Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – Newcastle and Sunderland

The first in our series of articles on rotation pairings for the season ahead got underway yesterday with a look at Stoke and Swansea. Next up, we travel northwards to analyse the prospects offered up by Newcastle and Sunderland:

The Fixtures

The Tyne-Wear duo offer Fantasy managers a home/away partnership over the entirety of the 2014/15 campaign. Although this allows us an option in front of their own fans in all 38 Gameweeks, the first 20 fixtures – which lead us into the winter wildcard – sees Sunderland welcome United, Arsenal, Chelsea and City to the Stadium of Light, whilst Newcastle entertain City, Liverpool and Chelsea, somewhat lessening the appeal of such a rotation pairing.

Essentially, this leaves us with 13 decent home matches in the first 20 Gameweeks (CPL, TOT, HUL, SWA, STO, LEI, EVE, QPR, WHM, SUN, HUL, EVE, BUR) before we can restructure our sides in January – a situation which may persuade some to look for alternatives.

Up until the winter wildcard, Newcastle dovetail nicely with Palace and hand you 16 out of 20 home matches. The Eagles have two tricky home fixtures (Chelsea and Liverpool) over that period but Alan Pardew’s play host to Leicester and QPR in the same Gameweek, offering an excellent alternative.

If you’re keen on investing in Gus Poyet’s side, they could also be partnered with QPR up until the winter wildcard. The two clubs offer 18 out of 20 home matches and when the Black Cats are at home to Arsenal and Chelsea, Harry Redknapp’s side host Villa and Leicester, handing us a stronger option to choose from.

The Defence

Newcastle
The Magpies shipped 28 goals in front of their own fans last term, the fourth worst home defensive record in the top-flight. Pardew’s team registered six clean sheets at St James’ Park, including a shut-out against Chelsea, though conceded two or more on five occasions, including 4-0 losses to Spurs and United, in front of their own fans.

On the road, Newcastle chalked up four clean sheets. Bearing in mind two of these were against Spurs and United, it goes to show how erratic their displays were and highlights just how key a rotation partner will be for those eyeing up the defence.

Between the posts, Tim Krul offers a security of starts for the Tyneside team. The Dutchman finished 30 points clear of any defensive team-mate last term and earned 19 save points from 36 appearances – given his side conceded 59 times in 2013/14, Krul will surely come in at no more than 5.0 again.

With Mathieu Debuchy earmarked for a move to Arsenal, there’s remains uncertainty over the full-back positions for the Magpies. Davide Santon could shift over to the right, affording Paul Dummett or Massadio Haidara the chance to nail down the left-back berth, and whilst the Italian looks nailed-on regardless, his failure to deliver any attacking returns in 27 appearances last term is a real concern. Although Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa could be fielded on the right of the back-four, he failed to start any of the last six games in 2013/14 and, with Pardew unconvinced, may be loaned out this term, according to the local press.

If he can stay fit, Fabricio Coloccini offers the best alternative to Krul amongst Newcastle’s rearguard. In an injury-hit campaign, the Argentine managed just 27 appearances last term – on the positive side, he earned bonus points on six of the eight occasions that he picked up a clean sheet, highlighting his potential.

Sunderland
With Paolo di Canio at the helm, the Black Cats failed to pick up a single clean sheet during the first seven matches of 2013/14. The subsequent installation of Gus Poyet saw Sunderland deliver 11 shut-outs in the remaining 31 fixtures butwith only six of those in front of their own fans, they were a little difficult to predict.

Vito Mannone’s displays between the posts persuaded many to simply play the Italian regardless of fixture difficulty in the season gone by. The former Arsenal man produced save points in 22 of his 29 appearances and with six sets of double figure hauls, supplemented by 16 bonus points, his average of 4.6 points per game was superior to any regular stopper in the league. The arrival of Costel Pantilimon is a little concerning but if Mannone can maintain his role as Poyet’s number one, his appeal is hard to overlook – in terms of ppg, the nearest Sunderland defender averaged 3.2 last term by comparison.

With last season’s full-backs both departed, Poyet has drafted in Billy Jones from West Brom but with five assists to his name over three seasons, he’s likely to remain a peripheral Fantasy figure. Poyet still has plenty of shopping to do but, at present, Mannone – providing he isn’t priced significantly higher than his defensive team-mates – will surely be the one to acquire here.

