Scouting the Doubles – Gameweek 34 – Hull City

In light of Leicester’s miraculous revival and a run of six matches without a win, Hull City now only sit outside the relegation berths on goal difference alone. With Arsenal, Spurs and United in the final four Gameweeks, the Tigers will be desperate to capitalise on their match in hand when they travel to Crystal Palace and host Liverpool in Gameweek 34.

The Prospects

In a Gameweek that also includes two fixtures for Chelsea, Liverpool and the buoyant Foxes, it’s difficult to make a case for Steve Bruce’s out-of-form side. Allied to the fact they’ve netted just four goals in their last six outings, the Yorkshire club face three of the league’s top six sides after the double – necessitating an exit route for any potential acquisitions. With free transfers at a premium leading up to a double Gameweek 37 for Arsenal and Sunderland, few Fantasy managers will want to shoulder that burden.

Hull’s first head-to-head of Gameweek 34 sees them pay visit to a Crystal Palace team that succumbed to a shock 2-0 defeat at Selhurst Park last Saturday. The Eagles were grounded following a four-match winning streak in which they netted 11 goals and recorded an historic victory over Manchester City. With six goals in seven appearances, Palace frontman Glenn Murray is the form forward leading up this encounter. Meanwhile, among the league’s midfield roster, only Alexis Sanchez (12) and David Silva (15) have attempted more shots inside the box than hat-trick hero Yannick Bolasie (11) in the last six Gameweeks. On the flip side, City’s goalscorers will draw encouragement from the fact that Palace have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine league matches.

The Tigers welcome the Reds to the KC Stadium in the second of their double match-ups, knowing only Chelsea have bested them in their last four home ties. Liverpool have registered clean sheets in four of their last seven fixtures but revealed a defensive vulnerability in their 4-1 defeat to Arsenal that Bruce will be keen to exploit. Hull could also be boosted by the absence of Daniel Sturridge, given that the English frontman was ruled out of Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final and will be short of fitness even if he features in their trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Hull have notched just two shut-outs in the previous 12 Gameweeks, rendering their rearguard a near write-off from a Fantasy perspective. The promise of bonus save points would have made goalkeeper Allan McGregor (4.8) a budget option for the double, yet he no longer boasts security of starts after being dropped for Steve Harper last weekend.

The Likely Lads

Dame N’Doye (5.5) piqued the interest of Fantasy managers upon his switch to Hull in the January transfer window, netting in his first three starts. Despite failing to score in his subsequent appearances, only three forwards have attempted more shots than the Senegalese striker (14) in their last four matches  although only four were from inside the box.

Ahmed Elmohamady leads the Tigers’ scoring charts this season with 92 points, highlighting the dearth of attacking flair in their squad. The 4.9-priced midfielder scored against Chelsea in Gameweek 30 and has mustered more shots inside the box (three) than any other Hull midfielder in the previous four matches, whilst his ten key passes over that period has been bettered by only four other midfield options in the top-flight.

The Cheeky Punt

Given their form, it’s arguable that any Hull option is no more than a punt but, as we’ve seen in recent double Gameweeks, it’s folly to write off struggling sides.

With Gaston Ramirez struggling due to a hamstring problem, Jake Livermore‘s (5.1) could be worth considering. The former Spurs man has fired eight attempts on goal in the last four matches, more than any midfield team-mate.

If Bruce’s glowing praise regarding Mohamed Diame’s return to the side is anything to go by, the English head coach will be desperate to reinstate the Senegalese midfielder back into the starting line-up following two brief run-outs in recent weeks. Despite only clocking 934 minutes of pitch time this campaign, Diame is Hull’s second-top scorer, having notched four goals in his first six starts for the club.

For those managers operating on a shoe-string budget in the upcoming double, Irish defender Paul McShane could prove a decent enabler. With uncertainty over the Hull keeper situation, the former Sunderland man – who netted in Hull’s recent trip to Swansea City- sets you back just 3.9. The Tigers defensive record suggests this may be a punt too far for most, though.

Abel Hernandez (6.6) represents a risky outside bet. The Uruguayan striker was dropped for Hull’s visit to Southampton but came up trumps in the Chelsea clash two weeks before, scoring for the first time since Gameweek 8. Bruce needs goals, though, and with Nikica Jelavic still injured, Hernandez could return to the XI alongside N’Doye.

Once Chelsea inevitably win the Premiership, is there going to be rotations enmasse?
What is the minimum game qualifications for players to get acknowledged and who needs more game time to qualify?

I read a post on here about this very thing just the other day. A Chelsea fan ( I think it was Ruth NZ ) said that the last time Mourinho was at the club and they won the league he rotated massively in the final two games after they clinched the title, giving nearly everyone some pitch time.
I don't think the minimum game thing applies any more. I have a feeling that the rule changed a few years ago, although I could be wrong.

Thanks. I remember this being discussed a few years back and at that stage there was a minimum.

