Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 1 – Wednesday

It was a tale of two Belgian forwards last night as Chelsea edged out Villa at the Bridge. Christian Benteke notched his third goal of Gameweek 1, while compatriot Romelu Lukaku was benched once again as Jose Mourinho opted for Demba Ba up front. Frank Lampard and Oscar proved decent midfield differentials to Eden Hazard, in spite of the latter’s somewhat contentious assist award for Chelsea’s opener.

Benteke Is Untoppable
In retrospect, many will argue he was an obvious choice for our three-man frontlines. Despite the tricky away trips to Arsenal and Chelsea, there was never any doubt Christian Benteke would be afforded starts in each of Villa’s matches – the same could hardly be said for the Blues’ attacking options. Having finished the previous season with 14 goals in his last 17 appearances, Benteke warmed up for the 2013/14 campaign by firing seven strikes over five matches in the summer; a deadly double against Arsenal on Saturday was followed by yet another goal last night as he maintained an outstanding scoring record that has many Fantasy managers frantically scrambling to acquire his services. Up next, a home game against Liverpool will hardly deter Benteke after he bullied Brendan Rodgers’ backline into submission last time around, and despite the blank Gameweek 3 just around the corner, the tide of investment is picking up speed, with a price rise in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looking imminent.

Lukaku On Bench Duties Again
Surely, we thought, he’d be guaranteed a start against Villa last night. Having been dropped to the bench for the weekend clash against Hull, Romelu Lukaku was hotly-tipped to return to the first XI as the midlanders rolled up to the Bridge. Having scored five goals across the summer, the Belgian was by far Chelsea’s in-form player yet he seems to be unable to convince Jose Mourinho of his worth, with Demba Ba surprisingly getting the nod this time around. With the Chelsea boss still in hot pursuit of Wayne Rooney, Lukaku’s game time is clearly under huge threat, just a couple of fixtures into the season. Certainly, a trip to United and blank Gameweek 3 makes the decision to sell a relatively straightforward one but, given his barnstorming displays for West Brom last term, it’s somewhat disappointing that we could be deprived of the Belgian as a legitimate Fantasy option.

After the game, Mourinho discussed the situation up front and also gave Juan Mata’s Fantasy owners a heads-up by admitting the Spaniard is not yet fit enough to last an entire match, after only just recovering from a minor thigh problem:

“Sometimes you can have two strikers on the bench but this game I needed a different balance on the bench because I may have to play Azpilicueta because he is very fast, maybe I need Mikel’s experience, I needed options in wingers and I know Mata cannot play for 90 minutes at this moment. I try to give my three strikers time on the pitch and this time Fernando stayed out but Lukaku can say he is the only one that hasn’t started a game.”

Ivanovic Repays the Faith
The Serbian entered the Gameweek as the most popular defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with over 28% of managers snapping him up ahead of the double. Ivanovic served notice of his attacking potential in Sunday’s clash against Hull, registering three efforts on goal from inside the box – while he drew a weekend blank, the Chelsea right-back more than atoned last night by heading home the match-winner to break Villa’s resolve. His aerial ability already looks key to the Blues’ set-pieces and corners over the season and could easily see him replicate last term’s five-goal haul – many owners will even be considering handing him a starting role at Old Trafford on Monday evening, given the attacking threat on show so far.

Villa’s Able Supporting Cast
As mentioned in our Villa Scouting the Doubles piece, Gabby Agbonlahor had finished the previous season strongly – six goals and three assists over his final nine appearances, yet Benteke’s endeavours ensured he received little attention heading into the pair of fixtures. Less than 2% of FPL managers took a punt on the 7.0 priced forward but, with an assist in each of the trips to Arsenal and Chelsea, he is clearly thriving on the left of Paul Lambert’s front three: his pace on the flank looks vital to Villa’s counter-attacking style away from home. With Andreas Weimann chipping in with an assist over the two games and missing numerous opportunities to score, it’s apparent that Benteke won’t be the only Villa frontline option picking up points over the campaign.

Blues Midfield Options
Ahead of the double, Eden Hazard was head and shoulders above any option in our Captain Poll but the Belgian struggled to repay the show of faith and stumbled to an eight-point haul. Hazard’s initial shot was saved by Brad Guzan but rebounded off Antonio Luna into the Villa net to earn him a dubious, and somewhat belated, assist, though he still found himself behind Frank Lampard and Oscar, who both registered 13 points apiece. While Mourinho rolled out the same back-four and keeper in each of the two matches, further up the field there are real rotation issues for Fantasy managers. The Blues boss gave eight midfielders game time over Gameweek 1; a clear indication of the problems we may have as the season unfolds as the Chelsea manager attempts to keep all of his squad involved ahead of next year’s World Cup.

