Moving Target

Moving Target – Oussama Assaidi

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his options on the flank earlier this week by snapping up Oussama Assaidi from Liverpool on a season-long loan deal. The 25-year-old becomes the third summer arrival since Hughes’ installation at the Britannia, following the acquisition of defenders Erik Pieters and Marc Muniesa – in an interview with the Potters official website, the Moroccan revealed he was much in demand before opting to join up with the Staffordshire outfit:

“I had a number of options available to me but I really feel that this is the best one for me. I am excited about what the season holds for us. I spoke to the manager here, he told me his hopes for the season and how he sees me fitting into the team and he made it a very attractive move for me to be honest. He plays football the right way, the way that I want to play, and it was quite an easy decision for me to make in the end. I came to the game on Saturday and watched the match and I was impressed. I feel I can fit in here well and help the team to progress.”

The History

A product of the AZ Alkmaar youth academy, Assaidi’s career began in the Dutch second-tier with Omniworld back in 2006. Over the course of a couple of seasons, he registered three goals from 36 appearances before making his way to De Graafschap ahead of the 2008/09 season. Assaidi’s first year at the club produced just a couple of goals from 16 appearances but after netting five times in as many games at the start of the following campaign, he was purchased by Heerenveen prior to the closer of the summer transfer window.

The Moroccan took time to settle in his new surrounds, with just one goal and three assists from 20 league games but stepped up significantly the year after. Assaidi racked up nine goals and 13 assists from 31 top-flight matches and followed that up with 10 goals and seven assists over 27 games in 2011/12. Having played a single match for the Dutch club at the start of last season, he was snapped up by Liverpool for a fee of around £2.4m but failed to impress new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers – all four of his league appearances arrived courtesy of the subs bench.

The Prospects

After falling firmly behind the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling for a role on Liverpool’s left, the move to the Britannia certainly looks in the Moroccan’s best interests. Granted, Stoke have no shortage of wide men to provide competition – Matthew Etherington has started both league games thus far, while Michael Kightly and fit-again Brek Shea are also in the mix.

Crucially, though, Assaidi’s speed on the flank may help edge him ahead in Hughes’ thinking as the new man in charge looks to inject a little more urgency to his side’s play out wide. Upon completion of the deal, the Potters boss explained:

“He’s an exciting player, who has great pace and is very direct and will certainly add another dimension to what we already have at the Club.”

Certainly, Etherington’s failure to produce a single goal or assist over the entirety of the previous campaign suggests he’s at risk from the new arrival, with Hughes desperate to add more directness to his attacking options as he attempts to introduce a slicker, more possession-based approach to the Potters’ play. Assaidi’s stats across his last couple of full seasons in Holland certainly highlight his capabilities and, if given a run of regular games, may be one to consider. Already handed a 45-minute debut in last night’s Capital One Cup win over Walsall, his performance was hailed by Hughes, who has already tipped him to be a crowd favourite.

Coming in at just 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.2 in the Sky Sports game, Assaidi could potentially hand Fantasy managers a real budget option for their five-man midfields over the season ahead. At present, though, with more secure options such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham or Hull’s Robbie Brady in the same price bracket, we’ll be happy to keep our distance until Hughes’ intentions for the new boy become apparent. An upcoming run of matches which see the Potters play West Ham and Arsenal away and welcome City to the Britannia will certainly deter any initial suitors, affording us time to assess Assaidi’s impact before contemplating any possible transfer in.

Just another thing to be thrown into the RVP or not RVP debate....SAF was badly bruised by City winning the title on goal diff the season before last and said so at every opportunity... For that reason RVP was a constant pick at United all last season in the prem...Wil Moyes do the same or will he make Europe a bigger priority and "rest" RVP more...he could do...

Lack of transfer activity to me suggests he'll play almost every game. I think he could get taken off late against palace, assuming they're winning of course. Feel confident he'll start.

We all tend to forget that Rooney is no slouch when he plays as a striker, he does have that option just like SAF had last year, but chose not to for most of it.

I don't know, it's tough because Moyes has never had that option - or indeed need - before, really. For some reason I feel like he'll pick a side and just run them into the ground, RVP included.

I'd agree...but it's all an assumption... We have no idea really as to what Moyes will do with such a big squad...His history is with a small squad at a bigish club without CL football...Will he prefer to man manage a smaller core team or try and replicate Fergie who rotated his teams for fun but stuck with the single striker...We assume the latter but we don't know for sure. For all we know he could fall into the Mancini rotation trap.

Moyes has his own agenda. He needs to win the title in his first season to prove the doubters wrong. What message would it send out with moyes resting rvp and united dropping points. He would just be putting pressure on himself.

