Community

The Community Round Up

This week has seen the re-emergence of rotating defender strategies, a concept long thought lost, as premium defenders dominated the scoring in the first few weeks of the season.  The community has also been taking a look at potential improvements to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and its bonus points system, as well as airing their ongoing frustrations surrounding those pesky Yaya Toure- and Aaron Ramsey-owning casuals. We catch up with the week’s discussions, along with the very latest in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Among our most popular posts this week was Maxi’s soapbox-style discussion about team value and his criticism of those placing too much emphasis on how much their Fantasy squad is worth. He ponders whether money made on a player that is a season keeper really matters.

The structure and rules of the FPL game also came under discussion this week, courtesy of Evs. Among ideas to improve the game was Stinkfly’s suggestion that managers be restricted to just two players per team. Also, Gimli Son Of Gloin wants keepers to be given more points for a clean sheet, while Ryan called for defensive midfielders to get rewarded for their hard work protecting the backline.

Granville was also on hand to say his piece, aiming his ire specifically the Bonus Points System (BPS). He was concerned that a whopping seven players gained bonus points during Crystal Palace’s largely drab 1-0 victory over West Ham. Could the BPS be improved? Champ certainly thinks so, with his call to “bring back the man in the stands”.

With premium midfielders starting to pick up points, those who sing at the church of cheap defensive rotation were in good voice this week. Innsie’s post looking at the best options was particularly good, particularly for those already with a Crystal Palace defender. Bankst was another looking at rotation options, this time focusing on goalkeepers. A blend of Cardiff stopper David Marshall and Palace’s Julián Speroni was picked out as particularly enticing.

Talking of keepers, Evs was one of many in the unenviable predicament of having both his stoppers, Southampton’s Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis, injured going into Gameweek 14. During his discussion about what his fellow sufferers plan to do he talked up (and ended up drafting in) Manchester City’s goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, while Hamerstergod was eyeing up Cardiff’s Marshall.

Boruc’s injury will have come as a blow to many a “casual manager” – those who put their trust in the bandwagons and adopt a fire-and-forget policy. On that front, HVT had a go at creating the the definitive ‘casual’ team. True to form this season, it turns out that he created a pretty impressive lineup.

And finally, ahead of Gameweek 14, Konig Luther provided this interesting post about how many points are needed to reach key ranking achievements. Giggs Boson was among those pleased to discover he was just a whisker away from the top 10,000 at the time.

Community Leagues & Cups

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing League has lost another 62 managers across Gameweeks 13 and 14, leaving 488 to continue on.

Evs, Bootsy, Athletico Timbo, Crouch Potato, Chazza and Koneheads currently lead In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues.  Meanwhile, his cup competition has reached the quarter finals stage with La Roja among the community names still involved.

In Fifa Las Vegas’s ‘Championship style’ competitionSomebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up and Champ are currently embroiled in the final, which is taking place over Gameweek 15.

A reminder that the FFS Paddy Power Cup Third Round was played out over this weekned’s matches – we’ll bring you a full run-down of the results and the draw for the next round on Tuesday.

      Lukaku here.

      Don't have Rooney but that seems a good shout. Villa defence didn't seem up to much today, and if Vlaar and Luna are missing again next week it could be more of the same.

      United are struggling to break teams down at home, with there being more space away from home as the other team are forced to attack, more chances inevitably come (hence 2 goals in last 2 away matches, 0 in last 2 home matches).

    Mourinho's January dilemma is a tough one.

    Does he get rid of his misfiring strikers and bring some new ones in?
    Does he just get rid of a newly signed Eto'o who's turned out to be shit?

    But, if he signs a brilliant striker, he risks Lukaku wanting to leave permanently (again).

    All you Lukaku captainers for next week, the last week alot of people captained him was home to Hull.
    He got 2 points.
    He also blanked against Crystal Palace and got just 1 goal in Everton's recent 4-0 home win over Stoke. It seems playing against easier teams at home gives the other players more opportunities as Lukaku gets heavily marked and the opposition try take him out of the game. I still consider him a risk to captain as many other players, (Mirallas, Barkley, Pienaar, Deulofeu, Oviedo etc) can get in the points.
    Or maybe I'm just nervous about not owning him this week 😕

      You make a good point there actually. I think I'll still chance it but the other thing worrying me is that, obviously, it means not captaining Suarez. That guy's appeared in the top scorer for the gameweek list 5 times already (it looks like 4 but this week he drew level on 15 points, they just chose to show Schurrle instead).

            Yeah I'm expecting Man U to bounce back from their defeats and I think Suarez might struggle without Gerrard. I can see more goals in the Villa game than in Spurs v Liv as well.

              I probably agree with that actually, though as a Gerrard owner I'm hoping he will be back. I don't own Rooney but this does seem the week where a differential captain choice could pay off. If I do it, mine will be Lukaku though.

    hazard ozil gerrard ramsey jwp

    suarez ageuro lukaku

    1FT 0.3 ITB

    so heres my thoughts problems and wishes for my team.
    i want howard but dont have enough for a straight swap
    with shaw injured i only have 3 starting defenders so will probably swap to a cheapie to free up some money so that sorts out howard as well.
    gerrard to who?
    how many transfers to make?

      Krul isn't a bad keeper to have. You could easily change just one of Shaw/Gerrard and not take a hit. Assuming Evans and Terry play your starting team looks pretty good.

      If your Everton def gets injured, would you need to do a like-for-like replacement for the sake of your rotation?

      If yes go for Jags, if not go for Distin. That's how I decide between cheapest or mid-priced options anyway.

    Classic quote from Savage on BBC Sport regarding Man Utd.

    As far as their lack of creativity is concerned, Southampton's Adam Lallana would be my pick to put that right. He is young and proven in the Premier League, and he and Carrick would be a good mix in the middle.

    Morning fellas. What's the news on Gerrard?
    What should I do with him and his fixtures is getting crap as well.

    a) Gerrard -> Fer (-4) this week
    Ivan -> Burner, Jedi -> Silva (-4) next

    Would mean playing 3-4-3 with rotating Burner Gabbidon,
    with Silva Fer always play in midfield from GW 17 onwards.

    or

    b) Keep Gerrard this week
    Ivan -> Evra next week

    Would mean playing Fonte (new) this week
    and onwards 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 rotating Ravel and Gabbidon's fixture.

    or

    c) Gerrard -> Coutinho / Fer (-4) this week
    Ivan -> Evra next week.

    Combinating those two.
