Monitor – Alexis Sanchez

With a single goal in his last six league appearances, Alexis Sanchez’s debut season in the Premier League seems in danger of grinding to a halt. After serving up 12 strikes and seven assists in the opening 21 Gameweeks, the Chilean’s displays made him a must-have for Fantasy managers but, in spite of Arsenal’s late surge up the table, his recent output has been minimal.

There’s no disputing the fact that Sanchez’ downturn has coincided with the return to action of Mesut Ozil. The German has started each of the last seven Gameweeks and managed two goals and five assists over that period, whilst Olivier Giroud has developed a source of consistency which has harvested six strikes and a trio of assists in his previous eight outings.

Despite his price of 11.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sanchez is still the third most popular midfielder – only Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling currently sit in more sides. With some of his 30% ownership starting to scour the market for alternatives, we delve into the data to asses his displays over the two time frames in order to ascertain just what has gone wrong.

Guaranteed to play two up top. Kun might be off pens. Against a pulis defence. I just think surely there are better options.

Not on pens is clutching at straws imo. I'm probably captaining Kane but I wouldn't write off Kun the way you are.

I think he'll keep them, but it's not the first one he's missed and yaya is lethal on them so it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

Yeah I don't think spurs will steam roll Leicester, but I do think they'll score and got to think Kane will likely be involved.

I shipped Sanchez and kept Caz. Comes down to personal preference and I'm not criticising that, just saying there's no such thing as cover.

It's a broadly used term in FPL for a reason, you know 'cover' really means giving yourself the best chance of securing attacking returns for a team.

Easier to use the word cover than to type that out every time.

its a broadly used term because people are fools. how about getting Willian as Chelsea cover... exactly

pick players that score the most points, even if they're on the same team.

                  Wouldn't consider Willian cover though.

Referring to my last comment, cover to me means giving yourself the best chance of securing returns from a team. Not just picking a player at random.

Imo Sanchez and Giroud is the best chance of securing returns against N'Castle this GW. I consider that covering my bases as best as possible.

I would say a better term than cover needs to be used though, but it's the common term so we go with it.

Umm not cover is not a broadly used term, it's just a huge misconception in the fpl world. If it applies, it would only be in the defensive positions of the game. In attack it really means nothing.

It's like when people say shall I get rid of Hazard or Di Maria, already have Costa and Fabregas but no other United cover.

Hazard will still score more points regardless if you or I have Cesc in our team as well.

Cover is definitely a broadly used term, you just referred to other people using it.

If you think a better word for securing the best possible chance of returns in a mostly luck-based game should be used, then suggest away. I'm all for it

Mostly luck-based? Fundamentally disagree with you there. You can just see this in FPL players who consistently get Top 10k finishes.

There is a lot of luck involved, as you know. Maybe saying mostly-luck based was wrong of me, actually it definitely was.

The players who consistently have high finishes though, they COVER themselves by selecting the players who give the best chance of returns.

                      Example:

                      No Arsenal player, no cover
Giroud and Sanchez: Cover in terms of picking players who are either in form or have proven to be explosive. Not just picking say, Coq and Welback and considering that 'cover'

Enjoying this conversation by the way - interesting

Yeah but instead of picking let's say Sanchez, who is normally a good pick but in bad form, in order to have Arsenal 'cover', would it not be better to pick someone from another team who is in better form and just not have Arsenal 'cover'?

Cover is effectively pointless, you just pick the players you think will score the most points. If that happens to be triple Arsenal attack then so be it, if it happens to be no Arsenal but Sterling + Coutinho then again so be it.

The main thing is to get points, it doesn't really matter how you get them. 'Covering' Arsenal with Sanchez when Giroud or Ozil are getting the points isn't gonna get you points. Points win prizes and focusing on cover isn't the right way to do it.

so essentially your version of cover is players who will score most points. that isn't what most people mean by cover on here.

Yeah you could be on to something there. There is the smart persons definition of cover, then the fools version of cover.

I would accept that as fairly accurate.

Yeah I just used Arsenal as the example as they have a good attacking fixture this week.

And you're correct on Ozil/Giroud, but the situation varies from player-to-player. I would love to have Ozil instead of Sanchez and Cazorla, but have more pressing needs, so my best cover for this Arsenal fixture is to go with Sanchez and Giroud who are my two best options for Arsenal cover and who are both proven to be able to score points.

In terms of winning prizes, I would be interested to know how many punts the top dogs make. The guy who won last year punted on Coutinho in the final week which ended up winning him the title. Was an interesting read

It's a loaded term, many people use it incorrectly. There is a smart definition of cover and there is the dumb definition that you are accustomed with

Actually it's worse than that I think.

