Scout Report – Marko Arnautovic

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his attacking options on deadline-day with the acquisition of Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen. The 24-year-old arrives at the Britannia on a four-year contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5m and is one of five new faces at the club this summer along with Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Oussama Assaidi and Stephen Ireland.

Speaking to the Potters official website upon completion of the deal, Hughes admitted he’s been keeping an eye on the Austrian international for some time:

“Marko is a player we have been aware of for some time and I’m really pleased we have been able to add him to our squad. He has played at the highest level in Holland, Italy and Germany and is keen to make his mark in England with Stoke City.”

The History

A somewhat temperamental character, Arnautovic switched clubs five times during his youth career before finally settling with Dutch outfit FC Twente. After racking up the goals for the club’s youth team (22 goals in 24 games) and reserves (27 goals in 32 games) the Austrian made his senior debut towards the end of the 2006/07 season. The following year produced just a couple of assists from 14 league appearances before Arnautovic stepped up another level – 12 goals and six assists from 28 matches persuaded Italian outfit Inter to snap him up on a one-year loan deal.

Arnautovic’s time in Serie A was far from successful, though. A series of off-field indiscretions were not taken lightly by then-manager Jose Mourinho, who played him a mere three times in the league – the Portuguese boss reckons the player “is a fantastic person but has the attitude of a child”.

Picked up by Werder Bremen in the summer of 2010, Arnautovic produced 14 goals and 11 assists from 72 Bundesliga matches – with last season harvesting five goals and eight assists from 26 appearances – but his time with the German club was somewhat chequered; fights with team-mates and club suspensions for speeding backed up Mourinho’s previous claims. On the international stage, Arnautovic has turned out 37 times for his country, producing 10 goals and eight assists.

The Prospects

Hailed as the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic upon his move to Inter, Arnautovic isn’t short on skill or self-belief – a lack of application has been his downfall up until this point. A highly-talented individual, he was fielded almost exclusively on the right flank during his time at Bremen, though standing six foot three inches tall, he offers the Potters an intriguing option as a lone forward.

From a Fantasy perspective, his classification as a midfielder right across the games is particularly significant. Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 4.9 in Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Austrian looks a budget-friendly proposition and will be fundamental to Hughes’ attempts to reform Stoke into a more attack-minded outfit after years of Tony Pulis’ less aesthetically-pleasing approach.

If Hughes has a midfield spot in mind for the new boy, Jon Walters’ owners have reason to be concerned. The Republic of Ireland international has played all three matches so far on the right and while he could be shifted to “the hole” behind a lone forward, Walters could also face competition from another new face, Stephen Ireland, for game time.

Alternatively, Arnautovic could take up the lone forward role – handing Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect as the Potters’ main goal threat. Peter Crouch started the first couple of Gameweeks but was dropped for Kenwyne Jones last week; the latter racked up a hat-trick in a recent Capital One Cup match but has been a peripheral figure under Hughes until now.

While back-to-back games against City and Arsenal will be enough to deter any would-be suitors for now, they should offer us a window into Hughes’ thinking and afford us the chance to assess where he intends to utilised Arnautovic. With three home games (NOR, WBA, SOT) and a trip to Fulham in four of the next five from Gameweek 6, Stoke’s upcoming schedule takes a turn for the better and, having grabbed six points from their first couple of fixtures, the Potters have been quick to adapt to their new manager’s approach as Hughes begins to prove the doubters wrong.

Any views on this WC team

    Migs/4.0

Vidic/Walker/Mert/YangaB/Chester (Hull and Toon have decent home games when one of the big 3 play on the road against a tough team)

Walcott/Silva/Coutinho (move Coutinho to Lamella/Michu after I watch a week or two)
Brady/Puncheon rotate nicely over the next few 6-8 weeks for final starting spot

standard non RVP front line of Giroud/Sturridge/Benteke

    Soldado v Benteke v Giroud

This seems to be the dilemma for most, especially on a WC without the intention of owning RvP (such a myself). I'm going to attempt to analyse which one is a better option.