Yes, I remember Wenger moaning that he had to play Martin Keown so he could get a winners medal in his last season at the club.

Only when they have mathematically won will they rotate. I think that might be the case if they beat Arsenal

Why post unresearched guesswork on here?

The minimum is 5 appearances. Cuadrado needs 1 more. Apart from youth, everyone else in the Chelsea squad is already qualified.

@ Perthite - I posted my assessment re. possible Chelsea rotation the other day if you want it.

        And going by this:

most players (20) have already qualified for the 5 games except for Salah (1 EPL game - on loan to Fiorentina) and Loftus-Cheek (3). The rest haven't had any EPL minutes.

    Shud i go take a -4 or -8
    -4 Sterling coutinho/henderson
    -8 Ndoye and Sterling coutinho/henderson

Is this the perfect week to take some hits and try and gain back around 30 pts ?

I am desperate to close the gap seems like the final chance with arsenal dgw and this one . the reason is he and i have very similar teams and none of us have a WC .

A couple of good captaincy punts can do the damage. Taking hits can be like gambling sometimes and you end up slipping further. Just do sensible moves and don't over do it. A hit can easily negate the benefit of a DGW and leave you with an extra player to get rid of post DGW

    Morning!

Pondering which two to play out of these options.
    A) Sanchez (CHE) 6,2 ppg
    B) Giroud (CHE) 5,2 ppg
    C) Cambiasso (bur, CHE) 3,3 ppg x2 = 6,6 pp2g
    D) McShane (cry, LIV) 2,6 ppg x2 = 5,2 pp2g

I also have double CHE defense playing if it makes a difference.

    Which two would you pick?

I think a bit more mathematics required.
Take form and fixtures into consideration.
Somebody like Hazard is bulletproof, but others need a bit more study.
      Just a thought!

Clearly other factors are also important other than ppg. Having 2 Chelsea defs makes me want to bench Sanchez and Giroud. But then that might easily backfire.

I am not questioning your logic but I would check their points averages on home/away and how they do against the top 6 before making a definitive decision.

    2. Eze Really?

Have you bought in Cambiasso and Mcshane recently? If so then I imagine it was for a DGW and their price as subs to the end of the season?

      1. Cocky Spaniel Alves
        • 12 Years

On a wildcard now and if I end up keeping McShane and Cambiasso then I'll be able to field 10 DGW. McShane is definitely a sub, Cambiasso also the 5th mid.

        1. Eze Really?

That is what I thought, but I am sure you had a view of getting the double benefit of playing them in a DGW and using them as subs after. Arsenal are playing Chelsea which will probably be low scoring. Sanchez is bullet proof though.

11 clean sheets for Liverpool over the course of the season with about 5 in a row against mid table teams a few months ago, with everyone agonising over which mf to pick, might it be better to concentrate on their defence?

After losing to Villa they will surely be in a slump and it's not impossible for them to grind out a couple of 1 nil next week to get back on track.

    Thoughts?

Yeah that's what I'll be doing. Mainly because I chose to not double up at the back on Chelsea and went with Fabregas instead. so I no longer have a free spot in midfield and I want to keep Silva.

Same situation Ryan, got Fabregas, Hazard and Ivanovic so don't have many options, their midfield is a minefield and this week I currently have Puncheon and Silva with good fixtures so I'm not sure it's wise to lose them on a gamble that I pick the right Liverpool man.

Upfront I want to play Austin and Aguero so this just leaves me the defence.

Hull and West Brom are not the most prolific of teams so can go with just Skrtel but that would only leave me with 5 DGW players, the guy chasing me is on a WC so I'm not sure on the risk of a -4 to double up on Moreno and Skrtel, would you do it? My lead is only 26 so if I'm too conservative or too brave it could go horribly wrong.

I'd be happy to back Skrtel but not sure about both, both are good for 34 and 35 though, would be a lot easier if Toby was passed fit as I could bring in Henderson and Skrtel but right now I'm carrying Dawson, Haidara and Toby so can't neglect the next few weeks aswel.

Anothet question then, would you run with 5 doublers and a 26 point lead against someone on a wc? Is the point hit worth it or would you hope the lead can hold them off?

This is my real dilemma going into the week really, happy to take a hit as if hey play twice it pays for itself but the season doesn't end this week so there's still a lot to play for.

Yeah, I'm just trying to limit the damage, I expect him to load up with a minimum of 9 so just debating if a hit will improve my chance of staying close this week or taking no hit and hoping he don't outscore me by 26.

                    Unsure which way to go.

If it puts your mind at ease I don't think it will hurt to take the hit. I'm not convinced it will make a difference as your alternative player could do just as well with those 4pts added. So it's a question of what you want your team to look like from GW35

                        Aguero and Silva V Villa
                        Austin V West Ham
                        Clyne V Spurs
                        Puncheon V Hull
                        Myhill V Liverpool

Other than Myhill I don't think it's unrealistic to hope for big scores from those players, the flip side is that you bring double players in for doubles sake and mess up a perfectly good team, I guess I need to hope for a lucky week where Puncheon and Austin turn up.

