Scout Scribbles – Coutinho Fires Liverpool into Last Four

Philippe Coutinho’s winner helps Liverpool into the FA Cup semi-finals and will result in a double Gameweek further down the line. Reports suggest Diego Costa could be back for the first match of Chelsea’s double, Cesc Fabregas is expected to feature for Chelsea’s trip to QPR despite undergoing nose surgery, whilst Robin van Persie returns to full training for United.

Reds poised for double after FA Cup win

Brendan Rodgers’ men secured a narrow win over their Championship opponents Blackburn courtesy of a goal from Philippe Coutinho in the 70th minute. The Liverpool manager fielded a strong side at Ewood Park, with Daniel Sturridge spearheading the attack for 85 minutes following a minor setback during the international break. The Reds’ progress through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup means their Gameweek 33 visit to Hull will have to be rescheduled, setting up a potential double in either Gameweek 34 or 37. Hull confirmed last night they expect to announce a new date this morning.

The Scout Says: This means we now have six teams without a fixture in Gameweek 33, with the likes of Arsenal, Sunderland, QPR and Villa also missing out. From a Fantasy perspective, last night’s result at least affords us a chance of a bumper double Gameweek to prepare for, given that the previous two – in Gameweek 28 and 31 – benefitted only two teams on each occasion. With Chelsea and Leicester handed a pair of fixtures in Gameweek 34 and Arsenal and Sunderland playing twice in Gameweek 37, Fantasy managers will perhaps be hoping for the Reds’ double to fall into the latter week – this would see them host Palace and travel to Hull, whereas a Gameweek 34 double would see them travel to West Brom before making their way to the KC. With showdowns against Newcastle, QPR and Stoke also on their schedule before the end of the season, Rodgers’ men will surely find themselves on our radars before long.

Costa targeting return for Gunners duel

After suffering a fresh hamstring injury when introduced in the second half of Chelsea’s clash with Stoke City, Diego Costa has been ruled out of their home tie against Manchester United in Gameweek 33. Reports indicate that the player is optimistic that he will play some part in a trip to Arsenal eight days later.

The Scout Says: Given that Jose Mourinho took a reasoned but ultimately ill-fated risk reinstating Costa so early after he sustained a hamstring knock on international duty, it seems unlikely that – even if passed fit – the former Atletico Madrid marksman will start against the Gunners. With two goals and an assist in Chelsea’s previous two encounters, the 10.9-priced forward was arguably an essential pick for their imminent double Gameweek 34 (ars, lei); yet with doubts over his availability for the first of these match-ups, the dynamic changes entirely. In Costa’s absence, Loic Remy (7.1) looks like the obvious replacement – having netted the winners in his previous two outings, the France international is favoured to be given the nod over Dider Drogba. Beyond that, the stock of Costa’s high-priced stablemates (Daniel Sturridge and Sergio Aguero) has risen in response to his latest setback – indeed, Aguero’s 24% ownership have been afforded the luxury to wait a little longer for the Argentinian to rediscover his form with one less big-hitter demanding attention. Sturridge will surely be set for extra attention once Liverpool’s double Gameweek is confirmed, though.

Fabregas expected to be available for Hoops clash

The Spanish playmaker has undergone surgery on a broken nose in Milan ahead of the weekend derby with QPR. Fabregas sustained the injury after being unintentionally struck by Charlie Adam’s flailing forearm during Chelsea’s clash with Stoke last weekend.

The Scout Says: Despite the surgery, Fabregas is expected to wear a protective mask and be available for the Blues’ visit to Queens Park Rangers this Sunday. In the last two Gameweeks, the former Arsenal midfielder silenced critics that questioned a drop off in attacking returns, recording back-to-back assists in ties against Hull City and the Potters. Fabregas’ form is of heightened interest in light of Costa’s injury – priced at 9.2 and having delivered a goal or an assist in 18 of his 28 appearances for the Blues, he will be on the radar of many Fantasy managers as a third option for Chelsea coverage alongside dead-cert Eden Hazard and one of Branislav Ivanovic (7.6) or Loic Remy. As a potentially beneficial byproduct of missing the R’s encounter, Fabregas would at least be unable to pick up his 10th yellow of the season in the fixture before the limit is increased to 15 – a booking at Loftus Road would rule him out of matches against Manchester United and Arsenal.

Jedinak faces fight for starting berth

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew insists that club captain Mile Jedinak is not guaranteed to earn a start against Sunderland on his return from a four-match suspension:

“He’s been frustrated he hasn’t been involved lately – he played well for Australia in the international break and scored. He will come straight into contention at Sunderland but whether he’ll start, I don’t know.”

The Scout Says: Due to a combination of his involvement with Australia in the Asian Cup and suspension, Jedinak has only started one of the Eagles’ previous 12 matches. Palace have performed particularly well over their last three fixtures in his absence, retaining the same attacking quartet backed by Joe Ledley and James McArthur in the double-pivot. Coming off the back of an historic win over Manchester City last Sunday, Pardew will be loath to tinker with a winning formula and formation (4-2-3-1) that’s served them so well. Nonetheless, Jedinak remains Palace’s joint-top scorer in the league (five) despite a lengthy break from action and, if he fails to displace the likes of Ledley in the XI, offers the former Newcastle head coach a strong option off the bench. With Wilfried Zaha, Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie offering in-form alternatives under Pardew’s guidance, though, it’s fair to say that the Australian’s appeal has all but dissolved.