Since the winter wildcard the Arsenal attack has been a minefield. With Giroud, Ozil, Welbeck and Walcott back how was anyone to predict where the goals/assists would go; even predicting who would play when was hazardous.

In a situation like that the idea of cover can't exist. It's more like a lottery and you either pick the right ones or the wrong ones.

My take was that I either wanted Giroud or no-one. Giroud because he is their 1st choice striker and it would be hard for him to miss out completely. He was my only Arsenal player till I took him out for Rooney in GW27. And avoiding Arsenal in that way hasn't harmed me at all.

You don't need to "cover" Arsenal goals and assists. All you need is players who will get goals and assists, doesn't matter who for. "Cover" can have you playing roulette quite unnecessarily.

Exactly. That final bit is my point just above. It doesn't matter where you get the points from as long as you get them.

How do you know who will definitely get Arsenal's goals and assists this weekend though? I would like a turn on your crystal ball please.

Totally correct on the Arsenal minefield, but recent matches say there are points in that midfield and Sanchez is my best possible option to cover that potential.

                        Not really.

I captained Rooney for 26 points in GW27. Not in GW28 (DGW). And again for 12 points in GW29. It probably worked out neutral overall.

And Rooney has now become Costa (c) v Hull which was always my plan.

With hindsight it would have been better to remove Aguero than Giroud but I didn't have the benefit of that certainty 3 weeks ago. 😉

Could be right, but I would have to take a hit to get Ramsey (if I even wanted him that is).

Sanchez is in my situation, the best chance of returns along with Giroud who is a no-brainer this week.

For this week I can't see how anyone would argue with you to be honest. I don't think Sanchez is value but if I had him I wouldn't be shipping him ahead of Newcastle.

And I might well captain Giroud if I had him and didn't have Costa. 😉

No there isn't. The standard FA notice period for a re-scheduled game is 3 weeks other than in the case of FA Cup replays which are 10 days.

We are already inside the 3 week window for GW31. That doesn't make it impossible but like I said, if it's not announced before the weekend that more or less rules it out.

I am sure I am not the only one thinking about Scott Sinclair for this week and the DGW?

His stats aren't too great and his average position (at least on ESPN Gamecast) is pretty drawn back too. Anyone who's seen him play can offer some insight?

I've got Puncheon and I might want to take a hit this week to get Sinclair.

Villa seem to have improved under Sherwood though. At least they have their confidence back. Also, there has been an upturn in their Goal Threat as a team. You do have a point though, did you see him play? One of my friends is saying he could get a few goals until the season ends

Not really, captain whoever you think will score the most points. Best player in the league is a convincing argument, 'due' isn't imo.

Misread, was thinking about transfers in. But don't see how he is better captain material than Kane, Costa or Kun.

He's on better form, (bar Kane) and playing a weakened Newcastle team.

Yeah but Im speculating about why he isnt a popular captains choice. Does he really have that low ownership?

People are suffering from entrapment. Austin owners withou the means to upgrade and the incoming blank. Top 10k is too conservative and 'logic' forces them into a corner making them Giroud-less

Yeah but I was wondering more about those that own him. Of course if you dont have hi you wont captain him 😆 is he really that low ownership?

That's why I got him in a few weeks ago... But Newcastle's situation with suspensions and injuries is making me think there's no way they can score against Arsenal.

    Forster Panti
    Terry Bertrand Bellerin Dawson Hutton

Agree with the players out but not the players in. Ivanovic can't keep up this form and not sure about Mane, would rather have Hendo.

Chelsea and Soton both have great fixtures though, and Ivanovic will still get clean sheets at minimum even if you're right.

Whats peoples thoughts on bringing in Benteke over Giroud? The DGW seems to be influencing me.

    Got 2 FT's -

    Fozter. Guzan.
    Wollscheid. Bertrand. Bellerin. PVA. Dawson
    Eriksen. Silva. Alexis. Hazard. Boyd.
    Kane. Defoe. Aguero.

Was thinking of Giroud and Mane/Chadli for Defoe and Eriksen.

    What do you reckon?

    Morning all! (Australia time)

    Foster > Adrian?

Looking at WestHam's schedule for the reminder of the season, I feel like as if they have the fixtures to be a really interesting differential pick and to potentially turn their form around.

    Sunderland (H)
    Leicester (A)
    Stoke (H)
    Man City (A)
    QPR (A)
    Burnley (H)
    Aston Villa (A)
    Everton (H)
    Newcastle (A)

    Thoughts?

I would have said yes if it wasnt for their poor form at the minute. Beware the team stuck in mid table mediocrity towards the end of the season. Nothing to play for.

Fixtures look good on paper but you have to consider West Ham will have nothing to play for (and the manager's likely to leave) whilst most of those teams will be scrapping for their lives. Could produce decent save points but not convinced there are as many cleanies as it first appears.
