The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 27 – The Midfield

Having looked at the options in defence yesterday, today we delve into the latest Watchlist rankings for midfielders. Eden Hazard is ousted from the summit due to his impending blank, while weekend goals from Raheem Sterling and Scott Sinclair see their stock rise. Remember, the selections are made with the next four to six Gameweeks in mind.

Despite failing to register attacking returns in his last three appearances, Alexis Sanchez moves to the top of our midfield rankings largely by virtue of Hazard’s blank. The Chilean does have some favourable fixtures (EVE, qpr, WHM, new) coming up, and with all of his six double-figure point hauls coming against sides outside the top seven, he offers that explosive option that few others can.

After scoring seven goals in the last ten Gameweeks, David Silva finds himself moving up the rankings. The 9.5-priced midfielder is currently the most transferred-in player this week, with 50,000+ new owners. While there were some concerns over Silva’s role following the return of Yaya Toure and the effect of new signing Wilfried Bony, Saturday’s 17-point haul has allayed those fears, and with matches against Leicester, Burnley and West Brom in the next four, he looks primed to continue his strong form.

While Eden Hazard remains the highest scoring player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game this season with 160 points, he suffers an inevitable drop this week because of the blank forced by Chelsea’s involvement in the Capital One Cup final on Sunday. Jose Mourinho’s side then face clashes against West Ham and Southampton, two fixtures that are deemed ‘difficult’ and ‘very difficult’ on the Season Ticker. That may well be the case, but few would want to go into those encounters without the Belgian.

Mesut Ozil falls a little this week following his blank at Selhurst Park. The German international showcased his ability as a viable alternative to Sanchez in the three previous Gameweeks, where he picked up 32 points. As previously mentioned, Arsenal’s upcoming schedule is very favourable, and with an ownership of 5.4%, Ozil offers a differential in midfield that is worth consideration for those needing to make up lost ground.

Although Liverpool’s forthcoming fixtures don’t look particularly kind on paper, Raheem Sterling is doing his best to convince managers of his potential. The diminutive midfielder has been a key part of the Reds recent resurgence, scoring three goals and grabbing two assists in his last seven outings. Valued at 8.4, he offers good value for a side gaining in confidence by the week. While Sterling may not spearhead the attack against City, with Daniel Sturridge likely to return to the starting XI, he looks to be the safest route into Liverpool’s attack right now.

Jon Walters is another riser this week, with Stoke playing three of their next four matches (HUL, EVE, CRY) in front of their own fans. Walters has scored six of his seven goals this season at the Britannia, so despite Victor Moses taking penalty duties against Aston Villa, the Republic of Ireland international still holds the edge for now.

With Robin van Persie an injury doubt and both Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao showing little, if any, form, Angel Di Maria remains the only Man United attacking option worthy of consideration right now. The Argentine may not have netted since Gameweek 7 but four assists in as many appearances represent a decent return. With more explosive options such as Silva and Ozil in the same price bracket, allied to a mixed upcoming schedule (SUN, new, TOT, liv), the 9.6-priced midfielder needs to find his scoring boots again soon if he is to attract further investment.

Like Hazard, Christian Eriksen suffers a slight drop given his blank this weekend. The Tottenham midfielder was also left out of the starting XI at home to West Ham, with Mauricio Pochettino initially deciding to rest the Danish international, although he did come on as a half-time substitute with the hosts clearly struggling without him. With the double Gameweek (SWA, qpr) as well as a plum home encounter against Leicester in Gameweek 30 on the agenda, many Fantasy managers will be keeping a keen eye on how many minutes Pochettino affords his star man in Florence and at Wembley as the cup schedules pick up pace.

Sadio Mane was left out of Ronald Koeman’s first XI against Liverpool after turning up late to St. Mary’s, but with the Saints failing to find the net for a third time in four matches, the Senegal international should come back into the reckoning this weekend. With clashes against West Brom, Palace and Burnley in their next four, Mane, who has an ownership of just 1.7% and has four goals and an assist in his last five starts, could prove a handy differential if Southampton can return to their early-season form.

One name that has been off our radars for a long time is Scott Sinclair. After netting two goals in his last two matches in all competitions, though, the former Swansea winger looks to be enjoying a new lease of life at Villa Park since Paul Lambert departed. Valued at just 5.2, Sinclair looks ripe for investment with the second most favourable schedule (new, WBA, sun, SWA) over the next four Gameweeks.

Two of the most popular mid-price midfield picks from the start of the season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Stewart Downing, both suffer a fall. The Swansea man returned from suspension against United at the weekend, but with just two strikes and an assist in his previous 11 appearances, faith in the Icelander is waning. As for Downing, (one goal and a single assist in his last nine) it is a similar story. Tough London derbies against Chelsea and Arsenal on the horizon don’t help his prospects either.

