Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 33

We roll out our usual Sunday evening look at the weekend’s new injuries, with City’s playmaker issuing positive news after being stretchered off during today’s win over West Ham.

Arsenal
Per Mertesacker is an early injury for the Gunners clash with Chelsea next Sunday after limping off on 63 minutes during the semi-final win over Reading. Arsene Wenger confirmed post-match:

“It’s an ankle injury. He limped badly so it doesn’t look too good really.

Aston Villa
Nathan Baker was replaced early on during the midlanders’ cup win over Liverpool today. After the match, Tim Sherwood confirmed he expects the defender to be ruled out for the rest of the campaign:

“We’ve not too big a squad and we’ve lost Nathan Baker today, Ciaran Clark last week, so we’ve got two fit centre backs. They did really well today, Jores Okore and Ron Vlaar. They’re the only two we’re going with between now an the end of the season, so we’re not blessed in defensive areas. It looks like Nathan’s season is over. It’s a really bad knee injury, and we know how long that normally takes.”

Chelsea
Jose Mourinho rolled out an update on Willian, after the winger was only fit enough to make the bench against United.

”Willian coming on was a bonus I wanted to give him, he’s been in bed for two days and today he came straight from his house, making himself available to give us some help, he was fantastic.”

Everton
James McCarthy is set to be assessed after sustaining an ankle knock in Saturday’s home win over Burnley.

Leicester
David Nugent was withdrawn from the starting XI as a precaution after picking up a calf problem during the warm-up prior to the Foxes win over Swansea.

Man City
David Silva was stretchered off during City’s win over West Ham after being elbowed by Cheick Kouyate. Refusing to blame the Senegal international. Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Silva – who needed several minutes’ treatment before leaving the field – was set for hospital scans:

“At this moment he is in hospital and they are checking if he has a broken bone in his cheek. I always think that a player doesn’t want to damage another player, the ref decided it was unintentional and I also think that.”

An hour later, though, Silva allayed fears of any injury by confirming he was given the all-clear:

“Many thanks to all the messages of support, all the tests have gone well and I’m already home.”

Post-match reports suggest Samir Nasri has sustained a leg problem after replacing Silva with quarter-of-an-hour left on the clock.

Southampton
Toby Alderweireld was stretchered off during the Saints loss at Stoke yesterday afternoon. The Belgian needed oxygen after sustaining a shoulder injury, with Ronald Koeman optimistic on his prospects post-match:

“Toby looks OK now. It’s his shoulder and we maybe have to wait until the scan or something else to know exactly what happened. It’s his shoulder but he’s back on his place and will be good I think.”

Stoke
Mark Hughes has confirmed that he is having to manage Peter Crouch’s pitch time over the run-in as a result of an ongoing groin problem. The big striker has failed to start the last three and was afforded just 15 minutes against Southampton yesterday, with his manager conceding:

“Crouchy is struggling with a groin problem at the moment and the likelihood is that he is going to need an operation once the season ends. At the moment he is probably only fit enough for 25 to 30 minutes at the end of games so we are having to be careful with how we utilise him.”

West Brom
Craig Dawson was replaced on 71 minutes during the Baggies win at Palace after picking up a knee injury, according to match reports.

Schmeichel or Davis until the bitter end.
Fixtures say LEicester but SOT has the most clean sheets until now

Could do with knowing this...wondering whether to get Migs (and lose Myhill (who only cost me 4m)).

Prob not going to keep Migs (going with Skertl instead) so only worth it if he double rises...

yeah, thinking about going with Schmeicel and Davis for my keepers, just wondering whether i'd want to save cash and stick with Myhill instead of Schmeichel

              Agree WBA's fixtures look horrible!

The Brodge was completely outclassed by Sherwood today 🙁
The initial team set up was dreadful. Should never have started SteveG for sentimental reasons. Villa were completely set up to take advantage of the 3 at the back system. Then Rodgers panicked mid-game and changed things which just confused the players and their roles.
    Baffling substitutions followed.

