The Community Round Up

The launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game has already sparked the emergence of the so-called “template team”, with squads made up of a small pool of favoured targets. This has prompted a raft of discussions in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as many search for that little bit of flair to help smash the template. Bonus points, as well as rotation strategies, were also the focus of much chatter and we look back on all these discussions, whilst also bringing up to date with the community leagues on offer:

The Community Articles

There’s little doubt that Billy Gilmore’s detailed look at the tweaked FPL Bonus Point System was amongst the most popular articles posted over the past seven days. In his extraordinary analysis, Billy takes a sample of games from last season to show how the revised BPS would have influenced the bonus point allocation. The results will certainly prove happy reading for those looking to invest in full backs and wingers.

Another issue vexing our community writers this week has been the abundance of choice in the game, with the major teams investing in a raft of new, potentially high scoring, players. The Puntmaster was on hand with an update of his new Premier League player analysis while Parm took a closer look at some key dilemmas such as the dilemma presented by the Arsenal midfield, now bolstered by the significance presence of Alexis Sanchez.

Rotation continues to come under the spotlight among our community scribes, with The Sarjeant being the latest to assess whether home and away rotation or focusing on fixture strength is the best policy for the season ahead. Another slab of essential pre-season reading.

The Hottest Topics

Each year, shortly after the launch of the FPL game, a similar pattern emerges; teams are drafted, template squads emerge and the urgent call for individualism selections turns from a whisper to a full blown battle cry.

Among those calling for the early template to be broken was Portsmouth Bubblejet via this cautionary post warning against following the herd and sticking up for our most maverick of Fantasy managers. Courtois in the Rye was another calling for Fantasy managers to go against the grain with his look at just why the consensus squad is doomed to fail.

Alexis Sanchez is undoubtedly a template favourite that’s already commanded huge ownership across the Fantasy games. At the time of writing he was the most owned player in FPL so far. But, asks Cynical Steve, is he really worth his £10.5m price tag?

At the other end of the scale, Hull’s new midfield recruit, Robert Snodgrass, is a popular target for those adhering to the template. However, according to our man on the Humber Jaizinho, the former Norwich player has a long way to go to justify his selection. Going by his man in the stand account of Hull’s friendly game against North Ferriby this week, Curtis Davies is far more deserving of template status.

A Chelsea defender is another prime asset and already a popular route, thanks, in no small part, to an eye catching set of early fixtures and a strong record of clean sheets under manager Jose Mourinho. The template dissenters arguing against their inclusion include Il Gladiatore, who wonders whether the likes of John Terry are deserving of essential status. Meanwhile, Mr Anonymous questioned whether new full-back Filipe Luis is nailed on to start.

At the time of writing almost a third of those who have registered to play FPL had drafted in £11.5m priced Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, to cement his place in template forward lines. Irish Madrista took up the mantle of front line template buster this week, urging Fantasy managers to ignore expensive strikers and look to cheaper, lesser owned options such as Edin Dzeko or Olivier Giroud.

Promoted sides also offer the chance for Fantasy managers to take a punt. The Sarjeant returned to look at the three promoted sides’ clean sheet potential to put forward a good case for investing in QPR defenders as part of a home and away rotation strategy. He also took time to look at the potential hot prospects up top offered up by the promoted sides.

I even found myself, a renowned “Dullard” when it comes to squad selection, scanning the player list for alternatives to help break from the early favourite targets. My hot topic looked at creating a team focusing mainly on players from the ranks of United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea. This strict focus on title contenders becomes a differential in itself, with few Fantasy managers attempting such a collection. As Innsie pointed out, though, such a tactic would dramatically reduce interest in Burnley v Hull fixture. We can’t possibly have that.

Whether your team can be described as “template” or “maverick”, the FPL does, of course, offer us all a chance to start the selection process all over again thanks to the Wildcard. In our discussion on the best time to use the wildcard Fantasy Genius and Billy Gilmore revealed they plan to lay it down during the first international break of the season at the Gameweek 4 stage – a popular window. However, Moin is determined to cling on to it and use it after January to take advantage of the incoming double Gameweeks.

