Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 26 – Wednesday

Daniel Sturridge grabs a goal and two assists as Luis Suarez has an off day at Fulham. Emmanuel Adebayor plunders the points against a porous Newcastle. Arsenal’s backline remain defiant in a goalless home draw with United, whilst Peter Crouch notches in Stoke’s home draw with Swansea in a night that saw the weather conditions decimate many Fantasy teams:

Sturridge Outscores Suarez Yet Again as Reds Edge Past Fulham
The Uruguayan drew a blank for the first time since Gameweek 18 at City in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Craven Cottage. Worryingly, Suarez has now scored just once in the last five Gameweeks – coinciding with a return to action for Daniel Sturridge, whose comeback from an ankle injury has had a hugely detrimental effect on his fellow forward. With Sturridge on the sidelines between Gameweek 13-20, Suarez scored or assisted 18 of the Merseysiders’ 22 goals – since the former Chelsea man’s return, the South American has had a hand in seven of their 20 strikes. Sturridge’s goal and pair of assists and subsequent maximum bonus means he has now outscored Suarez by 59 points to 40 since his return and, whilst few will be willing to part company with the latter, the case for captaining Sturridge grows stronger by the Gameweek.

Gerrard’s Relentless Consistency
The Reds skipper is up to fourth in the midfielder standings after supplementing an assist with a late spot-kick winner. After drawing blanks in the first six Gameweeks, Gerrard has embarked on a run of remarkably consistent Fantasy performances, with a goal or assist in 14 of his last 17 appearances – bizarrely, perhaps due to the fear of overloading on Liverpool players, with many acquiring Suarez and/or Sturridge, Gerrard’s current price of 8.9 is less than his initial starting cost of 9.0. With an ownership under 9%, he looks a strong differential route into Brendan Rodgers’ free-scoring side for those looking to load up on the Merseysiders.

Richardson in the Points as Cottagers Put Up a Fight
Having scored twice at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, Fulham once again suggested they are on the rise as an attacking force under Rene Meulensteen. The Cottagers boss named 10 of the same starting XI as the Dutchman looks to roll out a more dynamic side and watched on as Kieran Richardson proved an unlikely goal hero by scoring once and providing an assist in the 3-2 defeat. Few real positives can be taken from another defeat but, given that Fulham had scored three times in six prior to the United match, they may well be ones to watch ahead of games against West Brom, Cardiff and Newcastle in the next four.

Adebayor Runs Riot Against Sorry Magpies
Handed the lone forward role as Spurs went 4-1-4-1 at St James’ Park, the Togo international tore Newcastle apart with yet another devastating forward display. Adebayor’s brace, allied with the maximum bonus, means he has now served up eight goals and four assists over 10 appearances under Tim Sherwood – his average of 7.7 points per game since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas is now on a par with Sergio Aguero’s season average. Despite a price tag of 8.0, he remains in just 10% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams, but with a run of consistency that has harvested points in seven of those 10 matches, he can expect further investment ahead of games against Norwich and Cardiff – the latter match comes in Gameweek 28, when the likes of City are facing a blank.

Midfield Options Increasing for Tottenham
Whilst Christian Eriksen dropped to the bench for last night’s match, Paulinho turned in another strong performance for the north London side to stake a claim for our consideration. The 6.6-priced Brazilian struck for the second time in three appearances since returning from injury – under four matches for Sherwood, he’s already equalled his tally over 16 league appearances for Villas-Boas. Nabil Bentaleb, at 4.5, has now played every minute of the last six and looks a secure budget option – the youngster chipped in with a pair of assists in the Magpies rout, whilst Nacer Chadli emerged from the bench to throw his hat in the ring for a starting berth by bagging his side’s fourth and his first league goal for the club.

Newcastle in Freefall
The Tyneside team already seem to be stuck in limbo, with no fear of relegation and little chance of European spots to fight for. Last night’s 4-0 thrashing means Alan Pardew’s side have now drawn blanks in seven of their last eight matches – a malaise that stretches back beyond Yohan Cabaye’s departure and Loic Remy’s suspension. With the latter now having completed his three-match ban, Newcastle will be a little more optimistic heading into a run of fixtures which sees them play Villa, Hull, Fulham and Palace in the next five but, with morale plummeting and the defence leaking 10 goals in three games (compared to 10 against in the previous 10), few will be willing to invest in the Magpies on current form.

