Scout Scribbles – Di Maria Dominates in Dusseldorf

Angel di Maria grabs a goal and a trio of assists as Argentina avenge their World Cup Final defeat against Germany. Erik Lamela, Sergio Aguero and Andre Schurrle all find the net in a six-goal thriller, while Wayne Rooney slots home a spot-kick as England squeeze past Norway.

DI MARIA STEALS THE SHOW FOR ARGENTINA

Manchester United’s record signing Angel di Maria assisted three goals and bagged a fourth as his side ran out 4-2 winners against World Cup winners Germany in their own backyard last night. The former Real Madrid midfielder provided the crosses for Sergio Aguero, Erik Lamela and Federico Fernandez (newly of Swansea) to put the visitors 3-0 ahead, before adding a fourth for his side early in the second half with a dinked finish. Post-match, Argentina coach Gerardo Martino had high praise for his star man:

“Di Maria is one of the best four or five players in the world and so his performance didn’t surprise me.”

The Scout Says: Man United fans will have been purring at last night’s performance from Di Maria, who showed exactly why Louis Van Gaal’s out-of-form side broke the English club transfer fee record for the Argentine’s services. Fielded on the right wing in yesterday’s international friendly, the midfielder turned in a timely advertisement for his services to Fantasy managers, demonstrating his skill, vision, ability from set pieces and finishing in an all-round display of quality. Available for 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Di Maria looks an integral cog in Van Gaal’s fresh looking United side, though his positioning alongside Darren Fletcher in the centre of the park against Burnley last weekend somewhat dampened our enthusiasm. Nevertheless, it is far from certain that this will remain his chosen role, nor whether Van Gaal will even stick with his 3-4-1-2 formation, having failed to win single match so far this season, ensuring that Di Maria’s Fantasy potential still remains in the category of ‘wait and see’. One thing, however, is for sure – after Di Maria proved last night that he has the quality to tear apart a World Cup winning side, Harry Redknapp will be straight to the drawing board to figure out how his QPR team can cope with the £59.7million man in two Sundays’ time.

SWIFT IMPACT FROM AGUERO ONCE AGAIN

Sergio Aguero’s goal for Argentina came in just the 20th minute of last night’s match, and was the third time the striker has hit the back of the net within 25 minutes of taking to the field this season.

The Scout Says: Whilst last night’s goal further highlights the appeal of the Manchester City forward even in spite of his hefty 12.1 price tag, owners of Aguero will be mainly thankful that the injury-prone Argentine made it through the game unscathed. Having been eased into the campaign thus far by Manuel Pellegrini, a two week break would probably have been ideal for Aguero right now, though last night’s run out did actually turn out to be beneficial for the striker, who can now rest up ahead of his next league fixture. With tough fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea up next for City, however, Aguero has his work cut out in demonstrating why he’s worth shelling out the substantial extra slice of budget over team-mate Stefan Jovetic, though his lively start to the season signals that he’s set to do just that.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL GOAL FOR LAMELA

Erik Lamela vindicated Martino’s decision to offer him the opportunity of a starting role by striking his first goal for the Albicelestes just before half time against the Germans.

The Scout Says: With Cristian Eriksen sitting on a disappointing seven points after Spurs’ three opening matches of the campaign, and Nacer Chadli still well and truly in the ‘differential’ category, Lamela strengthened his position as Tottenham’s midfield asset of choice last night with a sumptuously taken volley. Two assists against QPR in Gameweek 2 underlined his creative talents, and if he can also bring his finishing ability from last night into his league performances, the 8.0 priced Lamela could be set to plunder the points against Sunderland, West Brom and Southampton in the next four Gameweeks.

SCHURRLE OFFERS CONSOLATION FOR GERMANY

Andre Schurrle was one of the few members of the home side to leave the field with something to show for his efforts yesterday. The Chelsea midfielder continued his World Cup form by scoring one his side’s consolation goals against the South Americans.

The Scout Says: A goal against Burnley in Chelsea’s opening fixture of the season saw Schurrle race on to our radars, despite the German still recovering from his exertions in Brazil in the summer. However, the midfielder only lasted 63 minutes on the pitch the following week, and then watched on as an unused sub in his side’s 6-3 rout of Everton last weekend, and has subsequently fallen far in our estimations. Whilst the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard are available in FPL for 9.3 and 10.0 respectively, the 7.5 priced Schurrle could offer managers a budget route into Chelsea’s midfield should he convince Jose Mourinho that he is worthy of a regular starting role, and last night’s goal will certainly help his cause. With Swansea and Aston Villa visiting Stamford Bridge in the next three Gameweeks, and Eden Hazard and Oscar currently considered a doubts for next Saturday’s fixture for the Blues, Schurrle may indeed be offered further chances to regain the faith of Mourinho and Fantasy managers alike.

