Community

The Community Round Up

This week has seen the re-emergence of rotating defender strategies, a concept long thought lost, as premium defenders dominated the scoring in the first few weeks of the season.  The community has also been taking a look at potential improvements to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and its bonus points system, as well as airing their ongoing frustrations surrounding those pesky Yaya Toure- and Aaron Ramsey-owning casuals. We catch up with the week’s discussions, along with the very latest in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Among our most popular posts this week was Maxi’s soapbox-style discussion about team value and his criticism of those placing too much emphasis on how much their Fantasy squad is worth. He ponders whether money made on a player that is a season keeper really matters.

The structure and rules of the FPL game also came under discussion this week, courtesy of Evs. Among ideas to improve the game was Stinkfly’s suggestion that managers be restricted to just two players per team. Also, Gimli Son Of Gloin wants keepers to be given more points for a clean sheet, while Ryan called for defensive midfielders to get rewarded for their hard work protecting the backline.

Granville was also on hand to say his piece, aiming his ire specifically the Bonus Points System (BPS). He was concerned that a whopping seven players gained bonus points during Crystal Palace’s largely drab 1-0 victory over West Ham. Could the BPS be improved? Champ certainly thinks so, with his call to “bring back the man in the stands”.

With premium midfielders starting to pick up points, those who sing at the church of cheap defensive rotation were in good voice this week. Innsie’s post looking at the best options was particularly good, particularly for those already with a Crystal Palace defender. Bankst was another looking at rotation options, this time focusing on goalkeepers. A blend of Cardiff stopper David Marshall and Palace’s Julián Speroni was picked out as particularly enticing.

Talking of keepers, Evs was one of many in the unenviable predicament of having both his stoppers, Southampton’s Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis, injured going into Gameweek 14. During his discussion about what his fellow sufferers plan to do he talked up (and ended up drafting in) Manchester City’s goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, while Hamerstergod was eyeing up Cardiff’s Marshall.

Boruc’s injury will have come as a blow to many a “casual manager” – those who put their trust in the bandwagons and adopt a fire-and-forget policy. On that front, HVT had a go at creating the the definitive ‘casual’ team. True to form this season, it turns out that he created a pretty impressive lineup.

And finally, ahead of Gameweek 14, Konig Luther provided this interesting post about how many points are needed to reach key ranking achievements. Giggs Boson was among those pleased to discover he was just a whisker away from the top 10,000 at the time.

Community Leagues & Cups

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing League has lost another 62 managers across Gameweeks 13 and 14, leaving 488 to continue on.

Evs, Bootsy, Athletico Timbo, Crouch Potato, Chazza and Koneheads currently lead In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues.  Meanwhile, his cup competition has reached the quarter finals stage with La Roja among the community names still involved.

In Fifa Las Vegas’s ‘Championship style’ competitionSomebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up and Champ are currently embroiled in the final, which is taking place over Gameweek 15.

A reminder that the FFS Paddy Power Cup Third Round was played out over this weekned’s matches – we’ll bring you a full run-down of the results and the draw for the next round on Tuesday.

Could be if you want a fresh cheap option. Unfortunate not to get an assist today.

Has been getting forward well in matches at OT and Emirates, would expect that to continue in supposedly easier fixtures. Shame he's not listed as a defender really.

Looked a bit livelier against Norwich, didn't produce obviously, but had chances again. Will start to bury them soon enough I'd think.

Parm still about? I offered my answer on when United last lost two consecutive losses without scoring, and where exactly United are going wrong a few pages back:

2002 I think I read, that may have just been consecutive home losses mind you.

Missed a little 'luck' in the Everton game, without creating much still managed to hit the post and bar. Everton played brilliantly, but we didn't play poorly ourselves. As I wrote on here earlier, missing Carrick who is the most important player at the club (has no equal, no one can even imitate his role).

Newcastle game absolutely no creativity (no Carrick, Rooney, even Kagawa) - central midfield bossed by teams that now have better midfield options. I'd genuinely prefer Cabaye-Tiote to Cleverley-Jones. Seen the defence slated, we've been in this situation of conceding an odd goal here or there for a couple of seasons. Difference being we could always outscore teams (United 4-3 Newcastle only last season).

    Bottom page.

Morning fellas. What's the news on Gerrard?
What should I do with him and his fixtures is getting crap as well.

    a) Going punty.

Gerrard -> Fer (-4) this week
Ivan Jedinak -> Burner Silva (-4) next week

Would mean playing 3-4-3 with rotating Burner Gabbidon,
with Silva Fer always play in midfield from GW 17 onwards.

    or

    b) Going safe.

    Keep Gerrard this week
    Ivan -> Evra next week

Would mean playing Fonte (new) this week
and onwards 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 rotating Ravel and Gabbidon's fixture.

    or

    c) Bit of both with less hit

Gerrard -> Coutinho / Fer (-4) this week
    Ivan -> Evra next week.

After taking stupid hits all the time, I've final learnt my lesson. I've gone up 1 million in the overall ranking in 5 weeks!

Sess, Gerrard, Clyne ---> Fer, Silva, Distin for -4 if Silva is confirmed fit. Can't think of any better options.

Wait a week or two with Sess and buy Cabaye or Ramsey insted of Fer. Unless you have money issues

Then go with Redmond 😉 He won't be rotated till January. He won't get rotated till January atleast and is very direct. Have same problems with Sess, but will wait another 2 gw and then sell for Ramsey/Mirallas/Cabaye or maybe even Paulinho

Just do Distin and Gerrard, no hit. Even if fit , Silva will be a long way from sharp.

I need to free up .5 somehow to get Distin for Clyne. I have 0.0 ITB.

I'm tempted to captain Coleman next week...

The usual Aguero vs Suarez just doesn't look all that appealing this time round.

Don't forget what Aguero did to Spurs' defense. That being said - I'm captaining a well-rested Rooney. 🙂

Makes it a bit more interesting which is good
Given the Baines mantra (never captain, never bench), not sure Coleman is going to be a better option for you.
      Hazard / Lukaku?

Okay, that's pretty much insane. You have someone in your side who is providing more consistent returns -

I can see a CS + attacking returns for the lad is the thing.

Some advice would be much appreciated, having no Everton making me nervous.

Going to stick with SAR for now so Lukaku not an option. Everton midfield a bit of a no go zone due to Barkley and Mirallas / Deulofou rest and rotation. So its the defence then.

Thinking Coleman is the way to go due to combo of attacking threat and decent BAP potential for a full-back. Therefore I think Mert > Coleman is the right move

My plan would then be to lose Ivan next week, could lose him this week but feel like I want to give my double Chelsea one last chance home to palace as it has failed spectacularly over the last 3 that I have had it.

Or I could lose Shaw for Distin but not sure Distin will meet my Everton "coverage" need.

    What do you think?

    Marshall, 4.0
    Ivan, Terry, Shaw (Mert, Ward)
    Hazard, Ramsey, Sess, Shelvey (Brady)
