Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 22 – Monday

Kevin Mirallas’ missed spot-kick proves disastrous for Everton and Leighton Baines owners alike as the Toffees stutter to a goalless draw with West Brom. The Baggies earn a second straight shut-out as Tony Pulis’ installation brings their defence onto our Wildcard radars.

Mixed Fortunes for Baines Owners

The major talking point from last night’s match was Kevin Mirallas’ decision to take – and subsequently miss – the Toffees’ first-half spot-kick as Roberto Martinez’ men failed to score for the fifth time in eight matches. The Belgian’s domination of set-pieces has already dented Leighton Baines’ prospects in recent weeks and the left-back suffered again after Mirallas pulled rank before striking the outside of the post.

After the match, Roberto Martinez confirmed that Baines remains the Toffees number one spot-kick taker but played down reports that Mirallas was withdrawn at half-time as a result of his penalty decision:

“He [Mirallas] wasn’t 100%, he was feeling his hamstring. He wasn’t moving freely. We had dynamic players in the second-half full of energy, and that was the reason for the substitution. Our penalty taker is Leighton Baines, but Kevin always takes penalties well and he felt confident, he wanted to take it. Leighton was quite happy to allow him to do that and both have the quality to score. If he hit the back of the net then nothing would’ve happened, but both players have enough character to convert the penalty at that moment. For me Leighton is the No.1 taker. At that point I would’ve been happy to allow Leighton and Kevin to discuss that. The issue is we haven’t scored and it becomes a talking point.”

Last night’s goalless draw did, at least, bring the Toffees a first clean sheet in 12 attempts. After a poor run of form, Baines has now delivered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks and sits just one point off fourth spot in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender standings, though with in-form Palace, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next five, he may have to up his attacking output to stay in contention.

Another Clean Sheet for Pulis

The Baggies’ new manager continues to weave his magic on their defensive assets after steering his side to a second successive shut-out since taking the helm. Once again, Pulis selected the 3.9-priced Chris Baird at left-back ahead of Sebastien Pocognoli and the former Fulham man looks poised to nail down a regular role ahead of clashes with Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six. Ben Foster’s save point potential helped the stopper to a seven-point return at Goodison, and at 4.6, could be set for increased investment as Fantasy managers line up to take advantage of the “Pulis effect”.

Berahino Back on the Flank

After netting five times in his first two appearances under Pulis, the youngster was drafted in by 24,000 FPL managers ahead of the Goodison clash. Hopes were high that Berahino was set to step up his claim for a place in our three-man frontlines but his manager’s tactical tinkering may force a rethink – Pulis switched from a 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 for last night’s encounter and opted for the muscular Victor Anichebe up front, with Berahino fielded on the left. It remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will opt for a solitary striker for road trips only, though last night’s teamsheet certainly suggests the young striker’s versatility could go against him when Pulis is looking to tighten up.

I'm starting to think that maybe taking Falcao (or RvP if fit) for one GW then swapping to Kun maybe a better way to go.

    anyone doing this?

      Ageuro->Falcao

        then wc back after?

My team was in need of major surgery hence me hitting the button

Lloris, Cameron, Cresswell, Naylor, Chadli, Rooney arguably Boyd all needed to go and I'm coming off the back of a terrible GW

Yes playing my WC straight after. I'm not comfortable going into the Chelsea v City game with 4 players, That's too many blanks.

Similar thinking but it seems like over-planning. But it could pay off to have either a United striker with a plan to switch to Aguero or ADM with a plan to switch to Oscar

That crossed to my mind too, but is Falcao nailed on? Can he play 50min or start on the bench? That is my worry. Also who can guarantee that Kun won't score against Chelsea?

I would be cautious with Cazorla despite his current purple patch - Ozil is waiting in the wings, and Walcott could also set the cat among the pigeons...

    1. chubbyalonso

I concur. His 'purple patch' has also come mostly from set pieces and while that makes him a good, consistent points producer, he is hardly likely to explode from them, and you can perhaps find other options for the same job.

From a statistical point of view 61% of Cazorla's shots come from outside the box (ie. less likely to score from his shots) and of his five goals this season, four have come from the spot (in Arteta's absence as primary taker)

I've covered more about the Arsenal game on my blog where I've also reviewed the weekend's fixtures...have a look if you're interested! http://chubbyalonso.com/2015/01/20/kicking-the-blues-business-as-usual-mostly/

What the heck do I do with this? WC? I have both available at the mo:

    Bego

    Berty/Creswell/Zab

    Hazard/Sanchez/Siggy/Silva

    Costa/Austen/Kane

    Downing/Hutton/Chester/Krul

2.3 ITB. If no WC I'm thinking Siggy to Cazorla/ADM, thoughts?

      Be careful.

It's very marmite on here. People using him for 4 weeks or so until Downing's fixtures improve, others suggesting he wont continue to score with every shot on target and his previous years have been troubled.

not too sure - his finishes were confident but had a slice of (goalkeeping) luck in both. also southampton were playing on the break which released his speedy self - normally you'd see them being the more dominant side working the ball into the box, which means elia will likely be the one putting them in, rather than being at the end of it.

i've talked about elia and some other things in my weekly fantasy review on my blog...have a look! http://chubbyalonso.com/2015/01/20/kicking-the-blues-business-as-usual-mostly/

    Goalie WC dilemma:

    Panti and Krul

    or

    Foster and Guzan
Have had Foster and Wisdom for some time now and will be keeping Wisdom, but prefer the SUN/NEW rotation better than the WBA/AVL, but Pulis has me on second thoughts.