In Other News
Arsenal’s injury worries eased for the trip to Fenerbahce last night after Kieran Gibbs and Bacary Sagna recovered from the problems that forced them both off against Villa at the weekend. Tomas Rosicky also shrugged off a knock to start in Turkey as the Gunners registered a superb 3-0 away win in the first-leg of their Champions League play-off match. Gibbs, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud grabbed the goals for the visitors, while Theo Walcott provided a pair of assists – intriguingly, Giroud seems to be on spot-kick duties in the absence of Mikel Arteta, after he slotted home the third following a foul on Walcott in the box. Laurent Koscielny was subbed off with a cut eye after receiving a kick to the face but is suspended for the weekend trip to Fulham; Sagna is expected to move to centre-half, with Carl Jenkinson covering at right-back.

Post-match, Arsene Wenger had plenty to say. The Gunners boss conceded his side now have “no chance” of signing Luis Suarez and also gave an update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s knee injury, admitting the youngster is out for “six to 12 weeks”. Wenger also revealed Koscielny’s head wound could be potentially worrying:

“Laurent Kosielny’s [injury] has opened very deeply the skull and we had to take him to hospital. I was not happy with the kick because I feel always that you can ease a bit off. Only the player in the end will know what he did. We are concerned because we had to send him to hospital to see if he has not broken a bone. We are waiting for him to come back now. We are waiting for information to find out if he can fly home with us.”

Jan Vertonghen and Aaron Lennon have both been omitted from the Tottenham squad which faces Dinamo Tblisi in the Europa League play-off first-leg game this evening. Fantasy owners will be relieved, however, after Andre Villas-Boas revealed their absence is merely precautionary, with both set to be available for Sunday’s home showdown against Swansea:

“With Jan, bearing in mind his injury in Asia, we decided to leave him out to have a full recovery and treatment on the ankle. We’ve decided it would be difficult for him to complete both matches, Dinamo Tbilisi on Thursday and Swansea on Sunday. Aaron Lennon has been complaining of pain in his foot. He was okay for the game against Palace and will be okay for the game against Swansea. It’s one of those situations where rest is vital for the recovery.”

Swansea also have a couple of concerns ahead of their own Europa League game tonight. Nathan Dyer has been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained towards the end of Saturday’s home defeat by United, while Jonathan de Guzman may miss out once again as he recovers from the head wound picked up during training for Holland last week. Michael Laudrup has admitted question marks still hang over the Dutchman’s availability, though the midfielder is optimistic he will be ready for the weekend trip to Spurs if he fails to make it in time for tonight’s showdown.

Did Lukaku > Osvaldo before price changes.
Soton record signing and he had a good record when he last played for Pochetino in la liga. I think he will be their main man. Hope that extra .5m paid over Lambert has landed me the next bandwagon.

    Now i have 1m left,
Should i do Ramires > Mirallas for -4 pts?

If Sturridge was any better than shooting off target & being dispossessed in an attempt to dribble past defenders, Coutinho would have been much better FPL player by now.

Ivanovic to Zabaleta for a 4 point hit, from a rookie fantasy managers perspective.

First off, I will say that I only have one full years of experience behind me, so forgive me for anything that turns out to be false, this is just a matter of the points I have seen made so far, with a few of my personal choices placed in. If anyone can think of any reasons I have missed out on for choosing one or the other, let me know!

    Reasons to transfer him out:

Those that started with Ivanovic (like myself) primarily chose him for the double game week, in anticipation of clean sheets or goals. In this instance we have both. Now that is over, the prospect of Man United away, and a blank, along with an inconsistent (in my opinion) fixture schedule, dent my feelings on keeping him.

Mourinho annoyed many a fantasy manager (myself included) by keeping Lukaku on the bench, and as the season progresses, looks to do similar with the entirety of this squad, including midfield and the D unit. With Azpilacueta gaining fitness, Ivanovic may move centrally, where there is yet more competition for places, and with a silly amount of games to play, rest and rotation look likely.