Hernandez Produces Again to Earn Swansea Draw
The Spaniard picked up an assist to earn the Swans a draw on a blustery night at the Britannia. Having been handed a start by Garry Monk at the expense of Jonathon De Guzman, the 5.6-priced winger’s cross for Chico Flores’ headed goal was his third assist in the last two games, and may well hint at a return to the form that earned him an early season bandwagon. Meanwhile, Flores’ goal, cancelling out Peter Crouch’s 17th minute opener, was his second in his last four games, and with a clean sheet and six bonus points also accrued in that time, the Swans’ top scoring defender is beginning to emerge as a feasible differential for our five-man backlines. However, with trips to Liverpool and Arsenal coming up for the South Wales team in their next three, managers should bear in mind that investment in Hernandez or Flores comes with a significant risk.

Defences on Top in Emirates Stalemate
A goalless draw in last night’s headline fixture saw both Arsenal and Manchester United’s defensive assets plunder the points. In a game which saw the likes of Olivier Giroud and Robin van Persie fail to make any sort of impact for their sides, the Fantasy returns were left to both team’s defences, with the home side’s rear-guard faring the better thanks to their superior BPS rankings. Whilst last night’s clean sheet saw Per Mertesacker overtake John Terry into second position for defenders in FPL, it was his partner at centre back who once again proved himself a bonus points darling. Laurent Koscielny, at 0.9 cheaper than Mertesacker, has accumulated nine bonus points in his last seven fixtures, compared to the big German’s comparatively modest total of three, and managers eyeing up a route into the Premier League’s tightest backline will now surely look to the Frenchman as their favoured choice – the Gunners have home games with Sunderland and Swansea, with a trip to Stoke in between, before the schedule take a turn for the worse.

He could've had a (stunning) goal and another assist vs Arsenal (and was asked to play wide then)
Could've had a brace last night too

A bad gameweek for me. I will be preferring Suarez for the captaincy still. Sturridge is a fantastic player, last night though benefitted when giving the ball to Coutinho with a simple pass. Pure chance that he should then score. Suarez created a much easier chance which he curled wide. The late penalty for his other three points could easily have been a booking for diving. Add in Suarez hitting the post and his general contribution, he is still their most important player. Have to say I was impressed with Coutinho too.

I agree, despite the fact that those with the 100 pt leads will still have City players, so they won't be that easy to catch. Nevertheless the game will have lost quite a lot of competitors last night - of that I'm sure.

I have no idea what you are on about.

I brought city players in for these 3 fixtures and then it took a massive dump on me. This fixture was the most promising then look what happends after i get my C choice correct. I saw sturridge playing last week and i knew he had more potential than suarez who had drifted far wide.

Last week was also ridiculously frustrating after terry got injured and chelsea managed a cleanie

Before that it was Ramsey and aguer just when i though i had nailed down a nice diff with ramsey before everyone got him in.

You mean before Wenger gave him a cameo or two?
                Hardly a good differential.
Anyway, you have 1 more chance.
Will probably avoid City again due to you. Cheers. 🙂

It's no wonder there are so many foreign managers in the PL. 2 of the British managers Moyes & Sherwood have supremely talented no.10s in Mata & Eriksen, yet they have both just been wasted on the wing when they play. What's the point in buying quality players like that and playing them out of position?

Can I make a claim for most ridiculously lucky story of this strange week?

Third reserve on my bench was Mohammed Diame. He'd looked like a cheap, regular 2 point sit on bench option when I did my early January wildcard. Shortly afterwards, he gets injured / dropped and still isn't starting for West Ham.

Tuesday night comes on for 30 minutes and gets 11 points, with a goal and an assist.

No way he was going to get into the main 11 was there?

    Hmmmm....

    Anyone beat that?

It's lovely to get a nice bit of luck isn't it?

After yesterday's games, Vlaar's 9 points were last on my bench and I thought "ah well, another unfortunate benching dilemma"

Then the City game was cancelled, and I was getting Puncheon and Koscielny off the bench for Kolarov and Dzeko, Vlaar staying on the bench

Then finally the Palace game is called off, Puncheon ruled out and I have a great result. To top it off Koscielny gets me another 9 points I wouldn't have had!

