Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 31 – The Weak

After assessing those sides with some favourable fixtures to follow over the upcoming four-to-six Gameweeks, we now turn our attention to those with trickier schedules. Arsenal and United’s bids are set to be put to the test, whilst QPR and Villa’s post-double Gameweek 31 prospects look bleak.

Arsenal

frisking
Arsene Wenger’s outfit are going strong with six league wins on the bounce and appear to be sitting pretty for a Champions League spot. Emirates encounters with fifth-placed Liverpool and leaders Chelsea in their next four are set to put those credentials to the test, however, while a Gameweek 33 blank is also a real deterrent for Fantasy interest over the next few weeks. We already have one eye on the Gunners’ double in the penultimate Gameweek of the season, but many may hold off until the fixture list improves from Gameweek 35 onwards.

The north Londoners’ rearguard have impressed of late, conceding just twice in their last four league outings, though they now face two of the league’s most prolific attacks in Chelsea and Liverpool. Owners of David Ospina will need a rotation option in their ranks to cover the blank and may even look to resign the Colombian to the bench for those two tough home fixtures.

Further forward, Alexis Sanchez’ recent shortcomings have seen over 28,000 FPL managers already part company since last weekend, and the Chilean is unlikely to see a revival in interest until nearer that double Gameweek. The output from both Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil has also slowed of late, though their more reasonable price tags may persuade some from showing them the exit just yet. Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud seems unlikely to be threatened by any such slump: the Frenchman has now registered returns in each of his previous eight starts, averaging an impressive 8.25 points per appearance across those displays. We can expect to see plenty of investment heading his way over the course of the next week even in spite of the gloomy schedule: over 50,000 FPL managers have already welcomed his charms to their virtual dressing rooms since last weekend’s deadline.

Stoke

frisking
Back-to-back defeats against West Brom and Crystal Palace have seen the Potters lose significant momentum after what had been a decent start to 2015. One look at their remaining fixtures indicates that they face a battle to further their current mid-table standing. Mark Hughes’ men travel to Chelsea and West Ham in their next two, before welcoming Southampton to the Britannia, whilst clashes with Spurs and Liverpool also loom to form a testing season run-in.

Stoke have not enjoyed their usual success at the back this season, claiming an unremarkable seven clean sheets to this point. To compound matters, Hughes sprung a few surprises with his defence last weekend, dropping Phil Bardsley in favour of Geoff Cameron and maintaining Marc Wilson in the centre, despite Phillip Wollscheid’s availability; owners of those assets will now be assessing their alternatives.

In attack, Victor Moses will sit out the clash with parent club Chelsea next weekend and will now struggle to come back into serious consideration for our midfields. Meanwhile, Mame Biram Diouf’s two strikes in his last three outings took his tally to eight for the season but he continues to be put in the shade by stronger options in and around the 6.0 FPL price bracket.

Hull

frisking

Failure to pick up vital victories over Sunderland and Leicester in recent weeks has left the Tigers firmly rooted in the relegation mire. Their remaining fixtures suggest that they could be unlikely to claw their way to safety. Steve Bruce’s unit face three away days in their next five (swa, sou, cpl), coupled with tough encounters against Arsenal and Liverpool at the KC Stadium. The final two Gameweeks of the season see them meet Spurs and Man United, leaving just a single solid blue square remaining on the Fantasy Football Scout ticker: a vital Gameweek 36 clash with Burnley.

With neither short-term nor long-term prospects boding well for the Tigers, Fantasy interest looks set to be all but nullified. That said, the 3-2 defeat to table toppers Chelsea did at least highlight the merit of going on the attack and pressing the big teams, and we could well see Bruce emphasising a bid for goals over the next few weeks. With Nikica Jelavic ruled out until the end of April with a knee problem, Abel Hernandez and Dame N’Doye will be relied upon to produce the goods, but with three of the most on-song defences in the league ahead of them (sou, ARS, LIV), the pair will have to prove their fixture-proof credentials to deliver returns.

Be wary Of…

QPR
The impending double Gameweek, which features trips to West Brom and Aston Villa, is set to encourage plenty of Fantasy attention around the Hoops’ chief protagonists. However, a quick glance at the schedule beyond next weekend’s deadline offers little promise. Chelsea make their way to Loftus Road in Gameweek 32, which is proceeded by a blank and trips to Liverpool and Man City in the following four. It seems unwise to be lured into investing too heavily for the double header, with Charlie Austin owners likely to be devising a rapid exit strategy, whilst Matty Phillips’ recent popularity as a fifth midfield option grinds to an abrupt halt post-Gameweek 31.

Aston Villa
Just like QPR, Tim Sherwood’s side boast the luxury of a double Gameweek 31 but appear to offer little potential beyond that. Once the double header has past, the Villians face trips to Spurs and Man City and a blank over the course of three consecutive rounds of fixtures. The Midlanders’ injury-plagued rearguard look set for a busy period, whilst the attacking prospects of Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor look bleak beyond the current deadline. Those willing to punt on the 5.2-rated Scott Sinclair for the double should perhaps have an immediate replacement in mind.

Man United
United have done everything to prove themselves worthy of a top four spot in the last two Gameweeks, with convincing displays against Spurs and Liverpool sending them five points clear of fifth place. Nonetheless, the real hard work is arguably still to come. After their meeting with Villa, Louis van Gaal’s outfit battle Man City and Chelsea in back-to-back fixtures in what could prove to be a decisive week for the Reds.