Fantasy football managers that play casually will see the blank coming up, and transfer Chelsea and Villa players out en masse (perhaps not those in form, such as Benteke, and ironically, Ivanovic, or players that garnered large amounts of points like Hazard and Mata last season). At this point, every .1 million is needed.

An argument that has been rolling around in my mind is that because of Ivanovic's 15 point haul compared to Zabalata's 10, a 4 point hit would technically leave you 1 point ahead of those that went for Zab over Ivanovic. A reason for my lack of success last year is thinking taking hits on players were the way forward - I probably squandered a week or two's worth of points thinking I could predict the game, but whilst point hits are frowned upon in my mind I am still 1 point ahead of those that chose Zabaleta.

    Reasons to keep Ivanovic:

The ability to play both at RB and CB increases his odds of playing, making him a much safer bet then, say, John Terry.

His eye for goal is obvious - this time last year he had struck twice and was the week’s top scorer.

Chelsea are a top club, so clean sheets are highly likely - travel sick Fulham arrive at the bridge in week 5, as do Cardiff in week 8. Long term, after week 9 (Man City at home) the schedule clears up, with Chelsea facing 6 weeks of favourable fixtures.

Whether this is true or not I am not sure, but talk around many websites is that Mourinho likes to get a comfortable lead (2 goals ahead) and then batten down the hatches and aim to control the rest of the game, making clean sheets from winning positions a real chance - again, I am not sure of the accuracy of this statement!

    Reasons to transfer Zabaleta in:

The fixtures are almost too good to miss. Cardiff, Hull and Stoke the immediate 3, with a home game against United after, and a schedule that gives good prospects for returns. It is worth noting that the last Manchester derby saw Zabaleta acquire bonus points (not entirely sure why, I watched the game, but I was not complaining, as it helped me beat a friend that week!) so he can still deliver even when the clean sheet has gone.

Rotation is a massive problem for City, with ample choice of forwards and midfielders. Defensively, whilst there are already problems, Micah Richards appears to be out for the foreseeable future, with rumours of a loan deal also in circulation, which should allow Zabaleta to once again establish himself at the back.

Already owned by nearly a quarter of all players, investment looks likely after his last match, and acquiring him before his price increases looks like a solid option.

During the match, it was noticeable how him and Navas worked together. At first Navas did not seem to get the hang of it, but eventually they were both making runs of each other very effectively, and this can only get better over time. Zabaleta made it into Newcastle's box multiple times, so I predict City's right hand side to be deadly over the coming season.

    Reasons to avoid Zabaleta

Not much of a differential, and the age old worry of 'chasing last week’s points' always spring to mind

With Nastasic still out, Kompany with a groin injury and Joe Hart hardly at his best, clean sheets (the bread and butter of defenders points) may be less of a guarantee then before. Pellegrini plays a very high pressing game, which whilst works by putting pressure on the opposition, may see them caught out once again (circa 3-1 defeat to Arsenal)

Lovers of a cheap defender are not going to want him - 6 million is 1 million more than most recommend to spend on a defender.

So there are my two cents - I hope this helps someone justify their choice of Ivanovic or Zabaleta!

    Feedback greatly appreciated.

In Long term,Ivanovic will score more attacking points than Zabaleta.
In Long term, Defensive points of Zab & Branna will be more or less same.

Chelsea are as formidable as City if not better at the back.

This snobbery against casuals on FFS is hilarious. How is doing what you're suggesting different to the "bandwagon the hell out of the players that did well last week"?

FWIW, i agree with your price rise point. I just don't like the inference that we're collectively transferring in a player for any other reason than budget building.

The term is used every season, nothing personal. There are a vast majority of people who affect the prices and game week average who don't spend every waking minute fretting over their team and it's just an expression to describe them. The weirdos 😀

There's no snobbery intended at all. I think people playing the game casually will not be looking ahead as much as we do and will react to last week's scores more dramatically than people who spend more time on the game do.

The transfers I have made are for the long term. I think riding waves just because they are waves is fruitless.

I think this was to me, so I'll give it a go answering! Currently with my plans (albeit these scupper every week) is to transfer out Hazard for Navas or Silva, and the Wolf for Benteke. Any deviation in prices between any of those players and my plans go to pot.
The casual gamer reference was something that many people do, my friends included, see who does well/doesn't and transfer them accordingly, affecting those that take a little bit more time ti think about these things.
Nothing personal against them, but obviously 2.5 million people cannot be the same!

