Scouting the Doubles – Gameweek 34 – Chelsea

Unbeaten since their New Year’s Day mauling at Spurs, Chelsea face one last big test of their title credentials when then travel to Arsenal in the first clash of their double Gameweek 34. Crucially, Jose Mourinho’s men know that wins against the Gunners and Leicester in the next week would bring the title to Stamford Bridge, though the Blues don’y have it easy, with both their upcoming opponents having form on their side.

The Prospects

Since falling to that 5-3 defeat at White Hart Lane, Chelsea have strung together a 12-match unbeaten run, winning nine games and drawing three in the process. Their success has been predicated on a solid defence, with no side conceding fewer goals (seven) than the London club over that period. A largely favourable schedule beyond the double (CRY, LIV, wba, SUN), which includes three home ties, ensures that any prospective investors won’t need to plan an exit route for their new Chelsea recruits.

The Blues head-to-head with Arsene Wenger’s men is shaping up to be a pivotal encounter. Like Jose Mourinho’s side, Arsenal haven’t tasted defeat since they were bested at White Hart Lane, recording victories in all eight of their subsequent league clashes. This exceptional run of form has in part been inspired by Olivier Giroud’s most productive spell at the Gunners, with the French marksman tallying seven goals in as many starts. With Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey also in fine form, Chelsea’s rearguard will be keeping tabs on a bevy of threats.

Mourinho’s men then close out their double with a visit to the King Power Stadium, as Nigel Pearson’s troops strive to climb clear of the relegation zone. The Foxes have discovered their scoring touch in the last four Gameweeks, netting more goals (10) than any other side in that period. Furthermore, Leicester have registered clean sheets in two of their previous three home clashes – demonstrating their resolve to beat the drop. That being said, they’ve still shipped seven goals in their last four match-ups, which plays into the hands of the free-scoring Eden Hazard.

The Likely Lads

Only Harry Kane (50%) can lay claim to a higher ownership than Eden Hazard (44%), who’s delivered attacking returns in all but four of his last 17 starts for Chelsea and now sits 31 points clear of his nearest challenger in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. The Belgian winger has tallied more goals (four) than any other midfielder in the last six Gameweeks, with only David Silva and Alexis Sanchez (both nine) managing more attempts on target than the 11.3-priced midfielder over that stretch. To further bolster Hazard’s case for inclusion, he’s also notched three assists in seven and scored in both the reverse fixtures – it’s little wonder, then, that he’s the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll.

Cesc Fabregas has contributed to 20 league goals (three goals, 17 assists) in his debut Blues campaign – as compared to Hazard’s 22 (13 goals, nine assists) and Diego Costa’s 22 (19 goals, three assists). After a drop off in form, the Spaniard has rediscovered some consistency and served up a goal and two assists in his last four starts – at 9.4, he offers a midfield double-up option alongside Hazard, with doubts now hovering over all three of the Blues forwards as we head towards the double.

Branislav Ivanovic (7.7) tops the Fantasy Premier League defender rankings with an impressive 160 points – due in no small part to the four goals and five assists he’s tallied this term. Despite not producing any attacking returns in his last four outings, the Serbian right-back has offered the biggest goal threat of any Chelsea defender in the last six Gameweeks, attempting four shots at goal.

John Terry (6.9) offers a cheaper alternative to Ivanovic or double-up defensive option, bearing in mind that the Blues have now chalked up back-to-back clean sheets. Although he possesses an inferior points per game average (4.5) to Ivanovic (5.0), Terry has executed more shots from inside the penalty box (three) than his team-mate (two) in their previous six matches.

The Cheeky Punts

With a points per game average (3.8) well below the other regulars in Chelsea’s back line, Thibaut Courtois doesn’t instantly stand out as an alluring acquisition. Nonetheless, Arsenal haven’t failed to score in any of their encounters at the Emirates this season, which suggests a clean sheet is an unlikely outcome for the visitors. In such an event, the Belgian shot-stopper’ save points could be invaluable – Courtois has earned six save points in the Blues’ last seven. The one concern is that if Chelsea win the title early, Petr Cech could be handed matches over the final four Gameweeks, thus lessening Coutois’ appeal.

