Scout Mission – Gameweek 13

We take our regular look at the upcoming set of fixtures this afternoon, earmarking the scenarios and line-ups on our radar for Gameweek 13:

Moyes’ Use of Van Persie
The Dutchman’s owners suffered last weekend after David Moyes failed to announce he was unavailable for the trip to Cardiff. Wayne Rooney took the chance to rack up his third double-figure haul in the last four Gameweeks in the 2-2 draw and continues to thrive under his former Everton mentor, with four assists in Europe last night. However, with a goal in each of his last four league appearances, there’s no doubt van Persie was getting into his stride before last weekend. Ruled out of the Champions League trip to Leverkusen, question marks hang over his game time for Sunday’s trip to Tottenham – miss that one and his loyal 23% owners will be ready to abandon their faith in him with Rooney, Sergio Aguero and Luis Suarez all proving far more reliable in the premium price bracket.

Benteke’s Performance in a Front Three
The big Belgian has now gone five games without a goal as his form falters since returning from a hip problem. With Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann both climbing off the bench at West Brom to cement their comebacks from injury, however, a return to 4-3-3 looks on the cards at home to Sunderland this weekend. Benteke’s prospects will surely be raised by those additions and, with Fulham, Stoke and Palace in the next six, he could hardly wish for a kinder run of games as he looks to return to form.

Wenger’s Midfield Selection
Despite racking up 12 points from five Champions League group games, Arsenal still find themselves with work to do to ensure qualification. After Tuesday’s win over Marseille, the Gunners boss admitted rotation could be on the cards over the next three league games (car, HUL, EVE) as he looks to protect his main men ahead of a vital trip to Napoli. Given that the defence and lone forward seem nailed-on, Wenger may choose to utilise the strength in depth available in the five midfield berths – a rest for either Aaron Ramsey (with 59% ownership) or Mesut Ozil (30%) would have a knock-on effect on Fantasy teams and test the strength of many a bench. Wenger’s cautious approach with Theo Walcott, which has seen the winger make brief appearances off the bench in the last couple of matches, may dissuade many from investing until the wideman establishes himself as a regular once again.

Mourinho’s Rotation
The Blues boss was also quick to hint at rotation after the midweek loss in Europe at Basel. Mourinho’s decision to make just one change from the side that won at West Ham backfired in Switzerland as his tired team tumbled to a surprise defeat. With ten games in all competitions between December 1 and January 1, Chelsea’s schedule looks set to see many fringe players involved over the next month – a favourable run of league fixtures has seen many eye up Eden Hazard and Oscar, but with their manager hinting the attacking midfielders are likely to be hit hardest by his tinkering, would-be investors may be somewhat deterred if Jose stands by his threat.

Everton’s Defence Without Baines
The only side to name the same back four and keeper in all 12 Gameweeks, Everton’s defence is set for a change in light of Leighton Baines’ toe injury. The left-back could be out for up to six weeks with the problem and, with Roberto Martinez admitting he is looking at several alternatives, uncertainty remains ahead of their home game against Stoke this weekend. Martinez even has the option of shifting to 3-4-3 with Antolin Alcaraz now fit and, with the fixtures failing kindly from Gameweek 16 onwards, his team sheet will be keenly awaited by Fantasy managers for the Potters clash.

Pulis’ Impact on Palace
Having racked up two consecutive clean sheets under caretaker boss Keith Millen, the Eagles roll up to Carrow Road with Tony Pulis at the helm. The former Stoke boss will be desperate for more of the same resilience as he looks to build upon a solid base and guide his new team to safety – Palace have three regulars (Dean Moxey, Danny Gabbidon and Joel Ward) priced at just 4.0 in FPL and an outstanding run of home games for Pulis to establish Selhurst Park as his latest fortress.

Tottenham’s Recovery from Etihad Mauling
After losing 1-0 at home to Newcastle, Andre Villas-Boas made six changes to his side prior to last week’s visit to City. Undoubtedly, confidence will be severely dented by the 6-0 humiliation as Tottenham’s previously resilient backline was torn apart – will their manager keep faith in his side or can we expect sweeping changes yet again as he searches for the winning formula? Rumours of a move to 4-4-2 are growing as Spurs attempt to address a run of three games without a goal, but with United up next, the weekend looks a real test for the north London outfit – if they can keep out the champions, subsequent trips to Fulham and Sunderland bode well for owners of Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker.

