Season Shapers – Gameweek 2 – United 0 Chelsea 0

Our new series of articles, which focuses on pivotal matches in our Fantasy seasons, got underway last week by focussing on Luiz Suarez’ return to action, after he missed the first few fixtures through suspension. This time around, we assess Chelsea’s Gameweek 2 trip to Old Trafford and the long-lasting effect Jose’s tactics and team selection ultimately had on our plans:

The Scenario

Jose’s first road trip. After back-to-back home wins against Hull and Villa in double Gameweek 1, Jose Mourinho’s first away fixture upon his top-flight return was a visit to Old Trafford. The Chelsea boss had disappointed many Romelu Lukaku owners during the double by starting Fernando Torres, then Demba Ba, as his lone striker for the first couple of fixtures –a series of impressive pre-season displays convinced many to invest in the Belgian but he was afforded just 40 minutes over the first two matches, earning his owners a mere two points.

In midfield, Juan Mata’s owners were also concerned. The Spaniard started the season at 10.5 to Eden Hazard’s 9.5 but played in only one of the first two matches, accumulating 65 minutes against Villa before being hauled off, whilst the Belgian had managed every minute of the double by comparison. Already, it seemed Mata’s game time was far from certain under the Special One.

The Events

Mourinho’s team sheet for David Moyes’ first home match in charge of the champions once again underlined his lack of faith in Lukaku and Mata, as both warmed the bench for the entire match. The selection of Andre Schurrle as the lone forward was perhaps the tipping point for Lukaku and also gave us an insight into Mourinho’s views on Torres and Ba – as if to emphasise that point, he then acquired Samuel Eto’o just three days later.

The goalless draw was not just an early warning sign of United’s home struggles under their new manager, it afforded us a window into Mourinho’s preferred tactical set-up when it came to away matches against fellow title contenders.

The Impact

Fantasy managers were quickly reminded of the fact that when it comes to playing for a clean sheet, no one is quite like Mourinho. Chelsea conceded just two goals on their travels to the rest of the top eight – with shut-outs also achieved at City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Southampton, it became clear that benching their defensive assets, even for difficult fixtures, was never a wise move.

The Blues ended the season with 19 clean sheets, conceding just 27 times, with John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill all amongst the top eight FPL defenders, whilst Petr Cech finished third top scoring keeper. Whilst Mourinho continued to tinker with his attacking options, a consistency of selection at the back meant that doubling up on Chelsea’s main defenders was a more than valid tactic across the Fantasy games.

Up front, Lukaku had seen enough. The big Belgian’s loan switch to Everton brought him firmly back onto Fantasy radars and by the time he made his Toffees debut in Gameweek 5, his price had plummeted from 8.0 to 7.4, making him an outstanding mid-price option for our three-man frontlines. Installed as Roberto Martinez’ first-choice forward at Goodison, Lukaku went on to fire 15 goals (more than any Chelsea player and only four less than Eto’o, Torres and Ba combined) and also served up 168 points in the FPL game – sixth spot amongst strikers.

For Mata, an exit route took a little longer. By the time the winter transfer window opened for business, Hazard had firmly established himself as our Chelsea midfielder of choice, producing eight goals and seven assists, whilst the Spaniard had mustered just two assists for the Blues and was allowed to leave for United. Six goals, five assists and 14 bonus points over 15 appearances for the Red Devils equates to an average of 6.3 points per game and will ensure the Spaniard remains in many managers’ plans when the new campaign gets underway.

Just isn't true. They may have picked their moments to park the bus but not very often and they may have had a great defence that kept a lot of CS's....but overall their attacking intent was right up there...Crap strikers and poor finishing is another matter altogether..http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/3846/

Perhaps I should have added against their main rivals like the article.
Was talking more about their defensive qualities in general.

Mou is great at making those calls about when to park the bus...something BR needs to learn, or so it seems. It would be a shame if Chelsea's season was judged a failure due to "parking the bus" when in fact they did as much attacking as anybody in the league. It should be known as the season they didn't have any strikers, which of course Mou has more or less said...and he's right.

It's been incredibly frustrating to watch. Our finishing has been somewhere near comical this season. Against Swansea (vs 10 men), Sunderland, Liverpool, Norwich and Cardiff we had 119 shots and mustered 6 goals. Plenty of analysis that could be done about the position of shot etc, but bottom line it's been woeful.

Terrible, maybe the worst strikers in the prem..and I include the bottom three in that. At least they have the excuse of not getting many chances.