ROONEY NOTCHES FROM THE SPOT

Wayne Rooney’s first appearance as captain of England’s national side in their friendly against Norway proved a cheerful occasion. The Man United forward secured a 1-0 win for his side by slotting home a second half penalty after Raheem Sterling was brought down in the box.

The Scout Says: Last night’s goal will have given Rooney a real confidence boost after the striker failed to contribute in either of his last two appearances in a United shirt. The 10.5 priced man has already been sold by over 200,000 managers in FPL this week, with a straight swap to Old Trafford’s latest arrival Radamel Falcao the most popular route out, but Louis Van Gaal’s plans for his club captain are yet to be ascertained once he has a fully fit squad to choose from. A deeper role is seen as the most likely scenario, though it won’t be until United’s home clash with QPR until we are any the wiser.

FOSTER SUFFERS THUMB INJURY

Ben Foster withdrew from England’s squad yesterday just prior to their friendly victory, and will now be unavailable for his national side’s Euro 2016 Qualifier against Switzerland on Monday. West Brom have, however, stated that the thumb injury sustained by their first choice goalkeeper ‘is not a serious problem’.

The Scout Says: With testing encounters against Everton and Tottenham up next for West Brom, the Midlands outfit will be keen to have Foster fully fit and available between the sticks. The same applies for his 4% ownership in FPL, who will be hopeful that the Baggies can repeat the defensive performance that saw them pick up a clean sheet at Southampton two weeks ago if they are to pick up any returns from those fixtures. Nonetheless, with clashes against Liverpool and Man United then on the horizon for Alan Irvine’s side, and Foster now classified as a doubt, investment in any of the Baggies’ assets currently looks unadvisable.

      Tadic

      - better fixtures
      - less injury prone
      - no threat of rotation
      - similar set piece duties to Mirallas

      Mirallas
      - more potential to explode
      - team will score more goals
      - more exciting to own/watch

      I'd go with Tadic

Not for a -4 but possibly for a FT. He'd have to score two goals / assists to make it worthwhile.

How is Tadic looking so far for the Saints? Koeman seems to have a solid squad on his hand, and decent run of fixtures to get some wins on the board.

I've read that Tadic can slot into his favoured #10 role after signing Mame. Who does Tadic replace in the middle, and is he very much like Coutinho in terms of fantasy output? Or more like Eriksen of last season given his set piece hogging.

Sadibo Mane plays primarily on the left so the talk is that tadic will be moved centrally. If this happens, should help his goal threat massively.

Davis/Wanyama .......Davis could drop back into Centre Mid and Wanyama on bench, or vice versa. Saying that Davis can also play on the right which would see JWP drop to bench. Have to factor long in as well, although he's been benched last couple.

Hi stats are great and has still had a decent number of shots playing on the left. If he moves centrally I expect him to be involved in most of the attacks saints put together. I'm strongly thinking of taking a punt on him. If it doesn't work out then I'll sure there'll be plenty of other options to switch to.

I have Aguero, Costa, Di Maria, Hazard, Ramsey as my big hitters though. Rest of the squad is fairly strong. With no fillers. Cheapest mid is Downing 5.5 and cheapest striker is Naismith 5.5

Yea I don't see why that's not a good trade but really depends on where Di Maria plays. Though I think he will do well, looks to have settled in pretty quick against Burnley. He's got a good football brain which always helps.

I would pick Naismith and downgrade Mirallas, but don't go with nothing in the bank - should have plans to upgrade Naismith quickly when his form fizzles out.

It's always tempting to leap in for a headline transfer, but it's better to wait. WCing this week is all about making money, and with totalfpl knackered, and the reworked fpl transfer thresholds, have made that much harder.

Taking it slow is the way to go.

Opinions on this team please - WC used so unlimited transfers.

    Green
    Jones Wilson N.Taylor
    Di Maria Fabregas Sterling Siggy
    Costa Sturridge Welbeck

    Subs: Krul, Dyer, Wisom, Duff

ITB: 0.6m for Sturridge -> Aguero

I dont like my Welbeck pick tbh. Dont think he will score, might downgrade and improve defence ?

Wouldn't go with Jones. Not only can united not defend he's so injury prone that I will guarantee you an injury in next 3.

      I like the Welbeck pick

I would not take out Sturridge, I'm thinking about bring him in my team. If you look at the Liverpools next fixtures, Sturridge is up against the slowest defenders. (Vlaar and Senderos) (Reid(fast) and Collins) (Jagielka and Distin) ( Ferdinand and Caulker(decent pace)). Sterling will also be a massive help stretching the defense of other teams.

    - Play Krul and get rid of Green = 0.5 ITB
    - Upgrade Wisdom to Moreno
    - Keep Sturridge and Welbeck

    Balotelli vs Sturridge

Who looked more threatening in front of goal against Spurs? Is it the case that Sturridge doing bit of Suarez work & dropping deep or to Wing at times?