Van Persie back in training

Robin Van Persie is nearing a return for Manchester United after being reintegrated into Louis van Gaal’s training group.

The Scout Says: Van Persie faces a tough task to fight his way back into United’s first-team plans. The Dutchman started all but two of the opening 26 Gameweeks but in his absence, the Red Devils have won five successive matches and climbed to within a point of second place. Van Gaal’s decision to switch to a 4-3-3 and shift Wayne Rooney up top has seen his captain score four times in recent matches and allowed the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera to flourish in the centre of the park. Given that United have only conceded twice over that run, it seems Van Gaal has found a far better balance without his compatriot on board– strengthening the notion that Van Persie is no longer a guaranteed starter.

Yep I'm thinking Hendo (already have) plus Coutinho and a defender. Sturridge just not on form and plenty of other options for front 2 (Kane is immovable)

Repost (didn't realise there was a new post):
With regard to the Remy being high risk/a trap, it all depends of circumstance.

I have Austin and am ditching. I also don't own Giroud, and am getting GW35/36. That means that, for me, I have a simple choice - a striker for 3/4 weeks. The options, really, are Gomis, Murray and Remy (I have Aguero and Kane). Gomis is, despite a good run, an unknown quantity. I don't trust Swansea at all, I just never back them to score, and Gomis is a loose cannon. He could go on a good ruin, as he has been, but he could also have a barren spell. A patchy striker playing for a team that struggle to score and have nothing to play for? A miss.

Murray is a more tempting option. He's bang in form but, again, we don't know if he can produce this consistently at this level. He has had a good 2 weeks, but in neither has he been towards the top of the stats for threat or creativity. He is not threatening with wave after wave like Aguero does or, indeed, like Chelsea can. A couple of bounces not going his way, a couple of wayward or mishit shots, and his points dry up. Also, personally, I am almost certainly bringing in Puncheon this week. Crystal Palace are a decent attacking team, but are they one I want to double up on with DGWs upcoming?

An issue consistently raised against buying Remy is that, after 3 or so GWs, he is potentially out of the team. Well, if we look at Murray's potential after 3 GWs: Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool. One would hardly expect him to rack up the points.

That leaves us with Remy. Many are concerned about rotation with Drogba. Drogba is not in the greatest physical fitness, he is 37, and has chronic ankle problems. Mourinho has said that he "owes" Remy game time, and that he is too good a striker to sit on the bench. Drogba is unlikely to be around next season, this is surely the perfect time to give Remy games and let him know that he is part of Mourinho's plans.

Remy is, frankly, a better striker now than Drogba. Mourinho tends to play his best XI and, with Costa out, Remy is in there. Even if Drogba does start a game, that means over the next 4 GWs, Remy has 4 games. Same as Gomis, same as Murray. If Drogba does start, Remy will almost certainly get half an hour or so - ample time to do damage against tired legs. Even without the DGW, in a straight contest - Remy v Gomis v Murray - over 3/4 GWs, I would take Remy. Now the top striker in a team determined to seal the title, what's not to like?

I also don't believe, if the title is wrapped up, Mourinho will rush Costa back from a hamstring injury. It would be an entirely senseless risk, and I believe Remy should be first choice until GW35/36, when I will bring in Giroud, if not the end of the season.

Just my 2 cents in response to all of the "high risk" talk. For me, the risk is low, but the gain could be very, very high.

The big unknown is how long Costa is out for.

Don't expect much clarity from Mourinho and on that basis, I am not prepared to risk Remy as one of my front three.

Personal circumstance can create a bias. Austin owners have a convenient out if Costa is injured for a long time. Just seems like people are a little too eager to rule out a comeback after 2 weeks.

I'm not ruling him out at all, I have no medical knowledge, but I don't believe Mourinho has any reason to rush him back if there is any risk at all. As I said above, when Costa is back, I can just switch straight to Giroud.

Fair enough, you've covered yourself if things don't work out and have come up with a solid worst case scenario. So long as you are happy with the idea of having one less Chelsea DGWer if Costa is indeed back in time (even for just 1 game).

The only other option would be Fabregas, and I don't fancy having him in my team for any longer than the DGW, or double up on defence (which would require a bit of team restructuring).

Murray has 5 goals and 2 assists in last 5 and faces significantly worse teams (sun,WBA,HUL) than Remy, who has (qpr,MUN,ars, lei), also Remy is not guaranteed game time where as murray. So I think I'm willing to take a gamble on Murray.

Now this I've been debating all week. I have 2FTs, and can either do a dull reserve keeper transfer (Foster out), or do Eriksen and Austin to Puncheon and Remy. I do think Remy will outscore Austin, but not sure about ditching Eriksen ahead of Villa at home. However, I've been saying that for weeks with Eriksen, and he keeps disappointing, so I'm probably going to be bold and do the double transfer this week.