More than just the finishing though, it's been the movement, particularly of Torres and Ba. With our attacking midfielders, even if the strikers aren't scoring, they should be creating spaces for them to drive into, but it's just not been happening. Although the Schurrle experiment seemed to fail, it was nice seeing someone up top making smart runs.

No doubt, something we've been very good at not doing generally over the past 7/8 years. A shame, but our performances (results may be more suitable) vs City and Liverpool gives me huge confidence going forward.

Would have taken 3rd and a CL semi-final at the start of the season.

some interesting points, but some might fall foul of EU laws.

My thoughts are that they should never have allowed tv deals to get so out of control, and the change of the champions league to more than entrant 1 per country has been the main factor in ruining football competitiveness. Just look at a list of teams who are seeded in the group stages for next year's champions league. It's pretty much the same

Pity we had a change of article - there was an excellant debate going on Goalkeepers ,
Just to add a little I will repost this it was in relation to blue lions q a on your Gk situation for the season ahead :

I suppose it's a question of priorities really , and where you want to spend your cash ,
you can break it down this way :
    - 10m gets you eg Czech / 4m
    - 10m can also get Krul / Mannone (5m each)
    - 9m can get Adrian / 4m
    - 8.5 may get you Burnley / 4m
So being realistic there is in around 1.5m to save here
You gotta look at the points returns , Howard was top scoring keeper on 160pts and finished 14th in the overall standings , so for me it's hard to justify that kind of outlay 6m , When you had Speroni / Mannone say 4.5m at one point - not too far behind points wise (20+) when you could invest that cash elsewhere .

I'd say Prem League survival and avoiding large debt would be key for the next season...from there use the TV money to invest in the squad. They should pay a visit to Portsmouth or Leeds to see how the policy of chucking money at an unrealistic ambitition pans out.

Good prediction Pepin. I was looking for a big season from him. It was there too, the problem being that we FF players rarely like to have players of uncertain minutes in our teams, particularly for one of the scarce 3 striker spots.
Would Dzeko have got the gametime or anything like if both Aguero and Negredo were fit for the season?

I'd like to think so, but doubt it.

It's a good question but I remain of the opinion that without seeing the full price list individual player prices are an irrelevance - it's why I always hated the dripfeed of players they did a couple of years ago.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

      Diego Costa

Who is looking to draft in Chelsea's new recruit, should he sign for the West London club? Who is waiting to see if he ends up being another Soldado? Or who is looking to draft him in straight away to ensure they get the kudos for owning the next potential Michu (2012-13) from the start?

I had Soldado in my GW1 team this year - everything looked good; great conversion rate, on penalties, apparently the 'right sort' of play for the Premier League, a host of creative midfielders queuing up to put chances on a plate for him...

36 goals in all competitions in 2013/14. Just Four assists. No red cards in 2013/14 ...despite having a reputation as being easy to wind up.

And me, although his points were gained purely through the dubious penalties Spurs were getting. Seems unlikely he'll retain penalties at Chelsea though so that dents his appeal I'd have thought.

All of this said, if he's banging them in pre-season and the price is right I'll be caught up in the madness on the site and probably be giddy with excitement at the Costa (C) in my GW1 team 😉

Hazard has proved this season to be a poor captain pick...he's either a huge score or nothing...the best captains are steady eddies like Rooney or Suarez who get a goal or assist here or there most weeks and monster scores every now and again.

I've missed having a Drogba or Lampard Chelsea player that I could captain - I hope he is it.

Good point, I bet 90% of my successful captain choices were from Liverpool and Man City this season, would be nice to have another team in the mix.

Hazard has consistency in real life though, so his consistency in FPL returns may improve drastically if Chelsea signs a top class striker or starts to play the one they already have.

He's shown that he can score well but his previous season in La Liga was not exactly impressive (10 goals I think?) Doubt he'll be on penalties and is possibly going to have an inflated FPL price. None of that strikes me as a must have player.

We should get to see a bit more of him in pre-season with luck, otherwise it will be down to who else Chelsea get, what price he is and who else is available come the start of the season.
Far too many factors yet to be resolved to make a rational decision on players. The end of July is plenty of time to start serious planning of our FF teams.

I'd rather spend my time planning my cheap bargains to accommodate the BIG boys.

All that said, I had him in my Chumps League teams. So probably.

The best thing they could do is ask Fergie politely to stay away...they can never move on while he's sitting there in the stands Emperor-like.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I don't see how it has noticeably been a problem. The issues are far bigger than someone sitting in the stands.

Funny how these regional colloquialisms feel so right to one person but are utterly bewildering to another.

