Scout Scribbles – Sturridge Injury Fears Rise

Daniel Sturridge seems poised to miss out for Liverpool this weekend according to the Merseyside press. Emmanuel Adebayor is in the goals for Togo, Southampton’s new boy Sadio Mane strikes again for Senegal, Wilfried Bony faces a late return to training after international duties, whilst Geoff Cameron is sidelined after undergoing hernia surgery for Stoke.

STURRIDGE INJURY CONCERNS MOUNT

Reports suggest that Daniel Sturridge could be sidelined for two to three weeks with the thigh injury he sustained in training whilst on international duty with England last week.

The Scout Says: Whilst there is still no official word from Liverpool on the matter, the fact that over 114,000 managers have already chosen to offload Sturridge this Gameweek suggests that is a mere technicality for some. The proposed absence would see Sturridge miss Saturday evening’s clash with Aston Villa and next weekend’s trip to West Ham, and leave the striker in a race to be fit for the Merseyside derby at the end of the month. In contrast to the England man, team-mate Mario Balotelli has received plenty of investment leading up to this weekend’s deadline, and confirmation of Sturridge’s absence could spark a massive bandwagon and see that investment increase pointedly. Given a chance to play in his preferred role through the middle, Balotelli could find his feet at his new club quicker than expected, though Brendan Rogers does have another alternative to consider – Rickie Lambert, yet to start for Liverpool since his summer move, is a ready-made replacement for Sturridge as a centre forward, and, if given the opportunity, the 7.2 priced target man could prove a canny short-term acquisition for Fantasy managers whilst his team-mate recovers.

ADEBAYOR’S GOAL NOT ENOUGH FOR TOGO

Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor scored his side’s second goal in their 3-2 loss to Ghana yesterday evening in their second African Cup of Nations qualifying match. The striker pulled his side level in the 77th minute with a powerful header, only for Everton’s Christian Atsu to score a late winner for Ghana and leave Togo winless in their two games thus far.

The Scout Says: Last night’s result shines favourably on Adebayor’s Fantasy potential in more ways than one. Not only will his goal give him some momentum heading into this weekend’s trip to Sunderland with Spurs, but the fact that Togo have now lost both their opening games means there is already a good chance they won’t qualify for ACoN, which, subsequently, would mean that Adebayor won’t go AWOL in January. With home encounters against West Brom and Southampton to come in Spurs’ next four, and the likes of Stevan Jovetic and Romelu Lukaku currently injury doubts going into this Gameweek, the 8.6-priced Adebayor is one of the few forwards in his price range to have any real allure right now, and the Tottenham man will be keen to spark a return to form for his side this weekend after their heavy defeat at the hands of Liverpool last time out.

MANE ON THE GOAL TRAIL

Southampton’s deadline day signing Sadio Mane scored his second goal of the international break as his Senegal side ran out 2-0 victors over Botswana in their ACoN qualifier.

The Scout Says: Mane is now firmly on our radars as the Saints face a quintet of kind fixtures, including four at home, in their next six (NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO) that offer the midfielder a great chance of building on his current form. At 7.0, the winger is more budget friendly than fellow new boys Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle (both 7.5) and his direct style on the left wing could bring a new dynamic to Ronald Koeman’s side in the coming weeks as they look to add another win to their tally after Gameweek 3’s 3-1 triumph against West Ham. One to monitor for sure.

Bony Set for Late Return to Training

Wilfried Bony is not expected to return to training with Swansea until Friday due to his commitments with Ivory Coast, meaning that Bafetimbi Gomis may be handed his first league start for Swans in this Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.

The Scout Says: Can Garry Monk really do without his first choice striker for the visit of Stamford Bridge? Whilst the Swans boss has previously underlined his faith in Gomis’ ability, and his intention to give the Frenchman plenty of football this season, an away match against Jose Mourinho’s men will hardly have been what Monk would have had in mind. That said, Bony has hardly lived up to his 8.5 price tag so far this season, with not one goal or assist to his name after three appearances, and were Gomis to grab his chance on Saturday afternoon, he may well edge ahead of his teammate in Monk’s thoughts for Gameweek 5’s clash with Southampton.

SURGEY REQUIRED FOR CAMERON

USA international Geoff Cameron finally underwent a hernia operation yesterday after being plagued by the problem since the back end of last season and is now due to miss at least another fortnight of action for Stoke. The Potters did receive some positive news, however, after it was confirmed that Stephen Ireland and Oussama Assaidi are stepping up their recoveries from injury – assistant manager Mark Bowen clarified why Stoke have been cautious with Assaidi since his deadline day loan move from Liverpool:

“He’s been training all week and looked good. We are taking things easy with him because he hasn’t had a pre-season. But everything we’ve thrown at him in training he has come through.”

The Scout Says: With Cameron now definitely sidelined for the near future, Phil Bardsley looks nailed on at right-back for the Potters. The former Sunderland man demonstrated his potential for attacking returns with an assist in Gameweek 2 and could prove a decent differential in light of Stoke’s superb upcoming fixtures (LEI, qpr, NEW, sun, SWA). The imminent return of Ireland and Assaidi, meanwhile, looks set to up the competition for places further up the field, though Mark Hughes seems likely to stick with the starting XI that walked away from the Etihad with a shock victory last time out for this Saturday’s encounter with Leicester, meaning that the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Bojan Krkic may have to make do with bench-warming duties once again.

Aguero + Welbz looks better long term but Balo + Ade looks worth a punt for the next 2-3, easily switchable to the former after.