A new name to our Watchlist rankings is Liverpool’s Jordon Ibe. The 19-year-old has been thrust into the limelight by Brendan Rodgers, starting the last three Premier League matches. Although he has yet to register any attacking points, the 4.4-priced midfielder could be seen as an enabler for those wishing to free-up funds for the rest of their 15-man squads. Granted, Lazar Markovic’s Europa League ban does place some question marks over Ibe’s security of domestic pitch time, though the youngster does seem to have leapt ahead in the pecking order for the Reds’ right wing-back berth.

Our final new entry this week is QPR’s Matt Phillips. R’s Head Coach Chris Ramsey recently heaped praise on the former Blackpool wide man, who has provided three assists in his last two outings. While the 4.6-rated midfielder doesn’t have a fixture this week, with the double Gameweek and favourable matches against Palace and Everton around the corner, those looking for an alternative to George Boyd or the suspended Jack Colback should give Phillips some consideration.

    Respected community members,

    Please allow me to put this multiple teams gate to bed. I posted this on FFS the other day as well. Here was my explanation:

    'Yes I did run multiple accounts - there is no harm in admitting it. But two different accounts with the same team, the same captain and the same bench order week in week out. However, I did delete the duplicate team in game week 20 when I thought I had a decent chance of having a crack at winning the FPL with my original side. If you find this to be misleading, have a look here:

    My original account : http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/49/history/
    My duplicate account : http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/358524/history/

    Compare the ranks I have had this season with both accounts for proof that both the teams were the same. Every single rank till game week 20 is the same until the duplicate got deleted. I entered my duplicate team in the Team Oranje league as well which is why I got removed from all leagues as soon as I deleted that account. '

    I'd like to add to this to clear up and answer the remaining questions that the community have asked me on this. I couldn't have possibly deleted my original account - the one on which I play the leagues with my mates. Which begs the question - why did I have two multiple (albeit the same) accounts in the first place? It was because one of my main ML rivals was on FFS - and I didn't want to be spied upon. But he gave up his team midway through the season which allowed me to delete the duplicate account and use my original one on FFS. If I had to deviate, I would have done it some time during the season rather than pulling the plug this abruptly.

    I'd like to add an apology to anyone who thinks that this was cheating or to anyone who comes across this as attention seeking. This is the last you will hear from me on this.

    I hope I have made myself clear.

        I'm more surprised at the complacency here. Everyone has their team and has to suffer what the FPL serve up. Having more than one team gives a big advantage if you can just pick your best one. Play fair or don't bother.

          Yeah I have a problem with people having two differentiated teams. That's when it becomes foul play IMO (I'd except fun themed teams from this, like the Scoutcast team, since they are always too hamstrung by arbitrary constraints to actually do well in the main game).

          Big advantage to achieve what? To win? Surely that isn't why you play the game…

          And what do you mean 'pick your best one'? To show off to your friends, or on here? If people want to do that, then fine. Different strokes and all that. But I honestly don't care about my rank or anyone else's, and so I have no problem if people want to have more than one team. Besides sometimes it's fun to have one that's full of punts, and one where you're trying to get the highest score possible

      No complaints from me. Ive deleted my team before and can confirm team name changes to "deleted". Now i call my team Deleted as a joke.

      Clearly is as you say and in any case, there are many with a "dogs team" etc kicking about and they actually run different sides.

      Ive considered experimental sides before but for personal inrerest only. But never done it. As in, 1 side playing 5-4-1, one 5-2-3, one with 2 tripled up rotating defences etc. But your one isnt even that.

      Screw this touchy-feely, "it's OK bruver we've all been there before" stuff. If you're dumb enough to publicly admit to breaking the rules you deserve to receive some stick. If you've been previously called out on it by others and then double down by publicizing the admission in the most dramatic way possible ("please take over my top 10 team") you've just asked for a larger portion.

      Since when did FFS go all soft?

    Panti
    Bertrand Koscielny Bruce Jones
    Cazorla ADM Puncheon Boyd
    Aguero Giroud
    Subs: Hamer Terry Hazard Kane
    2ft 2,6m.
    Feel like I have to use 1FT this week, how?
    A) Puncheon -> Moses good punt
    B) Hamer -> Krul playing keeper and Aston Villa hasnt scored much, Panti playing ManU!

        😆

        AP was hilarious. I think my favourite FFS moment was when he convinced a load of morons that FPL was opening at 4am and they all stayed up waiting

          That was classic 😆

          That was lunchtime where I live, so all morning you could sense the excitement wax and wane as people veered from being 'na, AP's just taking the piss' to 'I don't want to be the one to go to bed and miss out'.

          Then 4am passed and everyone was saying it must be 4am GMT so they stayed up another hour.

          I've done Panti & Hazard -> Lloris & Eriksen.

