KPI Analysis – Defenders, Last Four Gameweeks

Having previously assessed the form of forwards and midfielders across the last four Gameweeks, our third Key Performance Indicator (KPI) article of the international break casts an eye over the defenders.

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables use a series of key stats to allow our members to track a trend in player performance as a guide to their form. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics, such as minutes per chance, and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain patterns of improvement or decline in these areas. For those unfamiliar, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

Looking into December I could have about 8.5m to play with for a mid. It was going to be possibly sterling, but with Sturridge out I may hold out on that. City have amazing fixtures coming up. Anyones thoughts on a Nasri punt? Will he solidify a place in the team by then or reckon he's a massive rotation risk round then anyways?

He's gotta show some form first. But if he does, he could be a nice little differential similar to how he turned up towards the very end of last season.

True. Gotta have form but does hlook like he could be a nice little spark to add to my mids if the like s of Chadli and Downing peter out

Hmm, have you found out if Nasri is more effective against teams with tall or short fullbacks? Because Southampton's fullbacks are short but Sunderland might play Vergini who is a lot taller and heavier than the average fullback.

That price range for mids is definitely interesting, w/ Wally, Sterling,Oscar & co all could show some signs of life by then.

That said, Sterling could yet be of use on our teams if BR opts for a partnership up top (i.e Borini/Lambert + Balo) & it could very well open up pockets for Sterling later on.
I think Nasri is just too risky for the time being & his competitive price tag just sways me away for an odd goal from him.

Even if he's glued-on the team, is there much FPL potential in him. He would have some tough competition & I'd say it'd be a bold move in any case to opt for him. Would rather Wally at that bracket for an Asrenal double up, at least Wally will likely be nailed & hold more attacking weight than Nasri.

      Just my 2 cents 😉

Wally at this point is 0.8m more than Nasri so he'd want to show that alright. Agreed I haven't discounted Sterling either yet. nasri was actually quite decent FPL wise towards the end of last season.

Yeah, forgot Nasri had a burst of hauls nearing the finish. You may well be right Badger, hopefully he does perform & we can have extra option for those opting out of Chelsea mids & the like

Oscar would be a nice punt too but for me would mean a double up in chelsea mids and means I wouldnt get Azpi in now. I think I'd prefer him as a solid backline option

Yeah I could get Siggy in for Chadli by losing Naylor instead of Moore. I doubt I'd play Naylor with those 3 big defenders anyway 😉

It's interesting to have a play around on the transfer page and see what you can come up with, I doubt I'll have this team anytime soon but it does show that allocating your budget in different areas can sometimes look awesome on paper.

              Baines Azpi Hutton Yun Saylor

              Hazard Sanchez Nasri Siggy Boyd

              Costa Aguero Sakho

with 0.5m in the bank to play around with. Defenders a bit weak but Im liking them mids in December if Nasri comes good

Oof, I can see your thinking on the Chelsea double up back. I'd also feel safe at the end of the day having secured cleanies in the back, (devils advocate) but would you really throw in the 12.3m for that? When with more attacking fullbacks providing plenty of attacking threat & could argue more value (i.e Cresswell, maybe Debuchy fit, Reid) as well as the fixtures + CS potential.

Investing a JT, could make the difference between your Chadli & a fit & firing Giroud
or a Chadli vs an in-form Sterling w/ Pool showing signs of life

(this is the devil speaking of course, not me)

Just one transfer away from a team that I have been working to get for the last 4/5gw.

      Krul
      Clyne, Baines, Chambers
      Sanchez, ADM, Fab, Downing
      Sahko, Augero, Pelle.

Just need to do Pelle to Costa and I'm done. 2.9 itb. Could also do Downing, Baines, Pelle to Sterling, Costa, Yun. Don't know if it's worth it though.

