This Much We Know – Gameweek 7

Our Monday lunchtime look at the Gameweek gone by has plenty of topics to consider. Tactical switches from Hull and Leicester, Tottenham and West Ham’s defences, the pitch time of City’s strikers and Villa’s returning Belgian are all on this afternoon’s menu.

Cisse may just keep Pardew in a job…
Four goals in just 151 minutes’ action underlines the importance of Papiss Cisse to the Newcastle cause. In his first start of the season, the Senegal striker grabbed a second double in three appearances to help snatch a draw at Swansea and appease the away support – bearing in mind the Magpies have only scored seven times, Cisse’s return to action looks vital to not only his side’s prospects but his manager’s chances of remaining in the hot seat. Alan Pardew dropped new boys Emmanuel Riviere and Remy Cabella to the bench at the Liberty and sculpted his attack around Cisse – at 5.9, he may yet arrive back on our radars if he can steer clear of the treatment room.

Aguero’s pitch time is becoming increasingly assured…
Despite played 86 minutes against Roma in midweek, the Argentine lasted from start to finish against Villa on Saturday. Edin Dzeko, by comparison, was subbed off around the hour mark in both matches, whilst fit-again Stevan Jovetic was afforded no more than a six-minute cameo against the Italians last Wednesday. Finally up to full fitness, Aguero looks to be providing a new level of assurance ahead of a strong run of fixtures, with Manuel Pellegrini keen to allow him as much time on the pitch as possible right now – as evidenced by his 88th minute strike at Villa Park.

Bruce is looking to tighten up…
A return to 3-5-2 steadied the ship as Hull registered a first win and first clean sheet since the opening day of the season. Steve Bruce’s side had leaked 10 goals in the four matches prior to Saturday’s win over Palace but it was somewhat telling that, with a very tricky schedule to follow, The Tigers boss was keen to instill a little more resilience to his brittle backline. Hull now face Arsenal, Liverpool, Southampton, Spurs, United and Everton in six of their next seven matches – a run of fixtures that surely no Fantasy manager will be willing to back – but it’s clear that if they are to prevail, Bruce needs to permanently ditch that four-man backline.

Wisdom’s place may be under threat…
Unavailable for the trip to parent club Liverpool, the Baggies loanee will be hoping he can reclaim his starting berth next time around. Despite the 2-1 loss at Anfield, though, Alan Irvine was full of praise for Cristian Gamboa’s performance at right-back after the Costa Rican was finally handed a first league start since arriving in the summer. Owned by almost 12% of FPL managers, Wisdom has quickly become the cut-price fifth defender of choice but his minutes may well be diminished if Irvine affords the impressive Gamboa another place in his XI.

Poyet could have found his formula…
Prior to the weekend win over Stoke, the Black Cats boss discussed the need to find a winning combination after his side failed to triumph in the first six rounds of fixtures. Adam Johnson and Jack Rodwell were the man to make way as Connor Wickham shifted to the flank in order to accommodate Steven Fletcher as the lone striker – the latter pair grabbed three goals between them to finally get the Wearsiders’ season up and running. If Poyet can keep both players fit and firing, they looks essential to his side’s prospects of survival.

Schlupp benefits from Pearson’s reshuffle…
A switch to 4-4-2 afforded the Leicester defender the chance to impress on the left of midfield against Burnley. Dropped from the XI in the previous two Gameweeks as The Foxes opted for a 4-3-3, Schlupp staked a claim as a potential out of position option by netting in the 2-2 draw. Granted, with a single clean sheet all season, investing in Leicester for clean sheets alone doesn’t seem likely to bring in the points but if he can carry that goal threat forward, Schlupp has the upcoming fixtures to prosper.

Tottenham’s rearguard is key to their prospects…
Having de-railed the Southampton bandwagon, Mauricio Pochettino’s side turned in a steely display that suggests their defence is one to monitor. Granted, a trip to City is enough to ensure we steer clear for now but from Gameweek 9 onwards, the north London club are set for an excellent run of fixtures that could easily reap reward. Whilst the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor continues to toil up top, turning to Spurs’ backline may be the safest route when the fixtures clear and skipper Younes Kaboul, at just 5.0, looks the way to go here.

Tomkins is becoming increasingly influential for Big Sam…
The centre-half grabbed his second assist of the season yesterday as the Hammers comfortably swept aside QPR. Tomkins’ aerial ability from set-pieces is continuing to serve up the points, with Stewart Downing’s dead-ball delivery creating chances aplenty for Big Sam’s side. With a first clean sheet of the campaign also accrued, Tomkins is the man most likely to benefit from returns at both ends of the pitch for the ever-improving Upton Park outfit.

Benteke’s return looks timely for Villa…
It’s now three matches without a goal for Paul Lambert’s side as the early-season form quickly tails off. Bearing in mind they’ve just played Arsenal, Chelsea and City, though, it’s perhaps understandable, but the midlands outfit badly lack a presence in the box – Benteke’s introduction off the bench against City could hardly have come at a more crucial time, then. With back-to-back encounters against Everton and QPR’s shaky defences, Paul Lambert will surely be tempted to throw his star striker on from the start at Goodison in two weeks’ time.

The big hitters are starting to shore up in defence…
It wasn’t just Spurs that impressed at the back, though. City restricted Villa to a single shot on target, whilst Chelsea went one better at home to Arsenal, with the Gunners failing to trouble Thibaut Courtois or replacement Petr Cech over the entire 90 minutes. Jose Mourinho’s side have now served up back-to-back clean sheets and are starting to find a balance at both ends of the pitch – whilst it’s early days yet, the premium defences are showing signs of solidity, suggesting that extra outlay at the back could well be worth considering.