ALL STATS USED ARE FOR THIS SEASON

    Soldado

The penalty maestro. Saving himself with 2 penalties in 3 games, and a sub-standard game against an Arsenal side that outplayed his team. It takes him 37.1 minutes per game to have a chance, and 52 mins to create one.He gets a goal every 130 minutes, and has been subbed off twice. With some great fixtures and a strong midfield behind him, surely he's a goal machine? Not quite. Creativity is expected to increase with 30m Lamela and 11m Eriksen, however the uncertainty surrounding starts will mean he may not have a familiar team to work with for a few weeks. Proven in La Liga as a confident finisher, well-rounded but with no open play goals yet, slightly risky.

    Benteke

Arguably playing for the worst side with the worst fixtures, however Benteke has proven his form from last season wasn't just luck. He took Arsenal by storm, cementing the fact that he is fixture-proof. However, can he carry Villa on his shoulders yet again? With tougher fixtures, the concern isn't Benteke, it's whether the team create chances for him. A chance every 36 mins isn't much improvement to Soldado, but with a goal every 96 mins, definitely improvement. Benteke has the highest shots on target out of the 3, with an attempt coming every 47.8 minutes. He also creates a chance every 37 mins, far more creative than the other two. However, nobody has finishing like him, so assists are less likely to come by.

    Giroud

Great fixtures, great form, great looks :P. He gets a chance every 20 mins, significantly better than the others. He also has a goal every 88 mins, despite being subbed off twice. He gets a chance in the box every 26.4 minutes, meaning he will definitely get his shots. With great fixtures, being a proven goalscorer as well as now having a world class playmaker behind him, Giroud may become essential for the next few weeks.

In conclusion, my order would be:

    Giroud > Soldado > Benteke

Although Soldado and Benteke are hard to choose from, I believe Giroud is a much better option than both.

Giroud's stats are misleading. GW1 or 2 it said he had 6 shots and watching the game he wasn't very threatening. His chances in the box aren't often great ones. He will score goals just saying I think his stats flatter to deceive.

Hmmm. Getting ready for a draft league that starts after the break.

      #1 pick is obviously RVP

but, in a draft league where only one player can own each footballer, who are numbers 2 & 3? I think it has to be Bentenke and Giroud because:

      - Bentenke is getting great service from his team, they're young and fast and pass him the ball; and Bentenke also is good at creating his own opportunities

      - Giroud is going to be getting service that every striker dreams of and has historically scored more than 20 goals in his second season with every club he's played for

      - I don't understand how one can make the case for Soldado when so many players on his team are new and it is all hypothetical, including their ability to play together

Exciting stuff in development at the mo. We're just testing the tech behind the new system that's going to power our matchday comments - the basic principles of our tech appear to be working nicely. We have a solution that will remove load from our servers but allow for live matchday comments (effectively real-time comments) but with your existing accounts and gravatars so it will fit seamlessly into the site as a modification of HomeCrowd. Loads to do but, hopefully, in the next couple of weeks we'll have some screens and further progress to report.

I'd be tempted to keep the FT and wait for next weeks games. Toure might need replacing but I'd rather have the flexibility of 2FT to make changes.

Surely Hazard will play, I'm worried by a lot of things in my team. Coutinho is yet to provide anything, Walcott could be overshadowed by Ozil, Toure is almost definitely gone from Livepool's starting 11 and will Welbeck continue to get game time?

With so many things on your mind I'd say it was better to wait. Hazard currently injured but could well be back by next weekend. None of your problem players need urgent attention so why rush into a decision. Sods law you'll pick the wrong one and end up taking a hit...

Something just doesnt seem right with it to me.

Obviously a lot of people will be getting Ozil in. He will probably be an assist machine, but what about goals? As we have seen already. Goals and Centrebacks = BP's. (dont get me wrong Ozil will score a few IMO)

I'd much rather have players who will be on the end of those Ozil passes though.

      Walcott + Giroud.

That will give you £0.5 to upgrade the defence aswell.

Also, I'd rather have Ben Arfa instead of Nolan, but thats just my preference. But it also saves you £0.3.

