Monitor – Morgan Schneiderlin

Arsenal and Tottenham were both rebuffed in their attempts to sign Southampton’s World Cup star Morgan Schneiderlin this summer and hanging on to the French midfielder has proven crucial to the Saints’ ascent under new boss Ronald Koeman.

The 10.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers who have backed Schneiderlin have seen a phenomenal return from the central midfielder, who has chalked up 29 points in his last three appearances, courtesy of a trio of goals and four bonus points.

In our next members’ article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess Schneiderlin’s progress from the previous campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

For the unfamiliar, these KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

By comparing this season to last, we should be able to get an indication as to how he will be utilised in Koeman’s new-look side and determine whether his high points return so far could be sustainable. By also referencing the Comparison Tool and season totals, we get a better indication as to how he fared:

Dzeko and possibly Debuchy out for a hit.

Defence is Clyne, Moore, Chester and Ferd so it needs help.

          Pelle is the simple option.
Welbeck & Adebayor are more complicated.

I took a ghastly 12 point hit. It's done now and I admit I will prob not even get 8 points of it back. However it means I am willing to take a punt.

Stick with risky Baines(c) or revert to Costa(c)?

Has anyone seen Van Anholt play yet this season? He's got some great attacking stats for a 4.5 def... like a poor mans Baines in many ways. I'd like to know if the numbers matchup to the "eye test" of actually creating good chances rather than just "chances"...

He's looked pretty good going forward by my eye, only seen two Sunderland matches so far though. He's certainly the best Sunderland defender to own in my opinion but that is hardly saying much. Sunderland haven't been so tight and scrappy like they were last season in trying to eek out a point in each match. Poyet seems to be trying to get them to push the tempo and play more positive football which is not ideal for clean sheets when their talent level is not top notch compared to their opponents usually. He's one to only play when they have a bright fixture, his attacking returns aren't consistent enough to play him when they have an iffy matchup.

      1. rickardinho
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 9 months ago

Yeah thats the perception I get from looking at his returns and stats so far too.

1 assist in 4 games, 2YC's and only 8 points, with no CS's is a poor return. His underlying attacking stats are good though.

Sunderland have 3-4 good fixtures next though so if ever there was a time to get him it would be now. Probably a pass from me though. I'm looking at the 5.0-6.0 bracket for a Caulker upgrade next week, though unfortunately I'm having to lower my expectation as there are no stand-out options above Moreno at 5.6 until one reaches Baines, and I only have 6.0 to spend maximum.

so Costa can't play 2 games a week?that means rotation. this week Jose made the league the priority for him but may not do that next time round. thats a big negative on an increasingly expensive player, especially when you consider that Roo/Falcau only have the league to worry about

Next time they play Sporting and Maribor. Surely Remy and/or Drogba will be playing those games while Costa plays the more important and tougher league games?

but drawing tonight puts those games in a different light and Drogba looked very rusty. Remy could easily do a job in the league for their easier fixtures. I dunno, its worrying!

He said he cannot play 2 games a week at the moment. We assume he will be needed this weekend as it is such a big game, probably dropped for the league cup game. He will be getting better over this period. The Villa game may be a concern as it is so close to the game v Sporting

He had returns of over 5 points per 90 last season on average... Even if that drops down to around 3.5-4 after factoring in sub appearances its still a damn good return on a defender. Even better when you consider you'd bench him yourself for the tough fixtures and get points from another defender instead when he blanks.

Then go get him. Let us know how much fun it is when you have him in your lineup and he doesn't start but Pelle subs him on for the last five minutes of a game as he also loves to do 🙂

Yeah that seems to be the issue. 21 starts and 9 subs appearances.

It seems to be relatively straightforward to predict which games he might be a sub for though, judging by last seasons sub appearances... apart from 3-4 games the whole season it was quite easy to see which games he'd be a problem:

            at West ham
            at chelsea
            home swansea
            home palace
            at spurs
            at norwich
            home west brom
            at hull
            at everton

along with benched in games against united, liverpool and arsenal.

Btw I'm not saying I'm gonna get him, I'm just trying to rationalize why I'd want to have him versus not having him.

There aren't many great options in the price in between Moreno and Baines really, but thats where I'm shopping.

So you're playing Chambers ahead of Clyne (I have both) Would you play Duff (home to sunderland) over either of those two?

I'm playing caulker-chambers-lovren this weekend, with clyne-wisdom as subs.

Duff vs Chambers is a tough one, but I'd play him over clyne for sure. 1 goal against in 330odd minutes is pretty great.

              Duff.

CS against Palace and United, 1 against Swansea, and CS 2nd half vs Chelsea.

              90x3 + 45 = 315 + time since chelsea's 3rd + injury time = about 330

I guess that's technically true, but that's a strange and maybe misleading way to look at it. I could counter by saying he conceded 3 in 17 minutes lol.

I'm just playing devil's advocate, Burnley seem reasonably solid, but I think it's a lot fairer to present stats as a whole. So, he's conceded 4 in 360 😀

sure, but they won't be playing chelsea again anytime soon.

i could counter and say that the 17 minutes were a blip in an otherwise solid trend

Probably not. I think so far the unsellables in mid are siggy, Ramsey and Fab, ADM added to those 3 is may the optimum midfield but one game v QPR does not prove it.

Possibly. Man U fixtures are good, and Rambo less expensive so you can always go back. ADM seems more likely to rise in price, although nobody can be sure.

In terms of the Ironman contest, with all five formats now in play, Gigging Order leads, with me in second, Epic's lead in Europe sees him overtake Anorak into third and JWF pulls just in front of Granville into fifth. Those two are neck and neck with only one UCL point, one GSC goal and ten FPL points between them. DFD still trails, but his strong start in UCL puts him right back in contention, just 40 Ironman points behind Granville.

Provisional squad: Howard, Coleman, Distin, Jagielka, Baines, Hibbert, Barry, McCarthy, McGeady, Mirallas, Naismith, Lukaku, Robles, Stones, Alcaraz, Gibson, Osman, Besic, Pienaar, Eto'o.

Everton: Howard; Coleman, Distin, Jagielka, Baines; Barry, McCarthy; Mirallas, Naismith, McGeady; Lukaku

they will rest a few though imo...

Just got this from "the internet":

      Howard;
      Coleman, Distin, Jagielka, Baines;
      Barry, McCarthy; Mirallas, Naismith, McGeady;
      Lukaku

God I hope that is inaccurate. Martinez needs to take a page out of Spurs book and learn how to play his second team in Europe. Can't win 'em all with the squad he's got.

Villa have only conceded 1 goal so far this season. Not many saw that coming at the start. What do you think of Arsenals prospects when they visit?

Just waiting for the other shoe to drop with Villa. They along with Swansea are the shockers of the league early doors. I still think their team is complete rubbish and I can't believe they have done so well. They have to get smashed by one of these clubs the next couple fixtures I'd guess..but jeez they have been putting up some results.

Villa have conceded a grand total of ZERO clear chances so far. Impressive.

Will be tough for Arsenal if Villa set up the same way they did against Liverpool. They usually do better away from home though because of their countering style.
