Scout Scribbles – Toure On Course for Liberty Return

Kolo Toure returns to training and is confident of making Liverpool’s trip to Swansea next Monday evening. Andy Carroll suffers a foot injury setback upon his return to West Ham training, Ian Holloway loses a couple of players to ankle injuries, while Villa new boy Jores Okore reveals he’s finally match-fit after sustaining a hamstring injury over the summer:

Toure Back in Training

Reports in the local press suggest Kolo Toure is in line to be fit for Liverpool’s Gameweek 4 trip to Swansea. The Ivorian missed the previous league encounter against United due to a groin injury but returned to training yesterday and with the Liberty clash not taking place until next Monday evening, is afforded plenty time for recuperation. His performances over the first couple of league fixtures have earned plenty praise from Brendan Rodgers, with the Reds boss saying:

“Kolo is the type of character that I love in a back four, an organiser and a leader. I think whether he’s playing with Daniel or whether he’s playing with Martin Skrtel, you need that leadership. Daniel’s a wonderful talent, he’s an international captain, he’s one of the best left-sided players in the world, so it’s two experienced players, but it’s important that you play together, and they’ve held us together really well.”

The Scout Says: Toure’s potential return gives Rodgers plenty to consider as he attempts to preserve the last 100% defensive record in the Premier League. New boy Mahamadou Sakho is pushing for a place alongside Daniel Agger, while Martin Skrtel impressed in the 1-0 win over David Moyes’ side – given that Sakho has been hailed as “a marquee signing” we may quickly get an idea of just where Toure stands in the pecking order. With a price tag of just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) the former Arsenal and City player has afforded us a budget-friendly route into Liverpool’s defence but it remains to be seen if he can hold off the challenge of Sakho for a regular role. Rodgers has the alternative of fielding him at full-back if Glen Johnson is ruled out with a knee injury but the Ivorian’s comparative lack of mobility down the flank may see Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly favourite to deputise on the right.

New Setback for Carroll

West Ham have confirmed Andy Carroll has sustained another foot injury upon his return to first-team training yesterday. Having failed to feature this term due to a heel problem, the summer signing had been expected to return for Saturday’s trip to Southampton but according to the club’s official website:

“Although it is in the same part of his foot as his previous injury, it is a new injury and therefore there will be no prognosis until he has seen a specialist.”

The Scout Says: Having failed to add to their forward options towards the end of the transfer window, West Ham look drastically short of option up top should Carroll be set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines. Sam Allardyce’s side have failed to score since the 2-0 home win over Cardiff back in Gameweek 1 and with doubts over both Joe Cole and Stewart Downing ahead of the St Mary’s clash, it’s likely that Modibo Maiga will lead the line once again, with Ricardo Vaz Te coming in from the cold to take a place on the right flank. With showdowns against Everton, Spurs and City in the next five, Carroll’s likely absence is a worrying sign for Allardyce’s side – with unconfirmed reports suggesting he could be out for up to three months, Allardyce is scouring the free agent market and is rumoured to be closing in on a deal for former Fulham forward Mladen Petric.

Okore Looks to Make His Mark

Aston Villa’s new centre-half Jores Okore has spoken of his determination to make an impact at the back after a hamstring problem curtailed him game time over the summer period:

“I hurt my hamstring in pre-season, but I am feeling good now and I’m feeling comfortable. I don’t feel anything in my hamstring any more. Now I just need to get some air in my lungs and then I’m good to go. I feel fine now and I feel confident.”

The Scout Says: Sidelined for the first match of Villa’s double Gameweek 1, Okore climbed off the bench to replace Nathan Baker for the following fixture against Chelsea. The Danish international was then afforded his first start for Paul Lambert’s side against Liverpool last time out and now looks in the driving seat to retain his place alongside Ron Vlaar in the heart of the midlanders’ backline ahead of both Baker and Ciaran Clark. Coming in at 4.4 in FPL, Okore could be one to watch if he can replicate the goal threat that saw him score four times in the league for FC Nordsjælland last season.

Injury Woes for Holloway

Crystal Palace were dealt a double injury blow yesterday with news that Jack Hunt and youngster Jonathan Williams are set for spells on the sidelines. Hunt –who has only just arrived from Huddersfield – has sustained a broken ankle in training for the Eagles, while Williams is reported to have picked up ankle ligament damage in Wales’ game against Macedonia last weekend could be out for anything between six weeks and five months.

The Scout Says: Hunt’s absence merely underlines the importance of regular right-back Joel Ward for Holloway’s side. With left-back Jonathan Parr stepping up his fitness, Dean Moxey’s security of starts is no longer guaranteed, while the acquisition of Adrian Mariappa gives Holloway further options at centre-half – Ward, at 4.0 in FPL, looks the most secure of Palace’s cut-price defensive assets. Williams has been introduced from the bench in all three Gameweeks so far but with Holloway snapping up the likes of Jason Puncheon, Jimmy Kebe and Jerome Thomas in a 16-player shopping spree over the summer, his game time looked far from certain prior to yesterday’s news.

BR pointing specifically referencing Agger as left sided might be interesting. The fact that Agger and Sakho are left footed and Toure and Skrtel are right footed could mean they are not necessarily all competing against each other. It could be one of Agger or Sakho and one of Toure and Skrtel.

Best way to spend 13.6 on 2 mids?

    a) One expensive, one cheapie e.g Lamela/Coutinho + Scott Parker/Livermore

    b) One pretty expensive, one pretty cheap e.g. Eriksen + Shelvey

    c) Two mid price e.g. Barfa + Taarabt

Rest of my midfield is Walcott, Nolan and Kim

Is this about the new book about scouting? The author was on Five Live last night discussing how Moyes and his team construct the secret room. Word is that he's bringing it to Man Utd. Love the way it combines up to date, sophisticated data with a bunch of old blokes driving around to league one matches and writing on a giant wipe board.

