Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 22 – Monday

Kevin Mirallas’ missed spot-kick proves disastrous for Everton and Leighton Baines owners alike as the Toffees stutter to a goalless draw with West Brom. The Baggies earn a second straight shut-out as Tony Pulis’ installation brings their defence onto our Wildcard radars.

Mixed Fortunes for Baines Owners

The major talking point from last night’s match was Kevin Mirallas’ decision to take – and subsequently miss – the Toffees’ first-half spot-kick as Roberto Martinez’ men failed to score for the fifth time in eight matches. The Belgian’s domination of set-pieces has already dented Leighton Baines’ prospects in recent weeks and the left-back suffered again after Mirallas pulled rank before striking the outside of the post.

After the match, Roberto Martinez confirmed that Baines remains the Toffees number one spot-kick taker but played down reports that Mirallas was withdrawn at half-time as a result of his penalty decision:

“He [Mirallas] wasn’t 100%, he was feeling his hamstring. He wasn’t moving freely. We had dynamic players in the second-half full of energy, and that was the reason for the substitution. Our penalty taker is Leighton Baines, but Kevin always takes penalties well and he felt confident, he wanted to take it. Leighton was quite happy to allow him to do that and both have the quality to score. If he hit the back of the net then nothing would’ve happened, but both players have enough character to convert the penalty at that moment. For me Leighton is the No.1 taker. At that point I would’ve been happy to allow Leighton and Kevin to discuss that. The issue is we haven’t scored and it becomes a talking point.”

Last night’s goalless draw did, at least, bring the Toffees a first clean sheet in 12 attempts. After a poor run of form, Baines has now delivered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks and sits just one point off fourth spot in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender standings, though with in-form Palace, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next five, he may have to up his attacking output to stay in contention.

Another Clean Sheet for Pulis

The Baggies’ new manager continues to weave his magic on their defensive assets after steering his side to a second successive shut-out since taking the helm. Once again, Pulis selected the 3.9-priced Chris Baird at left-back ahead of Sebastien Pocognoli and the former Fulham man looks poised to nail down a regular role ahead of clashes with Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six. Ben Foster’s save point potential helped the stopper to a seven-point return at Goodison, and at 4.6, could be set for increased investment as Fantasy managers line up to take advantage of the “Pulis effect”.

Berahino Back on the Flank

After netting five times in his first two appearances under Pulis, the youngster was drafted in by 24,000 FPL managers ahead of the Goodison clash. Hopes were high that Berahino was set to step up his claim for a place in our three-man frontlines but his manager’s tactical tinkering may force a rethink – Pulis switched from a 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 for last night’s encounter and opted for the muscular Victor Anichebe up front, with Berahino fielded on the left. It remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will opt for a solitary striker for road trips only, though last night’s teamsheet certainly suggests the young striker’s versatility could go against him when Pulis is looking to tighten up.

I don't know why Leighton didn't speak up a bit more, surely he's the pen king there? I sold him last week, so I'm glad he didn't take it!

Do you remember when Keane grabbed the ball off of Forlan and gave it to Van Nistellroy ? . Lampard also stopped Drogba from taking a penalty when Chelsea were only 1 - 0 up against Wigan on the last day of the season a few years ago. Depends on the personality I think .

Yeah both good examples. You could see Naismith was trying to do that, but I guess Mirallas strikes it well enough for people not to be too bothered. Funny though. I had both 2 GWs ago, I would've been absolutely livid all round!

by "Jedinak" i mean that key role in midfield for a Pulis team, your 5th aint going to start in FPL just pop in with a 3 pointer when you need him.

Right click and go to properties of the folders to work out which ones are taking up all the space. Find the biggest one then go into that, then find the biggest folder within that folder etc. Should find the culprit pretty soon.

I bet this has been asked before but does anybody know who Arsenals first choice right back will be, Bellerin or Chambers? Or will they be rotated and best not to go there?

    1. JariL
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

Bellerin has started the last 2 and they've kept 2 cleanies so he should be preferred now. But might be rotated with Chambers. I'm still getting Bellerin with my WC, decent back-up defenders and an occasional rest shouldn't be that bad at that price.

    2. Mahesh_Kumar

Yeah, fixtures aren't great, but that 8.5m price range allows for lots of interchange (Ramsey, Carzola, Eriksen, Mata etc...)

whats peoples thoughts on downing? His form is good so is it worth keeping him when choosing your WC or are WHM to tricky.

Classic case of Form over fixtures?

selling him on wc. already had downing for a poor run of fixtures and he's not fixture proof

Does anyone know who calculates the projections and how I can contact them? Or does anyone have a link to the videos that were posted a while back about projections?

It occurred to me that it would be really beneficial to have confidence intervals of the projected scores. From what I remember the projections are calculated from running a simulation of the match 100+ times and taking the mean score the player returns. A 95% confidence interval of that mean would be really helpful in assessing the accuracy of the projection and also in selecting captains.

Hi, the projections use the same calculations as RMT. Its a different way of presenting them to look quickly at gameweek, six gameweek and overall projections by position.

The RMT is updated throughout each week to take into account form, fixtures, probability of players starting and a variety of other factors.

      Hope that helps.

      Cheers.

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. The 'under the hood' video was informative but still didn't explain how those figures were calculated. I guess that's the magic of the RMT statistical model that needs to be kept under wraps.

I'd like to suggest the inclusion of 95% confidence intervals for the RMT projections as with a little explanation they could really be beneficial to all of us. They basically give a spread of likely scores around the RMT projection, the tighter the spread, the more likely the player will be to attain the projection.

For example, say Sanchez and Hazard are both projected to score 7.00 this week and Sanchez has a 95%CI of 1 but Hazard has a 95%CI of 2. This means that the 'true' score for Sanchez is likely to be between 6.00 and 8.00 but the 'true' score for Hazard is likely to be between 5.00 and 9.00. This would be good for the Maverick vs. Dullard debate.

Calculating 95%CI's is really easy and I'm sure Chris Atkinson (or someone similar) would have no problem adding this in. The only proviso is that the scores must be based on means of multiple match simulations. I couldn't quite figure this out from the video.

Is there any way to get in touch with Chris Atkinson to put this to him?

        Thanks.

Hi all, any help on the following please?
Got one ft this week, with wildcard still in tact. A bit unsure what to do..

    DDG (LEI)
baines (cry) ivanovic (MCI) moreno (WHU)
    Sanchez Hazard sterling Di Maria
    Kane Rooney Austin

    Gilks wisdom Hutton Marney
As you can see, I don't really see a transfer to improve my starting eleven... And don't feel I need to wildcard, but feels stupid to not make use of a transfer I'll lose next week after playing my wildcard.

any help much appreciated, thank you.

Please help me with my WC team, not been on here in a while so not sure if there is a template, what with TV being different between people...

    Krul - Foster

    Clyne - Zabaleta - PVA - 8.8m

Thoughts on this wildcard team pls.
    Ospina Hamer
    Terry P.Jones Gardos Bellerin Baird
    Sanchez Fabregas Dimaria Ellia Ameobi
    Aguero Costa Gayle.
I believe dimaria will start scoring with easy home fixtures ahead. Going with palace's form and good home fixtures so gayle as third striker.