Much of their success this season has come courtesy of their defensive efforts, and with just a single goal conceded in their last four outings, it’s safe to say that owners of the likes of David De Gea and Chris Smalling will be reluctant to part company; rotation could, however, be a wise strategy when the crunch encounters hit.

Further forward, Juan Mata is leading the way for “transfers in” amongst United’s ranks with over 25,000 FPL managers having snapped up his services after his brace at Anfield. His pitch time is perhaps still in question, however, with Angel Di Maria competing for inclusion. Similarly, Sergio Aguero’s recent tribulations have seen plenty of attention shift the way of Wayne Rooney, but with Robin van Persie closing in on a return, it remains to be seen whether Rooney can retain his role as a central striker.

You should captain whoever you think will score the most points.

It is quite likely that Austin will score the most points of those three options so I can't see how you could think it was mad.

Austin has 15 goals and 18BPs this season. So if he manages 1 goal and 1 assist over his 2 games he's likely to score 12+ points. He has 180 minutes to do that and his opponents aren't the hardest.

Kane or Aguero will probably need to score twice in 90 minutes to have much chance of beating Austin's score in my view. I would captain him over those two if I had him.

Nail on the head here Roberto. I think Austin is the best choice if he's owned but not worth getting in for the week.

A really good article in The Daily Mirror today written by Kenny Dalglish in which he writes about the quality of players over quantity in reply to Greg Dykes proposals for the English gamel...sadly I can only find this more limited version online but it gives a flavour http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/kenny-dalglish-column-quality-coaching-5413046

My son's football match (U14's) has been called off for tomorrow due to lack of players (one team is down to nine starters)...He plays at a decent level in the West Lancs prem league but it looks like after putting the kids through a winter of playing in some shocking conditions that quite a number of very good players have decided that they'd sooner pack up than play in mud and kak...I have to say I agree with Kenny,,we really do live in the dark ages with youth football....

I think we're missing the point here - like him or loathe him, at least Dyke is making an effort - can't be said for previous FA chairmen. We'll see how this this pans out out in the next few years but I do suspect it'll take a lot longer than his plan for world or euro domination in 5-6 years. But, it takes someone to make an effort so fair play to him

        • 11 Years

Oh aye...he is for sure. The problems are much deeper than simply making teams have a set number of players though...as Kenny points out (you'd have to read the full version in the Mirror)...The problems start when most kids in this country are being coached by one of the kids dad and being made to play in conditions that are shocking..to put it mildly...We are years behind countries like Spain and Germany in coaching...and long before the clubs get involved.

Agree for sure - conditions are atrocious and coaching can be even worse. My son is a decent player but the standard of coaching at his local club has made him quit which makes me very unhappy! Football has to be fun and coaching and playing surfaces etc have to be improved imo. BUT if I were in charge of the FA, a complete overhall of coaching would be the first thing I'd do. No shouting at kids under 14, just guidance, and make football a fun thing to do.

Yep...I wrote on here about a game my son played in Longridge about a month ago. It was played in driving snow and on a pitch that could only be described as mud..plus a high wind.

I've never been as cold in my life and I was only watching.

Since that game the keeper for my son's team has packed up for good and two outfield players haven't been seen since either (suspect they have packed up as well)..hence they are down to nine players. I have no idea how much that is replicated across the country but it really is no good for the game at all, shocking in fact...Talented players as well.

Agreed - I wonder, including pro games, how many are called off during a weekend. I bet it's high - anything over 50% is a bloody disgrace. Improved facilities = more motivation to play = more English players playing. Then, make sure scouts are at a premium, which they should be given new FA guidelines = giving a chance to young English talent

There needs to be an article warning of the consequences of bullying on this site. Too many good posters are leaving, and the only response seems to be to belatedly remove posts, and sweep it all under the carpet. Action needs to be taken, and seen to be taken

Until the blank would you rather have

they did, I checked checked the time at 00:40 then again at 02:05 and got very scared i'd wasted an hour and a half before realising the clock change and had only spent 25 minutes making a grav 😛

Good day all, need some advice on my team to hold onto my ML lead.

    Krul / Panti
    Terry / Clyne / PVA / Lescott / Bellerin
    Hazard / Silva / Mane/ Siggy / Boyd
    Kun / Giroud / Hurrykane

    3.7ITB 1FT.

Should i look to bring in Bertrand or Davis to make it 3 saints?

He's in a very precarious position selection wise, especially with Debuchy around the corner. Have a read of Trigger's article a few posts up.

triggerlips or anyone that jogs. do you have any experience dealing with shin splints? any tips?

give a rest for a month and come back with softer footwear

        • 10 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

        * NHS says two weeks

        http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/shin-splints/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Though on return after two weeks if you feel it again stop immediately and give it another two weeks.

Switch to swimming or cycling for a while until things improve. Then perhaps run on softer surfaces such as sand or grass.

thanks fellas. problem is its recurring. I love to run but every time I get into I get the splints within the first week and they just get worse as I increase distance until I have to stop.
I guess I'll try in some top notch shoes. if that doesn't work I'll have to pack it in 🙁
I do other exercise like swimming and martial arts but I enjoy running so would love a solution

Definitely reduce high impact running as much as possible and probably run less often. In fact I'd suggest never running on hard surfaces again if its that bad.