The Community Tournaments

Not surprisingly, we’re seeing a whole host of community leagues crop up as we head into August. Be sure to drop us a line at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk if you’ve got a league or tournament to plug.

First up this week, Keith Kiely is looking for community members to join his High Flighters FPL league (18100-24576). He is also running a H2H version (18100-90838). Meanwhile, Evilfuk has created a 2006 Veterans League (27-317) in FPL for those who have been playing the game since the 2006/7 season.

In addition, Thomass is running an FPL competition this season. For more details click here.

I am here after 4 days and it seems the tide has firmly turned in Rooney's favor

Has LvG said anything about possible formation or role of Rooney/ RvP?

He played up front with Welbeck. Scored 4 in 2. 2 pens, one a bit lucky, and a long shot.

I didn't think it was possible to fit all of those 4 into the midfield. Others may shun the extreme nature of your team, but I actually kind of like it, though personally I think there's so much more that can be achieved if you downgraded yaya. Bearing in mind though, I am also looking at a 3-5-2 right now.

As Arsenal's summer business draws to a close, we can slowly see the picture of our front six will look like in the first few weeks, bar Walcott.

    ---------Wilshere/new DM-------Ramsey----------
    ----Sanchez-----------Ozil----------Cazorla---------
    -----------------------Giroud-------------------------------

As we can see, there are some real differences from the XI last season, which begs us to answer the important - who will be on set-pieces next season?

    1. Penalties: Last season, Arteta was the numero uno pen taker for us, with Podolski and probably, Ozil, next in the pecking order. Funnily enough, the first two will not be anywhere near first-team material this season. Ozil's famous pen miss against Bayern meant that he was not going to try another soon enough, and well, Wilshere, Ramsey and Cazorla won't be anywhere near pens. So, that leaves us with Sanchez and Giroud. Sanchez has been on pens for his country, and don't think that shootout miss against Brazil changes any of that. Very much expect him to be next to Arteta on the penalty pecking order.

    Pecking order: Arteta, Sanchez, Giroud.

    2. Indirect freekicks: Last season, we saw Ozil involved with most of them, along with Arteta and at times, Ramsey. Sanchez's arrival and Arteta's slow departure means he is going to take over some of them, thus increasing his appeal. Walcott, when he returns, will also assume a lot of them, fair to guess.

    Pecking order: Ozil, Sanchez, Walcott.

    3. Direct freekicks: Walcott was involved with most of Arsenal's direct free kicks in the first part of the season, but in the latter, Ozil, Arteta and Cazorla shared them between themselves. Again, Sanchez is such an important player that he is bound to get invloved (Who can forget that wonderful freekick last year against Elche?). Still, I'd say these are up for grabs, and again, with Arteta and Cazorla not supposed to play week in week out, and Walcott out for the first month, Ozil and Sanchez are the clear winners.

Pecking order: Ozil, Sanchez, Walcott (on return).

So, as we see, Sanchez has the potential to deliver at 10.5, and he has his share of set-pieces to support him. Also, in Arteta's absence, if Wenger decides to give back pens to Ozil (unlikely), he is also going to be a brilliant prospect at just 9.0, being also the clear favorite in direct and indirect set-pieces.

Ramsey? He'll just need more and more of his outstanding output rate to replicate anything of last season. Yeah it is unlikely, but from what we have seen of Ramsey so far, I'd like him to be paired with Flamini or the new DM we sign- Song, Schneiderlin or whoever. He needs the license to get forward, and when he has that, he has the quality to grab 15 a season.

    P.S. - I'm starting the season with Sanchez. 😉

Ramsey has such a good conversion rate because he runs from deep so often that he isn't pressured by defenders as much therefore having more space to manoeuvre a shot in.

Having been at the Plymouth Swansea game yesterday as a neutral being on holiday down there I have to say Siggy is going to be in literally everyones teams but I will get back onto him in a moment.