So my main concern with this team

    Krul (McCarthy)

    Baines - Chambers - Bertrand

    ADM - Sanchez - Hazard - Mané

    Aguero (C) - Pellé - Berahino

    (Boyd - Moore - Bartley)

    is:

Mané has to go, but probably better to wait a week and get Siggy, right?

I want Costa as well, but the only way I see how is to get rid of ADM and that's not ideal with HUL (H) & STK (H) coming up.

Any ideas here guys? 1 FT 0.1 ITB.

I'm thinking maybe saving is the best option. Ranked 926 OR and don't want to make any rash decisions.

Potentially miss out because of injuries, suspension, and FFS Cup Qualification in Gw13 are all taken into consideration. What do you think about this -8 pts hit plan this week?

    Forster
Clyne - Chambers - Baines? (Naylor, Moore)
Siggy - Sanchez - Fab? - ADM? (Boyd)
    Kun - Pelle - Welbeck?

    Baines + Fab + Welbeck -> Azpil + Chadli + Costa

Baines : I bought him at 7.2mil, so nothing much to lose. I think he's the most likely to miss this Gw. Also, his next 3 games will be a bit difficult (tot, HUL, mci) and his attacking potential might be limited.

Chadli : He's more goal threat as compared to Fab. I just believe he will continue his threat.

Costa : 4 bookings, but get rid Fab who's also 4 bookings and I will remove Pelle next Gw.

I have exact money to do it at the moment. Keep hoping Fab will not drop before all injury updates.

After this week, Pelle -> Austin and Forster -> Guzan will help me gain money to upgrade Chambers -> Baines.

If I was in your position, I'd obviously be concerned about my defense as others have pointed out, but in tandem I'd be worried about the value Berahinho would add to my GW score.

I could live w/ one unlikely cleanie in the back, two is pushing it, but w/ a striker showing no signs of promise & facing very difficult teams in the coming GW's. He would be a transfer waiting to happen & I'd rather get rid sooner than later, especially if Austin is knocking on my door offering Belgium Waffles & Bera is lying on the floor moping teaching his dog tricks (nothing bad about that)

Austin or a declared fit Sakho would make way in no time, that's another chance at a goal & that outweighs the chances of a cleanie if i was to make a defensive transfer this week

Reading this back, not sure if I stumbled upon myself, or if I even made sense. We'll see

thanks for the thoughtful response! definitely made sense (enjoyed the imagery as well)..I guess I'll have to consider Bera > Austin (he did look quite good vs City but at a team like QPR I would worry about his chances being volatile based on their mood)

if Sakho is fit, I'd probably swap to him even if Austin frees up an extra 0.1

Yeah, I too have the same concerns about Austin. Though if Sakho is declared fit for this GW, I'd definitely pick him up. He'll easily outscore Bera in the next three, & definitely will in the next 5 IMO.

the plus for Austin is that it seems despite QPR he's able to create chances out of very little and he usually finishes what comes to him..

will just have to wait for those pressers!

I think it's kinda tough to find clean sheets so far. I would always feel comfortable that Chelsea have a chance to keep a clean sheet regardless of opposition. Can't say the same thing about any other team in the Prem.

They're no more likely to keep cleanies than we are. Saints are much better defensively and are the only impressive defense in the Prem for me this season.

Chelsea have pretty much the same exact defensive stats as they did last year to date in all areas besides clean sheets. They have had lost three clean sheets by conceding to 10 men and twice conceding in stoppage time. I know clean sheets are all we care about, but the underlying defensive stats are there for them. They have a good run of fixtures coming up, and as the fixtures pile up they are a good bet in my opinion to tighten up. Just as they did last season.

Despite the shocker to Leicester, which I might add was very controversial, we've only let in three more than Chelsea. Circumstances don't really matter but if you do want to look at them there's a definite case for us rather than Chelsea.

Chelsea got few clean sheets at the start of last year two it seems before tightening up. Looks to be going the same way.

Honestly I dont think Chelsea need an excuse. They clearly dont care all that much. They're top of the league. But I think they will start to turn the screw now.

