Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Terry and Cech Casualties for Chelsea

Petr Cech and John Terry both limp out of Chelsea’s goalless draw with Atletico in Spain, with the keeper now ruled out for the season. Everton’s Kevin Mirallas will also miss the remaining matches due to a groin injury, whilst Sylvain Distin is a big doubt for the Toffees. Etienne Capoue is back in training for Spurs and Chris Brunt is set to be fielded as left-back for West Brom this weekend:

Jose’s Stalemate in Spain

Chelsea were without the services of Eden Hazard last night as they held Atletico Madrid to a 0-0 draw in their Champions League semi-final first-leg. Ashley Cole was handed a rare start at left back in place of the suspended Branislav Ivanovic, whilst Fernando Torres led the line against his former club in a 4-3-3 formation that saw Jose Mourinho start with three defensive midfielders in an effort to keep out his opponents.

Whilst there were no goals to light up the game, the big news came in the form of injuries to two of Chelsea’s most experienced players. Both Petr Cech and captain John Terry were forced off with problems, with Mourinho confirming post-match that the former won’t feature again this season and the latter likely to face a similar fate:

“Petr Cech’s season’s over. Don’t ask me technically, but season over. And John – we have to play the final for him to play with us.”

The Blues boss also hinted that he may field a weakened side for Sunday’s vital trip to Liverpool. With the second leg of the Atletico clash just three days after the Anfield encounter, Mourinho suggested he could make wholesale changes to his starting XI and focus on Europe instead:

“I would play with the players that are not going to play Wednesday. This is not a decision the manager can make on his own. I’m just a piece in the big club and I have to go with the decision we make collectively. If the club decides to go with everything in the direction of the Champions League, I’m ready for that. We have a big match on Wednesday to play, a big match that can give Chelsea another Champions League final.”

The Scout Says: Job well done for Jose – but at what cost? The losses of Cech and Terry look set to be a massive dent in his side’s European and domestic hopes and will also have ramifications for the Fantasy landscape over the final few weeks of the season. Chelsea’s rearguard have the highest joint ownership of any defence in the Fantasy Premier League game, having provided a constant source of returns during the second half of the season, but that could all be set to change without their captain controlling the backline and their number one goalkeeper between the sticks. Consequently, owners of Liverpool’s attacking assets will be licking their lips at the thought of the likes of Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling coming up against an under-strength Chelsea defence this Sunday, with the away side likely to rely on the inconsistent David Luiz to fill in at the back. For those who still believe Mourinho’s men can continue their defensive form for the last three games of the campaign, Mark Schwarzer’s budget 4.5 price-tag and certainty of starts will entice.

INJURY PROBLEMS FOR EVERTON

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Kevin Mirallas will miss the last three fixtures of the season after limping out of Sunday’s victory over Manchester United. The Belgian sustained a groin injury in the latter stages of the match and will now sit out the remainder of the campaign.

“Kevin’s scans came back and they have revealed a small tear in his groin. He is going to be out for the season which is a real disappointment and a shame because he was in a phenomenal moment of form. It is not a major injury. It could be anything up to five or six weeks, and that’s looking at the worst-case scenario. Kevin is a quick healer and I would be surprised if he is not available after three or four weeks.”

Martinez also revealed that Sylvain Distin is a doubt for this weekend, having been withdrawn at half-time on Sunday with a hamstring injury:

“It’s very much doubtful. The scans revealed something of a problem but until the swelling clears it is impossible make the right diagnosis. In the next 48 hours we will find out how long Sylvain is going to be out.”

The Scout Says: Yesterday’s news will have come as a bitter blow for Mirallas’ 12% ownership, especially the 12,000 managers who snapped up the Belgian following his goalscoring performance last weekend. Attacking returns in each of his last five performances has seen the wide man acquire something of a late-season bandwagon, despite his continued risk of rotation. The midfielder’s injury now brings the 5.4-priced Gerard Deulofeu firmly back on to our radars; the on-loan Barcelona youngster is likely to replace Mirallas in the starting line-up for the remaining three fixtures of Everton’s season and will be keen to end his loan spell with a flourish. However, his classification as a forward is still a huge stumbling block. Meanwhile Distin’s hamstring complaint could be set to further frustrate his owners, with the centre-back having already missed out on clean sheet points against Manchester United due to his early withdrawal. John Stones is available for a meagre 4.2 and looks the perfect alternative to Distin for those wanting a slice of the Toffees’ in-form defence, who don’t have budget to spare.

CAPOUE RETURNS TO TRAINING

Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue back in training, having failed to feature since a 1-0 loss to Norwich in February. Spurs boss Tim Sherwood was, however, quick to emphasise the need to ease the Frenchman back into action after his ankle injury.

“‘It’s great to see him back in training but he has been out for two months, so we have to be careful. We’ll continue to monitor him closely.”