    Best trade for this week?

Boyd -> Chadli (have to bench one of Chadli, Pelle or Siggy every week)
Wisdom -> Bertrand (desperately need some defender upgrades!)
Sterling -> Sanchez (like the differential)
Pelle -> Welbz (seems wrong with SOT fixtures)

Or somehow try and crowbar Baines in?

      I like Sterling > Sanchez.

Go with your gut. People will tell you not to do it because of Sterling's ownership. But he badly needs a rest and if he doesn't get it for England, he'll more than likely get it afterwards. Remember, one blank and everything changes. You don't get far doing what everybody else does.

Get Sanchez in. But don't do it just yet.

Welbeck is also a good shout. As it stands he's my captain if nothing changes.

Kompany I picked because he is nailed and does chip in with the odd goal. At the time I could have gone Mangala but didn't and got lucky as he scored an own goal. In future I may drop for Mangala I just want to make sure he is playing every week.

Feel like this team has good balance.

    Thoughts on...

Bringing Baines in when Everton have had a habit of being poor following Europa League games.
To ship Ulloa out (got Costa / Pelle), or stick as he has some decent games coming up

2 FTs and 3.9 in the til.

Other than Ivanovic so far, I don't think any premium defender is worth it. They only have to concede one goal and they're scoring the same if not worse than the budget options. Unless they are getting attacking returns on a regular basis, they're not worth the money IMO. The money is far better spent on premium mids and attackers. Who you can rely on more for points.

Ulloa was a great option going into this GW, one blank doesn't change anything. Patience.

I'm thinking Baines is also worth his price though that's the thing.

I don't think he is unless he is getting attacking returns virtually everyweek.

They have the worst defence in the league don't they?

So you kind of need attacking returns from Baines to justify it.

OK it looked good against Man United. But that game has gone.

If they concede one goal and he doesn't get attacking returns, he's scoring the same as any other 4.5/4.0 defender. Waste of budget IMO.

But another way of looking at it is classing him as a midfielder with any CS points a nice bonus.

He's on penalties and is whipping some serious amount of crosses in and assisting.

    Changes over the break?

    Bego
    Ivan - Clyne - Pieters - Naylor - Moore
    Fab - Sterling - Siggy - ADM - Boyd
    Costa - Pelle - Welbeck

    2.7m in bank, 2 FTs.

    1. Should my priority be getting Kun in for Pelle? That would involve swapping Ivan -> 5.5 defender.

    2. Should I be looking to replace Pieters? Best move at present looks like Pieters -> Baines. But then I might bank the 2nd transfer and save it to use to downgrade Bego and Ivan next week to get Kun.

    1 or 2?

Leicester's Schlupp is classed as a defender but apparently used to be a striker and has played really far forward.

Have Henderson and Sterling, need to drop one to accommodate Baines.

    Have to keep Sterling, right?

I'd have thought so, although I do worry he'll end up being rotated too much....

For sure mate. It comes down to if you think Sturridge will have bigger impact on Hendo's assist output or takeaway from Sterling's goal threat. Could also obviously multiply Sterling's hauls & Liverpool could win the CL

Chadli is clearly a superb value purchase but getting rid of Sterling/ADM/Siggy/Fabs is no easy decision.

Boyd > Chadli leaves the chin scratching decision of which inform player in a front 8 to bench.

Boyd--->Chadli could be a good move if you decide to play with Costa/Agouero/4,4

The question is if chadli is better value ftom Welbeck or Pelle

It's very difficult to make a case that Chadli will score more points than someone like Welbeck (main striker for one of the best teams in the league). Chadli is on a good run, but fantasy football is littered with players who had little bursts of form and did nothing forever after.

It's also littered with players we failed to get in early enough who just kept going...

That's why the only way to play the game is to judge players on what they're likely to do going forward, rather than chasing last week's points. I can't see much argument to think Chadli will score more than Welbeck. If you can then go for it.

I'm with you on that. Welbeck will score more than Chadli. But what will happen when Walcott is back? Can we be sure that welbeck will start?

But Siggy has a terrible run of fixtures soon so Chadli is the way out of having to sell him. 5 mids will be a god send then.

Would benching Siggy ever be wise? Even for City away (hardest fixture left), I'd play him

Fair enough if you are gonna play him through the rough patch.

That'd be a good point to switch, but then right after Siggy VsX (10,11,12) he has a nice run while Chad has EVE & mci accordingly

It's something I'm thinking about. Rotating Chadli, Siggy and maybe even Pelle. Tricky calls but at their price they're going to have down days

It's a good dilemma to have, yet points will be sitting there every GW. The midfield apart from AdM have all great fixtures also, yet he seems to be fixture proof as of late.

Guessing you don't have the Kun, risky mate.

      Don't copy my midfield!

Playing with a 5 man midfield is a good idea imo but the only downside is you won't be able to have 3 good strikers.

3rd striker will have to be a cheap one who can be selected based on form and that's what I've been trying to do on my team.

After winter break is when teams have multiple/no games at all? Is that correct?

Yes...That's when you sell Lallana and Snodgrass for DGW players or play your WC and watch as your original team scores more pts than your DGW team.....who don't actually play two games...

I'm not sure long term applies here. Pelle is the way to go for the next 4, Welbeck is also good for a while but not when Giroud returns. Baines is stronger than Kompany, so that probably sways it

Great minds, yet it feels premature. It could be Yaya's godsend, but I'm going give him one more week vs TOT. It's him vs Wally for me.

Already waited, first Newcastle forward to score this season. Could turn the team around & might be the go to cheap target man of a t8 team. Has two hard fixtures (eve,LIV), but those are just the type of defenses he could shake down on the counter.
Might prove himself after those games.