Having started each of the last six Gameweeks, Gary Cahill has seen off the challenge of Kurt Zouma and established himself alongside Terry once again. At 6.3, he’s a little more budget-friendly than his skipper and, like Courteous, his first-team place looks secure until the Blues clinch the title at least. Cesar Azpilicueta has earned more bonus bonus (four) in the last two matches than any Chelsea defender but Filipe Luis remains a threat to his pitch time at left-back.

After starting 14 of Chelsea’s first 16 fixtures this campaign, Oscar has played a bit-part role of late, clocking an average of 44 minutes in his last four appearances. In spite of that, a deft assist for Hazard’s goal on the weekend could afford the Brazil international increased minutes in the double, as attempts to build upon impressive haul of six goals and eight assists this season. Mourinho could easily field Ramires on the right against Arsenal in an attempt to stifle Sanchez, though, placing question marks over Oscar’s prospects.

At this point in time, the injury situation up front makes it impossible to recommend any Chelsea striker. Third-choice Didier Drogba has started the last two but the severity of his ankle injury is yet unknown, whilst we really need to wait until Friday lunchtime before Mourinho gives us any sort of inclination as to whether Diego Costa or Loic Remy will be able to play any part in either of the upcoming matches.

Should I get Skrtel for the DGW?

Already have Sterling and Hendo for -4; Skrtel would be for -8.

    I think there's a good chance BUR-lei will end 0-0.

Yes, both are fighting relegation, so it's tempting to think this could be a high-scoring game between two desperate sides duking it out - but the way Burnley are choosing to scrap for survival seems to be through frustrating the opposition.

Burnley haven't been involved in a match with over 2.5 goals - to use a little betting terminology - for 9 league games now. And since Michael Duff was reinstalled in their backline, they've kept 2 cleansheets in 5 (he may be the key to their defensive solidity; he's been involved in 6 out of their 7 shut-outs this season, despite his lengthy 16-game absence).

It's true that Leicester have been impressive going forward lately, but will they be more cagey on the road against their relegation battle rivals? This is a '6-pointer', as they say. And Burnley haven't scored once in their last 4 games. I can only see this one being a low-scoring affair.

I'll be surprised if it's 0-0. Burnley will see this as a must win so will be more adventurous than in their previous fixtures where they've been up against mainly top 8 teams.

Could be. We know Ings can score when he wants to, just haven't seen it for a while. I don't think Barnes's suspension helps either.

I think Barnes's suspension will help, he was playing out of position on the wing, now they are likely to bring in a more orthodox winger.
When Burnley had their last goal drought at the start of the season it was broken at Leicester and Michael Kightly was the scorer.

On a WC, worth getting Vardy in and then transfer to Giroud next week or just get Giroud in this week?
If I get Vardy it will mean my next three transfers will be bringing in Arsenal players for GW37, if not I'll have one spare to either get Defoe for his DGW or fix up any injuries etc.

It is interesting, i wouldn't have though 2 points against Chelsea would be the expected returns, so not really worth the -4 hit.

Personally I hope Leicester concede and get dusted by Chelsea and Burnley, their defence doesn't warrant investment IMHO.

Exactly. I know Leicester's fixtures are good for the run-in but would you really want a guy who's scored 3 goals all year in front of a Kane, Giroud, Austin, etc?

Aye, I'll probably bottle it knowing me 😛

But Hazard rarely returns more than 1 goal in a game, of course with added BPs that helps but I think the likes of Murray or Kun really could do better. Hmmm, might ponder it for a while.

Smalling will be a great pick...and Ramsey. Jrod may be a good pick coming in cheaper than he should be..Grealish at Villa will be cheap and Sherwood may show a lot of faith in him. Spurs could have a big clear out and one or two young picks replace them...ala Kane this year.

          Hull/Middlesboro defender rotation
          Tomlin (5th mid if 4.5)
          Costa
          Lennon if transferred to Everton
Stones if 5.0 (Everton assets should be cheaper in general)

            Dull question I know however..

Ospina (CHE) and Myhill (LIV) currently with a likelihood of 2-3 points each

Is it worth getting Kasper in for Myhill for a hit (-4)? That would mean Kasper would need at least a clean sheet to just cover the hit...

