World Cup 2014 – PlayON Semi-Finals Picks

After a couple of days’ break, the World Cup action returns with a bang this evening. Brazil take on Germany in the first semi-final at 9pm before Argentina and Holland go head-to-head tomorrow night and, as Fantasy managers fine-tune their teams, we cast an eye over PlayON’s World Cup Game, with the hours ticking down until this evening’s 7pm deadline:

There’s a BIG £1,000 GUARANTEED POT on offer today just for the Semi-Finals Gameweek. You can enter up to three different teams into the game, with the deadline for entries closing at 19.00 this evening. Enter the £1,000 GUARANTEED GAME here.

Goalkeeper – Manuel Neuer
Having served up three clean sheets in their first five fixtures, Germany square up to Brazil this evening in fine defensive form. With the hosts’ star man Neymar ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a back problem and the likes of lone striker Fred struggling for form, the £8.8m-priced Neuer’s chances of another shut-out certainly look promising. In Wednesday’s semi-final, Holland’s Jasper Cillessen comes in at just £8.4m – he’s conceded once in the last three and is up against an Argentina side that have scored a single goal in all but one of their previous four World Cup matches.

Defender – Marcos Rojo
Suspended for the quarter-finals win over Belgium, the left-back offers Fantasy managers the cheapest route into Argentina’s backline. Setting you back just £8.5m in the PlayON Player Price List, Rojo has already found the net against Nigeria and with Alejandro Sabella’s side keeping out their opponents in three of the last four, offers a strong chance of points at both ends of the pitch against Holland. If you’ve cash to splash, though, it’s difficult to look beyond David Luiz or Mats Hummels, at £9.5m and £9.4m respectively. Luiz has now scored or assisted in each of his last three and, as we saw against Colombia in the previous match, his set-piece duties could prove instrumental as the hosts attempt to overcome Neymar’s absence. Hummels’ winner against France in the quarter-finals took his tally to two goals and three clean sheets in four appearances, underlining his importance in both boxes for Joachim Low’s men.

Midfielder – Arjen Robben
One of the few form midfielders remaining in the tournament, it’s perhaps no surprise that, at £9.5m, the Dutchman is costlier than any other option in the middle of the park. Robben’s blank against Costa Rica last weekend was the first time he’s failed to deliver attacking returns so far – with his role up front set to continue, though, he’ll be hoping to maintain the form that has produced three goals and a pair of assists so far. With Neymar ruled out, the responsibility on Oscar to produce the goods for the hosts against Germany is magnified. His goal and assist contribution against Croatia in the opener seems a long time ago now but if Phil Scolari’s team are to prevail, the Chelsea man, at £9.2m, looks pivotal to their hopes. Coming in at £9.0m, Toni Kroos is the only midfielder to have played a part in more than one of Germany’s goals – he’s delivered a pair of assists so far and his set-piece duties were pivotal in seeing off France, after Hummels headed home his free-kick to seal a 1-0 win.

Forward – Thomas Muller
The Germany frontman will fancy his chances of getting amongst the goals in this evening’s encounter with Brazil. Phil Scolari’s team have managed just a single clean sheet so far and are devoid of the suspended Thiago Silva at centre-half – with four strikes and two assists also to his name, the £10.8m-priced Muller has played a part in six of his side’s 10 goals and looks the man most likely to end the home team’s hopes of raising the trophy. Back in contention after missing the last two matches through injury, Sergio Aguero is available for a mere £9.5m ahead of Argentina’s clash with Holland. Granted, the Man City striker failed to produce in the group stages but, as Gonzalo Higuain showed against Belgium, Alejandro Sabella’s side have options other than Lionel Messi to fall back on when the going gets tough. Robin Van Persie served up his worst display of the tournament Costa Rica last time around but on any other day, the Dutchman could have had a brace to add to his three goals so far. At £10.2m, he’ll still earn plenty of investors for Holland’s clash with Argentina – Van Gaal’s side will be buoyed by the fact that Nigeria notched twice against the South Americans during the group stages.

The semi-finals deadline arrives at 19.00 today, so get picking for the £1,000 game at www.playon.co

In the sun game 3rd place play off gets points. Can people tell me from previous WC if teams are bothered about it and make loaads of changes to give people a run out? Cheers

Usually a mixture. Players that haven't got minutes yet usually get a runout.

There's usually loads more goals than the final too

Yes rotation will be on the cards...but, historically....

Since 1990 a total of 9 goals have been scored in the finals
Since 1990 a total of 24 goals have been scored in the 3/4 play off

Since 1990 a total of 6 CS's have been recorded in the finals
Since 1990 just one CS has been recorded in the 3/4 play off

The 3/4 play off has recorded more goals than the final in every tournament since 1990 bar one tied.

" Rodriguez was the most card-happy official heading into the tournament, having dismissed 51 players during 79 international matches before this year's festivities, according to Sports Interaction (h/t Simon Rice of the Independent). "

Might be worthy to note for those buying Fernandinho/ DMs in that game.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/07/07/world-cup-2014-semi-finals-predicted-line-ups/

Klose is predicted to start but that's a bit contentious. There are people who think he won't because of his age. I'd avoid in favour of more absolutely certain starters.

Who would you rather have in FOX,

    Hulk or Higuain?