Assuming Aguero is back soon and depending on FA cup results the main decisions I am facing are:

    1. Get Coleman or Baines after the Chelsea game?

    2. Front line of Sturridge | Suarez | Aguero and downgrade one of my 3 premium mid?

    3. Front Line of Aguero | Suarez | Adebayor and keep all my premium mids?

    4. Do I get Arsenal attacking cover for their 3 nice fixtures?

REPOST from bottom of last page 😈

Was last season a low scoring year or is this season a high scoring year?

After GW26 last year: 1557pts (59.9pts per gameweek) gave me a rank of 6,653. 🙂

After GW26 this year: 1570pts (60.4pts per gameweek) gives me a rank of 41,004. 🙁

Does this give credence to the idea that this is the "season of the bandwagon"? Perhaps the game is just getting more and more competitive, an average of 60.8pts per gameweek for the season was enough to get 14th in 2010/11. #humblebrag

Edit: On second look, 2009/10 was the highest scoring season in my time playing the game and poo poos the idea that the game is getting harder. My ML winner got 2,368pts (62.3pts per gameweek) that year and was only rewarded with a rank of 5,648. That was the year of the big frost when nearly all games were called off one weekend barring City and Tevez scored a hattrick.

This year is extremely high scoring.

      http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/58/history/

My highest score = 2nd worst result.

Think I should beat that score this season with all the DGWs etc.

Yep, your highest points score was in that insane 2009/10 season and it was your 2nd worst rank. 😯

Your last 4 gameweeks this season have been incredible. What a jump, well done. You have an average of 63.6pts per gameweek so far which if kept up would mean 1st place in a lot of other seasons.

I think it might be down to the change of BAPS. There are more ties for BAPs so more players get BAPs in each game this year, (e.g. Fonte & Chambers both got 3 this week) and with them going more to defenders, those who do get regular BAPs are more affordable than previously.

Yes 09/10 was the highest scoring year i believe. I got 2411 that year and finished 2284.

This season is on target to possibly exceed that season, particularly with the double gwks coming up.

High scoring years will be down to a number of things, but mainly i believe its the captaincy that boosts it.

If the season sees a high scoring golden boot then you will see high overall scores. 09/10 saw Drogba finish on 29 goals, with Rooney second on 26 and Bent on 24, Tevez on 23 and Lamps on 22.

How much more will we actually know about GW29 before the next deadline?

Following FA cup results, we will know if any teams definitely don't have a blank but we probably won't know about any re-arranged games by then, will we? So some teams who look like having a blank could conceivably have it rearranged for the same gameweek and we'll be in limbo about them.

As usual, the sensible thing to do is wait. There's FA cup and Europa cup to throw up potential injuries plus any added information about GW29 blanks following FA Cup.

But he will rise twice more and if nothing happens that stops you getting him, you will be annoyed that you waited for nothing.

I'm in the same boat, knowing im certainly going Dzeko to Ade, but I'm going to wait. The FA Cup is going to throw up some cancellations of fixtures and you wont mind about losing 0.2 if it means you're in better shape for GW29.

Three weeks ago I was atop my mini league of friends, now I'm 19 behind, primarily because I haven't jumped on the Sturridge bandwagon. I suppose I should take a hit and get him in to mitigate risk and limit the damage?

Don't do anything until after the cup and european games.

      And 19 points is nothing

19 points is absolutely nothing. You could be 19 points behind on the final gameweek and still win without having to do anything crazy.

I've made up 90 points on my ML leader in 3 weeks.

I'm tempted to go Oscar -> Gerrard as an early transfer.
Liverpool's fixtures are good, and Stevie G is weighing in with assists and the odd goal.

But I may hold off until after the FA Cup tie vs. Arsenal.

Think I prefer Sterling for much cheaper

Opens up money also for Ade > Aguero 😉

Can't afford Stevie to get injured, so just wait and hope the price doesn't go up too far.

When you click on a forum user's name and it takes you to their profile page, what does the little number in the grey box next to their name denote?

Mine is "2" so I thought it might represent mental age? 😉

Just your rep level. Not a big issue, hence hidden. I'm a "2" also.

Who's going to win at the weekend?

    MCI CHE
    ARS LIV
    SUN SOT
    EVE SWA
    CAR wig
    bri HUL

Does a draw result in the team missing gw29 due to replay being played at same time as next round of the cup?