The Scout Says: Despite Capoue returning to full training, Sherwood’s stressing of how “careful” he needs to be with the midfielder means that he looks unlikely to challenge Nacer Chadli or Paulinho for a role in the centre of midfield in the remaining weeks of the season. The 7.1-priced Cristian Eriksen remains the most enticing option in the Spurs midfield, although Aaron Lennon – with two assists in his last two games – looks a decent differential for his side’s strong closing schedule (sto, whm, AVL).

Brunt Set for Defensive Stint

West Brom boss Pepe Mel has admitted he is likely to play Chris Brunt at left-back in the weekend home encounter against West Ham, with Liam Ridgewell almost certain to be ruled out with a knee problem:

“I think he can do a good job in that position. He’s the best option right now. It really is the most important of games for us. It’s a cup final and can be THE game to spur us on and give us life. It’s vital.”

The Scout Says: Having returned from injury in time for his side’s previous home game with Spurs, Brunt grabbed a goal in the 3-3 draw to suggest he could yet play a pivotal part in the Baggies’ last few matches. A shift to defence will more or less kill any appeal, with Graham Dorrans and Morgan Amalfitano the best options amongst the West Brom midfield – both have notched twice in the last four and, priced at 4.4 and 4.2 respectively, have a double Gameweek 37 on either side of home encounters with the Hammers and Stoke.

Come to think again for GW36 Liverpool vs Chelsea

Mourinho's Chelsea biggest loss this season in EPL was:

    vs Newcastle 0-2 (Away)
    vs Stoke 2-3 (Away)
    vs Man City 0-2 (Away)

Then again, they won vs Liverpool 2-1 (Home).

Do you think it is likely Chelsea will lose like they did vs City (around 2 goal margins)? Liverpool is gaining momentum and Chelsea is weakened--plus they have UCL semi.

Therefore, Suarez (c) is valid. Other opinions?

Would be nice to get a different perspective on my team. 1 free transfer and £2.3 in the bank

    Mannone
    Coleman Azpi Baines
    Eriksen Sterling Gerrard Silva
    Suarez Lukaku Aguero

    Davis Ward Chester Pozuelo

Silva to Ramsey is a given, is anything worth a hit? 4.2 to play around with

    A) Lukaku to Rooney
    B) Azpi to Mert/Kosc

I would rather do B and watch Rooney against Norwich, he has been terrible lately, would rather have Lukaku. Cheers!

not sure i understand all the ramsey love.
every transfer out of a mid ends up with "get ramsey - no brainer" and many here even considering him for the armband.
this is not bale/hazard/silva/eriksen type of a player that everything goes through him, he is not on penalties and rarely on any set pieces, he is far from being the most advanced positioned mid in arsenal, and carries a lot of defensive duties.
giroud, podolski and ozil are ahead of him in the odds to score, and cazorla is very close.
yes he is a good player having a good season but just came back from a long injury with one good game (hardly established form).
in short, good player, worth considering - but a no brainer/captain material? thats just a step to far IMO.

ramsey may play in the pivot, but he times his runs into the box so well and is clinical...

he is the only player who actually makes runs from midfield and so ozil and cazorla can find him in great positions to score with regularity

hardly established form? this guy has proven he is a class player this season, and his speedy return to form emphasises this

everything good that we do goes through ramsey...he is our engine

I don't think im being bias either (I hope :D)

No you make total sense. Arsenal play with fluidity and old notions of AM, pivot, striker etc have little meaning. At the end of the day Ramsey is the one making real penetrating runs into the box and he puts his chances away in clinical fashion, the space he finds allows him to do this.

I think sides haven't worked out how to defend against a player running in from deep. They can mark the wingers, striker and CAM but another player running in as well? It will just confuse defences and I know this as I play as a CB myself.

They aren't used to running in behind their own back line as a sweeper. Its different, they screen the back line not chase players into the 6 yard box. This is where the confusion starts.

No he isn't. He's been pretty average the last month or so, by his lofty standards. This is also highlighted by his increase in diving and other temperamental actions. He's giving the ball away loads, wayward shooting etc.

Sterling has been our best player for a while now on current form.

My mate tipped Ramsey to have a good season at the the start of the season and i laughed at him. He has always been an average player signed from Cardiff who was always injured.

In 18 games before his injury he got 8 goals and 7 assists, in the 1 and a half games back from his injury he has 1 goal and 3 assists.

I say he is a "no brainer"

Seems that people are allergic to fantasy points this season, all the Yaya hate confirms that who along with Suarez has been player of the year for me.

Ramsey has a higher points per game ratio than any of the players you mentioned.

i know it will sound silly, but his clinical finishing was messiesque and above - and for a player who had an average career till this year (to put it mildly) there must be some regression to teh mean.
anyway, i will go back to my corner now - he is obviously a good player this season and a worthy player to have in your fpl team - just no way near captain option IMO.

that's what I'm saying too. It's annoying, but would any team not appealed that decision?

I think this is kind of exciting, because now we can suppose one big team to go spend money very fast in summer, so it will reshuffle things fast.

