Scout Notes – Gameweek 12 – Monday

Villa and Southampton share the Monday night spoils in a 1-1 draw at the midlands. Gabby Agbonlahor grabs his third of the season before a late Nathaniel Clyne strike denies the hosts all three points.

Agbonlahor the Villains’ Hero
The frontman capitalised on an error from Fraser Forster to notch his first goal since Gameweek 4 last night. Agbonlahor’s pace posed the Saints backline problems aplenty during the first period in particular and his strike means he’s now scored 50% (three of six) of his side’s goals this season. Given that Villa have netted just twice in the last eight matches, they’ll need to do far more to persuade us of investing – with Burnley, Palace, Leicester and West Brom in the next four, though, the fixtures are on their side, whilst Christian Benteke’s return from suspension in Gameweek 14 against the Eagles should help Paul Lambert’s cause.

Saints Full-Backs in the Points
Despite conceding for the first time in five league matches, Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand still delivered for their Fantasy owners in the Villa Park encounter. The duo’s attacking forays proved vital for the Saints’ equaliser as Clyne lashed home his second goal of the season thanks to Bertrand’s cutback from the left – the duo now sit second and third for defenders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

With 32% and 22% ownership respectively, Clyne and Bertrand are amongst the four most popular defenders in the FPL game but as the fixtures now take a turn for the worse, many are weighing up their options. Given that Ronald Koeman’s side face City, Arsenal, United and Everton in the next five Gameweeks now, the full-backs will need to continue their attacking raids, with defensive returns looking far less certain.

Tadic and Pelle Stumble Again
Hopes were high for the popular Southampton pair after the likes of Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos and Nathan Baker were ruled out through injury in the heart of the Villa defence. Pelle had one of his poorest matches of the season, however, and fired just a single attempt on goal – he has now failed to register one shot on target in the last four Gameweeks and with the likes of Charlie Austin, Danny Inga and Wilfried Bony appearing on our radars, last night could prove his farewell bow in many Fantasy teams. The second most popular forward in the FPL game with 31% ownership, Pelle’s appeal is also dampened by the fact he remains on four yellow cards – just one caution shy of a single-match ban.

Tadic’s place in our squads is also uncertain. After blanking in seven of the first 11 Gameweeks, he needed a big performance last night to stay in our Fantasy plans – another lacklustre blank suggests there’d be no surprise to see him appear amongst the most transferred out before the next deadline is upon us.

    Now we're clear of Southampton's good run of fixtures, who's keeping who?

    I've dropped Pelle (->Costa) and Forster (->Cortois) but keeping Bertrand.

          Bertie went this week for Dummet as I had to use a transfer or lose it...

          Wanted both Siggy and Costa and therefore had to dump Eriksen / Pelle Saturday night to be sure I could. Couldn't afford it shifting out Mane

      Few weeks ago people were planning to keep attacking cover and dropping defefenders - now it's otherway around.

      I think what is changed is that attacking cover needs to be booted - but it doesn't affect on defenders, they need to go too.

    Concerns in my team:

    Downing

    Chadli (Didn't Start)

    Silva (Will he start next week?)

    Pelle & Bertrand (Horrible Fixtures)

    Moore and Albrighton (They Don't Start)

    So out of these which 3 would you Prioritize on Removing?

      Wildcard that?! No chance, everyone had a bad GW, that's a really good team! I'd look to ditch one or two of Pelle/Chadli (depending on news)/Clyne, but to be honest I doubt you even need a hit.

      I have a similar team and had a similarly bad week. I would say keep faith, those injured may be back next week so with a couple of transfers (begovic, pelle) you should be ok for next week.

      I also have a very similar team and a horrible week (40 points)

      Keep the faith. Pelle out is maybe all you need this week and then keep an eye on injuries. If Chadders/Downing out for more than 1/2 games then upgrade there

    My team atm

    Forster - (Guzan)
    Baines - Bertrand - Chambers - (Hutton) - (Moore)
    Sanchez - Hazard - Downing - Tadic - (Boyd)
    Aguero, Costa, Austin

    1FT, 0.4ITB

    I've planned to do Tadic -> Siggy at this point for a few weeks, but now i'm not that sure. The problem is i don't have any strong captain contender for this GW, and my defence needs an improvment too (Bertrand's fixtures, Arsenal's form, and Moore dropped to benched). So i thought about:

    A. Tadic -> Siggy
    B. Tadic, Costa -> Siggy, Rooney (c)
    C. Tadic, Costa -> Oscar, Rooney (c)
    D. Tadic, Chambers -> Siggy, Baines
    E. Tadic, Moore -> Siggy, Caulker/Yun

    B-E would be for -4 hit.

    Currently leaning towards A and C. Any suggestions?

    I've decided I need some Chelsea in my midfield – but is Bertie and Chadli > Yun and Oscar my best move to get it?

    (I'll also look at ADM > Haz/Fab if the Argentinian doesn't do the business over next couple of fixtures.)

    Current team:
    Foster/Guzan
    Chambers, Bertie, Baines, Duff, Moore
    ADM, Sanchez, Chadli, Siggy, Boyd
    Aguero, Costa, Austin (1FT; 0.8 in bank)

    PS: Thanks to Jonty for that CHE analysis above - great post!

      ADM will get you points over the upcoming fixtures.

      every aguero costa team just looks so uneven to me

        Thanks - and yep you're right, especially when you add Baines into that mix! What do you think of the moves though? (Bertie and Chadli > Yun and Oscar)

    Looks like most players have a lot of thinking to do this week regarding whom to replace Pelle.

    What are people's thoughts of Costa vs. Rooney?

    Rooney cheaper and less owners - But can he score the same/more points than Costa?
    For players not owning any of them - who do you bring in?

      Costa will score 30+ goals this season. Can't believe people are actually thinking of going without.

        You're exaggerating a little bit though. 20+, sure, but probably still ends with goal/match ratio lower than 1 and won't play over 30 matches. He had a start that he himself reckoned was anomalously good and cannot keep up that form all season.

      Could be a good couple of weeks for a rooney punt but longer term i think costa will have him covered

      A straight swap for Pelle will be popular.

      A) I might take 4 point hit for a defender, moore isn't playing so I may as well replace him. I can't play clyne/bert against man city

      B) I've already got rid of welbeck

          Good option Champ, going Rooney and Sakho myself to partner Kun but Costa and Bony is probably the safest option if you have the £.

      For Pelle? Bony and Rooney are the popular choices.