I think that this season there are vast pockets of fixture that suit teams in each one, this pocket until January really bodes extremely well for Chelsea. In tandem both the attack & offense.

If players were doubling up on Saints D the last pocket (which brought many a great reward), as well as the Everton + Coleman double up. Surely Chelsea & Mourinho's history of tightening it up at the back will reward us now, no? Cahill has been steadily improving since the beginning of the season & Terry also has shown more grit & hunger for goal.

Now that we have more TV & the ability to invest in 2 or even three (Inssie 😉 ] big hitter in the back w/ ease, Chelsea (& of course Baines) should be on the top of your defensive draft picks.

History tends to repeats itself & Mourinho's pretty tight 😉

There's a difference between a tight defence and a clean sheet. Chelsea rarely give up chances. Liverpool scored from a defelction. United got a last ditch equaliser. Im not saying they don't concede but Im saying they have more potential than others when they tighten up.

I like all the slight misspelling of names 😆

I think Wanyama isn't a dcent option for a 4th mid. Would look to upgrade him.

Neil Taylor and Steven Taylor you mean ?
I agree with you on Wanyama but at 4.7 who do you replace him with ?

I mean Costa, Krul, Clyne mate 😆

As for Wanyama theres no replacement at 4.7m lol I meant a decent mid a bit more pricey which would mean a downgrade somewhere else. But that would e entirely up to you. You dont seem to have a lot of cash on hand.

Had a look and you're in a real pickle. Any cash in the bank? Clyne out next week I take it? You might have to look at downgrading Hazard to Oscar. Not ideal that though

In summary, William is not holding his weight for Chelsea. The only anomaly thus far.
I wish Oscar would be fielded on the left & Fab pushed in the hole. It just seems so good on paper & obviously the defense would be Fabless

I'd lean Downing, but just, due to fixtures and price. Also count me in the group that thinks this Chadli run of goals can't continue. Either way I would rather see you spread those transfers out over two weeks and do them for free rather than take a hit.

I guess Baines in for Spurs for -4 may not make the most sense! But then I will have to play one of Chester at Old Trafford or Wisdom vs Arsenal. In addition to Clyne versus City - I am not getting rid of Clyne, too much other chaff to sort out!

Smalling is back. Jones and Evans will be on the bench most likely. If we want to keep cleanies, McNair should be dropped for anyone. Been our best CB by far and looks a real prospect.

He's looked decent enough alright. A lot of these youth players tend to do alright when called upon. Look at Stones for example. Wish they were given more chances. Though I guess its a fairly cut-throat business at the top.

Yeah, frustrating. McNair looks like a Cadillac. Trying not to get too excited. Very early for him. But he's our best CB option, even ignoring the fitness issues of the others. He's also played CM quite a bit. Would make too much sense to use him or Blackett in the holding role.

If you can't splurge, Cresswell offers great attacking threat, as does Reid though he doesn't have as much exposure up top & his price tag warrants that

The consensus seems to be that Baines has the lowest chance of starting out of them.

According to the physioroom, Fab's injury is a 'slight' doubt, AdM's as well
Though Baines is the anomaly & has written "hamstring injury", this would indicate that's it the more serious of the three, nothing certain.

Either way, presser will clear all our minds soon enough

      2. BeachBadger

Fab played through his at Liverpol according to Mourinho and scans should no sign of damage, just the player showing discomfort, so it seems very likely tht fab is able to play aftr 2 weeks rest.

ADM was pmore worried about swelling, while the staff reported that it was a nasty hit and 'cut the skin'. both of these sound like small things to be worried about so also suggests that the injury isnt too severe.

Baines differs in that his scans have shown a hamstring injury, albeit a small one. Hamstrings are finickly and it may be a case of not wanting to risk aggrevating it to a worse hamstring injury.

Keep in mind Razor, that it is an unreliable website for anything transfer or injury related.
This was also from the 18th, now old news per se, but there are better sources