The Attack

Newcastle
The Magpies mustered a mere 43 goals last term, with Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye leading the way on 16 and seven strikes respectively. Given that both players are now plying their trade elsewhere, Alan Pardew clearly needs to rebuild in the final third and the arrival of Siem de Jong is certainly a step in the right direction. The former Ajax skipper has scored 10+ goals in four of his last five seasons – restricted to 19 appearances last term, he still notched seven times – and looks key to the Tyneside team’s turnaround in fortunes.

Yoan Gouffran chipped in with six goals and five assists last season. Mainly fielded on the flank yet classified as a forward, he could be a potential under the radar option if listed as a midfielder next time around.

Beyond those two, pickings are currently slim. Papiss Cisse is set for months on the sidelines with a broken kneecap, Hatem Ben Arfa seems to be edging closer to the out door, whilst Moussa Sissoko has failed to kick on from an encouraging first half season and netted only three times in 2013/14. Bearing in mind that Newcastle failed to score in 13 of their final 20 league outings, though, it’s fair to say our Fantasy faith in their attack is somewhat limited right now.

Sunderland
In terms of attacking potential, the Wearsiders struggled to deliver for the first few months under Poyet. Sunderland scored in only 11 of the Uruguayan’s first 21 league games but, as the season progressed, they found their form under the new man in charge and netted in nine of the final 10 matches. Indeed, on the road, the turnaround was dramatic – having failed to score in any of their first five away games with Poyet at the helm, they then proceeded to net in all but one of their final 11 road trips.

With 134 points to his name last term, Adam Johnson finished eleventh amongst midfielders, ahead of the likes of Raheem Sterling and Christian Eriksen. Ultimately, eight goals (four at home, four away), six assists and 10 bonus points were decent returns for a mid-price option but the issue with Johnson is a real lack of consistency which severely tests his owners’ patience and make him impossible to bench with any degree of certainty – two assists in the first 14 Gameweeks and a single assist in the final eight fixtures attests to his erratic nature. On the other hand, six goals and a pair of assists in just four matches over the winter period underlines his potential but with attacking returns in just 10 of his 36 appearances, be prepared for him to frustrate.

Connor Wickham’s extraordinary end to the previous campaign is bound to interest a few Fantasy managers. Five goals and a pair of assists in the final six matches, including a 13-point haul at City followed by attacking returns on the road at Chelsea and United, demonstrate his ability to pick up the points in more difficult fixtures. Bearing in mind he managed just 58 points all season as a result of a couple of loan spells, the youngster should still remain relatively budget-friendly and if he continues as the Black Cats’ lone forward, looks a real contender as a cheaper third striker in our Fantasy squads.

With Fabio Borini back at Liverpool, Poyet certainly needs to address his side’s options in the final third. Emmanuel Giaccherini has the potential but bearing in mind he started only one of the club’s league matches from Gameweek 21 onwards, it’s clear that his manager remains unconvinced.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

i'm getting a real stephen ireland 08/09 feeling about ramsey. he's already a real fitness/stamina player and he's simply topping that up on the training pitch while so many of his colleagues and opponents are either just back from brazil or still out there.
ireland was a step ahead of so many that season to the point where so many of his goals were like his lungs scored them rather than superior skill and ability. oviously ramsey exploded last season so it isn't that type of point, but i'm really excited about him in a post world cup season

Depends on Pardew's instructions - if the grumblings coming from Debuchy are sincere then he's been shackled as an attacking force to a large extent. Makes me consider Debuchy at Arsenal all the more on the basis Wenger may let him off the leash a little.

Yes, I am talking about small Architectural/Interior design jobs...

I will liaise with clients, find out what they need etc, draw up my plans/visualisations etc, and if it requires building then I will sub contract the work on to a few builders who I have managed to network...

I plan to be quite hands on for the client and oversee as much as I possibly can... but that is an evolving idea...

Luckily enough, I have some friends that have approached me to design a home office for them and redesign a part of their place of business... plus another project at

If I were you, I would acquire an excellent bookkeeper, before anything else.

Also, you need to build a model of your business on a spreadsheet.

You would do well to get someone to set up and start the bookkeeping and learn how to do it that way. It'll save a lot of pain later.

