The Scout Mission – Gameweek 7

Much of our attention is focused up front ahead of the upcoming Gameweek. Diego Costa’s minutes, Sergio Aguero’s showing at Villa and United’s display without their suspended skipper are amongst our lunchtime topics, whilst we also have an eye on Sam Allardyce’s attacking approach and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s display against the Magpies.

The Cost of Costa’s Midweek Minutes…
A week on from Jose Mourinho insisting that his star asset was unable to test his hamstring with midweek starts, he hands Diego Costa 90 minutes against Sporting. While “the special one” has Loic Remy at his disposal, it’s almost unthinkable that Costa will not take to the pitch against Arsenal on Sunday – somewhat casting doubt over the validity of Mourinho’s claims.

We can only imagine that Jose has been hoping that Costa will be handed a much-needed rest by his national side over the break, though given that the striker has since confirmed he intends to play for his country, that now seems highly unlikely. Costa’s Fantasy owners will be confused and concerned then – either Mourinho is using kidology in an attempt to throw a smokescreen over his post-Champions League line-ups, or Costa genuinely will struggle to start or at least complete Sunday’s clash. The striker’s midweek comments lend weight to the former, though, boosting our hopes of another goal haul in spite of his manager’s mind games.

United without Rooney…
Louis van Gaal’s line-up won’t be the same without Wayne Rooney, particularly with Everton in town – it’s always spicier with the added ingredient of the former Toffee. However, there’s a swell of opinion that feels that United may well benefit from Rooney’s absence – that Juan Mata may just earn a recall and thrive back in the number 10 role and hand Van Gaal a headache. The United boss will hope that his side can adapt but, equally, you have to wonder if he’s slightly concerned about the prospect of United adapting rather too well and Mata returning with a trio of performances that make him almost indispensable on Rooney’s return. I just wonder if he’ll avoid that scenario by handing Adnan Junazaj minutes, or even use this opportunity to shift to 3-5-2 and throw Angel Di Maria into a central attacking role.

Sigurdsson in slumber…
Swansea’s Icelandic playmaker became essential over the opening Gameweeks and yet he’s now gone three outings without returns as Garry Monk’s side struggle for a cutting edge. It’s fair to say that the statistics are concerning – Sigurdsson has had just two shots in his last three Gameweeks, both from outside the box, with just three touches in the opponents’ box. During that spell, only Burnley have been more impotent as an attacking force in terms of goal attempts. We’re going to need to see a vast improvement from Garry Monk’s side when troubled Newcastle pay visit. If they toil for goals and Sigurdsson returns a fourth consecutive blank, then the fidgeting on the 41%-owned midfielder will surely increase.

Just how many Saints?
With Graziano Pelle’s bandwagon picking up pace, both full-backs contributing goals and attacking verve and Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane offering potential from midfield, it’s fair to say that the Southampton ranks offer a rich array of Fantasy talent. Many Fantasy managers will go into their weekend trip to White Hart Lane possessing two of Ronald Koeman’s squad. Should they pass the Tottenham test, however, there’s every reason to increase that allocation ahead of a quartet of fixtures that screams further returns. We’ll be monitoring Mane’s performance, in particular.

The Aguero option…
Rooney’s suspension, Daniel Sturridge’s continuous injury problems and the lack of goals for Radamel Falcao to this point has brought the lure of Sergio Aguero into focus. His manager openly admits that the Argentine is still short of full fitness – withdrawn in the win at Hull and Tuesday’s Champions League stalemate with Roma, Manuel Pellegrini is being watchful of Aguero’s pitch time. Fantasy managers who take the plunge with the 12.1-priced asset will also be wary of delicate hamstrings that threaten to de-rail the striker at every turn. Even so, Aguero is undoubtedly a rarity – a striker who can potentially deliver a goal per appearance and with the record to prove it. He’s also the spearhead in a City side seemingly hell-bent on attacking football with the fixtures to prise open the floodgates. With just over 10% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League, Aguero is your explosive differential. Show some sparks at Villa and our interest will pique.

Will Allardyce rein it in?
So far Teddy Sheringham’s influence has been apparent – the Hammers have transformed themselves from a team who set out to stifle opponents to one that bristles with creativity and threat. Even Stewart Downing has emerged as a true Fantasy asset again; a measure of just how far they’ve come.

Sam Allardyce isn’t comfortable, however. He’s stated this week that his side must look to start shutting up shop and making clean sheets a priority, and with QPR the visitors to the Boleyn Ground, I just wonder if we’ll immediately see West Ham take a step back towards the dull but largely robust unit we saw last season. I really hope not.

Not only is Downing a prospect, but in Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia, Allardyce has two strikers who offer goal threat, pace and direct running that can excite a crowd. They’re good to watch and producing Fantasy points – Saturday will tell us if the West Ham boss is willing to keep it that way.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

And now moving on to the customary 'After entertaining you all with a lovely quiz, can I please get some advice? :D'

As posted earlier today, this is my final WC team. How would you rate it on a scale of 1-10?