Swansea's starting XI was strong with Fabianski between the sticks and Shelvey/Ki in the double pivot role. Have to say Shelvey in particular looks essential to how they will play but as an FPL prospect he will only get set pieces if Siggy isn't on the same pitch. I personally can't see them lining with Ki/Shelvey they both seem very similar players and perhaps a more defensive player will partner one. Neil Taylor didn't start the game but nor did Ashley Williams so hard to read too much into that one. Worth noting that Chico came off with an injury but don't think it was too serious.

Second half string of changes made with Siggy having a big impact in the time he was on playing behind Bafetimbi Gomis. Gomis looked very short of fitness and was generally rusty with his touch etc... We did notice Wilfired Bony warming up throughout but he played no part which might be worth monitoring - personally if he doesn't get gametime in the coming friendlies I don't see him starting the season.

Key pointers Siggy is essential, Shelvey is to be avoided, if Ki gets a move he looked lively but in this team he will be deployed too deep to do much. If they go Shelvey and Ki they won't be keeping too many clean sheets imo.

Played as a holding midfielder rather than an advanced role that will be given to Siggy. He will also lose set pieces to Siggy with Siggy only being 0.5 more most are going to go for him over Shelvey

True but Siggy scored a free kick when he came on and his corner led to Jordi Amat's goal. In fairness Shelvey was on them before Siggurdson came on so maybe they will take a few each and I don't mean to write him off completely just as I say of the two Siggurdson is undoubtedly going to score significantly more points at a slightly smaller price point. Can't see many/any doubling up on the two

Well it seemed quite telling that everyone else in the squad that was available played some part bar Gerhard Tremmel and Bony. I'm not sure how many more friendlies they have left but as I say if he isn't involved soon I wouldn't be that surprised to see him start the season on the bench

Great write up. I would argue that Swansea don't need an out and out defensive midfielder. Keeping possession for long periods is a defence in itself. I imagine they haven't lost their possession based football?

Thanks, you could be right about the defensive midfielder situation I'd just worry about them against the better sides. They did dominate possession mainly through Shelvey and Ki both very tidy footballers ironically Siggy has taken all the headlines and rightly so but he was only on the pitch for 30 mins maximum. I was actually very impressed with Shelvey his passing range and accuracy might see him come in to Woy's plans for England one day but as I say that might not be rewarded with Fantasy points

    Foster/Krul
    Jones/Cameron/Wisdom (Coloccini / Neil Taylor)
    Sanchez/Eriksen/Mata/Fabregas (Albrighton)
    Rooney/Dzeko/Remy 0.5 ITB

Why did Remy fail his medical? I quite like him at 7.5m and think QPR could be quite decent with those opening fixtures. I'm not sure on Fabregas, but I think he might be better value than Hazard as I wasn't impressed with Hazard the last half year. The defense is probably too weak so I could downgrade Fabregas to Siggy/Arnautovic and improve on defense..? All suggestions appreciated

Not a bad team. I'm not convinced by Abrighton but then we do seem to have a lack of viable cheap attacking players. Not sure who your 2x4.5 rotation players will be but hopefully they will be nailed on. Also watch out if WBA buy a new full back, it might put Wisdoms place into question.

All valid points. Albrighton is bench fodder anyway. I'm more hopeful about Wisdom than I am Targett who will almost certainly get replaced by Koeman. Wisdom getting squad no. 2 at WBA has given me hope 😉

I agree with you on Wisdom, he's in my team as well but I'll continue to monitor the situation.

As for bench fodder, I don't believe in wasting a position in your team. Sometimes these players are needed when there are short term injuries in your team or certain players getting a sudden rest because of an upcoming champions league game.

True but there is no other player who is sensational at 4.5 or 5, unless I'm missing something?

No you're right. Thats why I'm going with 3 mid priced players and will look to downgrade one to a cheap midfielder once that player reveals themselves as a major budget bandwagon.

Guys on here were saying he would go straight in to their team.... But if Van Der Vaart was to move to QPR... How much would FPL price him at? 6/7m?

He's not the player he used to be. I'd be disappointed with anything north of 6.
