The Big Numbers – Gameweek 24-25

We delve into the previous two Gameweeks’ data this afternoon after the quick-fire schedule saw a couple of rounds of fixtures take place over the last six days. Southampton and Leicester’s wide men with an eye for goal, Liverpool’s raiding wing-back and Burnley’s in-form striker are amongst today’s candidates, whilst we also asses the lack of impact from a Palace winger and the Saints’ toiling Italian.

Schulpp and Mahrez are 2 good options! but with 1 you are getting a OOP

But do you want an OOP def in a team who can get a fair number of minus points for goals conceded.......?

And you're get some decent OOP from PvA and Bellerin for the same price range and better defences.

Much to my surprise, Aston Villa have a net spend of around £50m on transfers in the 2.5 seasons Lambert has been there. Seems that the US owners have a point.

There are some pretty dreadful buys: Sylla £2m, El Ahmadi £2.5m, Kozak £5m, Bacuna £3m, Tonev £2m, Jensen £2m, Rodriguez £2m, Bennett £2.5m, Sanchez £5m. Maybe it's my ignorance but half of those I have never heard of.

If Lambert was responsible for transfers then I guess he has little room for complaint.

They didn't have anyone decent to sell. Spending 50m in that time is nothing compared to TV money and PL money they were receiving.

Not really true. The bulk of a PL club's revenues go on wages and aren't available for transfer fees.

Chelsea, who have hugely bigger revenues than Villa, have an estimated £40m per season available for transfer fees after wages and running costs are deducted. Villa have spent an average £20m per season during Lambert's tenure. For a club of that size that's a sizeable budget.

Not fair to compare the two considering what Chelsea did before FFP (hoarding youngsters). They can sell many players for healthy sums as shown last summer and last month.

At a guess, Villa make a hefty profit every season regardless of what he's spent.

"Hoarding" is pejorative but I'll pass that over. It's irrelevent anyway. The figures quoted are based on standard revenues only. Chelsea have a net transfer budget of around £40m per season.

As for Villa, their latest reported accounts show a £51m operating loss for the 2012-13 season.

None of them on big wages though, the cost of buying players isn't just transfer fees, there's wages and agent fees to deal with.

A good player costs 10m or more. 50m gets you about 4 good players and some can be busts

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Yep. That's why that list is so peculiar. £25m spent on 9 players, none of whom have given them much at all. It's as if Villa have been playing roulette and hoping for a cheap find they can make a lot of money on, rather than actually strengthening their team.

RMT assuming I transfer Costa in:

    Pants,
    PvA, Bellerin, Terry
    Hazard, ADM, Walcott, Ozil
    Kun(C), Costa, Kane

    Hamer, Baird, Wasi, Albrighton

Good for this week, then you can lose the extra points it gains you in hits for the week after.

    2. Ruth_NZ

If you transfer Costa in surely you have to captain him at home to Burnley? I can't see the gain otherwise.

Costa in this GW as captain is something I was planning to do. But defender issues (Wisdom, Jones) have forced my hand. Being able to field 11 in GW 27 is more important, much as I'd like to make the Costa move.

I think you are in the same situation. Baird and Wasilewski need sorting.

      1. Randy_Marsh
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Very valid point. I'm worried about not fielding 11 GW27. Saving the FT could make things much easier if Costa blanks

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

I don't believe a Costa haul is anything to worry about. Very few of the top 50k managers will be bringing him in ahead of a blank.

Actually that's part of the attraction. Captaining Costa for a haul could potentially give you a big win with so few others having him. But like I said, for me the pragmatic approach of using 2 FTs on defenders (much as I dislike it) makes more sense as I will automatically have JT, Hazard and Kane benched in GW 27 and need all my squad to play that week.

There's been a lot of talk on here about what people are doing if Chelsea have a DGW GW28, but not much on the opposite scenario. If Leicester win/draw this weekend, are people planning on selling Chelsea players?

BLANK whu SOU doesn't sound very appealing, especially when Arsenal have EVE, qpr, WHU and City liv LEI bur in the same GW's.

Looking further forwards, if Man U and Leicester were to both win this weekend and then draw in their QF's, Chelsea would end up having two blanks before any DGW's.

Would you sell Terry/Ivan/Hazard if there was no double coming up soon?

I could keep Puncheon till GW27 and then sell. I have no money ITB after I did Caz to Sanchez. However other midfielders for that price(£5.6max) aren't great. I'm considering Walters atm(good fixtures)

Starting Wisdom is almost the same as benching him, except he may end up starting, so if you prefer that fixture, go for it. Unlikely Pulis would use him as a sub, though always possible. More likely to use attacking sub, generally.

I've made an excel document that'll help you plan your transfers up to GW 21 (when you get unlimited transfers).

There might be another double GW incoming if Liverpool and Crystal Palace tie in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Because of 'Pools European matches against Besiktas, the replay will be played on 4 March which means that the match against Burnley in GW28 will be moved.

    http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/burnley-game-moved-liverpool-fc-8642156

Are there any other teams that could miss out on GW28 because of this?

So GW28 would be the blank?

Yes. With Liverpools tight scheduled the match might not be played for a while.

Good to know. On the one hand, will be carrying extra Spurs by that time, but will hold off on Pool until after this weekend. I'm sorting out defense, anyway, so not really thinking Pool or Palace. Cheers, though. Sorry I don't know about other possible blanks/doubles.

Yeah, that's right. Though Palace are playing Southampton in GW28 (forgot to think about them) and that might twist things a little further.

I looked into the schedule for 24. to 26. of February, and Arsenal are the only other team that are still in the FA Cup and play European matches that week. But Arsenal could play the replay next week (18 February). If not, we might see a blank gameweek for Arsenal in GW28, and a single GW instead of a double gameweek for QPR.

I think it's a no, but Defoe > Kane for a hit this week despite blank the next week?

Would mean I have 3 Chelsea and 1 Spurs with enough to go Costa > Sturridge or Zouma > different cheapie.

If you've survived this long, what's one more week. Plus it's for a hit. With other Chelsea players you have, seems unwise.

So Roy Hodgson has a better handle on out squad than our manager does. If that's not a stinging indictment I don't know what is.

We all know it could be glorious, but who is willing to do Bony ➡ Aguero this week?

Could be a real gamble of the highest order...a week or two too early though

      Costa Bony Kane...mmmm....

No idea if it's even realistic at this stage but worth keeping warm...