Here's my deal, I've got 1 FT that will go to waste unless I use it. I've got 1.3 ITB, but I'm quite happy with my starting XI. Do I just let it go to waste? Will wildcard next week. CHeers! 😀

    Krul (hul)

Ivan (MCI) Bertrand (SWA) Baines (cpy)

Haz (MCI) Sanchez (AVL) Downing (liv) ADM (LEI)

Costa (MCI) Austin (stk) Kane (wba)

Yeah I'll wait until after the upcoming games of course, but barring an injury there's nothing I really want to do. ADM to Cazorla is an option, but that will have to wait as ADM has Leicester at home, and I think he could fire if played in his correct position.

    A) PVA (BUR H)
    B) Terry (MCI H)
    C) Fonte (SWA H)
    D) Bellerin (AVL H)
    E) Kane (WBA A)

i've been keeping an eye on west brom and am fairly conviced that chris baird can be that 5th defender to fill up that cheap spot - he's really lucked out with tony pulis to earn him that starting berth. the more interesting stat is that 44% of west brom's attacks came down chris baird's flank - suggesting he might be twice more likely to put the crosses in than andre wisdom (the more popular west brom fantasy defender)

i've covered that, and more on my blog, check it out! http://chubbyalonso.com/2015/01/20/kicking-the-blues-business-as-usual-mostly/

I'm not sure he'll stay in the starting 11 long after Mane's back. But for now he's a terrific option. So, no he's not a long term option, but I like him as a medium term punt.

How has Bellerin come to prominence so quickly? It seemed like Chambers was in at rb without Debuchy and when Kos went down Monreal went in at cb. Then suddenly Debuchy goes down at Stoke at Bellerin comes in ahead of Chambers. Why?

      • 13 Years

Chambers missed the Stoke came through illness. He also had a bit of a shocker in a couple of games over Xmas so Bellerin was given a chance against City too. Imagine him to be in the time for a while yet but would say he is far from nailed on.

Maybe Wenger saw that Chambers is clearly unsuited to playing RB (I don't think the Swansea match against Montero helped), and that Bellerin is actually a RB, and a very good one in the making.

Stoke were ripped apart at Arsenal and played really poorly, think Hughes mixed it up a bit. Bardsley did ok and they won so would say it's unlikely Cameron will go straight back in.

I hate you first WC people 😉

I'm not a huge fan of having 3 benchable attackers - I wouldn't want to start 2 of Puncheon, Elia and Bojan every week. I still think Kane is the best option in that bracket.

I'd maybe look at downgrading Elia, and doing Chadli and Bojan to Cazorla and Kane (if you have the money).

    Total noob question coming.

I've put a decent amount of work into my team before and during the season and am sitting ok now (top 12k).

What I do not understand is the wildcard. I have yet to use a wildcard this season. I understand you get two. Do I still have two available to me?

More importantly, what is the prevailing wisdom as to when to play a wildcard? International break? End of season? When your team's looking shite?

If there's an article explaining the above a link would be great. Else some FFS wisdom.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes pity on me!

    1. Demí
      • 13 Years

Yes 2. One's an anytime wildcard which you can use any given gameweek. The 2nd is a jan wildcard which you need to now use this week or the next week before it expires.

      1. Demí
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

And yes, play it when your teams looking rubbish and in need of a makeover. You can also use it to your advantage during double gameweeks to load up on players from the teams involved.

So as there's no doublegameweeks this month, use the jan wildcard in the next 2 weeks to give your team a makeover of sorts!

        Thanks mate.

So assuming I use one next week, even if I don't want to make a heap of changes, should you still target players who will rise during the week, and then swap back to your desired team before the end of the wildcard, so as to accrue TV?

I think that's something I may have overlooked this year, my TV is 105.4, which seems fairly average.

I mean in the sense that I put in a bit of work looking at players, without understanding the fine rules of the game. It's gotten me this far but I'm sure seasoned FPL players leap up the standings more and more as the season progresses.

    3. Park the bus
      • 13 Years

Yes you get 1 wildcard to use at any time and another only in January time. you could use both in consecutive weeks If you wanted!

Up to you when to use... in previous seasons, my main WC has never lasted past week 12 because my team has fallen to bits. this season I've been pretty stead since about GW 6 so not used yet.

if you still hold now, the best thing to do is wait until after Double gameweeks to use it.... I know you are now asking what a double gameweek (DGW) is!! Basically when FA cup games get prioritised ahead of PL games, teams will have a "blank" weekend (get these players out of your team or bench them if you can) but this will be made up with them having 2 matches in 1 gameweek... the idea being to get as many of these players as you can into your team as a greater incentive to get points. Once the DGWs are finished / die down, you will obviously have a lot of players from a small number of teams in your squad... then is the time to use the wildcard to put your team back to normal.

hope this helps as a summary!

Not sure whether to get Puncheon in midfield and Bojan replacing Kane (can he maintain his form!?) or Gayle (but not Punch & Gayle!)

Gayle seems to have a starting place nailed down now under Pardew but would still be cautious as Pardew wants to attain another Striker in addition to Sanogo.

I'm most likely going to opt for Puncheon and Bojan that way get Palace attacking coverage and also Stoke's juicy fixtures 😛
