Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

Raheem Sterling is amongst the goals as Liverpool hammer Spurs at the Lane. Andreas Weimann earns a goal and assist as Villa get the better of Hull, while Nikica Jelavic and Leonardo Ulloa grab their second strikes of the season to strengthen our budget forward options. Alexis Sanchez nets for the second match in succession as Arsenal stutter to a draw on the road at Leicester.

Sterling Steers Reds to Victory
The Liverpool youngster bagged his second goal in three appearances as the Reds swept aside Tottenham at the Lane. Fielded behind front two Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli, Sterling – despite failing to pick up bonus in yesterday’s win – has now outscored Sturridge by 22 points to 10 in the opening trio of fixtures and continues to look a real bargain at 8.6 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Owned by over 38% of Fantasy managers prior to yesterday’s match, he looks poised for further investment as the Reds brace themselves for a superb run of upcoming fixtures. Elsewhere in the Liverpool midfield, Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick duties helped the skipper gets his goal account off the mark.

Moreno on the Radar
The new boy atoned for an error against City on Monday with a superb showing against Mauricio Pochettino’s team. With Brendan Rodgers opting for a midfield diamond, the Liverpool full-backs were tasked with supplying the width from deep and Moreno’s raiding runs were a real feature of the Merseysiders’ forward forays. At 5.5 in FPL, he’s owned by just 0.2% of managers ahead of four home fixtures (AVL, EVE, WBA, HUL) and trips to West Ham and QPR in the next six.

Eriksen Hauled Off as Tottenham Toil
The Dane lasted just 58 minutes of yesterday’s encounter before making way for Andros Townsend. Overshadowed by Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela in last week’s win over QPR, Eriksen now approaches the international break with just seven points to his name – given that Mauricio Pochettino afforded Chadli and Lamela the full 90 minutes, the Dane’s owners may well decide enough is enough. With just one shot on target over the full 90 minutes yesterday, the hosts are clearly a work in progress under the Argentine.

Villa Front Two Pick up the Points
After serving up back-to-back clean sheets in the first two Gameweeks, most of the Fantasy interest surrounded Villa’s defence for the visit of Hull. Both Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor picked up a goal apiece in the 2-1 win over the Tigers, with the young Austrian also picking up an assist and maximum bonus points. Having also scored in Gameweek 1, Weimann is now up to third in the FPL forward standing on 22 points, but with showdowns against all of last term’s top five in the next five Gameweeks, few will be looking to invest in Villa right now.

Jelavic Form Continues
It’s two goals in the last couple of Gameweeks for the Hull frontman after he fired the consolation at Villa Park. Jelavic grabbed the opener against Stoke at the KC last weekend and is starting to suggest he could be another budget frontman worth our consideration – with West Ham, Newcastle and Palace in the next four, the short-term schedule is in his favour.

Sanchez Strikes Again
Having struck the midweek winner against Besiktas, the Chilean was in the goals once again for the Gunners. Handed a role on the left with Yaya Sanogo leading the line, Sanchez is clearly a class act capable of serving up the points, though at 10.4 to Aaron Ramsey’s 9.1, it’s difficult to currently justify the switch until the summer signing reaches full match sharpness. With City, Spurs and Chelsea in the next four, though, few will be looking to invest further in the Gunners until the schedule eases in Gameweek 8.

Ulloa’s Home Comforts
Leicester’s summer signing netted for the second match in succession at the King Power Stadium as Nigel Pearson’s side picked up an invaluable point against the Gunners. Ulloa also struck in the Gameweek 1 home draw with Everton, and while strike partner David Nugent continues to struggle, the Argentine has wasted no time in settling in the top-flight. At 5.5, Ulloa is another budget striker making a mockery of his price tag and has shown he’s more than capable of delivering against some of the most resilient backlines around. It’s also worth noting that Jeffrey Schlupp – a 4.5-priced defender – started on the left wing and provided the assist for Ulloa’s header.

LOL @Arsenal fans. #Desperate. I even feel sorry for them. Arsenal could be well known as my second club in PL by likelihood, but stubbornest of Wenger is off the chart. Sanogo? Really? Sanogo as half season striker? WOW

its a sad state of affairs. Sanogo just isn't good enough, so much money spent on other positions, yet he refuses to buy in the most obvious problem position. Also, I wish we'd taken Fab back and dumped Ozil TBH.

