Scout Mission – Gameweek 29

There may only be five fixtures on the weekend agenda but, as always, there’s plenty for us to keep an eye on. United’s frustrated front man, the fitness of Fulham’s new Greek acquisition, the Stoke defence and the game time of a trio of midfield options will be keenly under observation:

Van Persie’s Performance
The popular belief is that the Dutchman is feeling fidgety. Certainly his post-match comments following the defeat to Olympiacos were not the words of a content striker – Van Persie venting his frustration and citing tactical naiveties as the cause behind his current inability to win matches for United. Fantasy managers have, somewhat reluctantly, been drawn to David Moyes’ charges this week due to their double fixture in Gameweek 31, with Van Persie currently sitting second in our Captain Poll. It remains to be seen if he can repay that faith with a Hawthorns points haul, though; we’ll be watching his level of performance and body language with great interest.

The Mitroglou Mystery
Konstantinos Mitroglou arrived at Craven Cottage in the form of his life, having scored 17 goals in 19 appearances for Olympiacos. With Fulham struggling to plug the gaps in defence, the Greek hitman looked key to their survival hopes by providing a cutting edge at the other end. Strangely, however, we’re yet to see him start a match. Felix Magath handed Mitroglou a debut from the bench against West Brom but, a week later, declared him unfit to feature against Chelsea. Later, the Fulham boss was to suggest that the Greek was already struggling to adapt to Premier League demands, hinting he was not yet up to speed with his new defensive responsibilities. So, is Mitroglou fit and available or is there more to this situation? His appearance for Greece last night would suggest the latter. Fulham fans will certainly be keen to see their would-be saviour unleashed on a leaky Cardiff defence, while Fantasy managers have yet to see if Mitroglou can emerge as an unlikely end of season differential.

Zaha’s Return to Bluebirds’ Lineup
A shift to 3-5-2 saw Wilfried Zaha excluded from Cardiff’s starting lineup at Spurs last weekend. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already revealed his “horses for courses” approach to team selection and while that may see the United loanee make way for tough away trips, he’ll surely be expected to earn a recall at home to Fulham – a must-win game for Solskjaer. Identified as a key figure only this week, the Bluebirds’ boss will likely look to Zaha to provide the spark – the moment of brilliance to light up what could be an edgy affair, littered with misplaced passes and defensive mishaps. Fantasy managers will be watching and waiting for an explosion of points from the winger – something to suggest he could yet figure in our seasons.

Puncheon’s Pitch Time
Charged and fined by the FA this week for comments made against Neil Warnock on Twitter, the Palace winger was strangely omitted from the match day squad for last weekend’s trip to Swansea. Tony Pulis reportedly indicated that the winger was rested – a strange decision given that Puncheon had looked by far Palace’s most threatening player in recent weeks. It remains to be seen if Pulis hands Puncheon a recall now that the FA charge is resolved. His absence against former club Southampton this weekend would suggest that there has been off-field issues that would force Puncheon’s Fantasy owners to plan an exit route.

The Canaries Recovery
Thrashed by the brute force and ruthless finishing of Christian Benteke, a bruised Norwich City will take to the Carrow Road turf to face Stoke in a must-win encounter. The pressure on Chris Hughton will be immense and he’ll be looking to an improved performance from a defence that has kept four consecutive clean sheets at home. Fantasy managers will have invested this week in the hope that the rearguard can recover, whilst Robert Snodgrass returned to training today after recovering from a wrist injury and will be expected to provide the creativity and dead-ball delivery to put Stoke to the sword.

Stoke’s Potential Without Adam
The loss of Charlie Adam to a three-match ban will sting the Potters and threatens to derail a recent recovery which has seen Mark Hughes’ men climb to giddy mid-table heights. Adam’s absence won’t be a major concern to us given that Fantasy managers are now unlikely to consider their attacking assets – it’s the defence that interests us. Stoke have some favourable fixtures to come, including a run of Britannia matches that offer strong potential for defensive returns. We’ll be watching to see how the rearguard repels a determined Norwich, with an eye on investment in the month ahead.

Eriksen’s Return and the 4-5-1
Ruled out with a back problem against Cardiff, Christian Eriksen could well return to the starting lineup at Stamford Bridge with Tim Sherwood expected to shift to a 4-5-1 against the league leaders. It’s a tricky scenario for the Spurs boss who will be reluctant to drop Roberto Soldado to the bench but, at the same time, mindful that Chelsea could dominate midfield areas. A like-for-like approach would seem sensible and, in Emmanuel Adebayor, Sherwood has a striker who can lead the line having scored superbly on his last trip to the Bridge.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Pick one for the upcoming doubles

    1) Aguero + Nasri/Nolan + Distin
    2) Remy + Yaya + Baines
    3) Lukaku + Yaya + Coleman

    Thanks in advance!

Start with how important Aguero is. He will make or break your run-in depending if you play it right given his a cost and upside. I would say with 12 games in 9 GWs, a minimum of 1 City attacker is needed.

I don't think Yaya covers the lack of Aguero personally and I would probably go with Nasri and Aguero with Distin.

If you disagree, then I would say 3 is the best option without Aguero, assuming Lukaku picks up form before the DGW.

I would be very wary of Remy. He can blow hot and cold

Well those who prefer 2 can say that
-Remy is an out an out striker unlike Lukaku
          -On pens
-Focal point of his team's attack
-Baines better than Coleman due to attacking points & more bonus

So your preference would be 1,3,2 right?

Impossible to pick on to be honest.

I think Aguero and Distin are a good combination due to upside and value, but the midfielders in 1 aren't the best!

I don't know what to do with Lallana, I've had him for most of the season but I find myself wanting to ditch him for AJ now as AJ has more fixtures and saves money..