He's a dead man walking in my opinion. Never liked him in the first place. He's a fraud. It's all about media sound bites and a PR oily executive that he pays a fortune to, to tell him what colour tie to wear.

A great run of results has been cruelly exposed by more astute managers figuring out how to stop Coutinho and more importantly how to inflict damage on a 3 CB system.

Rodgers response? Revert to the early season formation and style that saw Liverpool knocked out of the easiest CL group of all time and concede enough sloppy set piece goals that have made CL qualification nearly impossible.

Saying that, all credit to Villa and Sherwood. They were really good and are improving fast under him. Good luck to them in the final. A great club with a great tradition!

Not completely out of the equation, no. LFC fixtures look very strong, apart from Chelsea. But it would mean City or United to lose twice with LFC winning 5 out of 6 ( I think). Highly unlikely.

I think he's gone. I could be wrong but the first LFC manager not to win a trophy in his first 3 years since 1950 says it all.

yep United only need 10 points from 15 to ensure top 4 on goal difference over Liverpool, and that's with Liverpool winning 5 of 6

Hi, After the DGW, should I have Sanchez and Kane or Fabregas (becoming Ozil) and Giroud. The first scenerio would mean that I would get Giroud in later for Aguero before GW37 or that I lose Silva for Ozil and I would need all of my 3 transfers to bring in Arsenal players after GW34.

Too many would include Hull players. If you have 9 DGWs, it depends on who the other 6 are & the following transfers. Decent fixtures for the 9 in GW35 helps.

9/15 of your players will belong to only 3 teams though. Not enough spread there for future games to minimize the risk. I think 7/15 is a decent amount...especially if your structure your team in a manner that lets you get future DGW players such as Giroud and Koscielny.

It could work nicely but I don't trust Leicester too much and Liverpool's form is a bit of a worry to invest into 3 players from each team. And with Chelsea you never know if Mourinho will rest the likes of Terry/Ivanovic if they win the title early. Those 3 transfers might get used up quickly.

Plan would be to sell the extra 2 Chelsea players. Only Hazard is essential.

      ignore Hull entirely
ignore Leicester besides Schmeichel and maybe one attacker
      ignore Chelsea attack besides Hazard
ignore Sturridge and pick one Liv mid

Chelsea will keep them out and Burnley aren't the pushovers that everyone claims them to be every week

Chelsea will also see out the season tidily, Mourinho doesn't need goals..1-0 wins to pad their record will do

I'm of two minds still on two Liverpool mids..might do Coutinho + Sterling..definitely ignoring Hendo if Gerrard is playing and Sturridge is a waste of 11m and a striker spot

Top DGW picks for me are: Sterling, Ivanovic, Skrtel, Hazard, Fabregas, Terry, Henderson, Moreno and Schlupp because value for money they are players you'd be interested in keeping past the DGW.

I think it's fine as long as you have a clear path to get three Arsenal attackers by gw 37. Leicester players like Cambiasso and Schlupp / Morgan are good value and can easily be benched later on.

Supposing Leicester keep a cleanie v Burnley and lose to Chelsea unless you are on a WC it is probably worthwhile sticking with a solid SGW defender with a good fixture.

Leicester need to win regardless so their defenders aren't a bad option given the fixtures coming up. Don't see Chelsea scoring more than 2 vs Leicester & they possess decent attacking threat now.

I have one I just think a FT/ hit would be better spent elsewhere in general.

If Chelsea score 2 goals against Leicester the defender gets one point and you may as well have played a single GW player with a good fixture (if you have one).

For non wildcarders the trick is going to have to be rather than maxing out your team for hits it will be getting the right players and still getting good results from your SGW players who will become differentials against the WC teams. If only there were some players with clearly more potential like in the last DGW. It just feels like a raffle at the moment for point scorers.