This early in the season it won't happen. He might get taken off around 80 mins to give him a rest once the cl starts but he won't be benched

Agreed Bemba...I wasn't refering to the next couple of games but in general as the season progresses...I rember several times last year when a lot of people on this site expected RVP to be rested before CL matches, but it never happened...Moyes may have other plans...or maybe not...we don't really know.

very true, I guess it depends on how united are doing. If they are many points clear then yes we may see it (even then I would hesitate to say he would be rested).

I think rvp last season benefitted from playing after all he spent about 6 years resting at arsenal on the treatment bench

Yeah he did...i remember it well. Constant game time in the prem is usaully reserved for a player like Benteke/Berb in teams without CL football and few options...or a CL team who have left themselves short up front in the transfer market/injuries...It was quite unusual last season for a club of Uniteds size and with options to give RVP unending game time...(was he rested just once and only for sixty mins as i recall ?)

Well CL is a new territory for Moyes..he knows how prestigious that competition is so your point is valid he may rest RVP before CL matches because I don't think he would like to get out in the Group Stages he would at least want to reach the Quarters if not win it.

Little help with my captaincy choice needed if you wouldn't mind giving up a minute of your time. This is the way I see it....

    1. Do you think the NLD will continue the recent trend and be high scoring?
    - YES - go to question 2
    - NO - go to question 3

    2. Will Arsenal come out on top in the NLD?
    - YES - pick Walcott
    - NO - pick Soldado

    3. Will Man City bounce back from last weekend and put a few past Hull?
    - YES - go to question 4
    - NO - go to question 5

    4. Do you want to go for the "safe" pick?
    - YES - pick Silva
    - NO - pick Negredo

    5. Will Liverpool beat Man United at home?
    - YES - pick Sturridge
    - NO - go to question 6

    6. Are West Ham more likely to beat Stoke at home than Everton are to beat Cardiff away? (And this one is really scraping the barrel!)
    - YES - pick Nolan
    - NO - pick Mirallas

    Cheers guys!

Apologies but, how does one team "winning" a match affect which player we'll choose to play / captain?

Frankly, don't we prefer to have players from a game we expect to be high scoring?

So it's not a matter of Walcott or Soldado but, Walcott AND Soldado, right?

Further, all things equal we 'typically' prefer the players with a home match too.

That said, win or lose I'm thinking Walcott, Soldado, Silva, Sturrige & Nolan are all excellent choices.

5.5, should play in the hole for the foreseeable future (Ox and Pod out, maybe Wilshere will play there when Arteta returns though).

I know people already have cover in Walcott, but none of the other mids between his price and 7m is tempting me. There's Nolan at 7.2, but that's too much for me atm.

Could be a decent punt but I'd prefer Ramsey if you're going for an Arsenal mid aside from Walcott.

Not too sure if he'll play in the hole, could play on the left (instead of Santi) to help with the attacking potential of Walker or we may even see Gibbs play LM with Monreal at LB. Gibbs put in a decent shift there against Fenerbache.

Hi. No problem. JWP was outstanding against Sunderland. He tends to pick the ball up from Wanyama (our new beast infront of the defence) and distribute it to either Lambert, JRod, Lallana, Gaston, Osvaldo - whomever are the front 3. Last season he got some game time under Adkins but under Poch he has impressed just for the reason you cite. Every player has to put in the workrate to make our team and tactics work - high pressing game, high pace, quick passing from defence, high line etc. I wonder though whether against stronger opposition (weve played WBA and Sunderland so far) he might put Steve Davies or Jack Cork in as a more defensive approach. However, JWP delivery from indirect free kicks into the box was excellent too so it will be hard to drop him.

Sorry for greyness in response but for £4.5m I guess you are never going to be nailed on.

Hv 2 FT & 0m in bank. Need to field a playing XI.
Thinking of Haz (9.4m)-> Wally & Ivanov (6.5m) -> Dawson.
Problem being Dawson plays Arsenal. Any other suggestions ?

Andros Townsend: Who here has him?

I did Lukaku to Aguero (c) and Hazard to AT this week for a hit.

If it doesn't work out, is Ramsey potentially the best £5.5m Midfielder on offer? I'd be tempted with W-Prowse.

2.3m in the bank to do Aspas > Studge/Bentekkers next week.

If you were wildcarding this week, would you keep Coutinho or swap for Silva?

Sturridge is already in the team, but I think I'm picking Silva for this week only. Coutinho has better fixtures coming up and no Champions League...

