from the wing and top of the box. I think the fact that 3 villa starting defenders are 4.5 will be a real bargain at some point.

I don't think it will be an easy game at all for Liverpool. Villa look tough. Especially because Liverpool, like Arse & Chelsea, don't really prioritize width --- makes it easy for DF to pinch in and disrupt the passing (which villa did well)

I think Villa are a good team, and they gained a lot of confidence towards the end of last season.
They are a very young team, and last season were lacking a leader, but now it seams they have found it in Benteke. What I liked, was their aggression, and they looked very organized and tactically very good.
Also, they are a very fit and pacey team, and a lot of the top teams will have problems against them.

The way I see it, you've really dug yourself in a hole.

Your transfer out targets are: Kompany, Cole, Hazard, and Benteke.
Your bench fodder are Gayle, Ward, and Turner.

This leaves you with the following "playable" footballers:

      Migs
      Dawson
      Walcott, Nolan, Mirallas, Coutinho
      Dzeko

For a total of 7 out of 11.

With next week's free transfer, you can bring this number up to 8.

      Not looking good, mate.

Seems like quite a few people are doing Ivan > Zab for -4. was thinking about waiting a week since I used my FT already and would like to avoid the hit. Thoughts?

id avoid the hit. ivanovic has scoring potentiol. scored in the last game, and in the first game he came so close. you never know he could against united. and - 4 for a defender who will only probably get 6 points doesnt seem worth it at all to me. unless the defender scored or assisted or something but most likely wont.

Good team. A bit weak in defense and subs are bad, but looks fine for now.
