Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Gomis Setback for Swansea

Bafetimbi Gomis is ruled out for a month for Swansea. City face an anxious wait over Vincent Kompany’s thigh scans, Bryan Oviedo and Peter Odemwingie step up their recoveries, whilst Enner Valencia could be fit in time for West Ham’s trip to City.

Gomis Blow for Swansea

Earlier this morning, Swansea confirmed that Bafetimbi Gomis is set to be missing for “around four weeks” with the hamstring injury sustained in the weekend home draw against Everton.

The Scout Says: Having scored four times in six prior to Saturday’s encounter, Gomis had welcomed the Toffees in his finest form of the season. The Frenchman lasted just 15 minutes before limping off and with Nelson Oliveira also missing out, Garry Monk was forced to turn to Marvin Emnes up top. The 4.9-priced Emnes provided the assist for Jonjo Shelvey’s late spot-kick leveler and, if Oliveira fails to recover, now looks in the driving seat to partner Wayne Routledge in the Swans’ front two as the short-term schedule smiles kindly. Monk’s men now face Leicester, Newcastle and Stoke before a tough looking final three matches (ars, MCI, cpl) sees the season out.

Oviedo targeting Black Cats visit for return

Roberto Martinez is optimistic that Bryan Oviedo can shake of his hamstring injury in time to make a return for Everton’s home tie against Sunderland in Gameweek 36. The Costa Rican defender returns to training this week and will undergo a two-to-three week fitness program before he’s back in contention:

”I expect him [Oviedo] to be training at the end of this week, so we are probably looking at two or three weeks before he is back – maybe the Sunderland game. It was a bad injury. The tendon got a bad tear. It wasn’t a pull in the belly of the muscle, it was a tear right on the tendon, really high up.”

The Scout Says: With Leighton Baines holding a firm grip on the Toffees left-back berth, Oviedo looks unlikely to forge a way back into Everton’s defence any time soon. Martinez has deployed the South American further up the field on occasion, though – notably, on the left flank in a 4-2-3-1 set-up against West Bromwich Albion in Gameweek 22. With four home fixtures (BUR, MUN, SUN, TOT) allied with trips to Villa and West Ham to finish the season, our faith in Everton’ defence is on the up and for those unable or unwilling to fork out on the costly Baines and Seamus Coleman, the 5.2-priced John Stones has started 11 of the last 12 and offers a cheap route into a backline with four shut-outs in the last five in front of their own fans.

Valencia expected to start Sky Blues clash

West Ham United are hopeful that Enner Valencia will be passed fit for their visit to Manchester City on Sunday, after the Ecuadorian sustained a foot injury in last Gameweek’s stalemate with Stoke.

The Scout Says: Diafra Sakho – who also picked up a knock in the Potters clash – has been ruled out of the Sky Blues encounter, so positive news on the fitness of Valencia was imperative for Hammers boss Sam Allardyce. The London club have struggled to make an impact in the final third over the last ten Gameweeks, with only seven goals to their name in that period. Valencia’s recovery from a foot injury last week allowed Big Sam to roll out a front two but, unless he’s prepared to hand Carlton Cole a starting role, the Hammers seem likely to return to a lone striker system once again. Once this week’s trip to City is out of the way, the final five fixtures (qpr, BUR, avl, EVE, new) certainly offer the Hammers hope but with just two wins in their last 15, a lack of form and motivation may persuade many to look elsewhere.

Odemwingie steps up rehabilitation

Peter Odemwingie is set to return to full training today, having been sidelined for six months following the knee ligament damage he sustained in West Brom’s clash with Manchester City last August. In an interview with the club’s official site, Odemwingie revealed that he’s been playing in a few practice games as he steps up his rehabilitation:

”Tomorrow I will start with the group. It has been tough but the medical staff have been brilliant and helped me enormously. Hearing the fans sing my song and looking forward to seeing me playing again is brilliant; that feeling that somebody is waiting for you is fantastic. It’s been just over six months now but these injuries can be nine months, so I’m really happy that I’m back training. I played a few small-sided games last week and yesterday and tomorrow I’ll be back in the fold and hopefully I’ll be ready as soon as possible.”