    Fabianski/Begovic
    Baines Ivanovic Clyne (Duff Moore)
    Fabregas Sterling Siggy Tadic (Boyd)
    Costa Welbeck Pelle

    2.2 in the bank

    Thanks for your time,gentlemen. 😀

I feel baines and Ivano is too much. Would get rid of ivano for a cheaply and upgrade wellbeck to Aguero

Thanks for the suggestion, not going to change this now though. Welbeck offers great value, and will match Aguero in the next game weeks (barring this one) hence I've chosen that route.

Welbeck and Pelle are the best two options right now imo. Aguero isn't going to score 55% more than Welbeck to justify an extra 5.0 outlay on him.

While I agree Aguero isn't currently worth 12M - that's not exactly how it works.

Agree 100%. Welbeck is worth 10 million in truth. Absolute bargain at that price.

Insane that you get that many big hitters in defence/GK and still manage to have 2.2 itb, however I would be a little worried about the lack of City attackers and I'm not entirely sold on Tadic.

That's the advantage that Welbeck brings, gives me so many more options. 🙂

I have enough in the bank to do Tadic to Silva or Fabregas to Yaya if need be

This. Pelle and Welbeck/Ulloa frees up an incredible amount of cash that offers flexibility elsewhere in the team.

Well that looks like a fail-proof team to me.

      - 2 great keepers with good rotation
      - 3 big hitter def's who are almost fixture proof
      - Solid midfield
      - awesome forward line

I would be tempted to have Downing in there for Boyd for a couple of weeks to take advantage of his great next 2 fixtures - benching tadic at spurs, and siggy at stoke.

      9.5/10

I'm not sold on Ivanovic until GW12 either. His price should come down somewhat by then due to people doing Ivanovic>Baines in the next few weeks, and his fixtures are tricky.

Thanks a lot Rick, as always! 😀

But you do know, that I hate leaving attacking points on the bench. It's a marathon not a race, I'll want to keep that balance in the long term hence I'm not too tempted to get Downing.

I'm actually thinking of doubling up on Alexis and Welbeck and making the Fab to Alexis move next week. Will assess the situation this week though.

Having a bench performer picking up points and hence increasing his value is a nice bonus.

I earned 0.3 from having Naismith in my team for 3 GW's even if I only played him once. Better investment than having money sitting in the bank 😉

              Think of it this way:

If Fabregas slips down the stairs on Sunday morning an twists his ankle, you're left with Boyd coming in off the bench to replace him, when you could have had Downing at QPR instead. Its all about limiting risk, and I don't see why you wouldn't with money itb to cover yourself for that eventuality.

Players have become sick on gameday before... like Sanchez last week for example! 😉

To be honest, I might take Boyd against that leaky Leicester defense!

I agree but I want to spend the majority of my budget on my first team, and the bench can have some decent, nailed on players

As an aguero owner, I think he's too expensive. Will play an average of 70 minutes per game. Needs to consistently do so well in those 70 minutes to justify his price. Will likely switch to Welbeck gw8.

Pelle and Welbeck (and Ulloa) all represent far better value than Aguero. Sturridge could come into the picture, but even if he starts scoring I still think Welbeck at 4m less will score enough to justify having him instead.

As I said above, spend 1.1 of that on Downing. You'll still have half of it left itb, while having a more reliable 5th mid who has amazing fixtures upcoming and is a bps magnet in his team. It also means you have a good 1st sub incase someone gets injured, as right now your bench of Boyd-Moore-Duff doesn't inspire confidence in an emergency.

See my reply above mate, how about a Fab to Alexis move next week? Or even in my WC team? 😯

Fab>Sanchez costs 1.1 (or less if Fab rises this week and Sanchez falls again, as expected), so doing Boyd>Downing doesn't keep you from that move 😉

I'm being uber critical btw, your team is ace, very similar to what I aspire mine to be in 2-3 weeks in fact. Once I am able to invest my 6.8itb (without hits) in the next 2-3 gw's I'll have an almost identical team 😀

Thanks a lot for your time, but you know, I prefer long term balance over short term punts 😀

Would you make the move this week? I would be very uncomfortable having both double Soton and Arsenal attack against Tot and Che away 🙁

I would do exactly as you've planned. Fabregas at home against Arsenal will probably outscore any Arsenal player imo. Sanchez (or even Walcott) would make a lot of sense gw8-11 though.