I have a nagging feeling about Willian. I'm very tempted to bring him in before GW34.

He is playing very well in my view. He was more prolific at Shakhtar than he has been at Chelsea. Mourinho has been telling him he needs to score more goals. These are some of the things I like.

He may not start against Arsenal if Mourinho decides to play Ramires in that position. The likelihood is that either Oscar or Willian will be benched in that game. That's what I don't like.

Looking at current form I think Willian is playing better than Oscar. But Mourinho's decision will be tactical and it's one I can't predict with any certainty. It's therefore a bit risky. But I have a feeling that Willian may be the one to surprise.

Hi Icon, initially I thought play it gw 35 but now it seems 34 seems the way to go, maybe taking a punt on Puncheon/Dann along the way instead.
We need to make a call on Remy/fab/def tho and I'll try fit Skrtel/Hendo/Ster-Studge in Schlupp/McShane may appeal but we have a little time to think-thoughts?

Yeah, assuming it is in 34, I'll be WCing for it and will look to get 3 Che, 3 Liv, and a couple more with a view on 37 too. Until it's confirmed, not going to put much time into it just yet.

Makes Remy a good option this week though if defo WCing pre 34!

Can someone please explain to me all the hype surrounding Jack Wilshere and his possible new contract/move to City?

From what I can see we have a guy who is permanently injured, has scored just 5 goals in his entire Arsenal career, and someone that Wenger would be ludicrous not to cash in on.

Classic case of a player getting better in everyone's eyes when out of the side e.g. Kagawa, or a genuine prospect who's been 'unlucky'?

MAybe a bit harsh, he was a very very good prospect a few years ago, but he's stalled. As Scholes said, I'm not sure he's a better player now than he was at 17/18. I don't think he should get back into the Arsenal team as it stands.

He is a slow starter! 1 goal in first 6 GWs this season, blanked in 3 of them. Not slow by normal standards, but slow by his. I may have Fabregas for the start of the season if Hazard's price is sky high.

Yep, it's written in history. I remember 1 season when I had him from the start and he did nothing for 2,3 GWs, switched him to Bale and then he went riot while Bale went quiet 😆 but tbh I feel much safer with him, plus he's a top, top (c) material. Too risky not to have him unless injured.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Liverpool DGWK plans

Which do you prefer dgwk 34 or 37 for liverpool. The answer depends alot on whether you have a wildcard I suspect.

But for those without a wildcard if Liverpool play twice in Gameweek 34 what are your transfer plans ahead of this? If they play Gameweek 37 which three Liverpool players will you be looking to draft in? Is Henderson a good bet with his cheap price tag? What of Coutinho? And can we trust Sturridge's fitness?

If they play Gameweek 37 will you be looking to maximise

    1. foley_fd
      • 9 Years

      DG34 means I'd look at 3 Liv + 2 Chels, instead of 3 Chels.

      Take a -4 hit.

i have a wildcard but i would feel safer if it was in gw 37 as i have a 52 point lead and that would seal the ml win as there are still 4 gw's left after dgw34

as for liverpool players henderson, coutinho sterling but as my ml rival owns sterling and coutinho i will get them 2 to cover myself

I think even without a wildcard GW34 might suit as it will give rivals less time to plan as they're probably not aware what's going on. I'm not massively interested in Leicester/Hull players so without a wildcard I can do the following:

GW32 - Austin to Remy (giving me 3 Chelsea)
GW33 - save transfer (bench Bellerin, Pantilimon)
GW34 - Bring in 3 Liverpool - looking at Henderson, Skrtel and one other. Get rid of Mane/Eriksen for Henderson and maybe both if I bring in a second LIverpool mid. Bellerin to Skrtel as long term I don't want him. And then either a 3rd mid or Sturridge in for Aguero.

Very nervous having it gwk 37 which would be my draft league game semi final. My closest rival has monopolised a number of Liverpool assets with him being a supporter. He also has Austin who has a fairly decent fixture that week.

I think I'd prefer it to be gwk 34 in the game proper also. Just to catch people unawares and strengthen my hold on my mini league and OR.

If it's GW34, I will get in Remy, Skrtel, Sterling and Henderson over the next few weeks for 3 Chelsea and 3 Liverpool DGWers.

Will not cost me any hits but it does involve me getting a player with a blank out for a player with a blank (Ramsey-> Henderson) next week, which is weird.

Hoping for GW37, will go with Sturridge presuming he's back in the side, and probably 1 or 2 of Henderson/Coutinho/Sterling (I'll also have 3 Arsenal attackers in my side that week). If it's 34, I'll probably have Henderson and maybe Sterling.

Hoping for GW34, will bring in Henderson + Couthino/Sterling/Sturridge + Skrtel/Mignolet. If DGW34, depends on what I can afford though, with 3 Chelsea in the mix. If DGW37, might go with Panti over Mignolet.

Looking to get rid of Ozil this week with the blank looming and I also have Sanchez – any good shouts to replace with? I like sterling with them playing Newcastle at home, but obviously with Liverpool’s blank it seems a bit pointless!