Reason for it is that I feel I need Leicester cover (can't believe I'm saying that) as rivals in ML's will have at least 1 LEI def

            Thoughts?

Myhill -> Schmeichel could be worth the hit because it sets you up well beyond the DGW too. The pair rotate well and Brom's fixtures are pretty grim.

Green made 5 pts in his DGW despite conceding 4 goals. If you don't think Myhill or Ospina will keep a CS there's probably only a -2 downside and a +6 upside.

Personally I think I would probably do it because Burnley don't look like scoring really.

Same applies really unless you think Saints will keep a clean sheet against Spurs.

The thing is that Davis has an awful GW38 fixture as well while Schmeichel has QPR (home). So you get 3 games from Schmeichel, a DGW including Burnley and the QPR game instead of Davis away at City.

Taking all that into account I think it's well justified.

Myhill plays for WBA. Pulis is the manager. Don't suddenly assume they won't keep any more clean sheets this season.

Yeah, that's true - I still think they'll keep some cleansheets but it's getting trickier to know when they'll get them.

Think you could be right but it's still a brave move to play them against Pool. I prefer more readily predictable scenarios in FPL really.

All I would want Myhill to play would be this week (maybe) as wouldn't play him over Ospina for ROS

Fair point regarding this week all the same, just don't see Liverpool attack blanking (probably cause I owe half of them haha)

            (Panti, Kane, Boyd, alder)

This is for -4 already, have I got my subs right? Feels wrong benching Kane but feel only one I could otherwise bench is Clyne? Any help

            Murray Kane Aguero

Exactly, because he is the cheapest keeper. No point spending 0.5 more for them to be on the bench the whole time. I need that extra cash for Benteke/Mata and Arsenal trades leading in to GW37

Who should I bench this week:

            A) Kane (sou)
            B) Giroud (CHE)
            C) Cambiasso (bur/CHE)
            D) Silva (AVL)

I'm leaning Kane, but could be swayed.

Really don't understand some of these RMWCT posts.

Hull are going to get murdered by CPL and Liverpool...get rid of their players.
Leicester strikers are going to have a hard time scoring against either Burnley or Chelsea..maybe one CS for their defenders..possibly
Chelsea are going to park the bus against Arsenal...and we've all seen their attacking stata of late for the Leicester game.

The players with the highest ceiling are the Liverpool mids...WBA away (who rode their luck against Palace and are actually crap in defence right now) and Hull away (who are just crap full stop). Liverpool are capable of sticking six or seven goals in over the two matches and the three pool mids walking off with a 10+ points each...no problem.

The reason for the RMWCT posts is because some people have WC's and want to use them before this season comes to an end. The biggest DGW (this GW) is the best possible option for them as firstly, there is a pretty high ceiling of points on show (Chelsea, Liverpool, and Leicester could clean up) and secondly, there is a good chance they will capitalise on people who are too silly to follow them. People like you who are jealous of those who don't have a WC and have chosen to ignore it. Good luck this week though!

I like Pool's prospects. I brought in two mids but I've since been thinking maybe I should've gone for their defenders...truth is, I prefer the defensive options from all of Che, Liv & Lei, Hazard & Sterling aside. I'm just not sure how many goals there are gonna be in this DGW.

As for Brom, it's a tricky one to call. They were undone by two sides fighting relegation but then they shut out Palace. Maybe they were lucky, maybe it was the Pulis effect against his old club - but I prefer to believe that they still have it in them to frustrate any side, just maybe not when they're up against a team that wants it more.

I quite like Pool's defensive prospects tbh. Think one or two cleanies are feasible.

As attacking goes, I posted this earlier:

Henderson: PPG with Stevie G= 3.68
              Henderson: PPG without = 7

Coutinho: PPG with Stevie G= 2.9
              Coutinho: PPG without = 5.88

I have not looked at the numbers for Sterling, essentially my theory is Stevie in the team really reduces the appeal for most of their attacking assets.

As for Lei and Hull, yeah won't be touching them. Chelsea, I'm happy with just Haz and Ivan.