The Scout Says: In the wake of such a serious injury, the Nigerian international will clearly be nursed back to full health and is unlikely he’ll find himself in the matchday squad before the Potters trip to Swansea City in Gameweek 35. Having tallied seven goals and two assists in 2084 minutes of pitch time last year, Odemwingie had thrived under Mark Hughes last season and, with Victor Moses likely to be sidelined for the remainder of the current campaign, his return hands the Potters a welcome boost. Stoke have four home fixtures in the final six, though with three of the visitors sitting in the top seven (SOU, TOT, LIV), it’s unlikely that many will be looking to the Staffordshire outfit at a time where double Gameweeks are the priority.

City sweating on Kompany scans

Manchester City are fearful that Vincent Kompany could be ruled out for the remainder of the season following the thigh injury he sustained attempting a tackle on Daley Blind during the Manchester derby.

The Scout Says: Initial reports suggest the Belgian defender is set for a four-week spell on the sidelines, which would render him unavailable for the champions next five fixtures (WHU, AVL, tot, QPR, swa) and place question marks over his match fitness for the Gameweek 38 home clash with Southampton. In Kompany’s possible absence, City would be left somewhat short at the back; although Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis are the natural centre-back pairing in his stead, fourth-choice Dedryck Boyata is suffering from a knee complaint which leaves them light on the bench. City have racked up three successive clean sheets at the Etihad and have four home fixtures (WHM, AVL, QPR, SOU) to extend that streak, with Gael Clichy, at 5.4, looking the most budget-friendly option for those willing to bank on Manuel Pellegrini’s backline.

      Replied last post 😉

You're very welcome! As you're a fellow Londoner, I recommend you keep an eye out for screenings of it here:
      http://www.princecharlescinema.com/

They usually have one or two a year, I've been to a couple there, and you get to meet Wiseau (his answers to questions are even more mind blowing than the film). It's similar to Rocky Horror screenings, people bring footballs and throw spoons at the screen (as there are unexplained spoon pictures in frames throughout the film).

I also recommend interviews of the great man, they're extraordinary. This one is great, as you can see Greg Sestero being torn between amusement and anger:

Why are you making me watch this?
The actor doing the interview seems pretty level headed. Why is he in this movie?

His book The Disaster Artist explains all of that, he did acting classes with Wiseau and was completely fascinated with how bizarre he was, then did the film as he wanted to be an actor (and never thought it would actually get made),

I watched on the balcony but had to turn the sound down every 5 minutes because of all the lengthy love making.

Another fact: that's because Wiseau had paid for the songs, so wanted to use all of them, hence 4 minutes of him seemingly making love to his girlfriend's bellybutton.

"You are my rose, you are my rose, you are my roooose". Even the songs are dreadful.

I didn't realise just how much I knew about this film/the background. My mates and I used to watch it all the time at Uni, but I think they've moved on with their lives in the 2 years since...

You know far too much. I can't believe you have watched it more than once. How did you do it?

More than once is an understatement...

I have quite a high cringe threshold from watching a lot of The Office/Curb Your Enthusiasm etc. I think The Room is up there with Spinal Tap as the funniest film I've ever seen, you notice new things every time you see it (like the sofas changing place in different scenes, it being night one second then day the next, characters actually getting names wrong etc.) It's incredible how layered it is in its woefulness.

    K. Davis (Migs)
    JT-Bertie-Baines-Schlupp (PVA)
    Haz-Silva-Bolasie (Raheem, Hendo)
    Murray-Kun-Kane

    What do you think?
I can do Kane>Vardy next week (don't think I want to do it this week, NEW have been utter sh!ite and Kane has only blanked for 2 gws) or get some extra chelsea.
Also, Raheem or Cesc for the DGW?

How does this look for DGW34 onwards? Main worry is losing Kane.

    Schmeichel
    Ivanovic - Skrtel - Schlupp
    Sterling - Hendo - Hazard (c) - Silva
    Aguero - Vardy - Remy

    Subs: Davis, Alderweireld, PVA, Young

Going all out with WC for GW34 with 9 DGW players. Post WC it will be about getting Arsenal players in.

How on earth did this happen though? Baines has been one of the best penalty takers for years. Only missed once? He must be a right wimp. Martinez too. Mirallas is probably back-up.

The Baines miss vs Manu signalled the change, and corresponded with a time when Lukaku was scoring goals aplenty in the EL. It made sense to hand over spot-kick duties to him at that time, and it'll continue that way as he has yet to miss in a few tries (both in the PL and EL)

Not sure but Lukaku took it when Baines was on the pitch. Maybe trying to justify the money spent on him by getting his goal tally up a bit!