          I have 14 anyway this week as I sold all my spurs on my wildcard, So I'm getting two in on FTs this week and I'll get Kane or Chadli next week to fill my quota.

          I lost 0.4 on Hazard this week and will wait until the outcome of the Arsenal v Man U FA Cup game before deciding when to get him or any Chelsea back.

    2 FT's, 0.5 in the bank.

    Ameobi & PVA --> Clark (new) and Boyd (SWA) worth it?

    Only other potential non-player is Walcott, but am tempted to hold and shift for Eriksen next week.

    Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

  17. pundit of punts

    Alright, here's the plan-

    GW 27- Hazard+Wisdom ➡ Silva+Dawson for free
    GW 28- Walcott+PVA ➡ Eriksen+Vertonghen for -4
    GW 29- Save
    GW 30- Eriksen+Vertonghen+Bellerin ➡ Hazard+Naughton+Bruce for -4

    There's an alternate plan that involves keeping Hazard. But I lose Terry for good if I go that way. And I'd want a Chelsea def in my team till the end of the season.

    So, I'd be losing hazard for 2 gws but get the team I want for the next few gws.

    Does that still sound bonkers? 😀

    Come on guys, someone give me a helping hand?

    Need a fifth defender to replace Wisdom and to be able to field a full team this week.

    Current defense is this:
    Krul
    (Terry) Kompany Bellerin Fonte Wisdom

    I do have money in the bank but with that defense I certainly don't need another heavy hitter in there.

    So who should I get?

    A) Haidara (AVL)
    B) Vollscheid (HUL)
    C) Dawson (SOU)
    D) Naughton (bur)
    E) A N other

          Haidara means doubling up on Newcastle... and Bruce is very uncertain to play.

          I thought Haidara looked so shaky last week too that his place could also be under threat if they have any other options.

            They were all shaky, 5-0. I don't think they have a replacement for him with Santon gone and Dummet injured. Doubling up on Newcastle is fine for this week, some can't even field 10 players

    GW 27- Hazard+Wisdom+Terry ➡ Wolf+Naughton+Sanchez for -4
    GW 28- Walcott+Defoe ➡ Eriksen+Austin for -4
    GW 29- Cameron :arrow 4.5 Defender for free
    GW 30- ADM ➡ Hazard for free

        The way I see it I am either going to rise like a champion or sink like the titanic.

        May as well gamble 🙂

      Gasp! You mad man. This crazy plan no doubt stems from your unreasonable love of West Ham and the expectation that the Hammers will inflict a crushing defeat on Chelsea, thus whittling away Haz's points potential for the weeks until he rebuilds his confidence, coupled with Matic's unavailability (for a game).

      Either that or you're just brave. Good luck with that.

    Have 2FT and just luxury transfers available(no injury) and dont wanna lose Hazard, Terry, Kane
    Thinking of 1 transfer and save other, what sounds better?
    A) Puncheon ->Moses or other, one week punt before get Eriksen
    B) Hamer ->Krul for extra 0,3m to have playing keeper to rotate with Panti(usually play Panti but now ManU and Krul has Aston Villa)

    An exciting time for my team, if you think your club is bad, at least their playing atm:

      Good for Hereford.

      It really is sad when clubs wind up. My football team is of embarrassingly large importance to me, can't imagine what would happen if they went under.

        horrible feeling Todd, was a sad day. I believe we will be entered into what will affectively be the 7th division. I look at AFC Wimbledon for hope haha

          Weirdly, I watched them play just yesterday 😀 They were pretty awful though (Akinfenwa missed a penalty), so don't idealise them too much 😉

    what would you choose?

    1.
    GW 27: PVA ---> Alderwiereld
    GW 28 Cazorla -----> Eriksen
    Ings -------> Giroud

    2.
    GW27 PVA ----> Bertrand
    GW28 Cazorla --> Eriksen
    Ings -----> Austin

    In first option I would have 2 Spurs players for DGW
    in second I'd get 2 Spurs and Austin for DGW

    any opinions?

      Why? Just play a 5-3-2, you can even do Walcott to Eriksen ready for the DGW.

        Although that move you mentioned is indeed the plan

        Doesn't help me decide what to do this week though

          It's less than 5k worst than mine so shhhh.

          That is what you do this week, your team would be:

          Pants
          Jones Wollscheid Lescott Koscielny Naughton
          Moses Mane Sanchez
          Aguero Defoe

          All play next GW.

            But I have 2 Frees, might as well use one and I'd rather play Theo than a defender, or sell Theo for a 1 GW punt then move on for Eriksen

              Do Theo to Eriksen this week, then next get Austin and 3rd Tottenham.

      Koeman did say in his last presser that he expected Toby to be good for next week and that was Friday so I'm guessing he's fine unless he's suffered a setback, he'll be fine chill