I can still remember going to University and the strange looks I got when I said that I'd "Get wrong" if I did something I shouldn't. To me it's the normal way to describe being told off and up until that point I'd assumed it was a universal phrase!

I quite like them...someone should compile a book and install the best ones as UK wide sayings.

The oddest one around Somerset is "where's it to?" instead of "where is it?"

The regional ways people in the 1980s accused someone of lying were were also varied, from the simple "ooh, itchy beard" in Brighton, to "chin pull yarn" in Southampton and I believe the use of "chinny reckon" in London.

Ah! We used to say "chinny rack on" whilst rubbing our chins! There was the occasional whimsical variation where someone might say "Jimmy Hill" instead but those were rarer.

I think there are a lot of Victorian books around, usually private printed which have hundreds of local sayings.
I have one for the West Riding around Saddleworth which has all the subscribers listed. Is more a story of local folk but the terms used are there.

I felt sorry for the defenders to be honest CS, I think the system leaves them very exposed.

For me, the difference was confidence. Last season United (who weren't anything great) could concede and still look quite dominant. It seems that whenever Pool conceded in recent weeks they suddenly lost all confidence. Probably where having someone like Fergie on the sideline is a big advantage.

Agreed. They are left constantly exposed and get all the blame. They also are getting 0 credit for facilitating attacking football.

It's the reverse in Chelsea. Mou praises his defenders who do their job. But their job is made very easy by keeping the line low and forcing all the attacking players to constantly track down to help out their defenders. While Mou was right that Hazard's failure to track Juanfran caused the goal, Hazard was also right that the way they defend makes it hard for them to attack.

Exactly! Not that they haven't made mistakes but the whole point is the more pressure that is put on them, the more likely a mistake will happen!

Agreed absolutely, from one extreme to the other. I think it's why I liked City the most of the 3 this season, there seemed to be a greater sense of balance.

I'd have Agger in. The confidence that Agger brings to the backline, I rank him very very highly and I think he's a fantastic defender. Sakho or Skrtel could play with him and be a good deal more confident.

I think in regards to full backs, it's imperative that both are defensive and attack minded. GJ just attacks. So I think he needs replacing.

As for the deeper midfielder, Stevie G does it very well now and has clearly adjusted.

I think the biggest learning curve is for the attacking lads, when that ball is out of possession they need to turn the heat on immediately. Suarez is usually pretty good at it but it needs to be better as a whole purely for the sake of making the system as flawless as it can be, all systems have shortcomings. I do think there's a lot of potential to build on this system at Pool.

Defenders is where we disagree. Skrtel is running out of time showing he can be relied on at top level, but at times he and Sakho seem like a very top CB pair. Sakho is clearly the best player out of the three, so he should be trusted, whether with Agger or Skrtel, and I like Skrtel's potential more, Agger often gets bossed by big attackers. Agger has reputation to be dominant with ball, but he really hasn't been any better than others this season. On the other hand, in the long season you will inevitably need 3-4 CB's, so it makes good sense to rotate the defenders. Imo they will need all 3 mentioned, and Coates as an understudy for the backup choice. Unlike most, I don't think there is any urge in their central defence. Many enough strong players, now just give them time and support.

They need a new defensive midfielder: Lucas is good but he plays too little and with more games he will be missed even more. Also, their lateral defenders really ain't good enough to top level. At least not now.

But even more, as you say, they need the attacking players to come faster down to defence. There is a whole bunch of players who just don't do that job. Maybe some of them can't either, but then you should not play all of them against big teams. Here we fully agree.

Of course. When exposed, you make mistakes easier and less support you get more likely the mistakes lead to goals - and thus will be noticed better too.

It's funny thing people aren't aware of, but it usually takes good defenders to successfully play strong attacking football and good attackers to successfully play good defensive football. This is why defenders in smaller teams often look much better than those in bigger teams, while the difference really is that the defenders in big teams that dominate have much more responsibilities and larger task to do.

And it takes good complete team and well balanced strategies to play strong football in both ends and dominate games thoroughly. Yeah, in the end City was the best team, playing best football, and deserved their victory, whether we like it or not.

But hey, removing the logic and going on the pure emotional side, I do understand why it's a downer. They've had an absolutely terrific season, it's a shame really that they did this well in some regards. If they had maybe slipped up a couple of months ago and finished 3rd or 4th then everyone would be absolutely delighted, it's just that sense of what might have been. Still, chin up and all that, CL football and a great season, soon enough the disappointment will fade away 😀

Looking ahead to the World Cup game, did anybody save/know where to find, the final points for players from Euro 2012 or the last WC game?

I'd like to do some analysis.

      Cheers.