I work in a place like that where a small company owns a medium sized building and rents out spaces within that building to other small companies. Its the way to go these days.

there was a show on these storage units the other day which showed exactly that sort of thing, small companies run their business out of these storage units, then when they start doing a bit better they buy a surrounding unit/units.
there was even a guy who ran martial arts classes in a slightly bigger storage unit

I've just opened my own company along similar lines (albeit, with 2 others involved), but similar lines to what you're doing.

Quality of work in our game is so important; attention to detail and tight cost control. Our USP is the one-stop-shop for all the professional services and the fact that we we are Engineers who can design sensible living spaces, not Architects who want to design their own little homage!

Word of mouth and referrals are the best form of marketing you'll get.

Here's my website in case you're interested http://www.developyourhome.ie

Best of luck with it mate!

            I like that USP, Icon...

I've had an idea kinda like that bubbling away inside me for a while... with all the years I've spent in hospitality whilst an Uni, I feel I'm suited to a working relationship in front of clients, speaking to them and building rapport etc...

I think my USP to start off with is cost... it costs so much money to consult an Architect in Australia... I've heard that some have charged $7000 just to design a small office space... that is ridiculous imo... so my plan to deliver the same quality but for at a fairly reduced price...

I want to deliver the best possible service at the cheapest cost to the client, and at the same time be a part of the whole process... (not sure how this will pan out exactly yet)

Obviously starting up, the jobs I'll be doing will be smaller in scale, but the idea is the same...

            Thanks

This is the difference between architects and engineers.

Engineers work at just above cost rate as there will always be someone willing to undercut you, and there is very little respect from society for what they do. Cheapest will always be most favourable.

Architects on the other hand have an almost celebrity status, and if you charge a high price then you must be worth it. Whether thats true or not is irrelevant as most clients only want one off projects. There isnt the same repeat custom.

Yeah, we offer our services at a discounted rate than Architects in the same field do - even though we are providing (what we believe) is a far superior service, especially when it comes to budgeting and cost control.

Just be careful to be sure you don't under price as your service may be misconstrued as not being of the right calibre to certain clients. I'd suggest possibly advertising your rates similar to others but then offering a large discount to those rates as your 'initial setup' offer and explain to clients your service is as good if not better than others but that you are looking to build your client base and that you would hope going forward they would recommend you to anyone they know looking for work done in the future

Sounds great, best wishes. I'm in small biz owner myself. Here are some suggestions :

          1. Since you've mentioned small, I'm guessing it will be you + 2 or 3 more people tops , probably assisting you with admin or other vendor type jobs such as visualization/prints etc. Clearly assign and also be clear about expectations in terms of their response times. Maintain great relationships with all vendors and employees so that you can always count on them when there's crisis.

          2. Client management: This is key for you since you're running a small, tight , relationship-based business. Keep them happy, and always keep it competitive for them. Do little things that sometimes even big businesses forget - eg . sending neat, innovative branded gifts for christmas etc. It builds relationships, and gives your brand an identity.

          3. Try to "standardize" your offerings as much as you can, and where you can. Now when I say this , what I mean is you have to sit down, look at your whole offering for different clients, and see what all you can standardize in terms of time , effort and costs. Eg: Arch Design + Visualization for buildings under 1500 sq feet can be 1 standard package option. You will spend x hours giving y design options, and then taking it to the next step of visualization which takes z hrs and so on. You get the picture - it's like putting a standardized process for what you offer. It becomes professional, you have more control on what you do. Essentially, you have clear scope definitions for most of what clients want, clear estimates of costs and time. (Of course, it doesn't imply compromising or standardizing your design or anything)
(Do note what I gave was just an example - I hope you get the drift of where I was going with it)

          4. Have a CORE identity and always build and brand on it. Eg - your core could be that you are THE BEST arch/int designer for quirky designs on a budget perhaps. Or you are the best out there for larger commercial designs. Try to stick to that area when you start out, and gain an identity. Talk the identity on your website/ corp blog.

          5. Have a blog running on your website with your thoughts, opinions on relevant architectural news, approaches used, project progress with some photos etc. Try to be regular (even once or twice a week will do). Also have a social (twitter, FB ) presence and keep it updated /synched. It pays in the long run!

Got more but I figure I might be boring everyone else or stating the obvious!