Balotelli should have had 3. Sturridge worked harder. Both greedy. It would be a toss-up but at the moment Balotelli more likely to be subbed earlier, so Sturridge.

I think that could be reversed for this coming week. Sturridge is the main man so he's more likely to get subbed off due to being UCL week.

Good observation but just see Balotelli coming off earlier as he looks to continue his fitness build up. You see it so often, a player coming in with no pre-season training (with their new team) subbed for the first 3-4 matches at the 60-70 minute mark.

Balotelli had 3 chances. Sturridge had a few shots, 2 of which were on the receiving end from Balotelli's pass. Balotelli will also be on a lot of freekicks. Sturridge will score more goals over the course of the season imo. But Balotelli seems a good option at the minute.

Between the 3 of them (Studge, Balo and Sterling) there's movement all over the attacking third looking at the thermal images from the spurs game (Look here: http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/matchcentre/tottenham-hotspur-vs-liverpool-31082014/#divHeatmap)
Balotelli had more of the chances but if you look at it from an FPL point of view Sterling is hands down the better option than either of them at the moment

without a doubt - that's why i started the season with Sterling over Sturridge. Based on just how we played in pre season (irregardless of goals), he was just ripping defences to shreds. Fearless and confident.

TOMASJJFinding it hard to choose players from city. Rotation at fullback. Uncertaincy up front. Aguero injury prone. Expensive midfield options and other midfielders seem better options. How do you work around these issues? What do you think?

No uncertainty over Aguero at the moment if you don't own him now you never will this season. One of Jovetic/Dzeko will always partner him remains to be seen which is the better option this season but given their respective prices they are pretty good options. Yaya has yet to hit the ground running and Silva's too hit and miss for me rest of midfield isn't worth worrying about. Kompany will always be a sure starter if its cleanies your looking for would expect Clichy and Zaba to be first choice full backs again when it all settles

The fact that not one scientist has been able to explain how or why the big bang occured, is enough evidence to suggest that someone actually caused it.

Until they can prove that, a devine creator is the only answer.

nobody said it wasnt. All i said was creator which means something that created it. It could look or be anything.

You have just contradicted yourself my friend. Thanks very much 🙂

but surely you can flip that around, the fact that not one scientist has been able to explain how or where the devine creator comes from is enough evidence to suggest that he might not exist at all.

all a bit pointless really, we all have our own opinions, nobody knows

Would you do a -8 by selling Silva & buying Di Maria.

Will give me a midfield of - Ramsey, Sterling, Fabregas, Siggy & Di Maria.

No, never -4 unless you have injuries and worry about a 0 point haul imo.
      To -8 is crazy.
Get him in over a few weeks, even if di maria scores if would could for nothing because of your -8 so transfer him in over 2 weeks and silva is good enough to get points in that time ,

Keeping Eriksen (sun/WBA) and Rooney (QPR/lei) for the next two then a free double trade Eriksen > ? and Rooney > Costa after city away.
    Sound?

I don't think you can skimp on your three forwards. It's the highest points scoring part of the game and those that go cheap here tend to lose out.

just played around a bit with the auto complete function and here is the team I got:

    Lloris/McGregor
    Clyne/Ivan/Moreno/Dier/Shawcross
    Fab/Sterling/Dyer/Siggy/Ramsey
    Weimann/Costa/Naismith

    1.0 ITB

Actually not THAT bad but of course I would not go with this...

I have that but then I am a +40 years Chelski fan.....my opinion is that Chelski will score a lot of goals this season but they could be spread around a bit....so maybe for goals try to pick the top three most likely golden boots.....without Suarez no obvious stand-out choices and too many unproven PL high priced mids.....or in teams not performing so if Chelski stop scoring goals may change Fabs or Haz in run up to Xmas for :

Lamela....only if Tottenham shape up can change and strengthen back line
Di Maria......seems obvious choice but needs to prove he can turn around Manu season

Other than that Arsenal & Liverpool already covered with Ramsey and Sterling + Siggy

  25. Fader
    • 10 Years

I'm tempted to take out Ramsey and Jovetic and replace with Lamela and Welbeck plus I'll have 2.1m in the bank for the defense and a team consisting of :

    Krul
    Ivanovic - Clyne - Dummett
    Fabregas - Lamela - Siggy - Sterling
    Aguero - Welbeck - Costa

    good idea or bad?

would you take a -12 for this?

        Krul
        Ivanovic - Moreno - Clyne
        Fabregas - Lamela - Siggy - Sterling
        Aguero - Welbeck - Costa

        0.5m in the bank

Nope. Just read SAFs autobio. He makes a point that clubs need to buy a player when he's 24 to get 3-4 years of optimum performance out of him.