Navas has played a grand total of 9 minutes more than Nasri this season, so they're virtually even, but Nasri has scored 4 goals, 5 assists, and 6 baps, whereas Navas has scored 4 goals, 6 assists, and 9 baps..

              TLDR; they're pretty much even.

I looked at Baines, but it came down to a choice of him or Gerrard, I think Gerrard is the better DGW asset. If there was a way of getting him that didn't involve sacrificing Gerrard, Suarez, Aguero or City defence I'd take it.

I'm really not feeling the Remy and Lukaku love, especially at the expense of Aguero.

Sure, you would save £4m or so. But where to spend it? Midfield is dreadful this season, such slim pickings.

With my planned transfers, my GWK 31 team will look like this...

    Mannone
    Kompany -- Coleman -- Cahill
    Yaya -- A Johnson -- Sterling -- Hazard
    Suarez -- Sturridge -- Aguero

And I'm pretty happy with that. 9 players playing twice (just Cahill and Hazard aren't).

Am I missing something blindingly obvious? How could I improve that team?

That is pretty much the definition of a blinkered, biased opinion haha

We're ahead of Barca by a point, and Atletico by 3, but any one of the three could win the league, all it takes is one mistake, one moment of madness from just one person in all 3 20+ squads.

All it takes is Soldado/Adebayor to do well and Arsenal to falter due to their incredibly tough run-in.

The run in is not that tough. People are blinkered in thinking arsenal will fall apart. What made you support Madrid anyway? Not sure if serious

I fail to see how Spurs are "awful" when at the moment they're the 5th best team in the league.. Just because they're your rivals doesn't mean you have to think they're "crap".

I used to support Liverpool as a young child as my dad supported them, my second cousin (Steven Staunton) was playing for them, and I'm Irish living in Meath so there's no professional football team anywhere near me.

Once Staunton went to Coventry (I had swapped from Villa to Liverpool and back, depending on where Steven was playing) I said I'd had enough and I wasn't going to follow him to Coventry. Now, being about 7/8 at the time, I had no real allegiance to Liverpool and I wanted to pick a team for myself and then stick with them forever. I picked Madrid as I love the mentality of the club ("We'll just outscore you and entertain") and I loved the galacticos of Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Casillas etc. so I've been a Madrid fan for the last 13 years.

The only drawback is that I constantly have to explain it as if I HAVE to come from Madrid to support them, feck that.

Desperately seeking some valuable advice here!

ML rival has 60 points on me, consider the following.

A - he will definitely. Get aguero

B - he still has his wc

    C - he is fielding 7 in gw29 and I am fielding 10

    D - I have 3 ft to use before gw31

Question 1 - Do you think it is possible for me to win the league?

Question 2 - get aguero and make small progress every week? Or gamble big and not get aguero?

This is a well structured post, just for the record 🙂

      1) Very possible, 60 points is not that much if you can gain a bit from the DGW, which leads me into...
      2) Don't make stupid gambles, try to be smart about the transfers you do make, Aguero isn't the only way to gamble, although Lukaku/Remy might well work out for you.

    BORUC
    AZPI (chester, williamson, kosc, coleman)
HAZARD (C), LALLANA, (snograss, adam, toure)
    ADE (suarez, sturridge)

Kosc + Adam ---> Evra + £5.2m MID who has a game this week (for -4)

-I would probably use Evra for the DGW
-The -4 would at least be gained back from the 2 players playing

It is bizarre the way people are talking about him being a viable alternative to Aguero. Such short memories.

Blank after blank until owners were relieved of the torment by his injuries. Very odd.

So he's a better option to you than Sturridge/Suarez?

As a recovered owner, I urge you to study the 10 weeks leading up to his injury

I have Suarez already, I'm left with the following possible choice

            a) Baines, AJ, Lukaku

            b) Distin, Gerrard, Lukaku

            c) Distin, AJ, Sturridge

Here's the real problem with Lukaku, he's a fitful player, you have to catch his bursts of form. i have owned Lukaku 4 times this season, at some point I will have to sell Sturridge to fund moves for other DGWs

I think you're overthinking it to be honest. Get the best players and see what you've got left to work with.

Going without the most in-form striker in the premier league, who isn't even that expensive, just doesn't make any sense to me. Replacing him with a striker who has scored 2 goals in his last 11 matches makes even less.

Of course, you could be right, he could be about to hit one of his streaks. Good luck to you if you do it.

Come to think of it 5ppg isn't that bad though he's not really a (c) option unlike Kun.
Well it might depend on how the funds would be used.

The PPG thing is big though

you have Suarez in a category of his own. You then have Sturridge and Kun equal.

you're then down 1.2 before you hit Adebayor.

it could be argued that injuries have done for Kun, for a while he was almost matching Suarez

    Chaps,

Well with only 3 months to go and after seeing England last night - what would your England starting team look like Vs Italy??? And formation

    I'm going for: -
    Hart
    Johnson Cahill Jags Cole
    Gerrard
    Barkley Lallana
    Rooney Sturridge Baines

Although not sure where Rooney fits these days - hes really none of the above and definately not a striker at the moment - so if I was to change anything - maybe

Stirling -> Rooney and Rooney -> Barkley

    Whats your team????

Baines playing as high up the pitch as sturridge. That's novel.

have you seen where he plays for Everton - all down the flank. The reason I'm putting him there is for his tracking back and free kicks and crossing ability.

I think he could do well there

best team would involve rooney getting knack

his utter lack of tactical discpline ruins any chance of 'shpe'

    a) Gerrard and Distin or
    b) Baines and AJ

    What scores more
    1) Marshall this week and Mannone and MOlsson in GW31 (9 DGWers -8 required) or
    2) no keeper this week and Adrian and Chester in GW31 (10 DGWers -12 required)