All Wenger's comments on Welbeck.. a lot of positives.. especially the playing through the middle part:

“It’s not difficult to include him, though. It’s not in a position where you need a lot of coordinated work, tactical work. It’s up front. It’s a position where you can play free and go for it.

“I think I prefer him through the middle. When you analyse his game you think he has the qualities to play there.

“At Manchester United you had many big stars and he is a player who is very versatile, so he had to make room sometimes for players to play through the middle.

“But if you analyse in an objective way his qualities, I think he has the perfect style to play through the middle.

“And his finishing? He has been questioned about that, but the second goal for England gives you a good answer.”

“I cannot tell you whether Welbeck will start today because I have to assess who will be available, who is fully fit,” he said. “Some players have not played for a while and it’s a possibility."

When asked if he was surprised that United let Welbeck leave for the Emirates, Wenger said: “Look, we sold van Persie to Manchester United, so that’s a reciprocity.

He added: “I thought that when they bought Falcao, they had to let somebody go.

“It was quick because it was the last day of the transfer window but I had no hesitation to do it."

Am I the only one not bothered by stats? Maybe because I am not a member and don't get to see shot accuracy, touches in the box etc but surely the only stats that matter are clean sheets, assists and goals.

I always bring up Andros Townsend as my reason for thinking stats like these are meaningless, has dozens of shots a game but very little actual goals or assists where as in last seasons case Ramsey or Yaya only needed one shot a game for a goal.

Which brings me to Naismith and Welbeck. Two players who previously I thought were a bit poop. Both roughly have a career premier league average of a goal every 3 full 90 minute games. I really don't care about shot accuracy or shots in the box ratios surely the only stat that is meaningful is Naismith has 3 goals in 3 games and Welbeck 0 goals in 2 short sub appearances.

Just reading that Welbeck has a better shot conversion rate than Sturridge but I would be very surprised if Welbeck can score 11 goals in 14 games like Sturridge did when he arrived at Liverpool

Maybe you were looking at the wrong stats, Townsend had about 10 shots a game and in average 9 of them hit row z. 1 on average hit row P-S

I agree to an extent but some of the stats are more important than others, like 'big chances', 'penalty area touches'.

There will always be players like Townsend who will just be shit regardless of the stats tho

I don't know what cabella's stats are but after watching him I can tell he doesn't have his shooting boots on. Cabella will soon be worthy of whatever stats he has

You can always find exceptions and outliers (and if you can find them reliably then you're laughing in this game). Yaya was one of them, Ramsey was not. You'll notice that Yaya has yet to score this year though.

But overall, stats are very good at predicting goals. Andros Townshend's stats were not good if you looked a little deeper than raw numbers - his shots were always from distance, which tends not to bring lots of goals. Ditto Taarabt. If you look at the overall stats from a season, you'll find that the order of players with most shots inside the box is very close to the list of players with most goals. Not perfect, but close. It's about getting probability on your side.

But you can't look at stats in isolation. You have to use them in tandem with watching the games for the immeasurables. Use stats to sanity check your gut impressions, and use your gut to sanity check what the stats are saying.

You can use the stats to try to tell who has performed better than expected and who is likely to start picking up the points soon.
It's the way that you interpret the stats that counts.
Dyer has scored 3 goals and has had 3 shots all season.
Does that mean that Dyer is a clinical finisher who will score loads this season if given opportunities or does it mean that he's been very lucky with his shots so far and he is unlikely to be a consistent points scorer?

Stats are a great way to get a clearer indication of form, whether a player has been lucky or unlucky. A player cannot continue to be lucky or unlucky forever. If you want to play the percentages, its important to know the stats.

Pens are really tempting and he's the nailed on main man at a new-look Spurs. Just feels "safer" than Welbeck and I'm worried I'm making too many problems long-term the lower I go in 3rd striker price bracket (think Aguero when fixtures clear up).

Can you afford Costa, Aguero, ADe when Citeh's fixtures clear up, though? It's one reason why I'm tempted with Welbeck - frees up some cash...

That's a good question, I hadn't really thought about it like that. Rooney -> Aguero makes a lot of sense if he does indeed end up in a more withdrawn role (seems likely).

With that thinking, Welbeck seems a better option 😮

Yeah, exactly my thinking. Rooney looks definitely likely to be the man to switch to Aguero. Then again, Rooney -> Falcao could also be decent, and you only need 0.6m in the bank for that...

Yeah. Adebayor would leave it impossible for me to do that as well, with Welbeck I have every opportunity to assess Falcao and Aguero and get either one.

Think Aguero-Costa-Welbz will be the strikeforce to have soon but just not sure if it's too soon now. Same reason I'm considering Ade + Balo in my WC and then switch to the others later on.

That could be true, I think Aguero will be near-essential once their fixtures clear up as long as he can stay fit... food for thought, thanks.

Yeah, Adebayor's a good bet. I think I'm gonna go for Pelle, though. Then again, I can't afford Adebayor anyway 🙂

Yeah, for me it's Pelle, Ade or Welbeck, main targets. I like Pelle, but pens are swaying me to Ade. If you can't afford Ade I think Pelle is a good shout, seems to be nailed on and stats are very good.

He will be assessed today. No reason to think he is out until the reports indicate he is (from his fitness test).

    Though wenger also said this

"If I had not been away on deadline day, Welbeck would not have signed. That's the truth,

Which has led to a war on the arsenal forums.. apparently he wanted a loan deal and the owners went behind his back and bought him is the rumor 😯

Sounds like nonsense. He just said he thought he was available only on loan and so didn't want him but as soon as he found out it was a permanent transfer then he signed him up.