Quick bit of advice needed from anyone who understands the captain rules on the Sky game…

Started with Ivan Captain, Made no captain changes during GW1 so got 2 games out of him as captain (which was ok)

Now realise if i'd done RVP then changed to Ivan on Sunday Morning id be better off now (im assuming the captain change doesnt roll over to the next GW).

When does your captain change get restored if you have used it??? after the final game of the gameweek (basically have I blown a free captain change?)

On the Sky Sports Game (fenners and Mers and all that).

You can do transfers and capt changes mid gameweek, hence, the leader already has over 200pts.

As I understand it (potentially) if you had walcott as capt now, you could transfer him out for Silva on saturday night then use a captain change to RVP on monday morning (net result 1 cpt change, 1 transfer = 3 captains for the Gameweek!)

No, I read on FISO someone phoned them pre-season and was told selling a captain means you must use your 1 captain change that week to move it to another player before you sell.

Also you only had 2 captains guaranteed for GW 1, whoever your captain is left on now is your first captain next GW (they run Saturday to Friday). So most people that changed this GW will have a Chelsea captain, who play last so either they stay with that or change to another player, who is then their first captain for GW 3

So if I have just changed it from Ivan to Walcott (which I have) then my captain fro GW2 is......? presumably Walcott?? but I wont have a captain change or be able to transfer him...correct?

Just posted a note on the latest page, but for you it means on Sat you will have a change left, so after Arsenal play you can change it to A Sun player like Man City, who play on Sat in GW 3, then use your GW 3 change to pick from a team on Sun who play Sat for GW 4 etc.

0.1 or 0.2m loss isn't a great deal in the grand scheme of things, but he also misses GW3 so either you keep him for the season (and so his price doesn't matter), or you ride out possibly a 0.5m drop by GW4?

I do think he'll start and score or assist against Man Utd, btw.

Everyone is just trying to build up team value so that they can have more expensive players in their teams later on in the season. Now to January WC is the ideal time to make as much money as you can in a responsible way and then make tranfers purely based on points

What do you all think of this front 7 for GW2?

    Hazard / Miralas / Coutinho / Walcott
    Aguero (c) / Dzeko (vc) / Soldado

    Escape plan is provisionally:

Hazard > Silva (or possibly 7.5 or less MF) for GW3.
Aguero > Benteke (or possibly Dzeko > Benteke if I find a good enough 7.5 MF for the GW3 transfer) for GW4.

Any tips on who might be a decent choice for Hazard > 7.5 ready for GW3? Eyes on Arfa, Snodgrass and Sess atm.

So much stronger if you include all the other strengthening you've done this summer.

Might take half/a quarter of a season or so to knit properly, but I can see you easily hitting 4th this year. Maybe even pushing 3rd if you get a bit of luck and some other sides don't.

Squeaky bum time at the top of the table again this year imo. Down to the last couple of game for the title to be clinched.

I quite like that dzeko had a promising but not explosive week as it gives us without him a bit longer to assess if he's going to be a regular starter. If he'd scored half of the chances he had then his price would be rising too fast.

Anyone taken a -8 or more point hit? If so, what did you do, who did you take out and who for in?

I just did a -4 last night before the price changes, and to be honest, it didn't feel fantastic taking out Ivanovic (who did well) and Lukaku (who I feel will start against Man United)

Did them for Shaw (who I got in at 4.5) and Soldado.

Kagawa and Lukaku gamble was embarrassing but still got 81 which isn’t too bad. Need to take -4 hit to get time back to sanity. RMT Please:
    Mignolet (Davis)
Ivanovic Toure Parr Collins Mertesacker (Parr)
    Hazard Walcott Mirallas (KAGAWA,Thomas)
    Giroud Soldado (c) Lambert
    -4 hit for Kagawa to:
    A. Nolan
    B. Valencia
    C. Henderson
    D. Any 8 or less midfielder you think
    E. No Hit

Who do people think Moyes will start behind RvP against Chelsea?

Kagawa, Giggs, Rooney or Welbeck(instead of playing wide)

Definitely not Rooney, as he is likely to join them.

      Welbeck.

Gonna track back and try and stop Ramires trying to break from deep or stopping Frank trying to play those balls out wide

Swansea conceded 12 attempts in their box last Saturday. Soldado had 4 attempts in the box against Palace with 2 on target. Here's the armband Roberto