And then there's ManU who will also attack the markets.

And a good chance exists that PSG and ManCity will both also get transfer bans, and appeal them, which would mean that they might go a bit hyperactive on markets as well. Although they have much less need to do so than ManU and Barca. In fact, if I was managing either ManC or PSG, I would probably just leave the team intact and bring up some youngsters from academy anyway.

Which was a very good buy. He was the best striker in the world that time, very important for their CL victory, and essential the next season too until the injury turned everything bad. At his age, coming back from 8 months with broken tibia takes just too much time, he didn't have that much time to get back to his career. Fortunately he managed to be essential member of WC and CL winning teams before that injury.

Yeah they were always going to appeal it, but that doesn't mean FIFA had to suspend it, Barca pretty much admitted they were in the wrong and they have 4-5 underage players that they 100% illegally bought. There are 3 factors that make the transfers legal and Barca ignored all 3.

The only thing Barca were annoyed about was the fact that the decision to ban them was made in November but they were only told a month ago officially, so they didn't know during the January transfer window.

The fact that FIFA are now allowing them to transfer in players over the summer renders the ruling completely pointless and barely even a punishment.

Erm, yes they pretty much have to. Any other club facing a transfer ban will also only have that ban in effect once the final decision is made. That's because otherwise, in case they'd decide that Barcelona is innocent, they would have nevertheless punished them already. They can't really do that. They must let Barcelona continue as normally before they have decided the case.

It is similar to when a player gets a ban. If you appeal the decision, the ban will be suspended for the time they need to consider your appeal. Otherwise, if they turned the ban down later, they would have to conclude that they have already banned an innocent player for a couple of matches.

That the ban should take effect at some point and most probably will is a matter that there's is little or no debate about. I don't know what the actual transfers are, so it's hard to say anything about their case. People in football world who seem to be more aware of what has happened seem to think that they are as guilty as it gets, and my gut feeling is that even if they weren't, the things they are doing with youth players should be condemnable (but same goes for other big clubs too). But as long as they are not convicted you have to suppose that they are innocent, and that possibility being there the ban must be suspended.

My issue is why they don't just decide it at the very start of the transfer window. Easy to sort out.

Yeah, speeding up the process wouldn't be minded. That would actually be part of the legal security for Barcelona too, to have their case decided fast. 😉

they might not wish that though 😆

Yeah but FIFA suspending it for the summer would be a complete cop out by FIFA and them taking the easy way out. Barca won't care if they can't sign players in 2015, they've already illegally signed all of the youth talent they need.

Including Messi for that record, who should have never been signed by Barca, but thank God he was as Barca made him who he is today.

I wouldn't mind it if Barcelona remotely had a case but they don't. If there was ambiguity it'd be different. They've broken the rules in regards to a number of youth players. All I see here is FIFA worrying that their punishment might actually impact the club so now Barcelona will load up on players and the transfer ban will be worthless.

Not really sure why they couldn't hold the appeal at the very start of the transfer window and have it decided long before the window closes.

Because that would be punishing the innocent - as they are innocent until otherwise proven and as long as the case is open it has not been conclusively proven that they are not innocent.

And if you wonder why is that a punishment, very easy: their transfer targets could sign for other clubs during that early period of summer transfer window.

that transfer ban will still not be worthless. It will have less effect than we would like it to have, but obviously losing two transfer windows will have a big effect after the summer too.

They made the decision to ban Barca back in 2013, they only made it official last month (something that understandably infuriated Barca), but now they've wasted another month only to suspend the sentence for the entire summer.

They're guilty of the crime, its as simple as that, its not like its that hard to give a verdict.

"Did you sign this player from Korea before they turned 18?"
        "Yes"

"Did his parents move to Barcalona for work related matters?"
        "No"

"Did you do that with 10 players?"
        "No, just 5 or 6.."

Now they can spend loads this summer and be set. Where is the punishment if they're found guilty? It's just telling everyone that handles transfers correctly that you can break the rules and be grand once you appeal.

But what if they were found not-guilty? I'm not saying they weren't guilty, but that is what you must assume before the case is concluded. So if they put the ban in effect already, they would end up punishing the innocent. There is no way they could not suspend the ban for the time the appeal is processed.

I see what you're saying and its true, but they will be found guilty, or at least every journalist or insider I've heard speaking about it (Guillem Balague, Sid Lowe, etc) all say that Barca are guilty, which they wouldn't do if there was much doubt, so surely it doesn't take FIFA 4 months to process the appeal..

Don't forget, FIFA have already investigated them and found them guilty, this is just Barca just saying "please check again and suspend the sentence for a year."

It appears to us that they are guilty, but we are not personally well informed about that, so I would not haste to say anything definitive about the result of the case yet. But even so, they have the right to appeal it and as they appeal it the case is still open and they cannot be treated as if they were already judged guilty. It's simply how justice and law works. It may be annoying at times, but it's better than the alternative.
