Monitor – Raheem Sterling

The season could barely have started brighter for Raheem Sterling after the youngster grabbed two goals and an assist in the opening three Gameweeks for Liverpool. With Daniel Sturridge sidelined ever since, however, Sterling has struggled to replicate his early form, scoring just once and earning a pair of assists in the subsequent six Gameweeks.

Despite a weekend showdown against Newcastle on his agenda, Sterling is the most sold player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with over 65,000 owners parting company in order to acquire the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Dusan Tadic and Cesc Fabregas.

In our second members article of the week, we take a look at his displays with and without Sturridge on the park in order to ascertain just why he’s failed to deliver.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Baines has had an incredible start to the season. The fixtures were tough to start with for Everton but he has still managed to deliver excellent returns.

Already on 1 goal and 6 assists. Whereas he manged 5 assists in the whole of last season.

Looks like he's is in for a big season as the fixtures look bright going forward.

    Is Baines 'essential' then?

    1. Mull
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

No. Baines can run really cold for months at a time and Everton don't look too good at the back.

He compensates the lack of CS by attacking returns.

Everton has had a rough start. The fixtures look good now and maybe CS will also start to come.

'Essential' means you HAVE to have him... in other words, the only way you can win FPL is by having Baines in your side... I don't think that's the case.

            • 11 Years

He has achieved that status atm imo.

If a 7m forward would have returned 51 points by now, you'd be raving about him, wouldn't you? And he would also be labelled as a 'bargain'.

So why not Baines when he has the added CS potential?

Like I said... he's a very effective weapon, not knocking him one bit. But you asked if he was essential... and I'm saying he isn't, because a manager could still win FPL without owning him. We aren't going to agree on the essential side... so we'll just agree Baines is a great FPL player (just not an essential one) haha!

            Spot on.

I had my reservations about him at the start. But I'm fully convinced now. He's been consistent this season and things on the Cs front can only get better. Not to mention he's a BAPS magnet as well.

He'll probably get double figures once (twice if lucky) before Jan, but you could put in a cheapie who'll accumulate 2's and 3's and match that, imo.

Had the same thought at the start of the season but gave up in GW5

I'm doing well in mini league so I'm keeping him in at the moment... but he's running out of lives! I have Aguero as well so I'm wanting them both to score and assist each other but it's all Aguero at the moment, unfortunately

I have no clue what to do now re strikers....currently have:
    Aguero - class
Pelle - on fire and good next few fixtures
    Welbeck - BUR next

    And then there's

Costa - essential before his injury and QPR next

    Options...talk to me....

    A. PVA / Pelle > Chambers / Costa (c) - the original plan

    B. PVA / AdM > Baines / Hazard (c) - but then can't get Costa again without losing Aguero, hits or a WC

    C. PVA / Aguero > Chambers / Costa - crazy talk right? Right??

    D. Sterling / Welbeck > Tadic / Costa (could add PVA > Chambers for -4)

    E. AdM / Welbeck > Ramsey (or Tadic) / Costa (ditto re -4 option)

    Thanks 🙂

I think with those 3 strikers we just have to go without Costa this week. Yes he could explode but so could any of the other 3. I'm personally against losing ADM as well so I don't really like any of those options tbh!

Good point. Although I think their attack is going to mostly be their full backs overlapping and drilling the ball across the box to Aguero. I think Lampard is in for a goal or two if he starts.

Well if you sold Costa and did not have a quick route back to him, you were asking for it. I don't get why managers sell players who are FPL gold, spread the money around the team then decide they want that sold player back in one GW.

As a non Costa owner im going Siggi to Hazard , rather than Sanchez reasons being

    1) More chelsea cover to counteract lack of Costa
    2) Longer fantasy pedigree
    3) More nailed on and you know what your getting. With Sanchez, he will be played in different positions with different personel, may even be rested for some league games before champ league.
Ramsey, Walcott etc will all change things, while Chelsea you know what your getting
    4) Easier to fit in
    5) Penalties

Do you see Hazard picking up form here on out? He doesn't seem to be cutting inside and shooting as much as last season, so goals will probably only come from Chelsea winning PKs (which he'll probably have to win himself anyway). Meanwhile Fab is sweeping up the assists as well

        Thoughts?

I am leaning towards a solution of drafting in Sanchez for Sterling this week, make him captain, and find a way to get in Costa for Welbeck during the next couple of gameweeks. Scrificing Baines most likely. It would be criminal to drop Pelle on current form, and I am not comfortable covering Chelsea with hazard instead of Costa, alongside Fabregas. Chelsea offensive shape is different this season with Costa included. It is not given that Hazard will return the same as last year.

People that think of Baines as a midfielder with the possibility of clean sheet, do you play him as a midfielder also in a 4-3-3? Since he is so expensive, it can become difficult to get a solid midfield and attack with baines in the team, but if you count him as a midfielder it would make sense to have 2 cheap midfielders in the team instead of 1 and play 4-3-3?

This week is a brain buster - I sold Costa for Kun last week (sigh). Anyhow, I want him back in my life but absolutely have to lose one of these big boys to do it.

Who would you choose to make way for Costa:??

    A) Fab
    B) Di Maria
    C) Baines
    D) Kun

Its my order of preference atm (Chadli would come in for Mid and Welbeck would go)

I feel this a choice is one a lot of FPLers will have to make soonish and Costa v QPR could be a massacre.