Baines. Stats wise still creating alot of chances. And has set pieces too. Possibly pens if Lukaku doesn't start/finish the game.

Will probably do Benteke -> Aguero as my FT and captain Kun. Anything worth a hit? Or a better transfer than the one i am about to do?

    My team will be

    Krul (Pantilimon)
    Rose, Zabaleta, Ivanovic (Janmaat, PvA)
    Boyd, Hazard, Oscar, Eriksen (Coutinho)
    Kane, Aguero(C), Vardy

They seem to have no plan at all. I ve watched some of their games and they seem to try to destroy the opponents game rather than create their own plan. I hope the new manager will change that next year either in PL or Championship.

Is there a Man City presser before this weekend, or any opportunity to find out if Bony is going to be fit for this weekend??

I've literally theory crafted several out strategies for other players but i'm still waiting to hear news! I've kept Bony throughout the AcoN and all this bench time at City and I know as soon as I drop him he'll start playing and someone in my draft league will snap him up!!

Listening to the scoutcast am I missing something with this Vardy bandwagon?

They have Chelsea at home who will be looking to be tight at the back, disciplined not to mention miles better. Burnley too at home tend to keep things tight especially as that game will be the proverbial "6 pointer". I can't see taking a 4 point hit being worth it especially considering the opportunity cost of the player you will be foregoing.

That was different, the are both infinitely better players with significantly better fixtures.

Also this impact this gameweek will be less as everyone will be captaining Hazard, the impact of Austing/tekkers was bigger as people picked Kane/Aguero in the same week.

Good underlying stats for both Vardy and Leicester offensively. Chelsea not that solid defensively either. Not sure if I'd take the 4 pointer but it is effectively a 2 point hit based on just appearance points making up half the hit.

I think this rumour about Chelsea being poor at the back is over played. Taking a 5 game period they have two clean sheets and would have been 3 had it not been for Charlie Adam's one off goal. They are averaging close to their seasons average. I think the Hull game has skewed a lot of peoples perceptions.

        1. Nico.

Would have been back to two if not for Courtois' brilliance vs QPR, too 😉

We have been far from assured at the back. Azpi, Cahill and Terry have been very shaky of late. It says alot that Ivan has been our best defender in recent games. We were absolutely lucky not to concede 2-3 vs QPR. The Hull game was a good indication of what should have happened had we not been playing against Bobby Zamora.

A world class goal keeper making good saves is not an anomaly, Charlie Adam's strike was.

Also Mourinho has done it numerous times where against the big teams he is happy to shut up shop before the game has even started. He will have the target of drawing both the United and Arsenal game as that would effectively wrap up the league.

Also with a big questions up top I would not be surprised to see Chelsea be a bit more focused on set plays.

            1. Nico.

We will be defensive, no doubt. Our best performances come against the big teams as results in seasons past have shown. To achieve results against Manu and Arsenal, our defense will be key.

But conceding 15 shots vs QPR and 19 shots vs Hull is a real concern. Yes, we can rely on Courtois to make the saves just as Manu have relied solely on De Gea for more than half a season, but Chelsea defenders cost 6-8m because we had BOTH a solid defense and one of the best keepers in the world. I would think they're overpriced when we only have our keeper on top form now.

Another thing is now that Fabs and Matic dont face suspensions Chelsea will be more aggressive but the real key here is how Mou approaches the game. I've been to a few of the Arsenal games and no matter how well we are playing he just finds a way to nullify teams when he wants to. Considering two draws wins you the league he will not be taking risks.

I'm doubling down on Chelsea defence and the only concern I have is will anyone of them get rotated after they have won the league.

They're the 2nd most attacking team in terms of number of chances over the last 4 games. They're just going for it. Kane out of form and/or Remy possibly being out means he could be a good punt. Chelsea's defence hasn't been that brilliant recently either tbh.

      1. Guidinho
        • 13 Years

Again read my comments about the misrepresentation of Chelsea's defence. Anyhow people seem to be missing the point that Chelsea are a miles superior team and if they want to go and win there 2-0 it wont be that difficult. Not to mention now that Matic and Fabs won't be ice skating around the pitch it will be a different matter. Complimented by the problems up top Mourinho will be drilling them that clean sheets are vital.

Lei last 4 fixtures were against Hull, WBA, Spurs and West Ham hardly the catenaccio model teams