Rodgers’ Treatment of Sturridge
After turning out for 90 minutes in England’s friendly with Germany, Daniel Sturridge was dropped to the bench for last weekend’s Merseyside derby due to fitness concerns. With Philippe Coutinho back in the fold, Brendan Rodgers moved to 4-3-3, allowing Jordan Henderson the role on the right of Luis Suarez. Although Sturridge climbed off the bench to nod a late equaliser, his manager is clearly determined to monitor the leg problem that has been hampering the former Chelsea player for a number of weeks. Another bench role against Hull this weekend and Sturridge owners will be ready to jump ship, with Suarez set to run amok over three home fixtures (NOR, WHM, CAR) in the subsequent four.

The Norwich Midfield
Robert Snodgrass is sidelined for a number of weeks with a knee injury and Anthony Pilkington is also unavailable after limping out of last week’s loss at Newcastle with a hamstring problem. While the fixtures may fall in the Canaries’ favour, Chris Hughton has real selection issues ahead. One possibility is a role on the right for Nathan Redmond (4.6), which would allow Martin Olsson to take up a position on the opposite flank – the Swede, at 4.2 and classified as a defender – would arrive on our radars if his manager opts for such a tactical set-up ahead of games against Palace, Sunderland and Fulham in the next six.

Further to my post about United switching to a 4-2-3-1 a few minutes ago what seems obvious to me is that our current wingers SUCK.

    With a team like this:

    ...........................De Gea

    .........Rafael, Evans/Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra

    ....................Carrick, Fellaini/Jones

    Kagawa/Valencia.. Rooney......Januzaj/Young/Nani

    ............................RVP

We have imo the 2nd best attacking LB in the league so why not let him have a proper freedom to roam the left flank as Januzaj tucks inside to take as many shots as he pleases? On the other side we have a solid attacking RB in Rafael who can perform a lot better than Valencia imo if he forges a good overlapping partnership with Kagawa on the right (like Baines & Pienaar).

Also this would utilise Rooney's strengths properly as he is a playmaker in a sense. He was the conductor of quite a few of our goals last season by building up play from outside the box. Of course he'd also still be in the perfect position to interlink with RVP (perfect example is RVP's goal vs Swansea where Rooney drew the defenders away so RVP could take a run at goal and smash it in) to score goals but as RVP is such a great striker we don't need 2 strikers in the box to try and find spaces to score from.

The most obvious point here is that this formation would let us properly replace Young/Nani/Valencia in our starting team with Kagawa. Even if he'd prefer to play CAM he'll be good enough in a tucked in flank role to make it worth the change of system.

What would you say the formation is now? I wouldn't call Rooney an out an out striking partner to RVP would you?

Recently we've been playing 4-2-3-1 because of RVP's injury but I think we usually play a 4-4-2. I do think Moyes puts Rooney as an out and out striker with RVP but he's dropped deep a lot this season because of how weak a pairing Fellaini/Cleverley + Carrick are on their own in the CM area.

You don't let Evra roam cos he leaves a big space he should be defending.

      Carrick is injured.

Valencia is in no way as bad as Young or Nani. His form isn!t great, the other 2 are woeful. Kagawa is far more effective centrally. Januzaj is currently just a lot of potential, needs more games to prove himself. Moyes likes Smalling at rB because he!s a better defender than Rafael.

United have plenty of good players, some need to get up to the standard Rooney is playing at. Crick or Cleverley need to up their creative game and at least aspire to achieve what Scholes did.

Where!s Giggs in your squad? Doing a way better than most of his young colleagues. Age is just a number, class is proven.

Those holes on that flank exist in the current 4-4-2 system anyway when he pushes so we might as well utilise his attacking instincts properly rather than sticking a useless winger in his way.

Valencia is better I agree, but I still don't feel he should be in our starting team anywhere near as often as he is.