          Best of luck again!

my dream is to own a sports bar and one possibly make it fpl/fantasy sports themed so you have fpl nights/days when there are groups of premier league matches taking place. if you show a team with the guy who just scored at the ar then you get a certain discount off a drink, if your player gets a red card you get a free sympathy shot.
would be cool if you could get a whole mini league down to spend the afternoon there or something, game on tv, scores and assisters flashing up in the background etc. then the rest of the time it's just a bog standard sports bar, but the fantasy sports thing gives it a usp

Get very active on social media. A business page on Facebook is essential (Twiiter and LinkedIn too). Change the profile pic regularly showing off examples of your work.

But don't have all posts just promoting your business as people quickly become bored with that. vary your posts with, say, interesting links related to the same industry. This way you will become the local "go to" guy for design work etc. if people regard you as knowledgeable they will give you their business.

The more "likes" and people sharing your posts will increase your search engine optimisation too.

      🙂 good luck, exciting times!

I used to share an office with someone who did just that. Getting a big client ( in his case a firm that specialised in conservatories) was key. They provided him with lots of work and he spent the rest of the time building up word of mouth regional clients. It's good to mix and have one regular and lots of other clients.

Are you uk based - if so I recommend setting up as a limited company mainly as self employed status means having to pay tax in advance. That can be a nightmare if you have late payers.

      Good luck with it.

The quick tip I have for how to make sure its profitable. You are essentially the middle man between the builders and client, and on that basis you can afford to charge a 20% fee on all work done by the builders. It also helps if you agree a set of standard prices with the builders such that you can negotiate early with the client about costs without potentially ruining your relationship with the builders.

I also suggest you keep a diary of what you do every day. That way you have a record which can serve as a memory jog when you inevitably realise you forgot something.

The bit you probably know, the client cant always express themselves properly in words when it comes to technical stuff. Have face to face meetings early to make sure you are both on the same page and you know exactly what is required. I heard a story about an architect who was engaged to build an extension. The end result is that he bought the teenage daughter a pair of headphones and the extension was no longer required to seperate the family from the loud music. Not a great result for the architect financially, but a very appreciative client.

This is excellent advice Gink, thanks...

I pride myself on being a great listener... and honest enough to pass up a job like that if a similar situation arose...

When you say, agree a set of prices with the builders, what exactly do you mean?

Would that be more focused on the amount of time the work, or what type of work they're doing?

The way things work in highway maintenance contracts is that the main contractor has a set of prices for all items of works. For instance they can charge £500 to fix a pothole. Some potholes will cost more than others, but over the long run they make money.

I am presuming that there are similiar items for your work. For instance a set cost to install a kitchen cupboard. Or maybe three prices depending on the base cost of the units.

It's just a standard list of agreed rates for common tasks, so if there are any alterations to the design then the costs are easily determined.

    Please RMT...Not Mcds

    Neuer
Zab Lahm Blind (maybe luis for blind?)
kroos muller oscar robben (C) di maria
    Messi Van persie/Hunterlaar

IF masch is a defender in the game is it worth having him over zab?
    Thanks

For FPL, do you decide on your strategies and then find the best players to fit into them OR flex your strategies depending on players / prices?

E.g. for defence, if you like playing two premium defenders every week and rotate one from three cheap ones, do you look for players to fit that mould? Or, if there happen to be a lot of good 'mid-priced' defenders, that don't fit into that strategy, do you abandon your preferred strategy?

For me its definitely dependant on player prices. For instance if DDG was only 5.5m I'd abandon the standard keeper rotation strategy I usually go for and just get some fodder for the bench and start DDG every game.

Yeah, last year for example, I was all set on a keeper rotation strategy but when I saw how cheap Boruc was and Southampton's fixtures (plus the fact I thought they'd be solid) I abandoned that and started with a Boruc / Davis combo!

This season I'd be open to going with 5 budget defenders if the premium defenders all get massive price hike's. Then I'd be happy if 2 or 3 of those defenders end up being solid budget picks which I would have had from GW1.

My personally take is, buy the best players & play 3-4-3. Although I have grown to understand the importance of player rotation, price rises etc...

I play it by ear, but generally like....

      X2 decent defenders, 3 cheapos.

X2 exps mids, one mid priced, then see what I can get.

X2 big hitters up top, then see what I can get 🙂

Mentioned last night, but a small update:

Arsenal have requested a meeting with Atletico Madrid to discuss a possible transfer for Javi Manquillo. The Gunners want the full-back either on loan or in a permanent deal although they face competition from Marseille.
