The Digest – Gameweek 21

Our final glance back at Gameweek 21 casts an eye over Alexis Sanchez’ one-man show against Stoke, Palace’s new emphasis on attack and the knock-on effect of Sergio Aguero’s return to fitness on our winter Wildcard plans.

The Player

Heading into Sunday’s home match with Stoke on the back of a single goal in six league outings, Alexis Sanchez was, for some, a potentially dispensable option when it came to pressing the winter Wildcard button. Two goals, an assist and a trio of bonus points later, the Chilean soared to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings by single-handedly dismantling Stoke at the Emirates.

From a Fantasy perspective, Sanchez’ display emphatically answered questions over his ability to deliver explosive returns from out wide. With Olivier Giroud free from injury and suspension, there were fears that, at a price of 11.4, the South American would simply fail to offer the same value for money as he does when played through the centre.

The summer signing has now served up six double-figure hauls, with his 19-point tally against the Potters equalling Sergio Aguero’s highest haul for the season and underlining his captaincy credentials as the schedule prepares to smile kindly on the Gunners. From Gameweek 23 onwards, Arsene Wenger’s side have home clashes with Aston Villa, Leicester, Everton and West Ham, allied with trips to Palace, QPR and Newcastle over a run of eight matches.

Certainly, as the treatment room empties, there’s no shortage of cheaper attacking options to choose from. Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, along with Giroud and Santi Cazorla, offer high quality competition but after his weekend showing, it seems they’ll be vying for a slot alongside Sanchez in our 15-man squads, rather than taking a place at the 12-goal hero’s expense.

The Team

A home clash with Tottenham looked a real baptism of fire for Alan Pardew in his first match in charge at Palace. With the Eagles’ two in-form players, Mile Jedinak and Yannick Bolasie, off on international duties, their chances of overcoming a Spurs side that had just hit five past Chelsea seemed slim – all the more so after Harry Kane had fired the visitors ahead.

Back came Palace, though, and thanks to goals from Dwight Gayle and Jason Puncheon, Pardew’s side earned the points to raise hopes of replicating last season’s great escape. Whilst Tony Pulis’s installation in 2013/14 saw the London side grind out gritty wins, Pardew is looking to charm the home faithful and fire his way to safety by going on the offensive, thus improving the prospects of a side that had scored just twice in the previous seven league outings.

Certainly, the signs are good. Palace fired 21 shots on Saturday evening, with 15 inside the box – up markedly on their Gameweek 1-20 averages of 10.6 (third lowest in the league) and 5.7 (second lowest) respectively. With four excellent upcoming fixtures (bur, EVE, lei, NEW), Pardew now has the chance to build momentum.

It remains to be seen whether Palace have return to their resilient ways of old but judging by Pardew’s philosophy, our targets are perhaps best focused further up the field. Whilst Jedinak and Bolasie remain out of the picture, Gayle could be a short-term option, though there’s no doubt his prospects are dented by the form of a number of fellow budget frontmen. Puncheon, on the other hand, will be hoping to kick on from here and resurrect the form that served up seven goals and a trio of assists last time around – at 5.5, he looks the pick of the bunch for those on the lookout for a Wildcard differential.

The Talking Point

For the sake of our winter Wildcard planning, it would have been so much easier if Sergio Aguero had remained injured for another couple of weeks. Instead, the Argentine’s return off the bench at Everton has sparked a stampede for his signature over the last few days – drafted in by over 54,000 prior to last weekend’s deadline, he’s the most sought after Fantasy player this week and has already risen by 0.1 to 12.4.

Frustratingly for non-owners, the increasing interest in Aguero is threatening to drive his price up at a time when City host Arsenal and travel to Chelsea in back-to-back matches. Typically, those without the Argentine would be happy to wait until Gameweek 24, when the schedule turns very much in the champions’ favour, but there’s a real possibility that he could be sitting at 12.9 by that point if the current rate of interest is maintained. For many, that point alone is enough to acquire Aguero now.

This weekend’s home clash with the Gunners merely strengthens the case for his inclusion – Manuel Pellegrini’s side hit six past Arsenal in the equivalent fixture in 2013/14. On the other hand, expectations are collectively low for the following weekend at Stamford Bridge, given that the City striker blanked at home to the Blues earlier this season.

Whilst opting to court caution with a player who has racked up 14 goals and three assists in 16 league appearances is a danger, the outcome of these next two weeks may ultimately be determined by Aguero’s fitness. Pellegrini handed him just 24 minutes at Goodison on Saturday – suggesting he’s yet to convince his manager of his match sharpness – but with another week’s training behind him, Aguero, who has averaged 7.9 points per start this term, could well be unleashed from the first whistle as City look to recover from their weekend stumble.

Joint highest number of clean sheets in the league with chelsea and have recently got one away at Utd and at home to Arsenal. I'd say it's say to double up. Bertrand/Clyne have good attacking potential too.

Seems to be the format wildcard team for everyone atm? Surely people should chuck a couple differentials in otherwise they won't gain?

I don't think he's 100% to start but should do. Depends if pelle feels he's fit enough to risk, won't want another injury with Chelsea couple weeks after.

They struggled against everton though, so I think they need to get their star striker back up front.

Last year i cracked and played it this week but regretted it. Similar situation as now in that the template felt settled and was rising in price. At the time i decided it would have been better to wait. So this year i will see it through and see how that works out.

Chelsea v City, last 4 PL games at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have won 3 and 1 draw. City have scored 2 goals in those 4 games.