Just rotate Barkley and WP around if you are playing a 3-4-3. But you'll be able to play 4-3-3's and 4-4-2's some weeks.

      Vidic IMO
      1. He's nailed on for me at the minute. If anyone will be rotated it will be Rio, with more miles on the clock. Rafael/Jones injurys means one is a RB for the time being or Smalling, and Evans injury means less competition at CB. So for now Vidic is nailed on.

      2. United defence is one of the strongest in the league, so regardless of opposition I think they will be hard to break down. Rio/Vidic is still imperious, Evra has upped his game and DDG looks solid. Plus outside of the city game they have PAL WBA sun SOT STO ful. Screams clean sheets to me

      3. Bonus points. Vidic looks primed for bonus if United keep clean sheets. 25 blocks/clearances/interceptions, 14 recoveries, over 90% pass completion and a tackle monster, all in his first 2 games. He got the 3 against Chelsea and I can see that trend continuing

      4. Vidic will always pose a threat in the opposition box, very strong in the air, can see him nicking a goals (or maybe 2) over the next 8 gameweeks

People need to appreciate that Arsenal lost their main players for the past 2 seasons, which in turn contributed in part to their worse starts to a season for many years.

    This still finished 3rd & 4th respectfully.

This season, not only did they keep their star players, but they added a player of real class, plus Flamini.

They have also had a good start so far, beating Spurs, with 6 points from 9, & they have decent fixtures now.

    Arsenal 4 da league < 3

Have you noticed how Spurs/Gooners seem to have switch places...

One would add players in summer to build on already strong squad, other would leap out last min for poss superstar in making or formerly

One would play very watchible football, get plaudits from neutrals only to miss out on targets, other would strangle oppos to death and win with bumper CS hauls

I dont know if this has been mentioned or commented much on.... But Wilson for stoke at 4.5 is good punt no?? seems to be playing OOP at the moment also at Left Mid...correct me if im wrong... Stoke always have a resilient DEF too....

Really good punt. The OOPness is not much to get excited about tbh (although with BPS and a good effort v WHM it's a bonus) but the fact he's the cheapest nailed on link at 4.5 in a very solid defence is.

not sure he will continue to get a game once the new signings settle in. He wont break into the back 4 of cameron huth shawcross and pieters, and in midfield he's against Whelan, N'Zonzi Palacios Ireland Adam Walters Etherington Pennant Aranautovic Assaidi Shea....

Just too many bodies, he wont get games IMO

He only started cause Palacios took ill in the warm up gw1 also

I think he's playing more infront of the back four, rather than out on the left wing. Still worth looking at IMO as Stoke defence is looking good again.

Heres a nice and simple A/B test

Taking Mirallas + Ivanovic out for...

    A: Lamela + Nastasic/Lescott

    or

    B: Eriksen + Zabaleta

Wouldn't cosider touching either Lamela or Eriksen 'til I've seen them play a couple of games, and I'm a Spur.

        I would consider touching Lamela.

        And I'm not a spur.

      Nice start!

Don't believe the hype about defenders scooping all the bonus points; the stats are skewed because of the low-scoring matches so far. Over time the average number of goals will increase and defenders will be less likely to get as many bonus points as well as clean sheets. Spread the cash around more evenly would be my advice.

Your forward line is very good, though I'm sure you knew that already.

Seen a few people bringing in Dawson.
Terrible decision, I need to get rid of Toure myself but Dawson is not the way to go.
I guarantee he will be dropped, if not this week, then the next.
He was awful on Sunday, his offside trap at fault for the goal Giroud scored.
Giorud generallu bullied him any time he got the ball.
I personally feel both Chiriches and Kaboul are better options than him.
    Don't get him.

Not sure about the timing but KaBoom looks likely soon, very possibly NOR. BUt maybe Hugo is best way into Spurs back line?

Now that last bit is weird to write as a long-suffering Spur.

Walker would be my way to go for it. Hard to know how Eriksen and Lamela will change the style of play, but I have a feeling that Eriksen could benefit the marauding runs of Walker greatly.
