The ScoutCast – Episode 121 – Opportunity

A new year, a new opportunity. While the frantic festive spell saw me fail miserably in my attempt to take a bite out of Granville’s mini-league lead, January does at least hand me, and other stragglers, a chink of light. The Winter Wildcard could well be a false dawn, however. Having got my squad back on an even keel, the freedom to scrap it and start over is almost a scary prospect.

On the plus side, the situation certainly seems to have Granville spooked. My Mancunian rival is looking on his Wildcard with suspicion, leaving me hoping that, during his own January surgery, he makes one or two vital slips with the scalpel.

Around the Wildcard chatter, Granville and I deliberate over how to fill the Walcott-sized hole in our teams, whilst giving the regulars their usual airing. We even reveal plans on how you, yes you, the listener, can play a part in future ScoutCasts.

Please note: this show was recorded before Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko scored five goals against West Ham. Rest assured, I would have moaned further about the pairing’s miserable two points at Swansea had it been recorded following last night’s goal blitz.

Sweep with the new broom via this link or grasp the nettle of change via the handy player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My defence: Bardsley (ful), Coleman (NOR), Ward (tot) and Murner and Debuchy are out.

Worth doing one of Murner/Debuchy -> Koscielny for a hit? And if yes, which one? Otherwise I'll have to start Ward v Spurs.

He is, although I've heard talk of City being in for Mangala. No chance whatsoever that he would play second fiddle to Nastasic.

This is the risk of an early WC. Nasty is nailed on for now and for me it's worth the risk. If Mangala or anyone else comes in and takes his place, we'll just have to suck it up and get someone else.

Mangala would cost about £30m. I can't see City spending that when they already have 5 centre backs + Javier Garcia and Richards who can play there...
...then again Man city are the poster child for excess.

Just fleshing out what people earlier mentioned about uncertainty over Mannone.

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/sunderland-boss-poyet-confirms-looking-6490159

Poyet confirms he's looking for a keeper. Says it would be cover for Mannone. But this doesn't sound like backup to me:

"However, one goalkeeper who has been linked with Sunderland is 30-year-old Argentina international Mariano Andujar, who plays in Italy for Serie A side Catania."

Considering Mannone used to be a backup keeper for a long time (Westwood as well), I'd imagine Sunderland would be after a new starting keeper. Of course its fairly politically correct to say he's after more squad cover after an injury. Keeps the expectations down.

Does he actually play for Catania or is it lazy journalism? What I mean is, is he their first choice or does he bench warm?

If he does play for Catania and moves to Sunderland, you're right, it looks grim for Mannone.

The Arsenal "back up mids" Ox, Gnabry, Rosicky, Podllski sometimes will all get minutes, but with Wilshere, Ramsey, Ozil and one of Flamini/Arteta nailed on as well, there is too much chance of rotation in my opinion

The Ox is the best right winger though. None of the others are really competing for that position on the right apart from Gnabry, who isn't really a first team player yet.

For instance I'd say the Ox would be prefered on the right instead of Ramsey or Wilshire. I honestly think Ramsey and Wilshire are competing with each other to play alongside Arteta/Flamini

He is better in the middle, but he can't compete with Ozil or Ramsey, so if he has a place it will be right wing.

Although Ox can play anywhere in the midfield 5, so it's not black and white. Cazorla is less of an athlete than Wilshere, so we could see Caz being replaced. 😀

Agreed. I had 352 until his injury. Can't afford Ozil so it's 343 with Lukaku instead.

Strong midfield options (Silva, Yaya, Hazard, Oscar, Ozil, Cazorla...)
Striker options falling or failing (RVP, Rooney, Lukaku, Giroud, Sturridge, Remy)
Budget strikers emerging (Rodriguez, Berahino, Hooper, etc)

      Morning chaps,

Would just like gauge the opinion on here about which team is better:

      Team A

      Mannone Marshall

      Koscielny Coleman Nasty Azpil Ward

      Mutch Hazard Ozil Silva Janujaz

      Aguero* Suarez Rodriguez

      Team B

      Boruc Davis

      Koscielny Coleman Bardsley Chester Ward

      Eriksen Hazard Ozil Silva Janujaz

      Aguero* Suarez Rodriguez

      * enough funds in the bank for Aguero when fit

B for me although I don't like the fact you have no keeper options so Boruc has to play every week.

I don't like that either but it's the only way I can afford Eriksen.

Sorry guys this got lost in previous pages, appreciate your thoughts

I had a really bad start this season and currently chasing a 100 points lead in my mini league, I have activated my WC and currently thinking of going with this team:

      Cech K. Davis
      Koscielny Baines Chester Ward Bardsley
      Pozuelo Lallana Januzaj Silva Hazard
      Negredo Giroud Suárez

Team value is 104 and .2 in the bank

I need you thoughts on the following:
      - I initially had Ozil/Cazorla in my plan to have attacking cover from Arsenal but decided to go with Giroud since none in my league have him, I have a feeling that he will outscore O/C, wise?
      - Silva/Negredo willchange to Aguero/Ramsey when they are fit.
      - Cech/Bardsly or Manonne/Terry with downgrading Januzaj?
      - Pozuelo or ??

      Thanks in advance.

Has there been any word on Evans at all? When he came off in the week I read that he'd be likely to miss the weekend..