People who get Falcao will regret it because before they know it bad fixtures will come and they have done bad enough in good fixtures, and all these new players will have no understanding. I will happily stick to Aguero and Costa as my frontline.

So how is LvG going to fit RVP, Mata, AdM, Falcao and Rooney all into one team? I'm guessing the simple answer is he won't.

    I guess they could go:

    -----RVP--Falcao-----
    Mata--Rooney--Maria
    ---------Herrera--------

But that'd be incredible attacking. More likely play another player with Herrera in a double pivot and Falcao and RVP rotate maybe?

How do you guys think they'll set up? And how do you guys think this'll effect the FPL returns of Rooney and Mata.

So who drops out. I can't imagine LVG dropping RVP, but I don't really see how they get two out and out CFs in. So does Falcao play outside the CF position, or do they rotate, or do they play two CFs? And if so, how does the rest of the team arrange around them?

I've seen very little of Falcao actually playing so I don't know anything. But Ted Knutson (eminent stats guy) is unimpressed with him. He said this about him earlier in the summer:

"Falcao started to fall off last season, even before the move to Monaco. A lot of his goalscoring was boosted by penalties. Strip those out and you have a good, but nowhere near great goalscorer. Add in age curve and the significant injury he suffered last season, cross that with already inflated transfer fees and wages, and you have a potential poison pill."

Obviously, stats chaps have a certain outlook on things that's skewed towards the measurable and they tend to disregard things that can't be measured, for example the ability to make space for other players.

What say you? Is Ted ignoring Falcao's less measurable traits? Does it even matter for Fantasy if he gets given penalties at United?

He was no doubt an unbelievable player, but I can't see him being worth the investment at all

      - Playing for Man UTD
      - Been out for ages with injury
      - age plus playing at Monaco hasn't really impressed.

I suppose the issue is how he fits into this league.

I would look at underlying stats an awful lot and I would understand what he is saying. I have a feeling though that the issue is he didn't really have enough time to fully get into Ligue 1, especially with injury etc.

I suppose look at it like Costa. Is he physically built for the PL (which I think Ted is forgetting) and I would say yes, he has the build to be able to deal with increased physicality much like Costa. He's not a creator at all, he is an out and out goal hound but I think that's needed if LVG pushes to Rooney, Falcao, ADM up front.

The injury is the risky factor but with that said everyone on here claims that Walcott is "straight into their team" despite having suffered a similar injury. So it's hard to know, some players come back from them and some don't. Falcao seems to have a lot of drive so hopefully he does but that certainly is the big risk.

Don't get the age curve bit, 28 is typically seen as "seasoned striker" and is usually a good thing.

this is what makes me upset...wenger spewing all this nonsense of champions league this, champions league that, but at the end of the day we get knocked out at the round of 16 every season and don't get any real advantage in the transfer market 😕

Rafael Jones *new cb* Rojo Shaw
    -------Herrera Blind Di Maria

    Blind should become Vidal also

No. He doesn't fit in to any system that involves Di Maria and two strikers whilst still being solid defensively

    De Gea
    Rafael - Jones - Rojo - Shaw
    Blind - Herrera
Di Maria - Mata - Januzaj
    Falcao

This would be an excellent, well balanced team but I can't see LvG ditching the 352 or dropping Rooney.

      i like this

see my line up just above yours to not drop Rooney and keep the 5-3-2

    Begovic, Gilks
    Debuchy, Dier, Clyne, PVA, Kelly
    Ramsey, Sterling, Eriksen, Siggy, Marney
    Costa, Rooney, Jovetic

    1FT, 1.3 in bank

    Save FT this week?

    - Would like to ship Rooney & Kelly but both have good fixtures this week
    - Already suffered price drop on Eriksen
    - Just got Jovetic in so may give him a little more time

Great signing for United. But it's a real shame they already had two world class strikers and now have two world class strikers with glass legs.

Big lols, because trying to get sport to help to stop the world's population from killing each other is far less important than buying yet another player you don't really need.