Basically for me it's close between Coutinho Silva Michu to pair with Walcott (#1 midfielder in my book). Coutinho has better fixtures long-term, Michu has some really juicy ones coming up in not that many GWs. Go with your gut to be honest, it's close. People are writing off Coutinho too early, definitely in the mix with those fixtures and Suarez return just around the corner.

What are people's thoughts about the potentially changing landscape to FPL teams presented by the new bonus point distribution?

Are people considering ditching some of their premium midfielders to get in premium centre backs?

In addition I think the possibility of 3 bonus points for a clean sheet makes captaining defenders a much more viable alternative.

keeping an open mind until we have more data in case it was just a freak few start. Once we start to see an improvement in midfielders points scoring then we'll have a better idea of how defenders are going to get on.

I'm spending a little more money at the back than I originally planned. As you say, clean sheets are now worth a bit more to CBs. But they won't continue at the same rate as they have been so the extra cash needs to go on very strong defensive sides who will actually get regular clean sheets.

    Eto'o scout report lads!

He's a clinical striker with good stats for finishing composure and accuracy. He prefers to place shots but he can be trained to power them in too. His injury resistance is good but his mentality is not very good. He is average at flair and heading.

    He is world class.

He won the champions league with inter and was tearing it up at barca beforehand. He became the highest paid footballer by going to anzhi.

He still tore it up in that league but obviously that was easy.

If he comes back he will be the main man at chelsea.

He is strong and mourinho likes strong players and he is quick not like he was before but he still has quick stats for an old guy.

He will score twenty to thirty goals this season if mourinho plays eden hazard juan mata oscar schurrle lampard all behind him as he will get lots of good quality passes.

He will become the new drogba.

Lamela scores more goals, Eriksen assists more.

I'm a Roma fan, and I can say that Lamela was quality last year. 15 goals and 5 assists from 30 starts. Could be an absolute steal if he comes in at, say, 8.5

Eriksen is a quality quality player. I feel he hasn't developed as much as people were expecting him to, but that's more due to the huge, unrealistic expectations rather than any fault of his own. However, to counter that point, an Ajax fan on here said he had a tendency to go missing in entire games. I watched most of Eriksen's games the last three seasons and I was very impressed, but an Ajax fan who actually attends the games would have a better knowledge of the player and his mentality.

He is a playmaker and attacking midfielder who can play out on the wing too, he's a great passer and has a good shot. Probably the closest Spurs will get to replacing Modric, although Eriksen is more attacking and tends to stay a little further forward - better FPL value than Modric who would rarely score, and often assist the assister.

Lamela on the oether is a great wing-forward who possesses a lot of goal threat, pace, skill and excellent passing. If he's classed as a midfielder and hits form, you're in for a big haul. With OOP and an attacking mindset, he could be FPL gold.

Lukaku Exit Strategies - Post Mortem

Last week I outlined what I saw as the only real viable options to shipping the great other Great Belgian Hope after a shocking DGW to start the season and I thought it would be interesting to revisit those options and see which ones paid off.

To start, there was no 'keep Romo' option which is good since he managed a great big duck in GW2 - likely good news for those that had Chester sitting on the bench waiting to sneak in to your team. The three options I thought were:

    1) Uprgade: with Soldado (7) and Sturridge (8) being the main options, both paid off. Beneteke (2) was also mentioned, but given the blank not recommended.

    2) Go Side-ways: The most appealing options with a shift the Dzeko (8) the most obvious and likely popular choice. Bony (1), Aspas (1) and RVW (2) would have disappointed new owners as would those jumping to Welbeck (2) and Lambert (2). Giroud (8) on the other hand did quite well.

    3) Down-grade: For those going this direction, there was a real mixed bag. Anekla (0) at the time was threatening retirement and has also seen a price drop. Chamakh (9) was the surprise of the round and Bent (6) also snuck in a good return unexpectedly.

So what does it all mean? If you would have asked me to pick the best replacement in terms of points for GW2, not sure Chamakh would have been on the top of my list, but this is the fun of this game. Bad decisions can turn out very well.

Which switch did you make? I had Dzeko so went for Soldado, which worked out okay. I still didn't think Bobby Soldier looked very good for Totts and when the wild card comes in a few weeks time shifting him out is likely the plan. A shuffle to Sturridge and Coutihno to an attacking Totts mid (Lamela? Paulino?) is likely the plan. I also like Dzeko to Bent potentiall once rotation sets back in and Dzeko is nailed to the bench in 3 weeks time.

Pelegrini might surprise a few folks this week with a new looks squad to combat Hull parking the bus this weekend.

I can see a 4-2-2-2 with Dzeko and Negredo playing up top and Silva/Navas playing the wings with balls into the box. They would then grind out a couple goals to open it up.