Alot of what Moyes does is very similar to the Soccernomics book's chapter on good transfer policy.

After hearing that I realised just why Fergie rated him so highly.

      I'm having the same debate.
      Only info I have is:
Hull haven't beaten Cardiff in last few seasons so maybe Burner.
But Collins away st SOU is tempting as West Ham have looked good home and away at the back.
Chester is at Home so seems logical.

Sorry, that's not really helped has it!

You would think he wouldn't but there could be an away game where he goes with Osvaldo on his own and plays 5 in the midfield. Lambert not the most mobile if you need to chase the ball down from the opp's back line.

You know coaching badges? Well there's an equivalent of scout badges. To reach level two you have to have collected 10 of them, ranging from setting up a tent, activating a wildcard safely, tying knots, helping an old man decide which defenders to start etc.

Whenever I use rotation with my keepers I always endup missing the clean sheet. For the last few seasons I have just picked a keeper from one of the better teams and stuck with them. This year Mignolet will be my keeper baring injury or DGWs.

Warning from a Spurs fan to people looking at Eriksen.

Firstly, I am not sure he will start vs Norwich. I imagine Lamela will get his first start as he has already came off the bench and looked lively vs Ars. AVB may be reluctant to throw 2 newbies in at once whice he is trying to gel the team gradually together. I can see him coming off the bench v Norwich. Not saying he definitely won't start, in fact I would say he has 60% chance of starting, but the chance of him not starting is high enough for me to avoid him this week.

Secondly, I feel with our array of Centre midfielders and the types of winger we have apart from Lennon (Chadli, Townsend, Lamela all like to cut inside and have goals in them) we will play with a 4-3-3, in which Eriksen will be part of the midfield 3. We lack any creativity in the centre of the pitch and already have enough options on the wing which is why I think he will play CM rather than a LW inside forward like he did at Ajax. Although he will be the furthest forward of this midfield 3, I feel his job will be to dictate play and provide, with the front 3 getting goals. Any creative player in a middle 3 is also dangerous of becoming the 'assist of the assister'.

While he certainly has potential for assists with and maybe chip in with the odd goal I don't think he is worth 8m in FPL unless he turns out to play right behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1. My advice would be to monitor him, it would be brave to jump in now. Lamela on the other hand, although still a risk like any new player, is nailed on for Norwich imo, and is guaranteed to play in a role where he well frequently get in goalscoring positions (inside forward or second striker). Worth the extra money over Eriksen if you insist on getting some Spurs midfield.

        Soldado all day long.
Lamela has the Robben disease of going for goal when he could just pass.
Eriksen will eventually play in the hole w in w out. But agree with holding of for a week or so.

At the min I have Soldado, so will hold on to him and not worry too much about Lamela, but if I didn't have either I would be tempted to go with Lamela myself.

        I'd guess at this:

        Lloris
        Walker Vertonghen Dawson Rose
        Dembele Paulinho
        Lamela Eriksen Chadli
        Soldado

Capoue to rotate in double pivot, Townsend & Lennon rotating wings, Chiriches rotating withbDawson and Vertonghen, Jan sometimes switching to RB

              no need to apologise!

I had exactly the same starting 11 in mind when i looked into this so thanks for reaffirming my thoughts.

I take nothing for granted in football but it does help when other people, particularly the teams' supporters are in agreement of lineups and systems.

I agree with this but I think Dawson's position will veentually be overtaken by Kaboul. Also, Chadli/Townsend might rotate with Townsend's current form. I just wonder what will happen to Aaron Lennon. He suits 4-42 not 4-3-3 but he is a great player too.

I did some research on the pair last week and came to the same(ish) conclusion.

Lamela got my vote and i'll be going without Soldado (not that this makes much difference to my decision)

Seems I misinterpreted this: 'at Ajax, he was fielded on the left of a midfield three as part of an inverted triangle'. Ok this confirms where I think he will be playing for Spurs.

this was one of the more interesting comparisons i found with a good graphic on field positioning:

            http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/basics/spielervergleich/basics_69633_111630.html

Granted, all my assumptions are internet research based but they to fall much in line with Pompeyfans real life experience.

Thanks, actually I read and up-voted that article before! I think he is certainly one to watch for FPL. There aren't that many great midfield premium options imo. Walcott only one I'm convinced on: Silva not enough goals, Michu maybe but hasn't started on great from, Coutinho has just drawn blanks so far, his stats are good but is he going to be a common goalscorer? Chelsea too much rotation potential for me and no Man united midfield options currently, meaning Lamela is my second favourite to Wally.

no worries, they wrote something similar, in reality his position as part of the midfield 3 was fairly fluid with one of them staying further back for the majority of the time (Poulsen). He would have defensive duties tho in pressing the opposition and tackling back.

You do make some good points - he would be a gamble at this stage, but I would've thought he should nail down a slot pretty quickly.

He should nail down pretty quickly, agreed. I have not seen a lot of him but I had the idea he was a Modric type player, not playing too far forward but dictating play. Would this be correct? Do you think he will fit in well at Spurs?

I think he is slightly different to Modric, plays slightly further forward of him perhaps. Good a dribbling and linking up with others in one touch passing movements. He did tend to find himself in a box quite a bit at Ajax. He should fit in well as they have a lot of good passers and technically good players.