I'm not 100% convinced by this DGW either, Liverpool will surely be in a slump after the weekend and could grind results out without scoring loads, Chelsea are clearly in grind out mode and are not free scoring, it's only Leicester that look in good fantasy form but they play Chelsea in one of those games, I don't think this week is as clear cut as you would think with it being a double, I guess I got to keep my fingers crossed that the games are quite cagey with not many goals in.

The Arsenal DGW has more potential but by then my 26 lead could be a 26 chase if the GW blows up.

I think you have no choice but to hope the DGW is a flop. You wouldn't necessarily be on the wrong side of the fence there either.

Random question.. is it worth taking a hit to do boyd to cambiassoo?
and then playing cambiasso at the expense of kane?... Would have kun and Austin up f ront.

    K.Davis
    Terry* - Fonte - Skrtel*
    Hendo* - Silva(?) - Hazard*(C) - Fabregas*
    Aguero - Kane - Giroud

I'm deeply troubled by people who consider owning a defender to be a factor in deciding whether they pick an attacker who is playing said defender. The assumption that you owning a player in FPL will contribute to their performance is indicative of stupidity - or a level of vanity that flirts with outright delusions of grandeur.

Frankly, people who are considering benching/selling Sanchez because they have double Chelsea defence should not be on Fantasy Football Scout. They should go to NHS direct.

    1. Sunny 😎
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 2 months ago

They are probably benching Sanchez because they think their double Chelsea defence will keep a clean sheet maybe.

But benching a player because he is playing against another one of your players is stupid

There is some merit to the idea, but I stress, only some. At the end of the day selling a player because of 1GW is stupid. They'll only want to buy back Sanchez a week later. Also when it comes to the top FPL assets they are always capable of a haul, you wouldn't want to bench them for some of those

          1 Leicester,

Because we'll need those cheap players post DGW34 to accommodate the likes of Sanchez, Giroud and Ozil / Ramsey, and since taking in a cheap player will require a hit anyway, its better to do it now with a DGWer for what is effectively a -2.

I'd switch Alderweireld for Vlaar and Davis for Ospina. Puts you in a better position and the defence rotation works just as well without Southampton (who are a fading force anyway).

        Thanks for the feedback, mate.

How about Alderwereid to O'Shea and double Sunderland defence?

Also possible but do you really want that? I wouldn't. Vlaar has useful games in 35, 36, 38.

Looks good, similar to mine. Migs/Myhill a good (and cheap) rotation. Probably dont need 2 SOT now. Agree Ospina could be good but I will want 3 arsenal attackers....

Hi Guys, Would be grateful for your thoughts on my initial WC team. Im circa 15k, and 34 pts ahead in ML (rival also on WC):

    Mignolet*
    Terry* Schlupp* Wollsheid
    Hazard (c)*, Fabregas*, Henderson*, Sterling*
    Vardy*, Aguero, Kane

    SUBS – 1) A. Sanchez, 2) PVA (DGW 37), 3) Panti (DGW 37) OR Myhill, 4) Monreal / Toby / Def for 4.9 or less £0 ITB

Looking for a good week and to set up nicely.

Other options (Coutinho over Sterling)? If Remy is fit Fabs/Vardy could become Remy/Cambiasso

    Cheers in advance

To sum up the answer my question at the top of the page, it looks like a player needs to play minutes in 5 games to qualify for a Premiership medal and it looks like everyone who can get one at Chelsea has qualified already.

It'd be nice to see Mourinho give a run out to some of the academy youngsters. What about that Loftus Cheek guy. Does he have 5 apps as well?

He's played 1 game so far. All rest who haven't qualified already haven't played any minutes.

    A. Remy/Cambiasso
    OR
    B. Fabs/Vardy

    and

    C. Migs/Schlupp
    OR
    D. Schmiechel/Moreno

Looking B and C at the moment (as Migs rotates well with Myhill to season end)

    Morning guys,
Asked the late night crowd last night but only got a couple of responses, strange lot those evening chaps 😉 want to check with the usual morning guys..

    A) McCarthy, Naughton, Erikson > Mig, Moreno, Sterling
    B) McCarthy, Naughton, Erikson > Mig, Moreno, Hendo:
    C) McCarthy, Silva, Erikson > Mig, Hendo, Sterling: but leaves me enough ITB to do Remy > Giroud for free in 35? And in 1FT in 36 get Ozil in for free? And, Bellerin > Kosc in 37 for free.

I'm currently on C, is it a big risk going without Silva though?

    Plan is
    Silva > Pool (dgw)
    Pool > Arsenal (dgw)

    I own Aguero.

I would prefer A unless Silva is confirmed out for more than a week