Chelsea at home in the PL this season, played 10 won 10 and 3 goals conceded in total.

          Any other stats you need?

As for Arsenal, yes City will likely score 2 or 3 but Aguero is unlikely to play 90 minutes and may not even start.

Gambling on Aguero in the next 2 weeks is highly risky if you want to maximise points. It's a bit more rational to protect against price rises but even the extent of that has been exaggerated in my opinion.

    3. Ruth_NZ

            Ah okay.

Hmm yeah, with so many budget options around though, you can still make an excellent team!

Like it, similar to mine - though I'm in reverse situation on the fourth mid - can't afford Downing, so I'm going to go with AJ or Punchy and upgrade to Downing or Siggy if Toby comes back (allowing Clyne > Toby). Like the GK combo too.

Hmm fair enough. I'd probably go AJ of the two, although Puncheon on pens while Jedinak is out.

That's a good idea, it is just that Downing has extremely bad fixtures after this week.

        Cheers.

Price watchers: I'd like to wait until next week to bring in the WC team below, mainly to give Silva another week and Sterling a post-Caribbean run-out against Villa.

However, it leaves me with a flat 0.0 ITB so I've no wiggle room for price changes – do you think I have any chance of affording this on Saturday afternoon? (As ADM and Aguero have already risen, I'm hoping I might just get away with it).

In: Terry, Clyne, Myhill, Wisdom, PVA, AJ, ADM, Aguero
Out: Guzan, Azpi, Creswell, Demi, Naylor, Silva, Sterling, Austin

    Leaving:
    Terry, Clyne, Wisdom, PVA, Wazza
    Sanchez, Hazard, ADM, Boyd, AJ
    Kane, Costa, Aguero

That's pretty conclusive - thanks fellas. May as well lock this in now then, I'll only regret it if i don't! (and I can always leave cash in bank for Sterling > ADM anyway)

Re Silva vs AdM on WC: GIven MCI may blank GW27, the safer choice may be AdM for now, and then possibly get Silva back in if desired

Bertrand. Apparently his PPG is the best in the game or some shi†, I personally got him because he's better looking than Clyne.

Can't go wrong either way IMO. Both capable of grabbing a goal and good for an odd assist here and there. Might as well go for the cheaper alternative as both are nailed on and will play.

Yup. Would go for Bertrand over Clyne at the same price (as I have a soft spot for him), but Clyne currently cheaper so gone for him

£24.6m for 2 MIDS and one FOR...

    A) Markovic / Downing / Costa
    B) ADM / Tadic / Ings

Haha sorry, should have been more clear!

I'm leaning towards B, seeing as I already have Hazard... And I do want to be part of Man Utds good fixtures!

I didn't have a chance to respond on other page.

In any case, I asked how the community was making space for Costa.

    The summarised answers are

    - No city/chelsea defender (3)
    - Three premium mids, no big-names in defence e.g. Toby (inj) instead of Bertrand (3)
    - Heavily compromised defence (2)
    - Two premium mids, big name defence (1)

    So, the options are:

    1. No Costa.
    2. No city/chelsea defender.
    3. No branded defenders e.g. Toby (inj) instead of Bertrand.
    4. Less premium mids than your ML rivals.

I am not sure that 3 pays off in the long run and 4 is too frightening.

I know that there has been a lot of Costa or Fabregas chat, but wonder if the real decision is Costa or a City/Chelsea defender?

I will always have a Chelsea Defender, I don't understand people that argue Costa and Fab. Fab gets a few assists but Costa is the main attacking point for Chelsea. He could have had 2 goals last weekend, then that 6 turns into 11-13

      Personally its between

      A) Aguero, Austin, Kane and a solid midfield and solid defence.
      B) Aguero, Costa, Kane and half a midfield and minimal defence.

Austin and Kane are far out performing the likes of Tadic or any cheap defender so it makes sense to cut the cost there.

This is looking to be my team

      Panti
      Terry - Clyne - PVA
      Hazard - Sanchez - ADM - Siggy
      Costa - Kun - Kane

      Hamer -- Albrighton - Baird - Wasi

Weak bench, but everything else you have listed can be ticked off

Ooooph.. that was the toughest decision on WC.. just completed transfers of Silva + Austin -> Costa + Boyd, lost 1m on it also.. anything else to change on this WC or good to go?

    Krul
    Terry Clyne Bertrand
    Sterling Sánchez Chadli Hazard
    Costa Agüero Kane

    Subs: Pantilimon Boyd Wisdom Wasilewski

Better options than Sterling out there. Not sure about the Clyne/Bertrand double up myself. Other than that solid team bruv.

Thought I'd give him a go against Aston Villa without Vlaar, Rodgers said he would be back for the game fully rested.. who would you go for instead?

considering you've only got 2 Chelsea, Oscar wouldn't be a bad shout. Good differential option. Mané was looking hot before he got injured, so when he gets back I'd keep an eye on him.

You could always downsize one of Clyne/Bert to someone decent yet cheaper like Naylor, Cresswell (bad fixtures tho), Clichy or Skertel, allowing you upgrade Sterling to Silva or ADM (when and if he gets back on form), who are much better options imo.

I'd consider downgrading one of Clyne/Bertrand and Sterling -> AdM. Just realised AdM is the safer choice given any of Liv/MCI/Che may blank in GW27

    Rooney, Austin, Kane

Aguero maybe not Costa. I could do Rooney to Aguero for free and squeeze a defence out