The MNF analysis of Arsenal on set pieces was particularly damning for them. I think there's a set piece goal or two to come from Chelsea this weekend, and who will be there with the set piece assist?... 😉

And the goal? *drools thinking about Ivan goal Fab assist* 😀

Is there absolutely any other improvement you would make? Apart from the Downing move which I'm not too keen on? 😉

Haha, would prefer the standard Fab>Costa route again this week as I'm captaining Costa 😉

There's not anything important I can think of really, other than these things (that you've no doubt thought about)

                      - Would Duff ever play (i.e. would he ever rotate in for Clyne?) If not then you could downgrade him to 4.0 to save 0.2.
                      - Does Moore cover Clyne's bad fixtures? (he does this week so I assume you've thought of that). Might want to have a look at Wisdom or Hutton's rotations too.
                      - If you find yourself needing cash down the line for Sturridge or Aguero for example you may regret having 5.0 invested in your 2nd keeper. There's plenty of solid 4.5 options out there. I'm not sure who I would go for though as I haven't looked at rotation options (since I'm not looking to replace Krul as 2nd keeper atm)

                        I'm captaining Costa too! 😀

I've checked it out on the ticker. My plan is to play Ivan and Baines every week. Duff and Moore perfectly cover Clyne's fixtures! Both are nailed, which is why I've gone with them. I bought Duff @4.1 so that really isn't an issue.

I don't think any other keepers are worth it.
-Scezesny/Mannone look good but with Ospina around Chesney might be dropped.
-Forster/Fabianski is very good as well, better than Bego/Fabianski actually but I for that I'd have to ditch Clyne for Chambers. Clyne is much more attacking than Chambers hence I've not gone down that route!

Makes sense with the defenders then.

Regarding GK's I was thinking Guzan and Foster. You have the cash though, and its hard to argue against an extra 0.5 if you get Swansea's GK.

Its definitely worth having Fabianski if you don't have other cover from Taylor for example. Its a good defense to invest in either way.

I'll up my team rating to 9.8 now for you, with the last 0.2 being earned if you accept my Downing proposal 😉

                        Don't trust WBA/AVL to be honest, I'm a wealthy man! 😀

Btw, if I opt for Fabianski/Forster over Fabianski/Bego, I can get this team with you in the bank

                        Fabianski/Forster*
                        Baines Ivanovic Chambers* (Duff Moore)
                        Fabregas Sterling Siggy Alexis* (Boyd)
                        Costa Welbeck Pelle

Basically it is a toss up b/w,

                        A) Forster + Chambers + Alexis
                        OR
                        B) Bego + Clyne + Tadic + 2.2

You have convinced me about Fabianski. Agreed.

B wins that one all day imo.

                        - Equal GK points
                        - Higher Def points
                        - 100% nailed on mid playing ahead of Pelle most games vs Sanchez who gets rotated a bit.

Forster is such a limiter compared to Begovic, due to the 3 SOU cap.

Was thinking the same, really want to keep Clyne having bought him in at initial price. Triple Arsenal (Alexis,Chambers,Welbeck) might be overkill too.

Thanks a lot Arvin, really appreciate your advice. Siggy's fixtures are too good to miss out on now though, and I would want to assess Lampard. Fab to Alexis is the one I'm seriously considering this week, though. 😀 (although I would hate to own double Arsenal and Soton attack this week!)

Yes, I went with both in the end. I was tearing my hair out all week in deciding which one to go with, but then went with the Welbeck route which allowed me to get both, comfortably with some decent cash in the bank too! 😀

Ivan has been producing consistently throughout, and has been playing supporting striker with Costa, especially in the home games. Too good to miss out on,imo. Baines has some decent stats too, just behind Ivan in chances created but will probably come good with the fixtures to follow

Think that just means that Moreno will play most of the easier games coming up due to his better attacking output if anything. Nabbing ivanovic makes sense though.

Fab>ADM you will feel better with United Cover
Duff >Chambers I would 100% do ignore the silly 1 game suspension coming good fixtures coming
8/10 if you do those moves 9/10

I don't think ADM is worth that much to be honest, doesn't have the potential to score enough goals to justify his price.

I did think of getting Chambers but I think he would be a waste, because I won't be playing him at all with that defense. Better off saving the cash and spending elsewhere, if need be! 🙂

I have considered having the same defence and attack as you. It all comes down to wether aguero is worth 5 mil more than welbeck and what with his injury record i dont think he is.

Hmm, of the two I would probably bench Bertrand as Clyne (imho) looked threatening more often than Bertrand last week, despite Bertrand getting the goal.

On the other hand, the Swansea vs Southampton game I thought Bertrand looked more threatening so maybe it depends more on who they're facing on respective flanks and who they've got playing in front of them..

Need to transfer Chester out, I have 5.1 to spend.

Aguero is a huge differential for me in my mini-league, should I captain him over Costa or will the differential be enough?

          Hi All,

I need to replace Rooney and Mirallas (for a hit). Il have 19.8 million in the bank if i replace those 2.
          So im thinking

          A) Dzeko , Di Maria
          B) Aguero , Tadic/Chadli/Schneiderlin
          C) Falcao , Sterling
          D) Your pick.

Please help me choose the best option. You advise would be really helpful
I already have Pelle and Costa as my other two strikers. In midfield I have Fabregas, Sigurdsson and Sanchez.