He might be a better defender but Smalling isn't THAT much better than Rafael defensively, also as a player at RB he's really bad with his feet in comparison. Valencia relies on Rafael to interlink with him when we play 4-4-2. Otherwise Valencia just does a bad Aaron Lennon impression and tries to run to the by-line and cross. He doesn't have pace so he hardly ever gets the crosses in and just wastes our time (he does win a lot of corners tbf but you can't use that as a positive, it's ridiculous). Rafael needs to be our RB and and this formation would allow him to make up for any defensive frailties with his attacking contribution to the team.

Much much easier said than done when talking about players stepping up. Cleverley will certainly not be a strong creative force within the next 2 years. Carrick does as much as he can and is quality imo (none more so than last year) but what can he do when Valencia/Fellaini/Cleverly always take up predictable and easily marked positions? With a 5/4 - depending on Rooney's position during a game itself - man midfield, Carrick will be allowed to thrive defensively and play simple passes (which he's very good at doing) to the 3 creative players in front of him to counter attack.

Just replace Januzaj with Giggs whenever the kid needs a rest, easy peasy.

The problem is that Kagawa's best role is filled by Rooney when RVP is fit.

Completely agree though Man U over the years has always been about world class wide men from Best to Kanchelskis to Giggs. Now they have no one of that calibre but still play the same way.

This is why my dream signing would be Di Maria, would fit this system at RAM (with Kags unfortunately at LAM). He would also provide that world class touch from the LM that we so desperately need if we do continue as a 4-4-2.

Might be intresting to see a 3-5-2 formation:

      ........................DDG
      ...........Evans....Rio....Vidic
      Rafeal.................................Evra
      ................Jones...Carrick..........
      ......................Kagawa
      ................RVP........Rooney

Rio bringing the ball out from the back (he can pass still). Raf and Evra wingbacks provide the width. Jones and carrick break up play and keep us ticking over. Kagawa in the hole! RVP and Rooney up top interchanging drifting wide wide etc.

I think it could work =)

That's an actual interesting proposition I hadn't considered. Problem is Rio/Vidic will get injured often and I absolutely do not want Smalling to play in a 3 man backline.

Also there's a problem in that Evra and Rafael will have no one playing the Pienaar role to help them attack. This would only work if we dominated possession, imo, and that'd be unlikely.

I cannot stress how much more interesting this game would get if RVP was injured for ages.

Kagawa in the hole, the same price as Ramsey, with an in form Rooney up front, and some tasty fixtures coming up?

I may be a bold man and put him in...(once I find out how long RVP is out for...)

upvotes are used for jokes and for silly dicussions haz vs oscar for example

haz owners will upvote hazard poster during match day and other oscar

real people who constantly answering at RMT's dont get anything wich is unfair

Chelsea have really nice fixtures so Hazard or Gerrard would be equally good to get in IMO,

Gerrard for me. Might be playing deeper but that has not stopped him from getting assists. Also has corners and penalties and only 0.5 more expensive. Pretty much immune from rotation as well with Christmas in mind.

Anybody think this formation might be worth a look for Man Utd:

    3-5-2

    ........................DDG
    ...........Evans....Rio....Vidic
    Rafeal.................................Evra
    ................Jones...Carrick..........
    ......................Kagawa
    ................RVP........Rooney

Rio bringing the ball out from the back (he can pass still). Raf and Evra wingbacks provide the width. Jones and carrick break up play and keep us ticking over fill in for wingbacks if caught out. Kagawa in the hole! RVP and Rooney up top interchanging drifting wide etc.

I think it could work =) Obviously completely against United tradition of having good wingers, but lets be honest our wingers have been terrible all season bar Valencia last night.

It could work but, simply put, it will never happen. Moyes does not have any previous experience with 3 at the back, Man Utd has always been a club that utilises wingers (doesn't matter if they're rubbish now or not) and it would stump the growth of the most exciting youngster United have had in a while in Janujaz.

      Absolutely!

Click on my link and look at my earlier post, I was saying a 3412 (Pretty much same as yours) could work.... I had Valencia on the right as rafa injured but same principle,

GET RID of our shit wingers and play oour best player!!