Higuain would mean I'd have to downgrade a couple of other players to afford him. ( ie. Hummels Sneijder Luiz/Schurrle )

    Cheers 🙂

Wijnaldum is looking like a good budget option for playon if he is a nailed on starter. Sneider is striking the ball really well and was unlucky not to score with his 2 shots hitting the bar and post against costa rica. Brazil look like the crowd was will one of their players to score for them so it is risky owning german defense in this game.

    Stumped in the FOX game.

    Neuer
    Rojo - Hummels - Luiz - Blind - Howedes
    Muller - Robben
    Messi - RvP - Higuain

That is a mere $5K over the limit.

    I see 3 options:
    1) Downgrade Luiz
    2) Downgrade Higuain (possibly to Hulk)
    3) Change formation completely/start again

    Thoughts very much appreciated 😀

Just having a tinker now, tbh I'm not particularly liking a more attacking formation.

          3-5-2:

          Neuer
          Hummels - Luiz - Rojo
          Kroos - Robben - Perez - Sneijder - Schurrle
          Messi - RvP (Depay)

A lot of guesswork in that midfield.

      This fits in the budget:

      Neuer
      Rojo - Hummels - Luiz - Blind - Lahm

      Messi - RvP - Hulk

I rather hope Hulk doesn't score though 😛

    http://www.espnfc.us/team/germany/481/blog/post/1939022/germany-will-sacrifice-ideals-for-glory

nice piece on the new german obsession with set plays. apparently stems from this moment:

    (2012 Champions League final)

Seven players who will feature on Tuesday (Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Philipp Lahm, Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller, Bastian Schweinsteiger and David Luiz) were on the pitch that night at the Allianz Arena. Bayern Munich were leading 1-0 through a Muller goal on 83 minutes. Chelsea won their first corner of the match 120 seconds before the final whistle.

On the way to the Bayern box, David Luiz came past Schweinsteiger and told him, "And now, goal." The prediction instantly came true. Didier Drogba scored the equaliser. David Luiz, Schweinsteiger said months later, went past the Bayern midfielder shrugging his shoulders, "almost feeling sorry."

I kinda feel like Robben has a better against Argentine defenders than Messi has against Dutchmen, and if DiMaria's injury means Messi pulling back to midfield to open up play, it might mean him getting less scoring chances...your thoughts? I agree on Dante>Howedes however.

    Scoring as follows:

    Goal: 6
    Assist: 2
Shot on target (that doesn't score): 1

    Who to captain?

    A) Robben (tougher fixture, but takes more shots)
    B) Muller (easier fixture, but takes less shots)

Despite all their boast and banter I knew they'd chicken out when they'd really have to play us. Through all that unwarranted bluster, it always shone out that they're afraid of being humiliated after having got the favourite status due to lucky picks for group stage.

He'll have to, his hand is being held and its already prominent in the transfers
Zarate, Kouyate, Cresswell & Diego Poyet & perhaps this lad too.

Makes a big change from the likes of Downing, Jarvis, McCartney & Matt Taylor!

Hopefully Teddy Sheringham isnt just picking up his monthly cheque and can actually make us a positive influence going forward instead of the hoofball!

    Cillessen
Luiz, Hummels, Boateng, Garay, De Vrij (Rojo)
    Oscar, Fernandinho, Lahm, Kroos (Mascherano)
    Muller (Messi)

Lots of room to manoever players around, mascherano and messi will no doubt come in and is a sure bet for solid scores with a good depth to the squad.

    Thoughts?

      Can't see Luiz scoring.

Rojo would need an assist to be worthwhile over Demi

Fernandinho has ridden his luck in the last two matches. I'd say he's odds on to get sent off. Gustavo over him by a mile.

I'd look at the Germany line up and decide on a punt or two. Otherwise you won't make any major moves, unless you are consolidating.

I'd look at other options over Fernandinho myself. He's been lucky not to pick up more cards this tournament. Given how many times Silva has bailed out Luiz in this world cup, I'd prefer Dante. He appears to be the more "Covering" centre back so more recovered balls etc

I've been enjoying the Fantasy iTeam World Cup game - played for the first time - the skill clearly lies in planning ahead and active player management. As of today I stand a creditable 940 overall. I will want to play the game for 2014-15 premier league but have no idea of rules nor strategy. Can anyone who has played this before give me a brief overview? How do transfers work? How many in each game week etc? Thanks

Think it will be much the same, I'm guessing. With three transfers each game week. And the possibility to have say Van Persie on Saturday, sell for Sturridge on Sunday, then sell again to buy Aguero for Monday night.

I see this as a tough decision. How about you?

    A) Higuain, Shurrle, Sneijder = 22,5m
    B) Messi, Muller, Gago = 22,5m

Now I'm leaning towards B with a team like this:

    ----------------------------Cillesen------------------------------
Hummels -- Luiz -- Boateng -- Dante -- Rojo------ (De Vrij)
-------Lahm -- Gustavo -- Oscar -- Macherano----- (Wijnaldum, Gago)
    ----------------------------Muller-------------------------------- (Messi)

    OR: 750.
I'm leading my both moneyleagues, so I'd like to play it safe.

Schurrle over Kroos maybe. If he starts.
